Book Description
When is the right time to shear a sheep? Is there a market for manure? What time of day is best to collect eggs? What is the correct way to milk a goat? What does a duck eat? Can a cow and a sheep share the same pasture? Which types of rabbits are easiest to raise?
The perfect book for anyone who has ever dreamed of having that little place in the country, Barnyard in Your Backyard offers tried-and-true, expert advice on raising healthy, happy, productive farm animals: chickens, geese, ducks, rabbits, goats, sheep, and dairy cows.
Each chapter focuses on a different animal, discussing the pros and cons of raising the animal, housing and land requirements, feeding guidelines, health concerns, and a schedule for routine care. Species that are easy to raise, hardy, and companionable are profiled. First-time farmers will discover simple, clear instructions for caring for animals throughout the year, as well as guidelines for processing barnyard products such as milk, wool, and eggs. Combining practical advice from real experts, easy-to-use checklists and charts, a seasonal care calendar, and detailed black-and-white illustrations, Barnyard in Your Backyard offers a comprehensive review of the ins and outs - the tribulations and triumphs - of living with and caring for a small barnyard.
Customer Reviews:
Fantastic!.......2007-09-09
This book tells you everything you need to know for the novice to the experienced. Suggestions for those who want ornamental animals to the getting down to farming people. Pictures are great. Highly suggest this book!
great book!.......2007-08-10
This book works great and spells everything out very easily. Not the most comprehensive I am sure but I actually learned alot from it. I was mostly interested in chicken and sheep as well as ducks and geese. great book for a beginner like myself.
Excellent book, on various farm animals.......2007-08-08
This book is a wealth of knowledge! I own lots of books on raising ducks and chickens, and I have to say this book matches up well with all of my other books. Why is this impressive? Because the other books I'm comparing this book to are books that deal with only one type of animal (ducks, geese, chickens, exc). This book gives almost the same amount of detail as my other books plus it covers: Chickens, Ducks, Geese, Rabbits, Sheep, and Cattle. If your going to raise three or more different forms of live stock as a hobby, this is the only book you will need. If your going to try your hand at commercial production than you will need other books to supplement this book. I gave this 4 stars because the chicken and duck sections were not quite a thorough as some of my other books I own (though it came amazingly close). This is a no brainer purchase for anyone raising three or more of the animals listed above. A must buy...
Best farm book yet.......2007-07-19
Have read lots of books in trying to get spun up on hobby farm life, and this by far takes the cake as number one animal 101. It is well presented, covers all the facts and includes diagrams and discriptions. Will recommend to others as first resource to start with.
it is what the title says!.......2007-07-05
if you've just moved somewhere with a little land and are thinking of adding a few farm-type animals to your yard, this is a great book. It will tell you the demands that each of these little furry/fluffy/downy creatures will make on you, your property, and your bank account! The author gives a great overview of each of the animals mentioned in the title. BUT once you actually purchase the critters, you'll probably need a book that gives more in-depth information, especially in the health area. A great book to help you make educated decisions about what to toss in your ark!!

Must have!.......2007-01-05
This book is a must have for anyone who wants to have farm animals and doesn't know anything about animals. Veterinary Guide for Animal Owners.......2005-09-07
The book contained all the info I was looking for
Excellent Reference.......2001-06-17
At our house, you never know what the kids will bring home next or the parents for that matter. This book has been a quick reference on any new species introduced to our household as far as domesticated animals---we do have a gecko and unfortuately there is no info on exotics in this book. It has become a well worn book as we thumbed through finding answers to problems and also on ways to prevent future problems. We have 3 cats, 2 dogs, a bunch of chickens(cochins and silkies), 2 pigs, a pygmy goat, a shetland sheep and an African Fat tailed Gecko so we needed a book that would cover a lot and this has answered many questions. It has more than paid for itself----if it saves just one vet visit!
THE ANSWERS CAN ALL BE FOUND IN HERE.......2000-08-19
This book more than paid for itself in the first 15 minutes of reading. As the owner of 2 cows, 3 cats, 7 dogs, & 8 goats, I have been using this book as my animal bible. It's written in terms that everyone can understand and the directions are clear and precise. It's saved me many calls and visits to my vet. This is a MUST HAVE book for every pet or animal owner.
excellent for the lay person.......1999-10-12
I recently checked this book out from the library, and now I must have a copy of my own. I have recently started raising show pigs, and believe me this book will help alot. I have already learned some neat things, and look forward to learning more.
Book Description
KEEPING LIVESTOCK HEALTHY is one of the recognized classics in its field. Small Farmer's Journal called it "a major contribution to available farm veterinary literature." Modern Veterinary Practice wrote: ". . . highly recommended to all livestock owners." And Farmstead Magazine said, "So admirably organized and indexed that its information is instantly available."
Now completely revised and updated, this fourth edition draws on the very latest research from experts on each of the five animals covered - horses, cattle, pigs, goats, and sheep. It presents new information on vaccines, artificial insemination, ultrasonography, disease testing, drug treatments, and diseases such as Lyme disease, Potomac fever, bluetongue, foot-and-mouth disease, and mad cow disease. This complete reference on livestock health is an invaluable guide to preventing disease through good nutrition, proper housing, and appropriate care.

Vet student review.......2006-09-23
This book has an overview of diseases for most domestic large animals. I found this text to be too general to be very helpful as a reference guide for folks needing all the details. It does have some decent rule out lists.

Customer Reviews:
This is a sheep book with some goat info added.......2001-12-14
If you are considering this book only for the goat information, save your money and look for a different one. I purchased this book for the goat information and I found that 2/3 of the book is about sheep and the rest is old, obsolete information related to goats....especially meat goats. This book has not come up to speed related to the major changes that have happened over the last 6-7 years and some of their statistics are from 1994. The majority of the goat section covers dairy goats, angora and cashmere goats. The major part of the meat goat information concerns the spanish goats. Sixth edition must mean they have published the goat information six times...not updated it for the sixth time.
Book Description
The 9th Edition of this highly acclaimed, classic text presents today's most effective treatments for every condition or disease affecting cattle, sheep, goats, swine, and horses. Its convenient organization allows readers to approach each disorder either by its presenting symptoms or by a concrete diagnosis. In addition to comprehensive updates on every facet of the field, the book now includes a comprehensive drug formulary plus other new features that make reference quicker than ever before.

pages missing.......2000-09-22
i have reordered this book two times. it has pages missing. i raise bobby calves and the crucial pages that i index are missing. i am assuming that this book is not available complete which makes it useless. it was given to me as a gift from my son who spent somewhere in the neighborhood of 140.00. he is out the money and i am dissatisfied.
ignore those below.......2000-05-05
A fabulous mine of information, the textbook to turn to, it has pride of place on my shelf
Of little use to the academic or practioner........1999-02-07
If you know the diagnosis then good descriptions of the clinical signs and pathogenesis are usually available. However having ploughed through the verbose text, which is in remarkably bad type face, you are rewarded with a minimal treatment section which is extremely frustrating. Copiosly referenced the book is of little use alone requirring a good library and a serach engine to obtain up to date information.
Reasonable for food animals. Hopeless for horses........1998-12-30
I bought the seventh edition of this book whilst a veterinary student, and it has gathered dust. Although there is a great deal of information in this book, which is easily accessed (an advantage over Smith's Large Animal Internal Medicine), it is too brief for serious research and too opinionated for a quick reference. This reviewer also finds the style difficult to read. If the diagnosis is unknown, this is an almost impossible book to refer to and the avoidance of differential lists contributes to this.
For the equine veterinarian, I would recommend Reed and Bayly's 'Equine internal medicine', which is more thorough and better written. For the food animal veterinarian, this book is a possible choice, but it is my opinion that 'Smith', despite its flaws, is a better buy.

Book Description
The aim of the Controlled Reproduction in Farm Animals Series is to provide a general review of the literature dealing with the different ways in which reproduction in the major farm mammals can be controlled and manipulated. It is effectively an expanded and new edition of a previous work, Controlled Breeding in Farm Animals (Pergamon Press, 1983). However, the literature on this subject has expanded so rapidly since the time of the earlier volume, that it is now thought appropriate to publish it in four separate volumes. Buffalo, goats, deer, and camelids have also been added to the species covered. The set of volumes will appeal to reproductive physiologists, animal scientists, and workers in veterinary medicine. Individual volumes should also be of value to all interested in the particular species covered.
