5 out of 5 stars The Best Drilling Book to Date.......2004-03-10

If you are looking for a good book on environmental, geotechnical or hydrogeology drilling this is the BOOK it is set up so even a driller can understand basic concepts and gives engineers a good idea about drilling practices and concepts.

5 out of 5 stars A very comprehensive and complete book about drilling.......2002-07-31

Im a driller in Mexico, I have found this book very useful, it covers a lot of topics, It is very well explained and very detailed in any subject, from measures to drilling techniques as well as machinery and tools and geology for drillers.

The only poor topic I found on the book, is about pneumatic/hammer drilling altough the topic is covered it is very poor in information about the technique.

How ever in general its a very good and complete book as I said, and its a must in every driller bookshelf

2 out of 5 stars Old and busted.......2007-05-05

I have always found this book to be cumbersome, difficult to navigate, poorly organized, and lacking in sufficient detail. But of course for years it was basically the only game in town, so everyone relied on it. Those days are over. I recently purchased Landscape Architectural Graphic Standards, and it is an outstanding book. If you're trying to decide which one to buy, definitely get Landscape Architectural Graphic Standards instead. And even if you already own Time-Saver Standards, do yourself a huge favor and buy Landscape Architectural Graphic Standards anyway. It covers everything that Time-Saver Standards does plus numerous other topics, all with much better explanations and details. To top things off, it has FAR more graphics and the entire book is better organized an easier to navigate than Time-Saver Standards.

2 out of 5 stars Usefulness.......2006-07-16

As a practicing L.A., I have bought several McGraw-Hill Construction Books. I get a similar result each time: They seem on first look to fulfill the promise, but I found they don't well serve the need in real life. I get far better use out of Architectural Graphic Standards, and I'm looking forward to Wiley's Landscape Architectural Graphic Standards.

1 out of 5 stars buy the book, forget the CD-ROM version.......2005-03-28

I've got the book and was hoping the CD-ROM would enhance using the book, but it doesn't. The content is very slim compared to the book, and the CAD drawings that are included are also of very limited use. Don't bother with the CD-ROM version of TSSLA.

5 out of 5 stars This book is a must!!!!.......2004-02-06

A great book to have. It was a required text for my site technology classes. Kept referring to it. Lots of information. It should be on everyone's bookcase if you're a Landscape Architect student or already in the profession. I highly recommend it.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Terrible lab manual.......2007-02-24

I inherited this lab manual when I started teaching physical geology this semester, and I told my students to return it to the bookstore. It contains factual errors (such as referring to hornblende and other non-metallic minerals as metallic, which they are not - metallic minerals are opaque in thin section), and the pedagogy is highly questionable. In the rock and mineral sections, it relies too heavily on photographs. Students already have a tendency to want to simply match minerals and rocks to pictures, which doesn't work, and this book encourages this. The book is too much talk and not enough action. Students in a lab should be guided to work with objects, not to simply answer questions out of a book. There is too much explanation provided, with little left for students to figure out on their own. Labs should be presented to students as mysteries to be solved, and this book takes all the mystery out of everything.

1 out of 5 stars Geology Prof........2007-01-06

This "lab manual" is VERY thick and far too wordy. Really, it's more of a spiral-bound textbook than a lab manual. Additionally, the lab questions appear in list format at the end of each section, so there is virtually no standardized answersheet for students to record their work on. That not only makes it harder on the students, but efficient grading is nearly impossible unless the instructor makes his/her own taylor-made answer sheets for the students to use on EACH lab. As if that weren't bad enough, the lab manual's companion web site is horrid. I am amazed that the AGI and the NAGT produced this lab manual.

4 out of 5 stars Because they asked me to.......2006-11-04

I bought this book for school, since my school was out of the book and this one was cheaper. It does the job, it is probably less expensive than your school, and you can't get a used one because usually some of the pages you need are missing.

5 out of 5 stars Laboratory Manual in Physical Geology.......2006-08-08

Publishers are driving me nuts with their inflated prices...they made a small number of edition #6 which was considered their best one and then let their supplies run out so that schools would have to buy their "new" one. After flipping through it, it is clear that it is nearly identical to the sixth edition lab manual. Such a waste.

Book Description

Are you ready for the Cob Cottage? This is a building method so old and so simple that it has been all but forgotten in the rush to synthetics. A cob cottage, cobb, however, might be the ultimate expression of ecological design, a structure so attuned to its surroundings that its creators refer to it as "an ecstatic house."
The authors build a house the way others create a natural garden. They use the oldest, most available materials imaginable—earth, clay, sand, straw, and water—and blend them to redefine the future (and past) of building. Cob (the word comes from an Old English root, meaning "lump") is a mixture of non-toxic, recyclable, and often free materials. Building with cob requires no forms, no cement, and no machinery of any kind. Builders actually sculpt their structures by hand.
Building with earth is nothing new to America; the oldest structures on the continent were built with adobe bricks. Adobe, however, has been geographically limited to the Southwest. The limits of cob are defined only by the builder's imagination.
Cob offers answers regarding our role in Nature, family and society, about why we feel the ways that we do, about what's missing in our lives. Cob comes as a revelation, a key to a saner world.
Cob has been a traditional building process for millennia in Europe, even in rainy and windy climates like the British Isles, where many cob buildings still serve as family homes after hundreds of years. The technique is newly arrived to the Americas, and, as with so many social trends, the early adopters are in the Pacific Northwest.
Cob houses (or cottages, since they are always efficiently small by American construction standards) are not only compatible with their surroundings, they ARE their surroundings, literally rising up from the earth. They are full of light, energy-efficient, and cozy, with curved walls and built-in, whimsical touches. They are delightful. They are ecstatic.

5 out of 5 stars Practical, Comforting, and Fun.......2007-01-06

This book gives basic instructions on everything you need to know about cob home construction with many illustrations and a great set of glossy color photos in the middle of the book.

This book is great to read even if you never build a cob home because of the amount of information it contains that can be of use for any kind of house.

Also, the book walks the reader through several excercises that are meant to open up one's own innate creativity.

I really enjoyed the integration of spiritual philosophy into very practical instructions, it makes for a great balance.

I felt that the book was very fun to read and put me into a lighthearted mood.

The book also contains many references to other natural/alternative building techniques that can be employed instead of or in addition to cob.

Enjoy!

If there is one book that you need to read than this is it. Get your feet in the mud and find out who you really are. This book changed my life. Gave me the empowerment to throw off the chains of being dependent on paying alot of money for a basic need: good housing. Now I've embarked on a path of creativity, to build a house that is healthy, and will suit all my needs. My thanks are great!

5 out of 5 stars Stunning AND the Absolute Last Word in Cob Info.......2006-03-23

I spent hours and hours with this beautiful and entertaining book, and I was only barely interested in Cob! This book is absolutely terrific, it is wonderfully and beautifully illustrated, includes color photos of some great cob houses, and is absolutely THE book you need if you want to learn about cob, or build your own cob structure. It is a wonderful balance of fun, personal stories, expertise, and technical info. (And really very inclusive too!) I read both Becky's and then this book. It really made me comfortable with cobbing because it is so well done, so inclusive and informative. A testimonial: Some time after reading this book over and over, we decided that cob was not appropriate for our site, and I STILL recently picked up this book for a good read!

5 out of 5 stars Simply gorgeous!.......2005-09-23

First, it's fun just to browse through the gorgeous homes and creations in this book. Second, cob is well researched and documented here, for instance, did you know there are cob homes in Devonshire England that are over 400 years old? Third, this is a remarkably practical handbook for siting, designing, and building a home from cob.
On a practical note, you might want to start with a cob oven for practice. Kiko Denzer wrote a lovely book on the subject, "Building your own wood fired oven". Cob is incredibly fun to work with, but very, very labor intensive.
I really wish I could give this book six stars, because it's truly a fabulous and peerless manual for building with cob.
Buy it, you won't regret it a bit! It's a book you'll go back to again and again, and dream with on cold winter days.

5 out of 5 stars Essential reference for a Civil Engineer working with Water.......2003-01-17

I used this book as a course text in one course at grad school, and an unofficial text in numerous other courses. It is fairly specialized, geared toward the the intersection of civil engineering and hydrology. It contains an impressive breadth of subjects, some of which may now seem a little technologically quaint (although section 25.5.4 on meteor-burst telemetry is still incredibly cool). The bread and butter is immensely useful as a reference. In particular, I was impressed with the statistical elements of chapter 18, regarding the frequency analysis of extreme events.

The handbook has 29 chapters and 58 contributors:

part 1 - hydrologic cycle

1: Hydrology
2: Climatology
3: Precipitation
4: Evaporation
5: Infiltration and Soil Water Movement
6: Groundwater Flow
7: Snow and floating ice
8: Streamflow
9: Flood runoff
10: Flow routing

Part 2 - hydrologic transport

11: Water Quality
12: Erosion and Sediment Transport
13: Hydrologic effects of land use change
14: Contaminant transport in surface water
15: Contaminant transport in unsaturated flow
16: Contaminant transport in groundwater

part 3: hydrologic statistics

17: Statistical treatment of hydrologic data
18: Frequency analysis of extreme events
19: Analysis and modeling of hydrologic time series
20: Geostatistics

part 4: hydrologic technology

21: Computer models for surface water
22: Computer models for subsurface wate
23: Advances in hydrologic computation
24: Remote sensing

25: Automated data aquisition and transmission
26: Hydrologic forecasting
27: Hydrologic design for water use
28: Hydrologic design for urban drainage and flood control
29: Hydrologic design for groundwater pollution control

5 out of 5 stars Handbook of Hydrology.......2001-11-09

The book covers everything from the hydrologic cycle, climatology and precipitation to hydrologic design for groudnwater pollution control. This is a great book to use for reference material. I keep going back to this text when ever I am looking for a quick reference.

5 out of 5 stars The must have book for hydrology.......2000-04-26

The handbook of hydrology is the bible for engineers and scientists in the field of hydrology. The text covers all facets of the topic with the most knowledgable perspectives from current research. My most referenced Handbook of Hydrology chapter is Ch. 18 on the frequency analysis of extreme events. Don't practice in the field without this text on your shelf.

Since reading this book my friends and family have renamed me clerd (cloud nerd). I love this book. It is written to be informative and amusing. That's the best way to learn. I remember the lectures I had where the professors made me laugh, but remember less when they stared at their shoes and mumbled.

The book describes a cloud genera per chapter, starting with the nomenclature and progressing through the science and is interspersed with all sorts of tales and anecdotes of history and art. It also goes into weird cloud phenomena such as sprites, blue jets, sun dogs and rainbows. There are beautiful pictures of clouds, science figures and art reproductions.

I would recommend this book to anyone who is even only vaguely interested in learning about what is going on above them. Gavin will draw you in and make a clerd out of you too.

Knowing the name of something is not the same as really knowing it, and this book goes much further than merely identifying the ten major types of clouds, with descriptions and pictures. And the numerous species and sub-varieties within each species. And variants and adjuncts. Accessory clouds and supplementary features. Man-made and man-altered clouds.

Pretor-Pinney explains how and why and where each cloud forms, gives a little history lesson, some poetry, and some literary or painting references for almost every type, as well as a number of typically-British humourous stories. In fact the author's umbrella-dry humour takes what is a potentially twee subject matter and makes it quite charming, really.

Except for the boring Stratus nebulosus, the plain old rain cloud about which Pretor-Pinney is hard-pressed to find any poetry, or art, or positive things to say. The best he can muster is, "it's never known to make you feel elated." Classic!

In the end, the author has accomplished much more than a Field Guide to Clouds, having really brought cloudspotting up to respectibility, and giving the reader the impression that he (or she) really does "know clouds" well beyond the mere recitation of their given names.

While I would have prefered photos of clouds instead of drawings I have enjoyed The Clouds Spotter's Guide. I first heard about the guide from the Cloud Appreciation Society when it was listed on the Cool Tools web site. After going to the Cloud Appreciation Societies web site I just had to get the book. I think its a must have for anyone who loves clouds and wants to know more about them.

Great content, both scientific and soulful. Very accessible to every level of reader. I only wish the photos were in color.

Match the clouds you see with one of the full-color cloud photographs in "The Weather Wizard's Cloud Book," and the caption beneath the photograph will tell you what kind of weather to expect. With amazing accuracy, this simple system can account for swiftly changing local weather developments more effectively than weather maps or official area forecasts, which are issued well in advance of weather conditions.

I bought this book in preparation for an advanced mariner's meteorology course, and could not have made this comment without having first gained that higher level of knowledge.

This is a suberb book with two major flaws:

    1) It sticks to the two-dimensional depiction of weather that is common to the average person. Although there are a couple of illustrations showing altitude, the author could easily have put in a few pages on the rotation of the earth, the 500 mb level, and how weather on the surface cannot be understood without underestanding what is happening at the 18,000 level. As my instructor put it, the high-level troughs are the chicken that hatches the surface level (scrambled) egg.

    2) It provides the pictures of the clouds, but missed the key chance to break down the names into the original latin meanings, to create a matrix of high (Cirro), medium (alto), and low (strato), with substantive meaning including layer (stratus), curly (cirrus), stacked in a vertical heap (cumulo-cumulus), and delivering rain (nimbus).

Add this little matrix above, and read "Mariner's Guide to the 500-Millibar Chart" by Joe Stenkiewicz and Lee Chesneau, and Google for to find his web site, and you'll have all you need to move to the better three-dimensional interactive viewing of weather and weather charts.

    I also recommend Understanding Weatherfax

    4 out of 5 stars A good little book.......2007-03-15

A very handy book for "instant" weather forcasting. Interesting to read and written with a bit of humor. The only shortcoming is the arrangment of the photographs of the different clouds, they are not in logical sequence.

3 out of 5 stars for newbies to weather .......2006-06-27

OK book for newbies or beginners to this interesting hobby(uninteresting if in Michigan)

4 out of 5 stars Small Gem of a Book..........2006-06-18

This small hard to find book (unless you order it online) starts with a basic premise: to predict the weather you need to do 2 things-determine the direction of the wind and identify the clouds currently in the sky. That being said, I would consider this book a great primer for anyone interested in naked eye weather forecasting.

The book includes color cloud charts, discusses weather folklore, precipitation, warm and cold fronts, and volcanic eruptions.

This a general primer. The information is not spoon fed to the reader.

The strength of this approach is Rubin's writing is entertaining and lively, and will enourage you to not only make your own weather predictions, but to also seek more information outside the scope of the book.

The weakness is that some of the material is incomplete. The book was completed by Louis Rubin's children with the help of a meteorologist after Rubin passed away (based on the Introduction), using Rubin's cloud photo collections and his collected writings.

As a result, some of the material is incomplete. For example, Rubin describes the 4 types of clouds and the 10 specific clouds most associated with weather changes. You then have to search all over the book to find those 10 clouds, and even then, you're not sure (based on the prefixed names) if you're looking at the right photographs. I suspect at the time of his passing, Rubin's cloud photo collection was far from complete.

That being said, I still liked the book, consider it a keeper, and respect Rubin's work in this area as an amateur meteorologist.

    5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2005-09-13

If your into forcasting weather, or just want to know how to, this book is for you.

      Book Description

Cob building uses a simple mixture of clay subsoil, aggregate, straw, and water to create solid structural walls, built without shuttering or forms, on a stone plinth. This ancient practice has been used throughout Britain for centuries—in fact, the material is so strong and durable that it is currently in use for forty-five thousand houses in Cornwall, a county in southern England.
Building with Cob covers everything from design, planning, and siting to roofs, insulation, and floors. It is lavishly illustrated with more than three hundred inspirational color photographs. The authors have recently been commissioned to build a thirty-classroom school in England in 2006; it will be the largest new cob construction project in the Western hemisphere.

5 out of 5 stars "One stop" book for cob building.......2007-06-17

Those of you who have read "The Hand-Sculpted House" by Ianto Evans will like this book. It is an excellent guide to building with cob. I felt that every aspect of building a house was covered in enough detail that you could start building with cob if you were even a little bit handy. Although building a house is covered well, it includes building fireplaces and cob ovens, too.

I paid forty five dollars for my copy at the Midwest Renewable Energy Fair and see now that I could have saved fifteen dollars. Still, if you are looking for just one book to cover many aspects of using cob then you won't go wrong with this book.

5 out of 5 stars Todo lo que hace falta saber..........2007-05-30

5 out of 5 stars Building with Earth, i.e. Adobe.......2006-10-04

Even after reading this book pretty carefully, and even looking it up in the dictionary, I never got a good definition of the word 'COB.' None the less, what he's talking about would be called adobe in this country. That is, you take subsoil with a reasonably high clay content, mix it with sand, straw and perhaps a few other things, and you get a remarkably strong building material.

I was involved with a friend that wanted to modify his adobe houst by taking out a window and converting it into a door. The adobe in his house was well aged, about a hundred years. Pulling the window out was easy. Then we got to removing the adobe. We intended to just pick up the bricks and move them aside. They wouldn't move. Pry them with a long iron rod, they wouldn't move. Hit them with a pick and it hardly made a dent. Eventually he got the bricks out of the way using a jackhammer.

This book is on building houses out of earth. It's written in England where there are an estimated half million cob houses. And it talks about the way things are done over there. Not too different than here, except for the building codes. But, of coure, the building codes in this country are quite different in detail of how they are in England. I don't have any idea how many there are in the US. It is certainly no longer a common building method here. My guess is that building within a city limit will be difficult.

All in all, this is probably the best book I've seen on the subject.

5 out of 5 stars An essential guide.......2006-07-25

If you want to create a cob structure, BUILDING WITH COB: A STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE is the item of choice, whether it be for a home or an outbuilding. Photos by Ray Main accompany details on how to pair cob building requirements with local construction codes and standards, offering both construction and overall maintenance guidelines. From different kinds of thatch and their lifespans to manufactured paint choices, BUILDING WITH COB is an essential guide.

5 out of 5 stars The best book on cob building.......2006-07-08

This book truly lives up to its cover credits and description of contents:-

"...the most practical and beautifully illustrated book on earth building ever published."

"An inspiring vision and practical guide..."

The step-by-step instructions for creating cob structures are easy to follow, practical and a pleasure to read.

A deep insight and wisdom flows through the words that is uplifting and inspiring. Reminding the reader that they, and the structures they build have a place in Nature.

Also that building with natural substances obeys certain rhythms and laws. Observing these leads to harmonious results and can be fun .

The effect of reading this book is similar to that of reading Christopher Alexander (Pattern Language/Timeless Way of Building). His influence is apparent, and present in some of the quotes.

The illustrations and photographs are clear and graphically excellent, adding visual detail to the text that complements the instructions perfectly. Making it easy for a complete beginner to understand and follow.

The section with information on natural finishes, detailing lime plasters, renders, washes, earthen plasters, and home made clay and casein paints, contains essential basic information, scientific facts, and questions and answers. Also very practical `how-to' instructions, text & ideas.

Finely thought out facts and legalities, including an interview with a specialist Architect are in the informative chapter which advises on constructing cob buildings which comply with modern building standards.

The guidance on restoring and repairing old cob structures details everything from how to make cob blocks, to typical problems you may find.

Useful and helpful at a time when many old buildings are being renovated.

The book is completed with very comprehensive list of resources and suppliers.
