Book Description
For better plans-and better projects
The complete guide to site analysis
Site analysis is the key to a well-designed project. In fact, the careful and complete analysis of a site and its surrounding context can lead to better development proposals, smoother design implementation, and, ultimately, higher quality built environments.
This carefully conceived book is the first to detail each crucial step in the site analysis and planning process, from site selection through design development. It shows how these activities are integrated to arrive at a site plan that successfully balances the needs of the client and other stakeholders with the site's suitability for the intended land uses. With more than 130 illustrations, this book includes many outstanding examples of maps and site plans created by leading land planning firms. It offers guidance on:
* Site identification, evaluation, and selection
* Site inventories of physical, biological, and cultural attributes
* Land use suitability analysis using Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
* Concept planning and design development
* Graphic communication with clients, government agencies, and other stakeholders
Filled with need-to-know information on the entire land planning and design process, Site Analysis is a vital addition to the library of students and professionals in landscape architecture, urban design and planning, and related areas.

Customer Reviews:
Reply to A Blunderous Attempt.......2005-10-25
I haven't read the book, but as a production manager for a publishing company for a number of years, I can only say that it is not the author's responsibility or fault that there were errors. It is the copyeditor's responsibility to make sure that two plus two equal four(even in artwork), and the proofreader's responsibility to make sure there are no misspellings. It's nice if the author can catch them, but they rarely do--that's why we hire copyeditors and proofreaders.
As to metric--don't know. Is the author or the book publisher European? The rest of the world uses metric, although there are some in the U.S. that use metric (CalTrans, for instance). All I can think of is that the editor was pushing a metric book to be the first on the block, or to sell to a bigger European market....
A good book for introduction of Land Development.......2003-12-09
I got this book just one month ago. This book is very good for the introduction of Land Development. As for the units, I think that some engineers don't like S-I Units (especially the engineers in the east coast). But in the future, all the people around the world will use it.
Anyway, we can use this book for the introduction material. There are a lot of regulations and codes waiting for us to read.
A Blunderous Attempt.......2000-09-10
The author makes a poor effort to even proof read her work. Several of the examples of design are filled with mathematical errors that someone with a professional license should not be making. With most of the professionals in the field of land development using English units, the author's insistent use of metric makes her work difficult to examine and even less useful as a design guide.

Book Description
The second edition is an "all-in-one" combination of basic theory and practical exercises with software and data included on a CD-ROM. Potential readers/users are students of Photogrammetry, Geodesy, Geography and other sciences, but also all who are interested in this topic. No prior knowledge is necessary, except the handling of standard PCs. Theory is presented true to the motto "as little as possible, but as much as necessary".
The main part of the book contains several tutorials. In increasing complexity, accompanied by texts explaining further theory, the reader can proceed step by step through the particular working parts. All intermediate as well as the final results are discussed with reference to accuracy and error handling, and included on the CD-ROM to provide controls. Most of the standard work in Digital Photogrammetry is shown and trained for example scanning, image orientation, mono and stereo plotting, aerial triangulation measurement (manual and automatic), block adjustment, automatic creation of surface models via image matching, creation of ortho images and mosaics, and others. Not only standard situations are dealt with but also more complex ones, such as unknown camera data, extreme relief or areas with very low contrast. Examples of both aerial and close-range photogrammetry present the power of these type of measurement techniques.
The software is not limited to the example data included but may be used for personal projects. Part of the book comprises a complete description of the software. On the CD-ROM, versions in German, English and Spanish are available. Even 3-D images can be viewed with the accompanying 3-D glasses.
Customer Reviews:
Good texbook overall........2007-04-20
This book can seem a bit overwhelming at first. It is not a book you read quickly and completely understand. It can be time consuming. The software that is included is decent though, considering the book was a hundred bucks.

Not a good reference (Pathetic!).......2005-04-18
I just tooke the Engineering Survey section of the PE Exam two days ago and used this book as a reference. I DEFINITELY would NOT RECOMMEND this book as a reference. It will not help you prepare for the exam and will give you a false impression of how the exam is going to be like. The practice problems that are on the PE are a thousand times harder then what is in this book. If you want to pass the Engineering Survey section this book will not help you at all! The only use I have for this book now is for toilet paper. If Amazon did not require a minimum star rating of 1 star I would have give it zero.

An Extremely Helpful, Easy to Understand Reference.......2000-05-06
As principal of a small environmental consulting firm, it is crititcal that I remain up-to-date on environmental requirements affecting my clients. Voluntary Cleanup Program (VCP) requiremnts, also known as Brownfield requirements, are often cumbersome, unclear, and incomplete. Mr. Russ' book, Redeveloping Brownfields: Landscape Architects, Site Planners, Developers, has helped to clarify the general "brownfields" process which is applicable throughout the Country and the specific requirements of Maryland's VCP program. We are greatful for this very valuable guide.
Redeveloping Brownfields.......2000-04-05
As a consultant in the field of redeveloping properties with environmental concerns, Redeveloping Brownfields, by Thomas H. Russ, was enlightening. This book can be used as a reference for all those involved in the urban redevelopment industry. The book provided handy and useful disussions of methods used to redevelop problem sites as well as proper methods for assessing environmental site issues. The book helped provide a comprehensive understanding of issues from assessment to reoccupancy. For all those in the industry or having a desire to learn more about Brownfields, this book is a must.

Walking Tours of Boston's Made Land
ASIN: 0262194945 |
Book Description
Fully one-sixth of Boston is built on made land. Although other waterfront cities also have substantial areas that are built on fill, Boston probably has more than any city in North America. In Gaining Ground historian Nancy Seasholes has given us the first complete account of when, why, and how this land was created.
The story of landmaking in Boston is presented geographically; each chapter traces landmaking in a different part of the city from its first permanent settlement to the present. Seasholes introduces findings from recent archaeological investigations in Boston, and relates landmaking to the major historical developments that shaped it. At the beginning of the nineteenth century, landmaking in Boston was spurred by the rapid growth that resulted from the burgeoning China trade. The influx of Irish immigrants in the mid-nineteenth century prompted several large projects to create residential land--not for the Irish, but to keep the taxpaying Yankees from fleeing to the suburbs. Many landmaking projects were undertaken to cover tidal flats that had been polluted by raw sewage discharged directly onto them, removing the "pestilential exhalations" thought to cause illness. Land was also added for port developments, public parks, and transportation facilities, including the largest landmaking project of all, the airport.
A separate chapter discusses the technology of landmaking in Boston, explaining the basic method used to make land and the changes in its various components over time. The book is copiously illustrated with maps that show the original shoreline in relation to today’s streets, details from historical maps that trace the progress of landmaking, and historical drawings and photographs.
Customer Reviews:
Fascinating history.......2007-08-13
If one lives and Boston and was curious about what the city looked like 100, 200, 300, or 400 years ago this is the book for you. I discovered that somewhere between 1837 and 1851 the street I lived in was filled and went from being underwater to land.
An incredibly well-researched history of how people altered the landscape of Boston.
A Spectacular Work. .......2007-04-01
Disclaimer: I was very fortunate to take the Harvard University class tought by the author, which uses this book as the class text.
This book is a spectacular work of research and writing. The author truly shows her passion for the subject.
The text presents a unique view of Boston history, with stunning detail and even intrigue. The historical and original maps are without equal, and the photographs and illustrations are superb selections.
Pardon the cliché, but truly I found myself unable to put this book down!
Her recent book Walking Tours of Boston's Made Land is also a must-have for anyone who wants to get close-up and personal with Boston history.
Gaining Ground.......2005-08-04
This is a wonderful book about how Boston changed in the last 200+ years. It is very readable, but I especially enjoyed the pictures and maps. It is an excellent book for anyone interested in the subject.
Encyclopedic, entertaining, extraordinary - simply the best!.......2003-10-13
Seasholes must have combed every archive and walked every inch of Boston to produce this monumental book. Not only is it exhaustive, but it is entertaining as well. Although this is a handsome book it is not a cooffe table enterprise. This is a book you will want to take with you as you walk the streets of Boston. This book is destined to become dog eared and underlined. It is simply a must for anyone interested in the history of this great city.
