Book Description
The biggest enemy of any garden is not a pest, disease, or poison—it’s any plant with tougher survival skills than the plants it competes with. The best way to weed out the invaders is with this fiendishly clever guide to native plants that can seek and destroy the top 100 most unwelcome perennials, grasses, vines, shrubs, and trees. While replacing the invaders, the beautiful, hardy native plants described here also attract native birds and butterflies, while turning away their own enemy invaders. Word-and-picture guides provide tips on care and maintenance, while helpful “at a glance” boxes depict shapes, sizes, best locations, and most attractive features of each native alternative.

One to buy.......2007-07-17
I typically take books like this out of the local library when I need them, but I've bought this one, because of a combination of factors: low price, great readability, good pictures, good comprehensive overview of the plants. It is not really useful to me in quite the way the authors might have intended, that is, "Don't buy plant X, buy plants Y or Z or W instead..." One's likes/dislikes for plants can be so finessed, that I don't think anyone else could choose substitutes like that for what I might like.
Rather, I just use it to read about the native plants (which is 98% of the book anyway -- it gives very little or no description of the "bad invasive" plants, doesn't explain why or how they're invasive... you must take on faith that those plants are bad.) The book is primarily an inexpensive, well-written description of native plants you should like to use, rather than describing invasives. Very, very good descriptions of the plants, from authors who not only know the plants well, but can pick out the very specific things about each plant that a gardener will like to know when cultivating them. E.g. "can't tolerate extreme heat" or "goes dormant if no moisture" or "has a long taproot so once established shouldn't be moved" -- these are the specifics about plants you've really got to know, and this book seems to tell me much more of those details than others like it.
It's another of many great books from the Brooklyn Botanic Garden.
Incidently, it's not just for east coasters... seems to cover the entire country and all zones fairly well.
Great Book.......2006-10-31
This book is kind of like two books in one - it provides the Federal List of Invasive Garden Plants by plant name and state, then takes some of those plants and gives good native alternatives for them.
The natives are good selections and come with photos, descriptions and growing tips. Usually several native options are offered for each invasive.
Aside from being a good resource for identifying invasive plants, it's great to have an easy way to find better plant options.
This book is a bargain at $9.95, even if Amazon isn't discounting the price. And it's a nice way to help support the Brooklyn Botanic Garden.
Book Description
Invasive Plants of the Upper Midwest is an informative, colorful, comprehensive guide to invasive species that are currently endangering native habitats in the region. It will be an essential resource for land managers, nature lovers, property owners, farmers, landscapers, educators, botanists, foresters, and gardeners.
Invasive plants are a growing threat to ecosystems everywhere. Often originating in distant climes, they spread to woodlands, wetlands, prairies, roadsides, and backyards that lack the biological controls which kept these plant populations in check in their homelands.
Invasive Plants of the Upper Midwest includes more than 250 color photos that will help anyone identify problem trees, shrubs, vines, grasses, sedges, and herbaceous plants (including aquatic invaders). The text offers further details of plant identification; manual, mechanical, biological, and chemical control techniques; information and advice about herbicides; and suggestions for related ecological restoration and community education efforts. Also included are literature references, a glossary, a matrix of existing and potential invasive species in the Upper Midwest, an index with both scientific and common plant names, advice on state agencies to contact with invasive plant questions, and other helpful resources.
The information in this book has been carefully reviewed by staffs of the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources Bureau of Endangered Resources and the University of Wisconsin-Madison Arboretum and other invasive plant experts.

Tremendous Resource with a Story.......2006-05-22
We have been invaded and we are losing the war. Know thine enemy: Garlic mustard, buckthorn, reed canary grass, and honeysuckle. Read this book and you will know the major invasives, the lesser invasives, and how to attack them. Many color photos help with species identification. The cover photo of a woodland that is totally infested with garlic mustard will send a shiver up your spine.
In addition to the technical side, the book also explains the 'why we should care' part that is essential if we want to get action, especially by our elected officials.
The book itself is an example of what one person can do. The author was a self-described suburban housewife who cared about the local environment, but didn't know how to identify the invasive plants and there wasn't a handy resource guide. So she wrote this one! Sadly Betty Czarpata died of ovarian cancer in 2003 when the book was nearly complete but not yet published.
Winner of the Wisconsin Council on Invasive Species 2005 Invader Crusader Award.
Excellent Comprehensive Manual.......2006-02-28
This guide has invasives divided into multiple categories ranging from exotics that are of major concern to natives that are sometimes of concern. It has detailed identification of each species and gives the options for control, including mechanical, chemical, and biological. The control information includes the details on chemical concentration, time of year, and temperature. There is a lot of incorrect information on the internet on invasives control and this book is a good source of reliable information.

Practical reference for invasive plants.......2007-05-16
This book is much more than a field guide. The authors provide practical advice on eradicating invasive species, as well as fascinating histories of how the invasive plants got here in the first place. It's amazing how many of them were brought over for gardens! The guide is thorough, covering both terrestrial and aquatic species. Recommended for anyone with pesky invasive plant problems, be it a homeowner or a natural resource manager.
A Great, Comprehensive Field Guide to Invasive Plants.......2007-04-25
This book is an outstanding reference for homeowners, hikers, naturalists, and botanists trying to learn more about what plants are invasive in their backyards, neighborhood parks, and forests and what to do about them. I especially like the pictures -- most useful for identification. And not only can you learn to identify invasive plants, but the book has informative sections for each species on why that species is a problem and how to control it. I really liked the fascinating stories behind the plants. Once you take a look at this book, you will start seeing invasive plants everywhere.
Book Description
Invasive species--those nonnative organisms that aggressively spread into the landscape--are widely recognized as major threats to biological diversity, second only to direct habitat loss. This book provides specific information about the biology and control of the 78 nonnative plant species that are listed by the California Exotic Pest Plant Council (CalEPPC) as being of greatest ecological concern in California.
The heart of the book consists of species accounts, each description illustrated with a close-up photo, a habitat photo, and line drawings showing details to aid identification. The text addresses the following questions about each speices: How do I recognize it? Where would I find it? Where did it come from and how does it spread? What problems does it cause? How does it grow and reproduce? How can I get rid of it?
Many invasives can be halted or slowed, and in certain circumstances even badly infested areas can be restored. With the help of this book, land managers, volunteer stewards, conservationists, and others concerned with wildlands in the western United States can better understand invasive plants and help combat the damage they do.

Customer Reviews:
An informative book.......2007-01-11
This is a very interesting and informative book concerning some of the plants you are most likely to see in California's semi-urbanized wild places... that is, you're often more likely to see these plants than native plants.
However, only a limited number of plants are covered, and there are quite a few very common and highly invasive species that I wish she'd included. This is a compliment to the amount of information she provides about the plants that ARE in the book: where the plant came from, how to get rid of it, how it propagates, various musings of someone evidently quite familiar with the species, and more.
Also, there are a number of species that only occur in southern California, so if you live further north like me, this information is not especially useful.
Excellent Work!.......2003-01-24
This books is the first book to compile information of invasive species that are a threat to native plant communties. The review for each plant is superb citing historical, physiological, and distribution information. I strongly recommend this book for anyone studying invasive plant species. This book will not be of much help the gardener, but it is incredibly helpful to the conservationist and academic.
Not up to standards?.......2002-04-01
When comparing this with "Invasive_Plants. Weeds of the Global Garden" it would seem logical that at more than three times the price this book would offer considerably more. It does offer more text, and color pictures that are a little bigger. In addition there are small maps of California, showing distribution and small line drawings. This book would gain in accessibility if each new species started on a new page, if the line drawings were of a size and quality more aimed to facilitate recognising the species and if a more consistent format of color picture had been used, preferably showing some characteristic details.
By the way I do worry about the way both books recommend the use of herbicides like glyphosates (roundup and the like): it sounds as if the cure may be worse than the plague.

introduction to a hidden problem.......2002-03-21
I will go a long way in agreeing with the other reviewers. This is a simple, accessible book, that gives a lot of practical information on a problem that is worse than I thought and certainly deserves attention.
However, some minor quibles with the other reviews: this is a modest book with photographs that are only modest in size. It falls short of being an attractive book for browsing (a coffee-table book) as well as short of being a field guide (used to ID plants). Also it showcases only a modest selection of plants
Nevertheless: a useful introduction to plants invading the US.
This book is a great tool........1999-10-05
I got this book for my school's Enivornmental Club (Hartford Union High School; Hartford, WI) and used it a bunch of times to determine which plants are "good" and which plants are "bad". Our group was hired to remove Purple Loosestrife from the marsh of a nearby lake. This book was an important tool in our removal project of this noxious plant. It showed us different ways of removing this plant and showed us the pros and cons of using different chemicals. This book is a great tool for anyone interested in the outdoors and the protection of it.
Concerned about weeds in the natural environment? stop here.......1997-07-11
I work for the Department of Conservation in New Zealand. This book is refreshingly simple. Excellent pictures of around 50 species of invasive plants. The text explains weed environmental impacts, origins and distribution within the USA, and how to control the problem.
It is designed to be understood by all, layman and professional alike. It probably has wider application than the authors intended, although the title hints at their broad understanding of environmental weeds as an international problem. They knew we are needing simple on the ground solutions for identification and control of these species that threaten natural ecosystems everywhere.
It is applicable in New Zealand with many of the species being recognised as a problem here and in Australia. The other plants in this book may well become a problem here in future and I will be looking out for them here as I go about my business. The section on control methods was balanced covering both mechanical and chemical methods. As we say down under "Good on you" to the authors

Book Description
Demand for timber and fibre continues to grow and is being met by increased reliance on plantation forestry. Many of the plantations that are being grown around the globe are non-native species that have characteristics of rapid growth and good commercial qualities. In some cases, the high rates of production are a result of the absence of native herbivore and diseases. This limited pest status is threatened as pest species move around the globe. At the same time there is concern about threats of these non-native plantation species on native communities and the impact of changing climates on forest productivity. This volume explores many of these issues for the first time.
