    Book Description

Since carbon sequestration in soils reduces the amount of carbon available to the atmosphere, the Kyoto Protocols have heightened interest in soil carbon pools and their effect on carbon fluxes. Assessment Methods for Soil Carbon addresses many of the questions related to the measurement, monitoring, and verification of organic and inorganic carbon in soils. The major topics covered are: carbon pools; soil sampling and preparation, analytical techniques for soil carbon; soil erosion and sedimentation; remote sensing, GIS and modeling; procedures for scaling carbon data from point and local measurements to regional and even national scales; and economic and policy issues. In Assessment Methods for Soil Carbon, leading researchers show that we now have the ability to measure, monitor, and verify changes to soil carbon. The book establishes the need for standardized methods that can be used by anyone, and helps us better understand the link between the pedosphere (soils) and the atmosphere. It also shows the importance of developing links between the economics of carbon sequestration and the amounts sequestered, and highlights the need for scientists and policy makers to interact to ensure that policies fit within the scope of present technologies.

3 out of 5 stars Good Scientific Manual.......2005-01-19

Laboratory Manual for the Examination of Water, Waste Water, and Soil is a very informative. It starts out speaking about laboratory safety because this book talks about using chemicals and other substances that can be quite harmful. This was definitely one of the finer points of the book starting first and foremost with ways to avoid injury in the laboratory. Next the book goes into explaining how imperative quality control of the results of your laboratory work is. It explains that nothing is more important that the purity and accuracy of your results. The manual then goes into how to organize and catalogue your samples as to not get them confused with one another. In the next section the manual talks about how to take field measurements and how to properly and accurately record your results. It covers the entire test from ph, to calcium carbonate aggression. The last 2 sections go into how to take more detailed and accurate measurements back in the lab to the interpretation of all of the results that you come up with.
While this book uses great detail in explaining the subject on what it was written, as for any ability to hold my interest is where this was lacking. This manual was very dry it obviously was not written to be interesting or anything of that nature, But in all seriousness this was possibly one of the most boring books I have written. The language that was used in the manual was very technical and if you do not know the terminology then it is easy to get confused and lost. Plus this language adds to the boredom because of the frustration that comes with trying to understand the highly scientific terms. But for the purpose that this novel was written for it is perfectly written using precise detail and covering all of the bases and answering all of the questions that may arise in the course of testing water samples. I recommend this book for those who are interested in entering the field of water examination it is a excellent book for those who are looking to get there feet wet in this field. But if you are in search of a page-turner something to hold your attention or just a good read I suggest that you steer far away from this book it is not one that would hold any ones attention for any long stretch of time.

      4 out of 5 stars A very good handbook.......2000-10-27

This manual offers a very good basis not only for experts of water chemistry, water and waste water treatment and environmental protection but also for teachers and students of technical directions at colleges as well as at universities.

225 pages contain all factors playing an important role for examination of water, waste water and soil. 9 chapters include general remarks to laboratory safety (also regarding to waste treatment) and quality control. Furthermore requirements for analytical methods of the different water types and soil are mentioned. Further chapters deal with the preparation and technique of the sampling as well as their application in practice.

Chapter "Laboratory Measurements" describes all important methods in detail. So this book is a perfect handbook for the target group, even without using the attached extensive reference list.

In chapter 7 a huge variety of tables containing especially German legal and technical regulations is an clearly help for interpretation of received results.

This book can be highly recommended as a handbook for everybody dealing with water, waste water and soil treatment.

5 out of 5 stars Simplified but not simplistic!.......2007-02-07

This is a great first book on this subject for people of all ages from junior high to retirees (me)! I was looking for a book that would help me understand soil surveys. Thi book was a perfect solution.

If you have ever tried to read a book on geology (the base of soil science) you may have been overwhelmed by the breadth of detail. Young people would be especially prone to this since they probably have not had chemistry or physics. This book will get you through most of this. Can't imagine how it could be improved. Just loaded with interesting material. Highly recommended. If interested in soil and don't know a lot about it already - then get it.

3 out of 5 stars Soil Science Simplified.......2005-08-10

The book was for a soil science class I was taking. The text seems to be translated from another language, as the sentence structure is very difficult in many places. This is a "beginner's" text, and as such was useful.

5 out of 5 stars Read it twice.......2004-02-26

As they say, don't judge a book by its cover. At first glance, this paperback book appears to be a lightweight study guide. Upon reading it, however, you will find it to contain a mountain of technical information. Every page offers so many relevant details that you will need to read it twice, just to absorb them all. Fortunately, it is not written in a dry, jargonistic manner. As the title implies, the scientific principles involved are simplified for easier digestion and application. This makes the information all the more useful. And although it is not a full-fledged textbook, a prospective reader will still benefit from having a basic knowledge of chemistry before opening this book, because it is not a kids' book either. Take some notes as you read, and you will find it be a real learning experience.

4 out of 5 stars This book was very helpful.......2002-12-16

I really liked this book. I could look through it and find exactlly what I was looking for without having to even read what the chapter was. It was very useful because of my science projet. I had to do a research paper and it was very hard to find information that I could understand but this book was very clear.

5 out of 5 stars beginner soil science.......2000-02-24

This book is great for somebody just starting out in soil science. It explains the basics of soil science very well. I would also recommend this book for anybody interested in learning more about the concepts behind agriculture. Although the entire book may not apply to agriculture, it is completely enriching non-the-less!

      Book Description

This book presents systematic, integrated A-to-Z coverage of state-of-the-art unsaturated zone hydrology. Multi-disciplinary in approach, it provides both a soil physics and an engineering approach to unsaturated zone hydrology. Coverage begins with the basic physical properties and the behavior of clays, and moves on to contaminant transport and other parameters such as spatial variability, scaling, and fractals in the earth sciences. KEY TOPICS: Details analytical solutions for seven analytical infiltration models. Provides a comprehensive description and equations for performing a detailed water balance used to size and design water-storage facilities, reclamation zones for waste-storage facilities, and other water-management facilities. Presents five analytical models for both deterministic and probabilistic solutions to liquid/vapor flow in the unsaturated zone -- including unique coverage of the derivation and use of a three-dimensional analytical solution for flow of NAPLs in the unsaturated zone. Presents eight analytical models to assess unsaturated zone contaminant levels which are permissible to regulators for protection of underlying ground water. Includes a detailed description of the current technology of site characterization and monitoring devices used in unsaturated zone research -- including illustrations, diagrams of connections, and advantages and disadvantages of each. Illustrates real-world problems typical of sites the authors have worked with during the last 10 years. A reference for practicing engineers and environmental law firms.

      5 out of 5 stars Splendid Text.......2004-04-01

Like calculus, unsaturated zone hydrology can only be made so easy. As a soils professor and instructor of this subject, I have waited for 20 years for a text of this sort to come along. It gives me the flexibility to teach both undergraduate and graduate classes. For the students there are many worked examples and for the instructors a great manual that you can order separately. I get the best of both worlds and the students have what is in my opinion, the finest text and reference in this field. Many kudos to the authors for a job well done!

5 out of 5 stars Great text for both teaching and students.......2004-01-23

I was unable to attend a college in my area that offered an unsaturated zone hydrology or soil physics course. As a result, I purchased several books on the subject including those by Hillel, Jury, and Stephens. While they were useful, it was difficult to grasp the material within certain areas then, at the suggestion of a friend I purchased this book. I found it much easier to follow than other texts and very informative both as a study tool and a professional reference for instructors and consultants.

I must admit that the previous review from the skier guy in Denver kinda turned me off, but I bought the book anyway and have never regretted it. Actually, I was able to discuss some aspects with the authors and found their insights particularly useful. Without doubt the material is difficult, but it's laid out well here. I found the answered questions very useful before trying the additional questions to which no answers are given.

While the book is likely not perfect I can say to the guy from Denver that if you were lucky enough to take this class from the author then, kudos to you. Also, one thing I have learned is that it's extremely difficult to have as he put it "a decent and intense class" without a good text. My experience has been that the class generally follows the text. If one is poor, usually both are poor.

My recommendation is that this is a great text and one won't go wrong by purchasing it. In my opinion the best chapters are 1-3, 7-10, and 13, but that those are where my skills are concentrated and they are all well thought out and well written. The list of symbols is also very useful although quite lengthy as they include soil science, hydrology, and engineering symbols for the same areas. I didn't catch that at first. I really like the book compared to others I've studied. Best of all, it helped me master this area and gained me a $10k per year raise in my firm.

2 out of 5 stars 4.5 stars? You have got to be kidding me........2003-04-17

Without question, this book is useful to professional vadose zone scientists as a refrence. I'll even go so far as to say it's the least-bad unsaturated zone book on the market. It scores points for being comprehensive and thorough. The book also looks nice and has good diagrams. Many of us have it on our book shelves here at work. I find myself referring to it occasionally, years after I first studied the text in grad school.
      BUT
After *extensive* study of this text, I hate it. It is very hard to follow for even the sharpest of grad students / hydrologists. For instance, the index of symbols has over 500 entries (thank god there is an index). I found the explanations to be "on a different level" from 95% of the audience of the book, which severely limits its usefulness. This is no "Freeze and Cherry" textbook. And no, I'm no dummy who got frustrated w/ the content and gave up on it - I took Dr. Tindall's unsaturated zone course, persevered, and recieved an A for my efforts.

Once again, the book is good for a refrence if you already know your unsaturated zone science, but forget trying to learn unsat zone hydrolgy from this text unless you have a great prof or 170 IQ. Looking at my book shelf, I have to put this text in the bottom 40%, 2 stars.

      5 out of 5 stars Well-prepared and well-presented summary of unsaturated zone.......2001-12-06

(...) Unsaturated Zone Hydrology for Scientists and Engineers was written from a multidisciplinary perspective. It was designed for upper-level undergraduate and beginning graduate students with a wide range of backgrounds and interests. The book could be used in an introductory course that teaches the major processes in the unsaturated zone and the design of field experiments. It is also suitable for a more advanced course on modeling transport of water, air, solute, and heat in the unsaturated zone.

The book has an attractive cover with an artist’s rendition of the major processes that occur in the unsaturated zone beneath urban and rural areas. The images on the cover depict well the topics covered. The table of contents is easy to follow and quickly reveals that the book’s subject matter is presented in a logical order. Following the introduction, which includes a brief history of unsaturated zone hydrology, are chapters on the physical properties and characteristics of soils, the behavior of clay-water systems, and the energy status and chemical properties of water. These first few chapters provide an excellent foundation for subsequent ones on water flow (including both unsaturated and saturated zones) and the transport of heat, gas, and contaminants. The book contains another six chapters on topics ranging from soil remediation techniques to spatial variability, scaling, and fractals. A list of symbols is given in one of the appendices, which readers will find helpful.

Three aspects of the book I particularly like. First, questions are given at the end of many sections to test the student’s understanding of the material. Detailed answers to these questions are given at the end of each chapter, as well as additional questions that could be assigned to the students. Second, the book covers a wide range of topics, yet discusses them in sufficient detail to be useful as both a teaching aid and a reference book. Third, the book contains a pleasant blend of theoretical and practical information.

This book is a well-prepared and well-presented summary of unsaturated zone hydrology. It covers a fairly broad range of topics and will be of interest to scientists and engineers engaged in a wide variety of unsaturated zone studies. Even the price is quite reasonable! (...)

5 out of 5 stars Very complete, an excellent teaching and reference text........2001-11-10

As a professor of hydrology I have found this book to be the most complete and up-to-date that can be found. I own 25 texts in hydrology, unsaturated zone hydrology, and soil physics, including several dealing with contaminant transport. This book is well written and comprehensive, yet allows me the flexibility to teach courses based on student knowledge. I found this difficult in the past because many students entered our program with no soils or hydrology background. The first few chapters of this book gives the essentials required in these areas and gets the students quickly up to speed.

There are many completed problem sets in the text that show the students how to logically approach and solve very complex problems. The instructor manual that is available separately for the text has been a life saver. It is accurate and allows me to use my own problem sets that I have designed and collected over the years and it lets me supplement with problems that are worked-out in detail within the manual.

For instructors who wish to teach a more advanced modelling course, this book will allow teaching a highly advanced course if desired.

I found a few errors in nomenclature and some inacuracies in a few of the problems. These were minor and were also listed in the errata of the book, which unfortunately was not shipped from the publisher, but obtained from the authors whom I wrote. They quickly sent it to me.

Thank you James Tindall and James Kunkel for a fine text, one that was too long in coming.

        Book Description

The second edition of The Soil Chemistry of Hazardous Materials has been extensively revised and updated since the first edition. The text reflects the state of the science. Much is known about some areas and very little about others. Nevertheless, there is a great deal that is misunderstood about the behavior of chemicals in soil: One of the author's principal objectives in publishing the work is to dispel commonly held misconceptions and correct misapplications; over 100 have been identified and outlined in this edition. The Soil Chemistry of Hazardous Materials is devoted to providing scientists and professionals with a basic knowledge of the principles t hat govern the proper estimation of migration and degradation potential of chemicals in topsoil, and in the saturated and unsaturated zones. These principles apply to chemical behavior in solid and hazardous waste treatment and disposal units employing or impacting soil and other geologic materials--landfarms, landfills, deep well injection systems, compost piles, and sites affected by leaks, spills, and other types of accidental or deliberate chemical releases. A substantial amount of new knowledge concerning the basic nature and properties of soil, the behavior of water in the unsaturated zone, and the behavior of bulk hydrocarbons in soils appear only in this edition. Examples include a discussion of NAPL's and how they move in the subsurface and treatment technologies such as bioremediation, metal stabilization, and permeable walls. Because the focus is on practical applications of these basic chemistry principles, the text incorporates information from other soil science and environmental disciplines where appropriate.

          Book Description

An excellent knowledge base in soil and water chemistry -the ideal basic text for students of the environmental sciences
In Environmental Soil and Water Chemistry, leading soil and water authority V. P. Evangelou presents a complete overview of the principles and applications of soil science, addressing the subject by viewing the interactions between soil and water as a basis for understanding the nature, extent, and treatment of polluted soil and water. The text opens with a discussion of principles-the fundamental tenets of chemistry needed to understand soil and water quality and treatment of polluted resources-and continues with a look at applications for the control and treatment of soil and water. Suitable for advanced undergraduates and beginning graduate students, this extensive, timely volume covers:
          * Water chemistry and mineral solubility; soil minerals and surface chemical properties and their behavior; and electrochemistry and kinetics
          * The control of agricultural chemical pollution and land disturbance pollution; colloids and transport processes in soils; and technologies for measuring quality and executing treatment
          * Specific chemical contaminants and the procedures for their neutralization
In a world where chemical pollutants pose a grave threat to the earth's natural resources, Environmental Soil and Water Chemistry offers students both an excellent textbook and a handy reference on the wide spectrum of environmental problems they will confront outside the classroom.

4 out of 5 stars Contains fundamental principles in soil-water chemistry.......2002-01-03

This book covers wide aspects in the field of soil-water chemistry. The topics are covered amazingly in a very smooth manner and serves as a good reference for college seniors and beginning graduate students in environmental sciences. The book covers most of important fundamental principles in soil-water chemistry. The sections are full with displays and tables, and problems, which I found it very helpful. Despite the complexcity of this topic, the author deserves a lot of credits for writing such a great book. I strongly recommend this book.

            Book Description

This introduction to modern soil chemistry describes chemical processes in soils in terms of established principles of inorganic, organic, and physical chemistry. It aims for a modern conceptual approach rather than empirical description, including the most recently developed explanations for the more controversial topics. The text provides an understanding of the structure of the solid mineral and organic materials from which soils are formed. With the help of diagrams and graphs, it explains such important processes as cation exchange, chemisorption and physical adsorption of organic and inorganic ions and molecules, soil acidification and weathering, oxidation-reduction reactions, and development of soil alkalinity and clay swelling properties. Environmental as well as agricultural topics are covered, illustrated with case studies and individual chapters on agricultural chemicals and pollutants such as heavy metals and toxic organic chemicals. This book defines and addresses the challenge of the future -- to protect the soil ecosystem from the pollutants of an industrial society.
