Book Description
This book provides a comprehensive and current source of information on fishesincluding systematics, zoogeography, behavior, and conservation of fishesthat is often needed by professionals as background for writing accurate reports. This book covers the structure and physiology, evolution and taxonomy, zoogeography, and ecology and conservation of fishes. For fisheries biologists, conservation biologists, and aquatic ecologists that need an up-to-date reference on Ichthyology.
Customer Reviews:
A total waste.......2007-09-01
This "outline" consists of terms with definitions which would be okay if the terms matched the text or if the definitions matched ichthyology! In practically every chapter, you'll be given the term, "water column." In chapter 18 when you see the term "water column" yet one more time, you wonder where the information is about the minnow family that is supposed to be the subject of the chapter. In chapter 36, you see the term, "surface water" for the umpteenth time, but nothing about Arctic fishes or their adaptations. In summary, there is NO OUTLINE-FORM for ANYTHING!, just the same old elementary biology terms over and over again.
Be sure to note that the online access has NO additional information from the text, so DO NOt pay for online access--IT'S WORTHLESS TOO!
Only terms might be okay, except they don't match the text. For example the term "operculum" has several definitions; and in ichthyology it means the bony covering of a gill. But this book reports the definition of "operculum" to be: "The operculum is partly in the most posterior portion of the inferior frontal gyrus of the frontal lobe in the brain. One famous part of the operculum is Broca's area which plays an important role in converzation [sic] or speech production, reading and writing" (page 8). Clearly one can see that this text does not match my ichthyology texbook about fish! Speech reading, writing and speaking in fish? This is total rip-off!
Wrong Book.......2006-08-19
I had to return this item because it was incorrectly represented on the website. It is advertised as the book but, in reality, it is a study guide that it made to accompany the book. It is important that Amazon make that distinction on the website.
Very Accessible Introduction Even for a Non-Specialist.......2005-05-21
Moyle and Cech's text reads like two books, Cech's introduction to fish anatomy and Moyle's discussion of behavior and conservation (which is precisely how they use the text in their UC Davis classes). While first half of the book is much more technical than the second half, both are accessible to the non-specialist. I hadn't taken Biology since High School and was able to process most of the material with minimal referencing of secondary sources. Both authors are good writers who incorporate subtle humor and have the ability to convey some of their passion for fish making this a somewhat less dry text book than the general tendency. I learned an incredible amount from these pages and highly recommend this text.
Great book.......2005-03-03
This is really a great text book that covers everything from anatomy, behaviour and fish senses, passing through each fish order, until reach valiable aspects of fish comprehension, like zoogeography and aquatic ecology. Because it's scientific writing, the book is fullfilled with graphics and diagrams, so in the beginning the unaware reader should feel such level of difficulty, but it doesnt compromises at all the inner knowledge the book wants to pass.
Sure an awesome title!
THE text on the fishes..........2001-10-30
I am an avid fish fanatic. Moyle and Cech have produced what should be the greatest book of scientific interest on the subject. Seems like there is a but there? There is, this is a text book. If you are taking ichthyology, an upper level (sometimes graduate level) course on fishes this book will be your best friend. It is critical to understanding the largest group of vertebrates. It is well organized, fact filled and well cited. But, if you don't have Biology one and two, some chemistry, physiology and an introductory zoology course behind you it will lose you at the introduction. Even though I rate it high I would wait until a professor says you have to buy it.

Long overdue.......2003-10-03
An international panel of contributors give us an overview of the present situation in sea ice research. It covers the physical and chemical properties of sea ice and its role in the global climate. A large part of the book is given to the imoprtance of sea ice in marine biology. That is an area long overlooked by textbooks.

Great Book.......2006-02-05
Matt was my prof for aquaculture and his book mimics his understandable method of teaching. It is readable, but not patronizing. He was a pioneer of aquaculture at Harbor Branch. Recommend this and his class for anyone interested in aquaculture
intro to aquaculture.......2000-04-12
a great book to get a foot in the door in the aquaculture industry. i am currently an aquaculture student in western australia and as some of my lecturers call it, it is the bible for aquaculture students. A must have.

Book Description
A Comprehensive Introduction to Keeping Koi Fish
Their striking patterns and delicate coloration are reason enough for the ever-increasing popularity of these beautiful fish, but they are also fun to keep and can even become quite tame. Koi shows attract an enthusiastic following of competitors and spectators alike, and koi societies are thriving as interest in the hobby grows. And, of course, the whole aspect of water gardeningboth Western and Orientalplays an inherent part in the enjoyment of koi-keeping for a great number of koi enthusiasts.
This book is divided into two important sections. Part One is full of practical koi-keeping information and includes chapters on the history of nishikigoi, koi anatomy, pond and filter construction, water quality and filtration, buying koi, feeding koi, seasonal care, landscaping and water gardens, breeding koi, health care, and showing koi.
Part Two is an extensive survey of the many koi varieties, grouped in their currently recognized Japanese classifications. This section is introduced with an explanation of how the seemingly complex Japanese variety names are built up using words that describe the color, pattern, scalation, and luster of koi. A pictorial review of the 14 different classifications opens a more detailed presentation of photographs, illustrations, and descriptions of all the major, and many rare, varieties, from the eye-catching red-and-white Kohaku to the brilliant, metallic Ogon.
Customer Reviews:
Koi winner.......2007-08-23
Good conprehensive book on koi. Very good photos and description of the various types of koi with their proper Japanese names.
As with most koi books, too much detail on pond building and not enough on maintenance.
Photography is very good with lots of examples of finished ponds.

good high school book - too basic for universitarians.......1997-03-09
Well presented, nice design but too elementary for researchers and people wanting to know a "real introduction" to aquaculture.
Lacks of minimal technical details such as longlines or rafts design.

Book Description
For the whole of the last half-century, most theoretical syntacticians have assumed that knowledge of language is different from the tasks of speaking and understanding. There have been some dissenters, but, by and large, this view still holds sway.
This book takes a different view: it continues the task set in hand by Kempson et al (2001) of arguing that the common-sense intuition is correct that knowledge of language consists in being able to use it in speaking and understanding. The Dynamics of Language argues that interpretation is built up across as sequence of words relative to some context and that this is all that is needed to explain the structural properties of language. The dynamics of how interpretation is built up is the syntax of a language system. The authors' first task is to convey to a general linguistic audience with a minimum of formal apparatus, the substance of that formal system. Secondly, as linguists, they set themselves the task of applying the formal system to as broad an array of linguistic puzzles as possible, the languages analysed ranging from English to Japanese and Swahili.
"This book makes an uncommon achievement in successfully using detailed analyses of typologically diverse languages to address foundational questions about what it means to know a language and about the relation between speaking and understanding. This book will be of interest to anybody who is serious about the cognitive science of syntax and semantics."
Colin Phillips, University of Maryland, USA
"For anyone interested in the basic nature of natural language syntax, this book is a necessary, and enjoyable, read. The authors provide a new take on how interpretations are constructed by language users, and back up their general theoretical proposals with original analyses of an eclectic range of linguistic phenomena. The exposition
is clear and engaging–and challenging. You will have some of your assumptions shaken up; whether they fall back in place, or are radically rearranged, the experience is stimulating."
Caroline Heycock, University of Edinburgh, UK
