4 out of 5 stars Eye Opening.......2007-05-14

As usual, Jean Sasson opened my eyes to a harsh culture where survival is your minute by minute goal. She has provided women with a voice and others of us a reason to be thankful to be Americans.

4 out of 5 stars Engaging.......2007-05-12

I love all of Jean Sasson's books. Like all the others, this is written to keep you interested in the story and wondering what could possibly happen next to this poor young woman, her husband and all Kurds, even though you eventually know about the general outcome. The fact that the story is true, makes it hair raising. The only unfavorable thing I could say about the book, is that in telling the story, Jean Sasson looses herself a bit by going into too many details of places, people, every day occurrances, and the constant back and forth conversations between the protagonists. Sometimes it is best to leave details to your imagination. Other than that, I enjoyed it thoroughly and can't wait for the next!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2007-05-31

This book is very helpful if you are going through the interview process and have not done so in a while. Very insightful and real world.

5 out of 5 stars Money well spent !!!.......2006-06-16

This book was definitely money well spent. I have interviewed and accepted jobs previously in my career (10yrs in my profession), but have never been as prepared as I was after reading this book. I used it from the start of the job hunt process to accepting the best overall offer. Reading the book helped ease pre-interview anxiety, and also helped me prepare for interviews by providing a good idea of what to expect, how to prepare, and how to answer difficult questions, etc. The sections I found most helpful were on generating multiple offers, and negotiating after the initial offer. I used Dr Powers advice on both, and was able to generate multiple offers and negotiate significantly higher salary and vacation time. Well worth the money and I would recommend this book to anyone currently on the job hunt.

5 out of 5 stars Eliminate "the fever," ace the interview & get the job.......2006-01-30

I've been on both sides of the job interview process: as someone doing the hiring and also as a candidate for a job. It is amazing how being on the job hunt alters your view of the interview process. Did I develop some kind of "interview fever" which made me overly nervous and forget what it was like to hire someone? Maybe. But reading Winning Job Interviews allowed me to step back and put it all back into proper perspective so I could ace the interview and get the job. How cool is that?

5 out of 5 stars Must Read prior to going to any interview.......2005-06-14

Clear, direct, concise.

The first 40 pages will tell you what you really know: how you feel. And how to deal with it. With an upbeat language helps you decrease your anxiety and depression. And further, MOTIVATE you.

Then clear clues on how to behave, conduct, and win interviews.

I wish he could avoid some areas of job searching and closing to have more material on the topic.

But IT IS A MUST READ.

5 out of 5 stars A "Must-Read!" for all GI's getting out of the service........2005-05-31

I'm getting ready to retire from a successful military career. To be honest, before reading Dr. Power's book-the thought of joining the rat-race of the whole job interview process was more formidable than facing another deployment to the desert! At 40 years old I haven't had to go on a job interview in over 20 years! This book was not only fun to read, but offered great tips, warned against common pit falls (I was sure to fall into) and helped me plan out my strategy to attain my future career. It's hard to imagine, but after reading this candid, well-written book I feel not only self-confident but actually excited about my upcoming interviews!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars This book is RIGHT. I'm sure it works. .......2007-01-03

I bought this book, determined to follow the advice and get my own husband. As I read it though, I realized that I didn't want a husband bad enough to do the simple, normal things required to get one. I follow the recipe for staying single, almost to the letter. That's why I have been single from the time I was 18 until now and I am 53, almost 54. You get that book and then after you read it, either do what it says to do and get married, or keep on doing what you're doing now and quit griping cause you're single - just like I had to.

An old ex friend of mine followed the advice without fail. She was married within one year. Two years later, they're still sparkling with pleasure in their relationship. :))

I am AMAZED at the negative feedback. They're shooting the messenger because they don't like the message. Their feedback tells a lot more about them, than it does about the book.

4 out of 5 stars Good Book.......2006-11-30

I thought this book was really good. It puts a lot into perspective for single women in their late 20's and early 30's who truly want to get married. I do NOT think this book is for the ones who want to RE-marry. I'm sure finding "another" husband is a little different the second time around because you're divorced, not "never married." The book helped me identify a string of men who I have dated in the past and helped me to understand the stringers, etc. I think the stages of a relationship is very important as well. It provides a blue print for relationships. I do believe that women who have a nice appearance and are attractive do have better luck because they have a wider pool of potentials. I also believe that you have to be committed to the idea and really put yourself in a place to meet eligible men. I also think this book provides reasons that most men do not reveal. As in "why didn't they call?" Most women wonder why and begin calling the guy and making fools of themselves as opposed to chalking it up as "you didn't live up to his expectations." And there's nothing wrong with that because women do it all of the time. It's about reaching mutual expectations.

I'm 31, successful, highly educated, beautiful (or so I'm constantly told) and have finally decided and committed to the idea that I want to get married. Based on the books advice, I have identified some potentials and discarded the rest (the ones I would have normally kept) and I will let you know how it goes.

3 out of 5 stars Statistically Speaking.......2006-09-25

John Malloy teaches women how to find the right man using valid stats and information. A very good tool, not that much fun to read, however.

2 out of 5 stars Catering to the Man?.......2006-07-28

I found this book a bit old-fashioned. I just turned 40, was married once, and have been in the dating scene for 5 yrs now-- still single with no long-term (more than a year) dating companion. However I'm discouraged that if one of the only ways a single over 40 woman has a chance of finding a mate is being THIN, then I probably dont want to get married ANYWAY. (I'm still attractive, but on the plumper side- 5'10, 219) I want to find a book, instead that focuses on how to help "older" women find love by loving themselves and focusing on their INNER beauty. Look at all those gorgeous BBW's and BBW dating sites out there. The movement is growing because so many more Americans are having problems. There are men who will love you for who you are-- if not, then someone needs to work on re-socializing them in the early stages to assure better partnerships for everyone in the future. Sorry, but after 40, we women start to fade a bit...its GREAT to stay as healthy as possible, but this book is unrealstic.

4 out of 5 stars Read it, understand it and then judge it.......2006-06-08

It seems nobody has reviewed this book for a couple of years with a basic understanding of what it's about.

It's a guide to help get a man to marry you. It's based on research of the "market research" variety, which is good enough for selling Coke and Ford and should work for selling relationships (which most people want more than they want a car - most people seem to want cars to get a relationship). It's written in an informative but light-hearted way.

A lot of people in these reviews don't like the book (some who've only read a few pages). My contributions to the war:

Firstly, the book is for women who want to get married - if you don't want to get married (or at least not any time in the next 5 years) don't read it.

Second - it's qualitative research. That means you don't need big numbers you just need the right people - and he has both the right people and the numbers.

Third - weight takes up less than 1 of the 200 pages. Another is dedicated to why 20% of never-married women in their 40s would do it the same all over again. There's actually more space spent on how to maximise your chances with good-looking men than there is on weight. And that doesn't include looking good yourself.

Is the advice obvious? Well, a lot of it is straightforward. But some isn't. The reviewer who said they needed to be 26 before getting married missed the point - the majority of men need to be that age (or older if they've been to college) before they seriously think about marriage. Do their spouses? No - so if you're a 20-year-old-woman planning on finding a spouse not a boyfriend, check out the 25+ crew.

And to those good-looking women who thought the book had nothing to say to them - please read the other 199 pages. To the plump, sassy crowd - please read the other 199 pages. The biggest drawcard isn't looks.

In summary - it's good advice with sound research behind it. It's not for everyone 'cause not everyone wants to get married in the near future. But if that's you, you probably couldn't do better than this as a guide to hooking him.

Book Description

Tired of hearing (and believing) the lies that the media and your own sister friends keep feeding you: that good black love is an impossibility, that all the best men are either married, gay, or sell out on their own kind? If so, it’s time to get stripped. Welcome to the best and most practical relationship advice you’ll ever receive. . . .

Host of “The Love Zone,” Baltimore’s #1 urban radio relationship show, LaDawn Black has made it her mission to enlighten her African American sisters on finding and keeping quality black men. Stripped Bare is the blueprint of that mission: a relationship guide that, unlike any other, asks you–a smart, modern woman– to take inventory of your own life in order to land the man of your dreams.

Leave the blame and the baggage behind. This take-charge manifesto shows you how to be the kind of person who’ll attract the men that you deserve. With these twelve proven truths that LaDawn and her own friends have put to the test, you’ll challenge self-defeating ways of thinking and living and position yourself for enduring love. From letting go of the past and gaining a sense of fun to living for you and breaking the girlfriend chain (those negative friends who keep you and your expectations low), Stripped Bare lays out the tools you’ll need–and the directions for how to use them to your greatest romantic advantage.

Filled with personal anecdotes that illustrate each truth, this wise, amusing, and candid guide will help you break the cycle of dead-end relationships (hint: it’s a whole lot easier than you realized) and embrace that sexy, loving guy who’s always been within your reach.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Looking at Self.......2007-04-07

I am not a big fan of Relationship help books. They tend to pacify the readers, and are very predictable. This book written by Ms.Black offers a different spin on relationships advice, it points out how we must possess the same qualities that we are requiring in a mate. It has precise points, and a mechanism for positive and eteneral change for women's attitudes and attributes.

5 out of 5 stars Keeping it real.......2007-01-28

Ms. Black writes in a forthright, down-to-earth manner. It is refreshing to read a book that gets to the point without "educational" pontification which makes one decipher what is being discussed.

Women, we have issues. Women, we can deal with them armed with the stuff of publications like this.

5 out of 5 stars Simply put.......2007-01-23

I love how simple and easy this book is to read and comprehend. I've bought several copies for a few of my girlfriends. LaDawn breaks down these truths to the simplest forms and debunks the myths that society and the media has gotten women to buy into. I deifinitely look forward to reading her others books.

5 out of 5 stars The Naked Truth.......2006-11-09

In this little black book, LaDawn enlightens African American sisters on finding a quality black man and keeping him. It is a realistic relationship guide that teaches the reader how to be the kind of person who will attract the man that you deserve. It is full of personal anecdotes and scenarios from a variety of sisters that will make you laugh, but these stories are oh so real! In this handy little "up-in-your-face," "sister-girl" book, you will learn how to let go of the past and stop dating unavailable men, as well as learn to date outside the box and make your relationship a top priority. This book does teach you how to land the very best black man--for you!

5 out of 5 stars **** The Ultimate Love Guide ****.......2006-11-03

I love this book! I bought copies for each of my girlfriends. Black gives women concrete tools for taking control of their love lives. Her message isn't superficial (hair, make-up, sex)-- it focuses on being the best you in order to get the best out of love. She stopped me from my negative thinking when it comes to brothers and really taught me that good love is out there and I need to cast a wider and more informed net.

I tripped up on this book because it was referenced in a magazine article and this little book changed my view on love. It is a must read for all women married and single looking to get the most out of their relationships.

My sister in law read the Brave Land, Brave Love and said it was really a great book .She gave it to me to read and I noticed it was the last book of 3. I went to the library to get the other 2 books before it. I read all 3 in 1 week. Couldn`t put them down. Mrs. Mason is a very good writer. I`m hooked and plan on reading her other books. Keep up the good work.

Book Description

Now available in paperback, the New York Times -bestseller hen John F. Kennedy called America 'the land we love' more than 44 years ago, he was reminding us of the lofty ideals on which our country was founded. But what are those ideals, and how have Americans defined them? Is America the land of George Washington and Franklin Delano Roosevelt, who rallied the country's spirits for unity in wartime, or is it a land of dissent, a land in which Frederick Douglass, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, and Martin Luther King, Jr., remind us of our duty to protect our most fundamental freedoms? Are we defined by the speeches of Thomas Jefferson and Ronald Reagan or by the humor of H.L. Mencken and Mark Twain?

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Patriotism, not mindlessness.......2007-04-21

A Patriot's Handbook celebrates many of the finest moments in American history. Contrary to what a few reviewers have said, however, this is not a mere collection of flag-waving sound-bites. I honestly wonder if they read the same book I did. The version I had contained portions from The Jungle, talking about the unfairness of certain economic systems in place at the time. The version I had contained biting and accurate commentary directed at american racism. Yes, there is (justifiable) pride in some of our most prized cultural notions, from the Statue of Liberty to the seperation of church and state. Never, however, believe that A Patriot's Handbook is all flag-waving. Critical self-examination is also called for by the carefully selected passages, recalling the notion that, at times, dissent is patriotic. The book celebrates what is great in our culture, but does not hesitate to remind us that we are not now, nor have we ever been, perfect. In so doing, it points the way towards perfecting ourselves. An excellent job.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book!.......2007-01-11

This book is an amazing compilation of those things most precious to our heritage. It's so wonderful to get a cup of coffee and sit down and read one passage, or chapter, at a time.....and that being something as wonderful and unique as "Casey at the Bat" or one of John Kennedy's speeches. I gave these as gifts to the partners in our firm and heard overwhelming praise for the book.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful history reference.......2006-11-05

When I went looking for a book that had all the famous speeches and quotes throughout history, I had a lot of trouble. Then I found this book. It has everything. Plus it also has background information about each speech or literary piece. I love how it also quotes songs, literature and even movies. We use this book all the time. My son loved reading the transcript from when the first men walked on the moon!! I highly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars Her Mother Would Be Pleased!.......2005-12-06

This anthology of pictures, songs, stories, and poetry contains a world of American History spoken and unspoken. Her mother would be pleased. Carrol Wolverton, author, Back Bay Boston Basement

5 out of 5 stars An American Treasure.......2005-07-19

This is a great family book for all Americans. Caroline Kennedy captures, in more than 600 pages, the true spirit of our country since the beginning. Her research and skill as a writer is amazing. Her selections of speeches, songs, poems, true stories of patriots past and present are perfect for all ages and for both casual and serious readers.

I highly recommend this book - you will refer to it time and time again - as a gift book, it will be well received. The author refers to her book as a collage of America. There are many wonderful pictures, inspiring passages, and the outstanding song and poem collections about our country are just perfect!

A resource book especially for American citizens that is easy to read, written by a well loved young American patriot is truly a treasure. I love it! Thanks, Caroline.

During World War II, young English women left the cozy world of traditional female jobs for exhausting agricultural labor so that male farm workers could take up arms. Agatha, Stella, and Prue are from distinctly different backgrounds and social classes, but genuine patriotism for their country binds them together. Pushed beyond their imagined limits, they all achieve what their culture has denied them as women: adventure, physical challenge, and personal growth. As ordinary citizens fighting for their country the best way they can, they transform themselves into women of honor, courage, and stature, proving themselves more noble than the highest generals.

Book Description

In rural World War II England, three very different young women from very different backgrounds find themselves thrown together, sharing an attic bedroom and laying the foundations for a friendship that would last a lifetime. Land Girls is the intelligent and often heartbreaking account of their first summer together. With wit and charm, Angela Huth has created a novel of delicate passions, richly observed.

3 out of 5 stars So much potential.......2006-11-20

I enjoyed this somewhat simplistic novel, but wish it had dealt a little bit more with the war. If anything, the war merely provided a backdrop for this gentle drama, which came dangerously close to becoming a romance several times, what with all the romantic entanglements in which the young women found themselves involved.

Huth's novel is peopled with endearing and memorable characters, but the actual plot left me hungry for something more. Greater depth? Richer detail? A more complicated dilemma? I think I expected to learn more about the Second World War and its effects on the rural communities in England; what I came away was more of a gentle beach read, if you will. Not exactly "fluff" but definitely not "literary" quality.

1 out of 5 stars Absolute garbage - characters are not human - there is no true love or true friendship here.......2005-09-17

Please don't read this book even if you are a sixteen-year boy with fantasies of having a great time in the barn with three young women (not all at the same time). These are not real women, they are so shallow as to be paper thin.

The men are no better, there just isn't space in a review to list all the faults of this novel. This novel is a "romance" novel with no redeeming features.

I cannot describe how offended I am to see Jane Austen's name on the cover of this book in the quote "There is a very strong case for Huth replacing Jane Austen on the school syllabus." That is an outrage! It succeeded in fooling me into reading the novel, but take my warning and stay away.

This novel is drivel. I recommend instead an excellent book by Balzac called "Cousin Bette." It is full of three-dimensional women striving to get through life and get what they want from the men in their lives. It is so much more relevant to the modern reader than Land Girls.

5 out of 5 stars Liked It.......2004-09-04

I liked this book. It was very well written, thoughtful, had strong character development.

5 out of 5 stars Land Girls.......2003-04-10

In this 20th Century based novel, ýLand Girlsý by Angela Huth, the author takes three girls through a life changing experience. Huth takes wealthy city girls Aga, Prue, and Stella to live on a farm. On this farm, these girls have to perform jobs that men would do if they were not at war. WWII is going on and it will take a while for these girls to get adjusted. ýThis place was horribly old-fashioned, Gloomy, dingy.ý(p.10) Everything was terribly different from home, but even though these girls came from different backgrounds, they help each other survive. They are bound to become friends for life. These young girls will encounter love, honor, friendship, and courage through the adventures in this novel.
Angela Huth wrote a great novel in which she is able to put war together with love and friendship. I think that it is a great talent to be able to put all these concepts together in one book. I also like the way the characters were chosen because they are very different, which means that the reader will have fun reading about the different issues these characters will encounter. The change in life styles for these girls is also a big deal that makes the story more interesting because we will see how the girls change from their peaceful lives at home to this farm. All the girls encounter love with a certain boy, which is also interesting because we see how love acts on different people. The best thing in this book is the way the author takes all these characters, which are strangers to each other and take them through many adventures that, will make them become friends for life.
This novel could be recommended to both men and women. To women because the novel is all about how women are able to do as much as men when it comes to hard work. With this novel, women will get the encouragement that we can do man jobs and that we are as good or even better than they are when it comes to inner strength. Because the women in this novel have plenty of inner strength for joining the Womenýs Land Army and working for men. Men should read this novel so they can learn to appreciate women. With this novel men will see that women are very hard working who will do many things for them. Men will realize that women are not useless and that they can carry on with or without men. I would not recommend this novel to younger, immature people because it contains some sexuality. ýGet your knickers off as fast as you can is my belief, before the poor buggers are shot down. Bit of quick fun, then off to the next one.ý(p.180) Overall this novel is very interesting and adventurous; reading it was a very exciting experience.

2 out of 5 stars Well written, but too shallow.......2003-01-04

The descriptions of farm work in this book were clear and entertaining. I am assuming they are accurate, although I have no way of knowing. English countryside descriptions reminded me of Thomas Hardy, which is a compliment to the author.

However, the plot and characters were stereotypes. The long-suffering wife, the over-sexed lower class girl, the unattractive scholarly girl and the lovelorn dreamy girl, not to mention the hardworking farmer and his brooding, handsome son, are all the stuff of romance novels. I never felt close to the girls, believed in their friendship or really cared what happened to them. I got really tired of and repelled by the over-sexed girl's exploits, and the others' whining.

So why did I finish the book? Well, I bought it instead of taking it out of the library, my usual book venue. There was some tension about which girl would get her man. But the ending!! Who could believe that? Ridiculous.

Book Description

Angel Rogers is alone in the world. With both her mother and father gone, the fiery young woman is left to run Rogers Ranch on her own. Not an easy taks for anyone in 1894, especially in the midst of a drought that has nearby ranchers desperate for the water on her land. So it is that rancher Jeremy Johnson comes to call upon Angel, hoping to strike a bargain that will allow his cattle to graze on the fertile Rogers land and drink from its sparkling waters. Instead, he finds himself increasingly drawn to Angel, and finds he wants he love more than anything else. But to what lengths are other ranchers willing to go in order to gain access to Rogers Creek? And what is Angel willing to sacrifice to keep her ranch from falling into the wrong hands? Ginny Aiken's growing readership will enjoy Spring of My Love as much as they loved the first two installments of the Silver HIlls Trilogy.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent story, nicely written.......2006-12-10

My one nit with the book is that if I read "right" or "sugar" one more time I'm gonna get violent:-) Other than that, the dialogue's great, the characters are realistic, charming or stubborn as they may be.
The story's nicely paced, things actually happen, not just a they meet and fall in love sort of deal...far from it actually.

Aiken's got a nice style and knows how to create distinctive voices for her characters. I wouldn't say this is my fav of the series, but I liked each of the 3 books in their own way. They're well worth owning and reading.

5 out of 5 stars #3 of Silverhills Trilogy was my favorite!.......2006-02-05

Angel, 18, has been left a large spread at the death of her father. Her "crop" is sheep instead of the more popular cattle in this part of Colorado. She also has the ONLY source of water and a drought has been bad for the area. Therefore, many ranchers are just itching to get her land with its' water.

Angel intends to honor her dad by carrying on, by herself, what he built and was his pride and joy. Most men did not see her as capable though, and started making her offers of various sorts. She refused them all and stood her ground, earning the reputation as being more stubborn than a mule and a wild, mad mountain woman.

It is only after Angel is severly injured does she accept even the slightest amount of help from her neighbor, Jeremy. She resents the intrusion into her private life, but she is unable to carry out her obligations without Jeremy.

This book takes place and overlaps characters with the first two of the trilogy which makes for very interesting glimpses into the lives of characters we met earlier. April has made friends with 4-5 of the hard working women in town and enemies of most of the men.

Some very heavy chapters will leave the reader unable to put the book down for fear we will lose our dear Angel to the angry, greedy men who are losing all they own. I think this is the best of the three books and a very tender love story along with being very deep and distressing at times.

    Book Description

Love of the Land: Essential Farm and Conservation Readings from an American Golden Age, 1880-1920 features an unprecedented collection of historical, interdisciplinary essays that reconstruct for the contemporary reader the dynamic dialogue between agriculturist and ecologist. Reflecting the contemporary convergence of agricultural and environmental histories into a larger, land-centered narrative, the highly readable essays in this nearly five-hundred-page anthology present the pioneering words of the academics and agriculturalists, capitalists and conservationists, ecologists and environmentalists, and policymakers and politicos who labored to bring the disparate fields of conservation and agriculture into organic whole. Love of the Land offers a comprehensive, groundbreaking treatment of ecological themes ideal for students and researchers of agricultural and environmental thought. "Zachary Jack's Love of the Land fills a need. It provides a wide-angle view of early U.S. agricultural and conservation thought, which were major influences on both the economy and ethic of this developing country. Especially impressive are the encompassing array of writers - farm, conservation, political, and literary figures; the selected excerpts - each with a message that resounds; and finally the book's preface - worth reading again after finishing the book's last page." Duane Acker, former Assistant Secretary for science and education, U.S. Department of Agriculture and President Emeritus, Kansas State University "This anthology ambitiously takes you on a mind-stretching adventure into our national past, and our future. It offers, actually, an interdisciplinary short course - a compact curriculum - about the dynamics and varied dimensions of rural development and conservation in America... You may appreciate knowing from the start that you have not been dumped on your own into a loose collection of readings. You realize you are led by a compiler who cares and knows much about this subject, ranged widely and thoughtfully in choosing the readings, adds much to them and is leading you helpfully through them." James F. Evans, Professor Emeritus, Agricultural Communications and Journalism, University of Illinois

I don't know how this happened

One day I'm snug in my loner existence at Carnegie Mansion School, and the next I'm tramping through the Scottish wilderness looking for my dad. Who's been kidnapped. Because of a feud that started in medieval times. Or something. Suffice it to say, I never paid too much attention because I thought the whole thing was some twisted figment of my dad's imagination.

Now my only company is a wannabe cop who just might be my superhero dream girl. And if I don't deliver some piece of mysterious "proof" to the kidnappers, my dad is toast. I've got my fair share of issues with my dad, but I don't really want to see him burned to a crisp.

    Anyway, you in?

This is not the first time I've been wrong about something.

    4 out of 5 stars Unexpectedly Amusing.......2007-06-14

Drawing a Blank by Daniel Ehrenhaft is a surprisingly enjoyable read. The main character, Carlton Dunne the IV, is an introverted graphic artist. Carlton has drawn forever as a way to escape the world around him. His eccentric father, Carlton Dunne the III, is obsessed with a legendary family fued that dates back to 13th century Scotland. This fast-paced read combines all the elements of a good book. The intriguing mystery surrounding his father's kidnapping, the fictional fued whose proof of existance appears in unexpected places, and Carlton's psychotic but fun partner makes this book all that more delightful. The comics dispersed throughout this book add more pleasure and wit to this novel than the text alone. The humor, intrigue, and charm of this novel will enchant readers from the first page to the final picture, anyone will enjoy Drawing a Blank.

4 out of 5 stars it has cartoons!.......2007-05-27

This book has a lot going for it. The story (as the full title explains) follows Carlton Dunne IV as he tries to rescue his father who is embroiled in an age-old family feud with another Scottish clan. In the process, Carlton runs away from his boarding school, visits the comic con from hell, meets a crazy girl who wants to be on "Cops" and continues working on his comic strip that runs in a local paper. As you might have guessed, Carlton wears many hats.

The story is exciting and includes comic strips between chapters throughout the novel. Carlton is also a really fun character, likeably neurotic he brings to mind the protagonist of the Wessex Papers--a trilogy that Ehrenhaft wrote under the pen name of Daniel Parker.

Although the book is a significant length, the chapters are short--averaging about three pages at a run. This is good because you can read them quickly. On the other hand, Ehrenhaft's preference to end chapters on a cliff hanger becomes redundant after the eightieth time.

The story takes a while to get to the action, a fact Carlton himself acknowledges early on, but the time is well-spent introducing memorable characters and explaining Carlton's personal history.

A definite must read for any comic fans :)

4 out of 5 stars An ok beggining to a real good book.......2007-04-12

Drawing a Blank was about how this young, cartoon aritist goes on this journey to Scotland because his father was kidnapped. Hid Dad's family has gone way back with this rival clan about how their two families fought for Agricola's Dagger. Carlton also met the love of his life throughout his journey.

My favorite part of the book was when Carlton went to Comic Expo in place of his father. Carlton wrote comics for this newspaper and said that his Dad made them. Carlton's Dad had no clue about writing comics and his boss invited him to Comic Expo. Carlotn went in his place and saw some very interesting people. I think it was funny because his Dad had no clue about Carlton's job writing comics. Overall that was my favorite part in the book.

I deffinetly recommend this book. I thought this book was really good. The beginning of it wasn't that good but the end was awesome. The beginning was kind of boring but the end sure wasn't. This book showed me that nothing is impossible. Carlton Solved a Mystery, Ended a Feud, and Landed the Girl of his Dreams all in one adventure. He wasn't even one of the popular kids, he was just a kid at a private school that sat in his dorm and created comics. I recommend this book to anyone who likes a funny book with a great storyline and message.

5 out of 5 stars Courtesy of Teens Read Too.......2006-11-02

How does one describe Carlton Dunne IV? Here's how I think he would describe himself:

    *Comic book geek
    *Trust fund kid
    *Loner
*Incapable of being attentive or focused
    *Afraid of people
    *VERY afraid of female people
    *Non-adventurous
    *Off-spring of a nutcase

Unfortunately, his dad might not be crazy. Carlton's grown up hearing about some ridiculous, centuries-old feud with some guy in Scotland. He's always just assumed it was his father's insanity, but now his dad is missing, and Carlton's getting really weird phone calls. So, the guy who's scared of people is about to be forced to deal with a whole bunch of them that he's never met before. One of those people might be a dangerous lunatic who is holding his father hostage, one of them is definitely the prettiest girl Carlton's ever seen, and he's also about to have the adventure of a lifetime.

Let me start by confessing I'm not a comic book fan. When I opened the book and I saw a comic strip, I groaned out loud. See, one of Carlton's quirks, of which there are quite a few, is that he draws comic strips when he's unhappy or uncomfortable. He kind of re-draws his circumstances. But I made myself sit down and start reading. Carlton also makes random comments in footnote form. I like random comments, and that's what I always thought footnotes should be used for anyway, so the book started to grow on me. A lot of the footnotes actually contain useful and interesting information, as well. He also continuously gives birth and death dates, which I didn't quite get, but still found amusing. I really started to like Carlton, and his book. By the end I had laughed out loud, in public no less, quite a few times. And I'm not saying I'm ready to go to ComicCon or anything, but I have a newfound appreciation for comics.

Subtitled: Drawing a Blank: Or How I tried to Solve a Mystery, End a
Feud, and Land the Girl of My Dreams

Told through the eyes of 17-year-old Carleton Duane (the IV), the story takes us from a boarding school in upstate Connecticut, to New York City, to Scotland.

Carleton is a rather reserved teen who has been sent to a ritzy boarding school. He is artistic and spends time in class doodling and drawing his comics (which are printed in the local paper under his father's name--whom the editor to believes he is).

Carleton's life is thrown into chaos when he receives a late night phone call from Scotland telling him that his father has been kidnapped, and the only way to free him is to bring the "proof" of this age-old feud between two Scottish clans. The problem: Carleton believes his father was nuts, that the feud was made up. He has no idea what the "proof" required is. What follows is a wacky tale of Carleton's travels to try and rescue his father.

Carleton sneaks out of school to go home to New York City, usetting off a panic about his disappearance. His apartment was ransacked by someone else looking for the "proof" his mysterious caller had mentioned. A very strange last will and testament written by his father years earlier (which refers to the feud but does not explain it at all) was in his father's desk drawer usually kept locked. He flies to Scotland, and is almost run over by a van. A girl, who might not be what or whom she seems to be, rescues him.

Author Daniel Ehrenhaft and artist Trevor Ristow have collaborated to make an intently humorous story. Ehrenhaft's delightful tale is punctuated with Ristow's drawings that illustrate how Carleton looses himself in his drawing and uses his comics to explore his emotions at the time of drawing. While not a graphic novel, but fiction with inserted illustrated comic pages scattered throughout the book, it might also interest fans of the graphic novel genre.

Armchair Interviews says: Readers will have a fun time reading about Carleton's travels; finding out how he manages to solve the kidnapping mystery; end a feud that has lasted generations; and find the time to meet the girl of his
    dreams.
