Customer Reviews:
One of the favorites at my house!.......2007-04-26
This is one of my son's favorite books and has been for a LONG time. If your kids love animals, they will LOVE this book!
Fisher-Price Lift-the-Flap Playbooks.......2007-01-04
A good sturdy book for a young child and one that will hold up.
Great Little Book.......2007-01-03
My granddaughter loves to lift the flaps to see what is underneath. This book is one that she can enjoy for a long time.
Excellent learning book.......2006-11-14
I bought this for my 1 year old daughter who LOVES it. The first day we read it over and over again for half an hour. Fortunately, there are also lots of other interesting animals/things in the background to point to and name. So, not only does it alleviate adult monotony, it expands your child's vocabulary. All of the characters in the book are drawn to look exactly like the other Fisher Price Little People toys, so if you have the barnyard playset they are easier to identify and link. The flaps are sturdy and easy for little fingers to get under to lift. One of my daughter's favorites!
Fun book for teaching preschool concepts.......2006-08-29
I am not the biggest fan of the Little People product line, but this book is really quite good. It is a very fun book that most preschoolers will really enjoy. It's a great way to get your child involved and excited about counting, identifying shapes, colors and animals and understanding opposites.

Customer Reviews:
Wrong animal on the last page..........2007-08-12
The last thing I want to do is teach my child the wrong farm animals. For those who don't know the white woolly thing, that says 'baa' is a sheep. The author should have known better, there are only five animals in the book.
Best of its kind.......2007-07-09
There are so many touch- the- animal books.
This one stands apart because of the details. It increases vocabulary (on one page it will say "touch," and on another "stroke," for example) and has interesting but not difficult sentence structure. What I like the best, though, is that unlike most animal books the fur is "growing" in the correct direction! Someone actually took the time to make sure the cow's hair grows up the nose instead of down, a small thing yet important.
It's also on very sturdy pages for repeated enjoyment.
good but not soft enough.......2007-05-14
Nice book, but it is a pitty it has hardcover, because it can harm kid's gums.
good pick.......2007-05-12
I love that the book allows my child to feel different parts of the animals. The book is very entertaining as well as educational. I just wish the colors were brighter.
My Fuzzy Farm Babies.......2007-01-09
This book is really cute. My 16 month old grandson loves to touch the fuzzy and furry animals...this book also holds his attention which is a plus!

Customer Reviews:
We liked it!.......2007-01-10
I bought this for my 7 year-old daughter for Christmas. She really liked the dolls, and we thought the backgrounds and the pockets for the dolls were great. The only problem is that even though the dolls are punch-outs, the clothes have to be cut out very precisely with scissors, so she needed a lot of help with that.
Need to cut out.......2006-09-04
I'm not sure why the description says "easy to remove" clothes, because I had to cut everything except the dolls out. Maybe they meant easy to remove from the dolls, or maybe I just got a bad lot! But I had no idea I was going to have to cut everything out in order to use it! My hand is hurting! It's a cute set but also a little flimsy (while punching out the dolls a couple of them tore on the tabs).
Lots of fun.......2006-01-06
I gave this to my granddaughter on her 5th birthday. Her mother had already been reading her the primary Little House books. She was a big fan of them so she was thrilled to get the paper dolls so she could act out some of the stories she had been hearing.
This probably wouldn't be much fun for a kid who had not heard the Little House stories or a kid who has no imagination. But for my granddaughter, it was the perfect gift!
Wonderful Little Girl Play Day.......2000-02-19
The Big Woods Collection of My Book of Little House Paper Dolls is a charming and endearing set of paper dolls and props. You can either be inside the log cabin or outdoors in view of it. Either way, it will provide an afternoon of delight for any little girl

epitaph for a peach.......2007-10-02

Not so much an epitaph, but a love letter to the land.......2007-08-08
I feel a connection with David Masumoto. Not that I've met him or anything - in fact, there's a good chance I never will (although I keep hoping that one summer day I can make it over to his farm to pick peaches). No, this feeling is based on an impression that we have both fought the same fight over different things, for the same reasons. It is also because he writes so poignantly about a landscape I grew up in. Mr. Masumoto is an organic farmer in the valley of California, and his story is becoming more and more familiar to me as I see this way of life disappearing across the country.
A third generation Japanese American peach and grape farmer, David Masumoto inherited the family orchard from his father. He also had the heritage of his childhood memories of how that particular peach variety, Sun Crest, tasted and ran with juice unlike the pretty red baseballs that have passed for today's supermarket peach varieties. Mr. M wanted to show the world how delightful an old-fashioned peach could be.
When he took over his father's farm, he resolved to not only continue growing his Sun Crests, but to do it organically. This would prove challenging in our day and age of cheap, quick fixes; moreover, it would test his strongly felt ideals. The land needed to heal and replenish itself after years of chemical fertilizers and toxic pest control methods. Masumoto had to take his example from research on other organic farming practices, planting wildflowers to encourage beneficial insect life and sowing "green manure" crops to act as natural mulch and compost. All this took time, patience, and faith that his hard work would eventually pay off.
Epitaph for a Peach is rich in sensory descriptions, philosophy, and nostalgic flashbacks. It is a picture of the way a farmer's life is connected to the seasons, capricious weather patterns, and changing market conditions. Not incidentally, Masumoto also teaches about the obscure history of Japanese farmers in the Valley - something that even I, native to Fresno, had little idea of. Reading this book was a slow, thoughtful experience much in the same manner that one slows down to savor a rich fruit. Recommended to anybody interested in history, growing food, or the vanishing California landscape.

The Struggle Continues.......2004-01-24
I live somewhat north of the area Mr. Masumoto writes about - where the San Francisco Bay Area Suburbs collide with the San Joaquin Farmlands. The Peach and Cherry Orchards and the Sweet Corn, Tomatoes and Strawberries are currently holding their own - but like Mr. Masumoto's Peaches and Grapes, only tenuously, and with great courage. If you would like to understand not only how these people live, but who and why they are, you should read this book. It is both beautifully written and thought provoking.
Epitaph for a Peach.......2002-07-31
It is rare to read a book where the author works miracles with his hands and his words. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys non-fiction but finds it dry, without humanity. David Mas Masumoto is anything but dry. His land may be at times, but his poetic prose is anything but. His relationship with his family, his family's farm and nature is a rare combination. I highly recommend this read.
Best book about farming I've ever read.......2001-06-09
"Epitaph" is a gem and a masterpiece. Masumoto is a good farmer, a truly dedicated family man and a gifted writer. The story is in part about his love affair with a wonderful variety of peach.
City people will know why supermarket peaches disappoint and country people will recognize the sad story of a farmer who, the harder he tries the more frustration he finds. The peaches you find in the supermarket are there because the consumer/supermarket/broker/ value "shelf life" more than flavor.
Peaches don't travel well and they don't last long. The farmer must choose the right variety, prune it exactly the right way at exactly the right time, fertilize and water at the right time, pray fervently for the right weather conditions.
Only then, if the peach absorbs enough sun to fully mature, will it have the full bursting ambrosial flavor a peach should have. Only the sun can make a peach sweet and flavorful. Most really delicious peaches won't last more than three or four days after they are picked.
A good peach should be eaten as it is right out of hand. Not put in a pie or jam or cake. Only a good farmer can grow a perfect peach and no supermarket want them. Where is the answer?
You'll fall in love with farming and weep a bit as you read the Masumoto family story. Perhaps you won't fully appreciate what today's farmers are up against, but this book will give you more insight than you ever had before.
If you are from a farming family you will fully appreciate every word of this beautiful story of a San Joaquin Valley farm.
Book Description
Before Horatio Clare was born, his parents fell in love with a place -- a remote sheep farm in Wales, physically and in every other way far from the
lives they were forging as young professionals in London. The farm was high up a mountain, nearly impassable in winter. The neighbors were surly, or perhaps just unused to foreigners. But the setting was breathtaking, and soon it changed Jenny's and Robert's lives.
What began as the somewhat conventional dream of a young, ambitious couple from London looking for a weekend home quickly became a different vision. Horatio's mother, romantic and tenacious, found it impossible to leave the fierce and beautiful land. She abandoned her job, her social world, and eventually her marriage to raise her two sons in the company of a herd of sheep, a few dogs, and the badgers, foxes, and mice who had prior claim to her new world.
While other boys were going to films and listening to rock music, Horatio was weaning ewes and watching weather and surviving the furor of irascible neighbors. His childhood was marked by wonder and joy, and it is that wonderment that he bestows upon the reader as he recounts the story of the ancient, sometimes brutal, way of life on a hill farm. This wise book is a moving tribute to his mother, both beautiful and brave.
Customer Reviews:
Wow........2007-10-04
Exceptional. The author has such a masterful command of language that finishing the book hurts. Believe me, I have zip interest in sheep, and I was left gripping the book until done. The ending had me medicating myself with cookies--such a sharp use of English, when aimed toward the melancholy, cuts deep. I recommend oreos.
Poetic writing.......2007-01-11
I could not put this book down once I began it, but also, did not want it to end. The detail and creativity in describing his incredible childhood and his mother brought back memories of my own Welsh summers. I originally bought this book for a friend, but decided to keep it for myself, and have since ordered three more to share with family and friends. Absolutely lovely writing---
poetic reflections.......2006-10-04
This is the first book that has pushed me to sing its praises in a review at Amazon. It has to be the unique combination of wonderful humor, insight and great storytelling. There a passages contained in this book that have the resonance of the best from Cormac McCarthy. I might be more affected by them due to my similiar upbringing as the author, but his description of the natural world around him, it's rythmes and rules are spot on and will ring true to anyone who has grown up abiding to the forces of nature. Well done!

Book Description
Join Laura and her family on their journey across the flat Kansas prairie. There are gophers and rabbits to play with in the daytime, and a cozy camp awaits at night. Renée Graef's enchanting full-color illustrations, inspired by Garth Williams' classic artwork, bring Laura and her family lovingly to life in this ninth title in the My First Little House Books series, picture books adapted from Laura Ingalls Wilder's beloved storybooks.
Customer Reviews:
A Classic for Young Children.......2007-02-20
Prairie Day, an adaptation from the Little House on the Prarie classic series, will delight children and peak their interest in Pioneering life. The illustrations capture the attention and imagination of young children, whetting their appetite for more.
This adaptation shows kids that riding accross the prairie in a covered wagon is not all "fun and games." What do pioneering families do when the ride gets a bit "boring?" Take a break, of course! Kids will enjoy learning what kinds of foods pioneering families ate, how they cooked and what they did without hotels while travelling accross America.
A Trip Down Memory Lane.......2000-04-05
I am the mother of a two year old daughter and was delighted to find the magic of the Laura Ingalls Wilder books captured in a format that is perfect for small children. As a child, I became fascinated with the adventures of Laura, Mary and their baby sister Carrie. Prairie Day is a synopsis of the Little House on the Prairie book. With vivid drawings that have been inspired by the artwork on the original covers by Garth Williams, Renee Graef manages to convey the story in pictures that have captured the imagination of my daughter. I look forward to sharing with her the original books in the future, but meanwhile we will continue to enjoy the series of books that Prairie Day is a part of.

Winter on the Farm introduces your children to Almanzo and his family. This classic tale shows how families share household responsibility and remind us how to respect our siblings and our parents. Almanzo works hard along-side his older brother and is happy to be praised by his father for a job well-done.
Great way to introduce your kids to the Little House series!.......2006-03-16
These books are a great way to get your younger child interested in the Little House books. The pictures are beautiful. My 3 year old became interested in them when she was 2 and carries them all over the house. We read them so much she has them memorized!
Wonderful Book for Boys.......2006-01-15
This is a strong, family/work ethic "history" book for boys, which is rare. This is on my list for gifts right along side, "Mike Mulligan and his Steam Shovel".

Book Description
Laura is delighted when a soft, thick snow falls in late spring in the Big Woods of Wisconsin. A late snow helps the trees make more sap for maple syrup, and maple syrup means sweet sugar cakes and sticky fingers for Laura! Doris Ettlinger's enchanting full-color illustrations, inspired by Garth Williams's artwork, perfectly capture Laura and her family in this My First Little House Book, adapted from Laura Ingalls Wilder's Little House in the Big Woods.
Customer Reviews:
Sweet and Cozy.......2007-02-20
Sugar Snow, an adaptation from the Little House on the Prarie classic series, will delight children and peak their interest in Pioneering life. The illustrations capture the attention and imagination of young children, whetting their appetite for more.
In this tale, kids learn about how children used to pass time before the advent of TV. They also get a mini lesson on what it takes to make a pancake favorite...MAPLE SYRUP! A sweet delight for you and your child!
Great Series.......2005-02-20
One of the things I like about this book for young readers is that the same vocabulary words are repeated throughout the series so that the kids can build on what they learned in one book while they're reading the next.
At first, I was disappointed with the series since I didn't think it did justice to the Little House series that I treasured myself as a girl. After a few reads, however, I see that the magic of Laura Ingalls Wilder's stories shines through in this series with Renee Graef's illustrations. How else do you explain to a four-year-old what a log cabin is really like? I am surprised how many "How.." and "Why..." questions this series has provoked. Regarding this book in particular, my daughter asked about a million questions about the maple syrup-making process.
Beautiful book........2002-01-03
My students are learning English and American culture. They learn to read these books and are highly motivated because the television show mirrors the books so closely. They can go on to read the real little house on the prarie books and enjoy them.
Kids are fascinated.......2000-11-22
Life in the "Little House" days is so different from my own kids' suburban lives that they are fascinated by this series. The reviewer who wrote that these are a poor substitute for the real thing is wrong. These are a great introduction for kids to these books, help them get a historical perspective of earlier American life, and will wet their appetite to read the original Little House books when they are old enough.
First Snow.......2000-05-15
This is a good way to give your kids a taste of the Little House on the Prairie that they can read themselves. Easy to read and a delightful story. Soft watercolored pictures throughout the story. I recommend this series to get your child reading.
