Customer Reviews:
Dream Book.......2006-06-27
This book will set your imagination on fire and motivate you to turn your ordinary backyard into a mini-paradise. Lots of pictures to drool over, you will find yourself thumbing thru it again and again..
Outdoor Rooms.......2004-07-28
This is a great "thumb thur" book. It has really nice pictures of outdoor areas that are very "architectural".... Not helpful for the "average joe" looking for ideas to create your own backyard/outdoor patio/room.
Great for Entertaining Types.......2002-02-28
If you need ideas on how to create outdoor spaces for entertaining - this book is for you. Dining, lounging, dining, lounging... Even different photos of the same patio have different place settings on the tables to give you dining ideas. After a while, I began looking for spaces where you could do something other than dine, or lounge. Overall, nice photos of nice outdoor spaces, but limited appeal.
Fresh ideas, lots of variety, great mixing of materials.......2001-04-17
When looking for fresh ideas and inspiration on how to create the prefect outdoor space you needn't look any further than this book. From a modern symmetrical porch to lush English gardens, it showcases a wide range of styles. With so much to choose from anyone can find something to suit their taste.
Many of the outdoor rooms have pools. It is amazing how they manage to flawlessly integrate the pools into the environment without making them seem out of place or just thrown there. The magnificent outdoor spaces truly become a part of the home.
I love the combination of styles and how they compliment one another. One room features the creamy white walls of Greece, a timber roof and hot Mexican colors in a cushioned seat. Large color photos tell the story with brief descriptions of each example.
In the back there is a sampler of fine furnishing and accessories form a variety of different styles including historical, rustic, Mediterranean/island, and geometric. There is also a helpful directory of design professionals, photographers and product sources.
If you love concrete & steel, this book is for you!.......2001-04-04
Or if you love browsing Swedish furniture catalogues, buy this book! Unfortunately, I'm not a big concrete & steel fan or heavily into Swedish furniture. It's a lovely book but if, like me, you're looking for garden inspiration or expecting visions that incorporate trees and plants, look elsewhere and save your money. The designs for outdoor rooms in this book left me cold. I gave it a reasonably good rating because I realize that readers who love modern architecture will probably enjoy it.

Book Description
Brawling, street-wise prose poems push the boundaries of narrative form, taking the reader through the physical and psychological landscapes of East Los Angeles.
Customer Reviews:
One of my faves.......2006-02-04
A collection of prose-poems. Evocative of Raymond Chanlder and John Fante. This book made me think of LA writers.
A shocking thing just happened. As I thought the words to the second sentence, I was posessed with doubt because his book is old to me, and hasn't been opened in years. So I flipped to a page to read a little of it, hoping to refresh my memory. The page read:
America is in the Heart and we are in the canebreak, we do not want to see St. Quentin again, John Fante and Raymond Chandler meet across from Pershing Square to make know-nothing commentary on Jazz joints down Central Avenue, we pack flour into sacks and stack them on trucks to remain in white while our families perish in the epidemic and they are burning down Chinatown to rid the city of slavery and disease, who knows what sort of man was hanging in the tree because he didn't have any skin left on him, the locomotive scared horses off Main Street, steam boiled up on us in the park behind the fruit stalls they sell little bottles of sex odos and maybe I need one maybe I need a new name an American name and I could be one of thousands getting up early to ride the trolley to San Pedro and take the exam for the shipyard.
Edgy, Funny, Substantial.......2004-11-28
The thing I liked about this book was how the words and images reflect the chaotic, blurry landscape of what it's like to live in L.A. It's not just black & white here, and Foster, who is a mixed-race Asian/Caucasian who grew up in East L.A., shows that complexity through a sharp sense of language and imagery, without sentimentality or preachiness. This is some of the best prose/poetry coming out of LA.
Fresh perspective,sharp insight.......1998-06-30
Sesshu Foster manages to strip away the conventions of most modern poetry. With the sparest prose, he achieves a work of balance and beauty, while describing a true time and a place of grit, violence and confusion. Sesshu Foster has made the sublime lucid and the ineffable experierience clear. An outstanding choice
Poetry for our day - Foster is a dazzling talent.......1998-02-18
It doesn't matter if you've never seen a barrio, if you've never set foot in the inner city, if you feel you can't relate to the frustrations and failures of povery-level existence in East L.A. This book isn't a tract or a sociological study. It's about the stories we tell ourselves, that we tell about people we know and used to know, related in language as harsh as life, and as lovely.
How does Foster manage to keep his eye trained so unblinkingly on the ruin around him, the damage and debris, the lives wasted and the buildings razed, and yet write with such grace, and yearning? Plenty of the poems are angry, plenty of them rant against a system skewed against the poor working person, the lone man exhausted after a day at work trying to get his broken down car to a community meeting in the rain, the vet unable to make his way back into the world, even 20 years later. But even in these there is the surprise of a line veering into reverie, or leaping into joke, an image that tastes of pleasure.
This is Foster's love song to City Terrace; he is a lover with his eyes wide open, aware of all his loved one's shortcomings and fatal flaws, adoring of its smallest charms. The freshness of Foster's language is a revelation, and a gift. And the book itself, the physical item, is gorgeous, worthy of the genius inside.
In this info-glutted world, this is the kind of book we need, that cuts through to the red-hot core of who we are. It deserves to be read.
A Thrilling Journey.......1997-07-12
CITY TERRACE FIELD MANUAL is a exciting and thrilling journey into the depths of East Los Angeles as seen through the eyes of one who has lived it. From the graffitti in the back of chinese owned markets on the Avenue to the fading murals by Willie Heron, Sesshu Foster delves deep into the inner soul of City Terrace, ferreting out the hidden signs and subliminal references that clouded his childhood. This book is like a spinal tap into the heart of Los Angeles. It is the words of someone who has lived it. A guide for the past that applies to the future. It is a manual for living. It is...THE CITY TERRACE FIELD MANUAL

Customer Reviews:
Inspirational but not instructional.......2003-01-29
The beautiful photographs in this book will provide much inspiration for those looking to design a path or walkway, but don't look for a "how to" set of instructions. The author provides some general guidelines and points to consider, but seems to believe that one should leave paving to the professionals.
Inspirational & beautiful garden path ideas.......2000-05-02
This book is about the role of paving in adding beauty and functionality to the garden. The multitude of materials and patterns presented should yield something easily adaptable to each reader's own situation.
Many of the examples shown are in large formal gardens, but the ideas are viable on a smaller scale as well. There are also a number of projects for smaller patios and walkways.
Materials used include stone, concrete, brick, terracotta, wood and loose aggregates. Design, installation and the construction of steps are covered.
This book is a visual delight for the color photos of beautiful gardens incorporating paved features on every page. These are an inspiration to any gardener.
Book Description
The desire to have a home of one’s own is still the leading motivation for those who wish to construct or purchase buildings. Row and twin houses and ribbon developments constitute an affordable alternative to the single-family house, especially for young families. In times of tight budgets and rising investment costs, they represent a sensible alternative to the freestanding single-family house, particularly in terms of their use of open space. That they can also be appealing, high-quality houses is shown by the selected international examples in this new volume in the series In Detail.
The projects presented are organized by building material and clearly documented with an area map, ground plans, and interrelated sections. The documentation of examples is supplemented by technical articles offering concrete support and assistance for the planner and building sponsor. In addition to analyzing the typology of the high-density, single-family house, the volume introduces different planning and financing models as well as energy-saving building methods and construction with prefabricated parts.
Book Description
A wealth of ideas for creating atmospheric gardens and stylish, contemporaty ideas for outdoor living and entertaining. More than 300 evocative photographs.

Customer Reviews:
For large roofs mainly.......2006-02-23
Interesting, but mainly specialized to larger roof garden. Therefore less suitable for a relatively smaal balcony
Gorgeous, contained gardens - and more.......2000-05-14
This beautiful book is helpful in answering some design conundrums which comparable books do not tackle nearly as elegantly. (How to grow a lot of plants in a small space without creating a traffic jam -- for example.) There are photos of thrilling small garden spaces which - refreshingly - can actually be replicated fairly easily. It's a great book to drool over, but also a true reference; a good combination.
a pretty good book for general information........1999-11-10
the pictures in this book are amazing, although for the project i was working on, i found it lacking where it covered roofotp gardening. it seemed to be too general to give very accurate information for what i needed.
