Book Description
The proven, objective, standardized, and complete "how to" sequential series of progressive steps to Lean manufacturing implementation illustrated in this manual are easy to understand and use to effect factory transformation to lean without the aid of a consultant. It also provides a toolbox of techniques for problem - solving, continuous improvement, and for operating a Lean manufacturing facility on a day-to-day basis after the initial line design is completed
Customer Reviews:
An effective guide for new line design.......2005-03-30
This book gives a new insight about the PROCESS and shows some ways to optimally design it with minimum wastage. The concepts described here is not just limited to the manufacturing process but extends to any other business process. Consideration of the resources in Man , Machine , Workstation and Inventory sets a well-defined boundary of constraint for designing new production line.
Not only for the new line , few of the concepts of this book can be applied for optimization of the old production lines also.
As a whole this book is a good investment which can be used as guidelines for new line design and improvement of the old line.
From a Lean Manufacturing Engineer.......2004-12-04
This treatment of Lean Manufacturing is written from the American Production and Inventory Control Society (APICS) viewpoint. The center of the manufacturing world for the production control dept. is the MRP software which makes this viewpoint on Lean interesting, especially since two of the major advantages of implementing Lean is to reduce inventories and to eliminate production control department overhead. The only requirements for MRP in a lean environment are long term raw material scheduling and finished product delivery scheduling.
Hobbs does not establish the roots of Lean (The Toyota Production System) nor does he use Japanese lean terms with the exeption of Kanban and Kaizen. Nor does he recognize the existence of the value stream map (VSM) choosing to use the process flow diagram (PFD) to define the manufacturing process. Thus Hobbs only defines process level manufacturing data and totally ignores the systems approach to lean Manufacturing. As a result the Lean Enterprise, total lead time, and how the manufacturing process relates to the whole value stream are not even adddressed. He is, however, quick to use total lead time in his so called 'Strategic Business Analysis'. Finally, the key concept of pull/flow production control is not fully compared to push/MRP production control. Herein lies the proof that pull/flow is superior.
This is the only treatment of lean manufacturing I have found that espouses providing for scrap and rework in the manufacturing process. There is no jidoka even mentioned.
Somehow the term 'MRP' shows up on almost every page. This book should be labeled 'In Defense of MRP'.
There is no bibliography - all original?
1) A lean practitioners publication 2/10
2) A lean managers publicaton 4/10
3) Clear thought/Organization 3/10
4) Information Content 2/10

Lean Secrets.......2004-09-21
It is very unusual when a consultant reveals their secrets to implementation concepts. Dennis Hobbs tells how to implement lean on a step by step basis. The secrets of kanban calculation in addition to line balancing are exposed. This book is a critical resource for companies interested in conducting their own lean implementations. Dennis provides detailed explanations and not just lean stories that fail to get to the real issues of how to implement the concepts.
DON'T BUY THIS BOOK!!.......2004-07-24
So call "LEAN Manufacturing Implementation" title is very appealing. Very bad decision buying this book. I have several other books on the subject. From Mr. Pyzdek to Womack (warranted satisfacton with this guy's book) and some other japanese authors on the subject. I paid $6.00 for the book "The machine that changed the world" I learned more reading this book. This book is highly priced. Shame on APICS backing up this kinda of got-to-write-a-book authors. I hope the author could read this comentary and give me money back. This book is just the product of somebody not enought professional to accept HE CAN'T WRITE A BOOK ON THE SUBJECT. Very repetitive, boring. Anyways...!!!
Excellent How-To Guide.......2004-01-09
I have been looking long and hard for a simple, step-by-step guide to implementing Lean methodologies in my facility and I have finally found it. Most of the Lean books I've seen up to this point discuss high-level concepts, without detailing the steps and tools needed to put the strategy into practice. However, this book (more of a "how-to" manual, really) outlines all the tasks needed to move from a traditional batch manufacturing system to a Lean environment.
It covers everything from project scoping to line design to Kanban materials movement systems. Not only that, the author provides all the tools (formulas, charts, project management tips, etc.) to guide you through the process. He's also provided methods, like the daily resource planning tool, that help you manage the line after the Lean processes are up and running.
I'm using the guide now for my line reconfiguration, and have gotten it for everyone on my implementation team. This book is good for any manufacturer that is planning to implement Lean, but doesn't have a plan for how to go about it.
Highly recommended!

Customer Reviews:
Fantastic Book by Moubray.......2007-05-13
Superb book! a hands on approach for RCM makes it effective and easy to understand & implement RCM strategy.
The best reference for RCM.......2007-01-23
I have been working in the field of RCM since 1991. During that time I have read most of the texts in the marketplace on the subject as well as having worked in a range of countries and industries using a range of different methods.
Johns book is unique in that it is set in the context of asset maintenance as a managerial discipline of growing strategic significance. His vast knowledge, coupled with the vast knowledge and resources of his network of RCM practitioners, have combined to make this the finest text on RCM that has been produced to date.
If you want to get to know a little about RCM, understand how it is applied, and understand some of the techniques and principles that make up this area of expertise, then there is no better book in todays marketplace. I still carry a copy with me today on most jobs I undertake.
Written in laymans terms Johns' book is the most read book on the subject, and remains the standard by which others are measured. Don't waste your time elsewhere.
Helpful source; good start for anyone........2006-01-05
I purchased this book for a course that used it for a reference.
Overall it contains good information and provides understanding towards the concepts of RCM. I have a background in maintenance already and didn't have too hard of a time understanding the content; class helped, too. I noticed that some of the concepts and approaches to RCM were so simple in idea, that they are easily overlooked. It can add to your arsenal of tools that can help you do your job better and more efficiently. Overall the wording is understandable and isn't boring. Basically, I would say this book is suitable for someone in their 2nd-4th year in industrial maintenance desiring to be a planner or maint. manager position.
I enjoyed it because it opened my eyes to new ideas and exposed misconceptions about old RCM tactics that are inefficient.
Not a text, an advertisement.......2003-04-03
...this book is not a great maintenance text.
Rather, it's a sales pitch for a program. The program is fine on its own merit, but the book is not worthy of purchase. All lessons of the book (minus the child-like uptime calculus) can be summarized in the statement:
"If it ain't broke, don't fix it -- and if it's cheap to replace, don't maintain it."
That's the summary.
It's not worth [the money]
The definitive textbook on RCM.......2001-10-03
This book is the definitive textbook on RCM, the result of the accumulated experience of thousands of RCM reviews in nearly every industry and in dozens of countries around the world.
It presents RCM's distinctive "systems" approach to maintenance, offering sophisticated criteria for deciding among four kinds of scheduled tasks (not simply the replacement of individual non-repairable components), and equally sophisticated criteria for deciding among two other kinds of failure management policies (including redesign) if scheduled tasks are not appropriate.
If you wish to do RCM, you need this book plus a mentor to guide your early efforts. (How many of us learned to ride a bicycle without someone holding the handlebars?)
But if you simply wish to understand RCM -- you need this book.

Customer Reviews:
Super Disappointed.......2006-08-10
Although this book has a lot of information, it lacks examples and sample problems which help to provide the design confidence I was looking for in an HVAC text. In my opinion this books only value is as a reference for the experienced HVAC engineer.
Excellent.......2003-04-26
This book is one of the best I have come across....the complete guide for HVAC engineers. I have many HVAC books, but this is the top of the tops...well illustrated formulae, diagramatic illustrations, plus controls schedules...discussed issues and common scenarios pertaining to design. Well done Shan Wang
Excellent!!.......2002-04-22
Very complete handbook. Very good ilustrations and up to date. Good reference for HVAC experienced engineers or for students.
I think this book is useful to me........1999-12-04
I have read about 50 handbooks about air conditioning or HVAC system, among all these books I think this one is easy to understand and I can find almost what I want in this book.

Book Description
Stage Rigging Handbook is written in an at-a-glance outline form, yet contains in-depth information available nowhere else.
This second edition includes two new parts: the first, an expanded discussion of the forces and loads on stage rigging components and the structure supporting them; the second, an examination of block and tackle rigging. The remaining four parts contain numerous revisions.
Explaining his purpose, Jay O. Glerum points out that four main principles constitute the core of this book: know the rigging system; know that it is in safe working order; know how to use it; keep your concentration. Glerum applies these principles to all the major types of stage rigging systems, including block and tackle, hemp, counterweight, and motorized. He describes each type of rigging and then thoroughly reviews the operating procedures and ways of inspecting existing systems.
To provide background, Glerum opens with the basic theory of applied physics as it relates to rigging. Step by step, he explains the calculations required to determine safe working loads for various components. Glerum’s many anecdotes help the reader translate theory into reality.
Glerum then turns to four separate and detailed treatments of the main types of theatrical rigging. His thorough descriptions include drawings that identify each separate component of the rigging. He points out the advantages of each system, detailing everything from the mechanical advantage and the effects of wear on rope to the best ways to tie off the pin rail and to store weights. Because stagecraft often has been handed down orally from one stagehand to the next, incorrect—as well as dangerous—assumptions exist in the trade. Glerum provides a ready reference for everything from how to tie a knot to how to effectively communicate a warning for a runaway set.
Glerum also discusses special problems such as cutting fiber rope, terminating wire rope, attaching drops and framed scenery, using trusses and bridles, dead hanging, tripping, guiding loads, and other topics. He also covers recordkeeping, with tips and pointers on how to establish an inspection log.
Customer Reviews:
Outdated.......2005-08-02
This book must have been the rigging bible...in 1970. There is very little mention of motorized rigging and modern trussing used in the majority of stage, concert and corporate events. I would strongly recommend NOT buying this book unless you're looking for a historical document of how rigging was performed 35 years ago.
A Must Read For High School Techies!.......2002-09-03
Stage Rigging Hand Book is a great book for anyone responsible for rigging. It covers very important topics and safety issues. Working in one of the biggest and best high school theatres in the state of Virginia, I can say that this book is a major help on any rigging job and is an indispensable book when safety is concerned (and when is safety not involved?). If you are a TD at any high school with a rigging system you must have this book.
Nothing Better.......2002-06-24
As an instructor in the Canadian College system, I have found this book best sits within easy reach. I am constantly using it as a teaching tool for my students and myself. I had the priviledge of attending a master class with Jay in 2001 and would recommend it to anyone who has the opportunity. When teamed with Harry Donovan, you will find no better pair to flood your mind with all that is entertainment rigging.
An Amazing Book.......2001-08-19
Jay O. Glerum has written a book filled with history and practical hard-to-find information every theatre tech should have in his/her library. This book is rich with clear illustrations and photos for just about every rigging situation you will encounter. It has chapters on "Loads and Reactions" "Block and Tackle Rigging" "Hemp Rigging" "Motorized Rigging" and much more. There's a very useful chapter on cutting and knotting rope. I was particularly impressed with the sections on "Special Problems" and "Recordkeeping". As today's threatres move more and more toward mechanized scene changes and motorized light rigs, a solid understanding of rigging techniques is more important than ever. Whether you are a novice or have years of experience ... whether you are an independent or on staff, Jay O. Glerum's "Stage Rigging Handbook" will improve your knowledge and give you a wealth of information. I highly recommend this book.
A Must for any Flyrail!.......2000-12-27
As an IATSE stage rigger, I have worked with people like Eddie Blue and Aaron Hutsch, and I have yet to work with a flyman or rigger who doesn't use and own this book. Glerum's methodical approach to everything rigged, from sand bags and tension pulleys to loft blocks and chain bags makes the complicated art and physics involved with theatrical flying and baton loading easy to understand, and in-depth enough for the novice or master rigger. A must have for anyone persuing a theatrical or IATSE position.

Very informative.......2001-12-31
This book is extremely helpful and unlike any other organizational change book out there. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in the topic.
Author's Comments.......2001-08-08
This book addreses a market that has really not been tapped. There are many books out there about change but none that address it from a users perspective. This is a "how to do it" book that helps those of you tasked with the difficult process of change in your company to effectively address the issues and make the change process a success. As I say in Chapter 1, "it does more than start you on the road, it accompanies you on the journey." It is well worth your while to obatin a copy and use it as you go through the process.

Download Description
As many American manufacturers struggle with low-cost foreign competition, John Deere has not only prevailed, but increased its market share by delivering superior quality products built with time-tested values. For 150 years, these values have guided John Deere from a small tractor and farm equipment manufacturer to a famous American brand with social cache and a diverse array of products.
The John Deere Way shares the management principles and values that have made John Deere one of the most respected and successful brands in America, including the ten core secrets every business leader should take to heart:
- I will not put my name on a product that does not have in it the best that is in me.
- If we don't improve our products, others will make them in our place.
- Always maintain integrity.
- Concentrate on areas where you have a clear competitive advantage.
- It is more important in business to listen than to lead.
- It is more valuable to link than to leverage.
- It is better to be lean than laden.
- In a rigorously competitive market, virtue is necessary for sustained value creation.
- It is important to build a business as great as your products.

Learning Why a Legendary Company is Legendary.......2006-01-18
I'll admit it, I grew up on and around John Deere equipment. As an adult I have become a collector of antique tractors and become a student of this truly historic and great American company. John Deere is also a Client of ours.
So when I received this book as a birthday gift it was a slam dunk - it went near the top of my reading stack. Given all of that, this review doesn't come from my obviously biased point of view - this is a book worth reading.
The book does tell parts of the history of this company, but it isn't a book about products or history. Written by experienced business author David Magee, it is an exploration of the key factors that have led to John Deere to growing and thriving over the last 150+ years.
The chapter titles tip off the business practices and attitudes that have guided the company and serve as the thesis for the book. Selected titles include:
Embrace the Culture
Quality Comes First
Always Maintain Integrity
Build a Business as Great as Your Products
Grow on the Strength of Your Roots
If you are interested in looking for keys that lead companies to be successful over the long haul, you will find some in this book. Written in a very readable style and interspersed with anecdotes and stories from Customers, Senior Managers and 4th generation employees, it deserves to be on your reading list.
Besides, how can any book go wrong when its dedication readsit is dedicated "For the Farmer"?
A Deere Corporate Bio.......2006-01-09
This sincerely earnest book is a good example of why corporate biography remains, perhaps, the most problematic business-book genre. While the book is well researched, author David Magee apparently found it hard to avoid the trap of laudatory language about current management. To write a book like this, you need corporate help and access. Most employees won't even talk to an author without a go-ahead from the top. This means that, even without Deere & Company's roots date to 1836, when a blacksmith named John Deere moved from Vermont to the frontier settlement of Grand Detour, Illinois. Deere set up a shop that could provide stout hayforks, horseshoes and wagon parts. He talked with farmers, who complained that it was very difficult to plow the dense Midwestern turf. Plows made in the Northeast didn't work in the rich heavy soil. In 1837, Deere decided to devise a plow that would scrape off the topsoil, turn it over and let it glide off the plow. Even without an explicit quid pro quo, corporate biographies tend to become trapped in a sort of literary Stockholm syndrome, dependent on their sources for their own survival. That cautionary flag raised, this book provides a worthwhile portrait of one of America's stalwart agricultural companies. Deere & Company's values are as plain and honest as the face of a farmer atop his Deere tractor. Although the book would have been more engrossing if it offered pictures and sharper anecdotes, particularly from times when things didn't go well, we recommend it to those interested in agriculture, corporate histories or values-driven management.
Jeremy Dahlstrom.......2005-08-27
In this book David does a great job of showing just how the corporate culture at Deere & Company has developed over time while continuing to rely upon a basic set of core values that began with the company's founder and namesake and have been carried forth since. He traces how the company has continued to stay true to it's roots while struggling to compete in a continuously changing business and agricultural environment.
Great Primer on the Company.......2005-08-11
The John Deere Way is an excellent way to learn about the basics of what make John Deere a legendary organization. From the history to the operational strategies and values, it covers all of the important information needed to understand Deere. It would have been nice, however, if the book was a little less repetitive at times and did not contain glaring vernacular errors such as "you can take the country out of the boy but you can't take the boy out of the country". But overall, an excellent primer on Deere & Co.
