amazing!.......2006-07-15
I am a 19 year old college student and I LOVE these books! I actually realized this summer that I gave them away a couple of years ago (which I CAN'T believe I did!!) and bought this whole collection online! Being as old as I am and still having fun with them truely shows that these are books that your child will always remember and appreciate!!
great puzzle book for young problem solvers.......2004-09-16
This one volume collects all six of the Puzzle stories -- Puzzle Island, Puzzle Town, Puzzle Farm, Puzzle Castle, Puzzle Planet and Puzzle Mountain. Each story is 32 pags long and contains a two-page introduction followed by 7 two-page spread puzzles and concludes with an answer page. the introduction gives you the background story and several tasks to perform, such as a list of items to find while going through the story. Each puzzle spread has hidden objects as well as a unique puzzle -- a maze or obstacle search or matching, for example. By the end of the story you have collected needed objects and found a "villain" or solved a mystery.
Lots of fun for the younger set, and readily replayable/rereadable.
Can turn kids into book lovers........1998-05-13
This book is a compendium of a half-dozen short books, all of which have the same structure: a protagonist (boys and girls alternate in the various stories), whether a pirate, an astronaut, a knight or farmer, has to get from here to there, and encounters mazes, matching problems, problems finding lost objects and a fairly benign villain along the way. My 5-year old was fascinated with this book. She remains so, even though she has memorized all of the solutions and locations of the hidden objects. Since she can't read yet, Puzzle World was more than she could tackle alone, and that made for hours of participatory parenting, explaining the puzzles and watching her solve them. This book promotes thinking, lap time and a love of books.

Bailey R`s review.......2007-08-09
Once on This Island was a very adventurous book. The characters were well portrayed as they faced tough times and difficult decisions. They all pitched in and helped their family to survive the war. This was an enjoyable book and I recommend it to all readers.
WONDERFUL.......2007-02-01
My 13 yr old says she loved it. I had to search to find it!
It really gives you an inside look of what life was like back then.(13 yr old's words)
Got a copy as a gift.......2004-10-09
I got a copy of this book and I like Mary's character. She is straightfoward and truely amazing at times. This is a good read.
Something is missing........2004-05-21
"Once on This Island" takes place during The War of 1812, but there was a lack of historical information to prove this point. It could have easily been another war. The story itself - three children struggle to live their lives while their father is off fighting for the American cause - is a stable one, though deficient. This could be because the events flowed nicely, without much difficulty, or maybe it was because there was a lack of illnesses and death; realism wasn't truly there. I was hoping for a historical note, but Whelan failed to include one. I'll still read the other two books in the trilogy, but I will not put high expectations on them. I "sorta" recommend.
Good, but still..........2002-09-19
I know, everyone rated this 5 stars. And I know that this book is for kids ages 6-10. I'm 14. This book, Once on this Island, is very good, but I think it could have been better. Still, it is written for younger children, so... Anyway, if you're older than ten, you'll most likely find it boring.
Mary is living on an island in the Great Lakes during the War of 1812. Her father goes off to fight when the British take over her island and shortly after her older brother leaves. Mary's older sister flirts with a British soldier while Mary runs the farm. An Indian friend leaves to fight for the British alongside his long-lost tribe, which adds to the confusion.
The first in a trilogy, the other 2 books are Farewell to this Island and Return to the Island. I havent read them yet, but Im planning to at least read Return to the Island. As I titled this review, it's good, but still...

Book Description
When Hallie and David decide they want a pet cow, their father reluctantly agrees. After all, the children have promised to take care of it, and it will be an educational experience for everybody. But as the family brings their new pet home to their farm, they can't even begin to imagine how educational the experience of living with Cassie will turn out to be. The cow won't produce milk, and the kids try everything. And then they hit upon the solution: Beethoven. Not only does Cassie begin to produce milk, but she develops an insatiable fascination for music and, well, she talks. But Cassie's love for music may get her in trouble when she decides to become a concert pianist.
This wonderful story from renowned actor and author Alan Arkin explores the unique dynamics that make up every family, the small triumphs that flavor life, and the enduring beauty and appeal of music.

I love this book! it is fun and lovely and really quite cuttie wootie~
Cassie Loves beethoven.......2001-01-14
I thought that Cassie Loves Beethoven was good because she could talk and play the piano. Then when she here's Beethoven's music her whole life changes. So then she goe's to a concert and she decides she need's to play an instrument, she tries almost every instrument but nothing seem's to work. Then Hallie and David's dad Myles made Cassie a 40 foot long piano. Then Cassie became very famous, then got mad at a newspaper review and got in a fight. From then on she just played for fun and with no audience.

Great Book for Genealogists.......2007-01-08
I was searching for information that might give me some insight into the lifestyle, customs and feelings of my female German ancestors who settled in south west Illinois in the mid nineteenth century. I found the book "Contented Among Strangers" by Linda Schelbitzki Pickle to be a great help to me. I recommend it to other genealogists with German ancestry who want to understand more about their female ancestors than just names and dates on a chart.
Very informative book.......1998-07-04
The author gives you a real feeling for the lives women emigrating from German speaking countries. It is very informative and quite a good reference. I found it somewhat difficult reading because of the numerous citations and language style.
Very good if you want to find out about the experiences of the German speaking immigrant woman.
Book Description
Starting with one billy goat, 20 does, and a book about goats, author Susan Basquin began her foray into goat farming on Washington Island in Lake Michigan. Her herd grew to 100, and she found reserves of strength and determination to pull her through all sorts of dilemmas and near-disasters.
Customer Reviews:
A fascinating chronicle of affection for animals.......2001-02-10
When Susan Basquin's brother suggested they join forces and develop an Angora goat farm on Lake Michigan's remote Washington Island, she jumped at the offer. The isolation and rural environment would offer her free time for writing and contemplation -- or so she thought. What Susan found out first hand is the sheer physical and mental effort that goes into raising a herd of temperamental goats. For the next six years she struggled, growing founder of her animals, and discovering unknown reserves of strength and energy within herself. Goat Song: My Island Angora Goat Farm is the riveting memoir of Susan's life on Washington Island, a fascinating chronicle of her affection for her animals, her determination to overcome feelings of insecurity, and her reflections on island life. Goat Song is ardently recommended reading for anyone who has ever felt the urge to get away from it all and take the rural life in some isolated Eden.
Goat Song.......2001-01-25
I am/was interested in raising angora goats. This book provided valuable and informative information on that topic in a wonderful, well written story. I haven't decided if it talked me out of the dream or further embedded the dream but the story was great.
A story of gentle strength.......2000-12-30
A poetic narrative, this book reflects life on a large scale as it tells Susan's story of raising angora goats on a small Lake Michigan island. I was touched by the depth of feeling Susan expressed in vividly describing everything from learning to know and care for the goats to living in an isolated community which generously offered friendship and support to a new resident and her risky venture.
Goats and Life.......2000-11-28
This is a marvelous first time out for an author who took to heart the adage "Write about what you know." Yet what Susan Basquin came to know was something few women learn. Late in her 40s, after several years as a writer for a weekly newspaper in Santa Fe, New Mexico, she accepted an invitation from her brother to start a goat farm on an island in Lake michigan, off the tip of a peninsula in northeastern Wisconsin. She wanted to do something different--and different this book is.
It is full of life and death and the natural order of things--which, of course, is life and death. Knowing nothing about goats or farming or island life, or anything else that she had chosen, Basquin just did it. Starting with 21 angora goats, whose wool someday was supposed to bring a profit, she set about keeping them alive and growing the flock, which ultimately numbered 100. The emphasis soon centered on keeping them alive.
Disease, accident and injury were her companions, and she learned how to cope with each of them. With the help of the tight-knit island community, she became a farmer equal to anyone. But isolation--and sometimes loneliness--also became familiar to her. For six years she ran the farm. But then her brother decided to shut it down.
Basquin returned to Santa Fe, and now has written this memoir. it sings with a commitment to life, and the new life she found for herself, surrounded by goats on an island. This is not a life that most women, or men, would choose. But for anyone with an imagination, it is a compelling read. It will make you wish you had been there--and glad you were not. It will expand your concept of the possible. What is still waiting for us all?

Book Description
The Hebridean island of Iona has been the focus of intense outside interest for over fourteen hundred years, from the time of St Columba's monastery in the sixth century through to the transfer of its renowned monuments into the care of Historic Scotland in the year 2000.
Yet the people who lived and worked alongside its sacred sites have been largely overshadowed until now. This book is the first to redress the balance, taking an in-depth look at Iona's economic and social history during the 18th and 19th centuries, a period that saw profound change across the Highlands and Islands.
It charts the agricultural reorganisation that led to a crofting system, follows the islanders through the harsh decade of the potato famine and records their worship and education, their crafts and customs, and the ties of kinship that underpinned their community. A broad range of sources are woven together - documentary, material, topographical and photographic, along with oral testimony handed down the generations - to create a vivid picture of Iona's past.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent text and marvellous photography - a real treat!.......1999-04-29
This is one of the few books that does justice to Iona, an island that has enchanted and captivated visitors for, literally, thousands of years. It is truly difficult to convey the elusive magic of Iona, that combination of physical place and atmosphere which draws so many of us back, time after time. Colin Baxter needs no introduction to those familiar with landscape photography in Scotland, and his work here is up to his usual breath-taking standard. Mairi MacArthur has a solid grounding in the history of the island, and of Argyll and the Highlands, as well as a sympathetic but honest perspective on islanders, past and present. As a guide during your visit to Iona, the book is first-rate. The maps and diagrams are simple but clear and full. The explanations and descriptions help you understand what you see around you, in terms of geology, ecology, human settlements, animal and human life - and including of course the ancient religious centre. It is readable and useful for those less familiar with Scotland and its life and traditions as well as for those of us who live here For those who have visited Iona, it is a lovely reminder. For those who have not yet had that privilege, this is a taster which should have you itching to come.
A fine guide to one of Scotland's richest historical sites........1998-11-02
This book is the latest of Mairi MacArthur's books on her family's native island. It is rich in accurate, well-researched detail, supported by her extensive knowledge of Iona. This has been gained through academic research and through her close acquaintance with the island's residents over many years. Colin Baxter's photographs give an excellent impression of Iona, though generally when on its best behaviour in the summer - it can be a wild place at other times! The island is of interest to tourists, academics and also Christian people wishing to explore this small and incredibly beautiful island, and to see for themselves the place where some of those rugged Celtic saints brought their faith from Ireland to Scotland in the sixth century. The pictures and story of the Abbey show how it remains very much a living home of the Christian faith. It will surely also appeal to the generations of Iona emigrants who have settled in the USA and Canada.
