Customer Reviews:
It's the best resource I found for survival data analysis!.......1997-10-21
As a graduate student in epidemiology who is incessantly looking for better ways to learn abstract concepts in statistics, I highly recommend this book by Elisa Lee. It's one of the few books that I found which explains advanced level statistics, such as parametric and non-parametric analysis, in a way that non-statisticans like myself can understand. It's also a handy reference to have at your side while reading the methods section of journal articles.

Customer Reviews:
A must-have book for young ecologists.......2004-03-28
This is a wonderful book. As a graduating senior in Ecology, I can say that there is no way I could have completed my research without this book. Krebs is cited in journal articles constantly, and there is a reason - this reference work is thorough, well written and gives many examples to follow. I also recommend the EcoMeth software mentioned in the text, it is well worth the cost. Just browsing through the book will give you ideas on how to analyze your data. It even provides wonderful advice for those just in the process of setting up their experiments. All in all, it's top notch!
Excellent reference text.......2000-11-10
Krebs' text is a thorough and outstanding reference for any ecologist. This is is the ideal balance of technical background and practical application of methods commonly used in ecology. Ive found other sources either too cursory or far too involved with derivations of formulae, etc. Krebs hits the major points for the methods he discusses, describes the strengths and weaknesses, and gives the original citations (for most) so the reader can seek more information if necessary.

Book Description
The third edition of this classic text maintains its focus on applications of demographic models, while extending its scope to matrix models for stage-classified populations. The authors first introduce the life table to describe age-specific mortality, and then use it to develop theory for stable populations and the rate of population increase. This theory is then revisited in the context of matrix models, for stage-classified as well as age-classified populations. Reproductive value and the stable equivalent population are introduced in both contexts, and Markov chain methods are presented to describe the movement of individuals through the life cycle. Applications of mathematical demography to population projection and forecasting, kinship, microdemography, heterogeneity, and multi-state models are considered.
The new edition maintains and extends the book's focus on the consequences of changes in the vital rates. Methods are presented for calculating the sensitivity and elasticity of population growth rate, life expectancy, stable stage distribution, and reproductive value, and for applying those results in comparative studies.
Stage-classified models are important in both human demography and population ecology, and this edition features examples from both human and non-human populations. In short, this third edition enlarges considerably the scope and power of demography. It will be an essential resource for students and researchers in demography and in animal and plant population ecology.
From the reviews:
"If you found the original editions...to be excellent (and who amoung us has not?) then you will find the new edition to be equally so...This book is highly and unreservedly recommended for any beginning mathematical demographer."
Mathematical Population Studies, 12:223-228, 2005
"The material in the second edition is retained, although the chapters are reorganized and references are updated. New chapters focusing on matrix population models are seamlessly interwoven with the second edition chapters, resulting in a thorough and comprehensive treatment of human, animal, and nonhuman demography."

Book Description
Interpreting statistical information and carrying out statistical procedures is an integral part of veterinary and animal science. This successful textbook, now in its second edition and with an accompanying CD, provides the reader with the necessary information to handle numerical data and critically appraise the statistical methodology in the literature in the fields of veterinary and animal science. Written in a non-mathematical way with an emphasis on assimilating underlying concepts and correctly interpreting computer output, it contains numerous worked real examples to help the reader develop an understanding of the procedures.Revised and updated throughout, this new edition of Statistics for Veterinary and Animal Scienceis now accompanied by a CD containing the datasets used in the examples so that the user can work through the procedures;assumes no prior knowledge of statistics;features learning objectives and exercises in every chapter to evaluate progress in understanding;includes helpful flowcharts to provide a guide to the correct analysis of data;contains glossaries of notation and terminology which act as ready reference;indicates the more advanced sections that can be skipped initially without loss of continuity;includes a new chapter in which the fundamental importance of statistics to the practice of evidence-based veterinary medicine is clearly demonstrated and explained;incorporates new material on regression methods such as Poisson regression, regression models for clustered data, Cox proportional hazards regression models for survival data and generalized linear models.Specifically written for veterinary science and animal science students, researchers and practitioners for whom no other suitable text exists.
Customer Reviews:
An outstanding survey.......2007-04-19
Interpreting statistical information is a part of veterinary and animal science: college-level students will find Statistics for Veterinary and Animal Science, 2nd Edition the perfect text for handling and understanding numeral data and statistics in the fields of vet and animal science. You'd expect such a book to be loaded with calculations and math: it's actually written in a non-mathematical way to emphasize underlying concepts and how to interpret computer output, and comes with a cd containing the datasets used in the examples. An outstanding survey which assumes no prior knowledge of statistics, this is a top pick for any college collection strong in veterinary science.

Book Description
This is the first book to provide an accessible comprehensive introduction to wildlife population assessment methods. It uses a new approach that makes the full range of methods accessible in a way that has not previously been possible. Traditionally, newcomers to the field have had to face the daunting prospect of grasping new concepts for almost every one of the many methods. In contrast, this book uses a single conceptual (and statistical) framework for all the methods. This makes understanding the apparently different methods easier because each can be seen to be a special case of the general framework. The approach provides a natural bridge between simple methods and recently developed methods. It also links closed population methods quite naturally with open population methods. The book is accompanied by free software on the web, in the form of an R library, allowing readers to get some "hands-on" experience with the methods and how they perform in different contexts - without the considerable effort and expense required to do this in the real world. It also provides a tool for teaching the methods, including a means for teachers to generate examples and exercises customised to the needs of their students. As the first truly up-to-date and introductory text in the field, this book should become a standard reference for students and professionals in the fields of statistics, biology and ecology.

Book Description
Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE) or "mad cow disease," first diagnosed in late 1986, is transmitted through feed, indirect horizontal transmission, apparently maternally and possibly horizontally, through cattle-to-cattle contact or a contaminated environment. With no ante-mortem test yet developed, the only information available about BSE is from case surveillance and a limited number of experiments. Only through careful and rigorous modeling and analysis can reliable estimates of past infection and predictions of future cases be made. The modeling developed for BSE utilizes a range of techniques from statistics, ecology, and demography that is of interest both as a case study and for providing tools for other modeling projects. Statistical Aspects of BSE and vCJD: Models for Epidemics presents the general methodology required for thorough analysis and modeling of novel long incubation diseases with largely unknown etiology. BSE in British cattle is the primary example system presented, but applicationto other diseases, particularly the transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (e.g., Scrapie in sheep and nvCJD in humans) are also highlighted. The book concentrates on presenting an exposition of the "state-of-the-art" rather than introductory material on the mathematical/statistical modeling of infectious diseases.
