Combat silent inflammation -- the most serious health threat you never heard of
Heart disease is the #1 killer of Americans.
Cancer is the #1 fear of Americans.
Dementia is the #1 concern of Americans.
What do these devastating illnesses have in common? All three have been linked to silent inflammation, a condition that occurs when the body's natural immune response goes awry. Silent inflammation attacks the heart, arteries, and even the brain -- and you will not even know it. Obesity is the primary cause of silent inflammation and excess body fat is causing today's epidemic rise in countless health threats.
Now Dr. Barry Sears shows you how to combat silent inflammation in this comprehensive guide. His research shows that following the Zone dietary plan, including supplements of ultrarefined fish oil concentrates, is the best way to ensure the future of your health. You can reduce your risk of each disease and condition, or reverse silent inflammation if you have it already -- in only thirty days. The Anti-Inflammation Zone includes a week of Zone meals, exercises that you can do at home, and tools and tests for determining your level of silent inflammation. Follow this plan and enjoy these benefits:
- Better health
- Greater longevity
- Reduced symptoms of chronic diseases
- Improved emotional control
- Greater mental acuity
- Improved physical performance

Customer Reviews:
There are some good ideas in this book, but Sears' sloppy argumentation is a burden on the reader.......2007-08-29
My chiropractor gave me this book to read after I complained that working out wasn't ceasing my back spasms. He wanted me to start a core workout program rather than continue with a bodybuilding workout program (after a month, the former has greatly reduced my back pain and increased strength in my back and legs), and he also thought I wasn't eating right. I began the core program immediately and started reading Dr. Sears' book, initially in earnest.
I don't think Dr. Sears is wrong about the significance of all kinds of inflammation as well as the health benefits of taking purified, high-dose fish oil. Like a good theorist, he compiles the work of many, many previous researchers and concludes an untested theory that truly deserves a massive study to confirm Sears' contentions. All of that is fine.
But I now understand why my doctor gave me the book while mentioning some reservations about its content. First and foremost, this is probably the most repetitive book I have ever read. In fact, I did not read every word, or even every chapter. I felt insulted when I would read the same ideas in every chapter, often the same sentences and phrasing. The exercise section is pathetic and possibly dangerous if you have a bad back. Don't bother reading it. The week's worth of meals is also weak, yet the exercise and meal sections together total 100 pages. Notes and appendices comprise another 100 pages. Discounting those sections, Sears leaves only 200 pages to explain what his book is about. And he's not going to make it pleasant. What's funny about repetition in a book is that it actually confuses the reader, because each time a concept is repeated, something new is added to it so that it becomes foreign again. Sears truly needs an editor.
That being said, the essence of his ideas is interesting, but I imagine there are not more than 100 pages of text worth reading here. In a nutshell, Sears believes you should take high-dose fish oil (make sure it's pure, like Eskimo-3, or a similarly reputable brand); avoid grains, rice, and pasta; eat small portions of protein at most meals; eat fruits and veggies; avoid sugar and juices; and avoid egg yolks, butter, vegetable oil, and a few other "bad" oils. That's it. Now if you really want to know why you should eat this way for the rest of your life, you'll have to read his book. Although it takes him a few hundred pages to get it out, the reasons for this diet and for taking fish oil are in there.
helpful.......2007-05-12
I've been on the Zone diet for over ten and a half years and now I want to help other people with the Zone diet. Dr. Sears' book was helpful along with his other books. I decided to double the amount of fish oil I take after reading this book. The Zone diet in general has been a great diet for me. My health and energy have improved greatly over the past ten years. I have lost over thirty pounds. The exercise portion was new. I don't watch TV much so exercising during my favorite TV program isn't quite my style, but it's an interesting idea and may work for a lot of people.
A Must Read.......2007-04-01
This book changed my eating habits for ever and I thought I already had good eating habits! For the first time in my life, I no longer have feelings of hypoglicemia and I lost, slowly but surely, 11lbs in 3 months, without feeling hungry. This is more a way of eating long-term than a diet. I started running at about the same time I bought this book, I am currently training for a half marathon and I find this way of eating very compatible with an active lifestyle. Since I do not eat meat, I also bought the Soy Zone.
So far it's been very helpful.......2006-11-03
I listened to the audiobook and the next day I started with the zone diet and the extra-refined fish oil, after 2 weeks I definitely feel better. I would really recommend this to others.
It's not as complicated as Sears wants you to believe.......2006-08-14
Sears wants you to think he has come up with a complicated system which he calls The Zone.
In reality, all you need is to eat naturally, like our ancestors did thousands of years ago. Eat greens, vegetables, berries, fruit, mushrooms, nuts. Eat lean meat (our ancestors hunted for healthy, lean animals). Eat egg whites, but avoid yolks. Most of the modern contaminants stick to fat molecules, and yolks are mostly fat. Plus it's the wrong type of fat, as chickens are not fed properly. Eat wild fish (but not too often; don't forget about pollutants).
That's it. Forget grains (and everything made from them). Forget potatoes and hard beans, soda and juices. Forget vegetable oils. All that junk is completely unnatural for humans to eat; our ancestors couldn't imagine that was edible. And that's why we have diseases that they didn't have.
Forget milk. Milk is only good for babies under 3 years old. Studies show that milk (and even yogurt) causes hyperinsulinemia (insulin "spikes" that lead to diabetes etc.) in adults.
Yes, his advice to take fish oil is great. Farm-raised animals are fed with junk food; consequently, they lack certain fatty acids that are vital for our health. Fish oil is a convenient way of restoring the balance. But Sears' fish oil is not the purest and cheapest on the market.
I'm a physiologist, and I've helped a number of people to change their eating habits. Those people have gotten rid of many problems, like obesity, allergies, asthma, arthritis, and excessive fatigue. And they don't complain that the food is not delicious enough. They learned to use their imagination a little bit and combine various healthy foods to create their nice and simple "recipes", and realized they enjoy their food even more than before.

Customer Reviews:
the BEST.......2007-06-11
Dr. Noga is the leading authority on fish diseases that those of us in the aquarium industry deal with on a daily basis. This book is full of knowledge and wonderful pictures as well that make diagnosis easier and treatment quicker. We use this book so often that this is the third copy that I have purchased. Definately a must have for any fish geek's book collection and/or reference shelf.
Systemic Approach.......2003-07-14
This book has been very helpful as I begin my hobby in aquarium science. Fish will get sick and I like the systemic approach that this book takes. Many books on fish disease barely cover the surface and don't discuss anything but the most common ailments. Well done, well referenced.
Well done....the best book I've ever seen on fish health!.......1998-12-17
This is an excellent book for fish health professionals and students alike. It contains methods for diagnosing fish diseases as well as detailed biology, life history, and the current most effective treatment regimen for each organism. The book covers environmental problems, as well as bacteriology, virology, parasitology, and nutritional deficiencies. It is well written and organized making it a good resource book for the laboratory.

Book Description
Entertaining and informative, Pets in America is a portrait of Americans' relationships with the cats, dogs, birds, fishes, rodents, and other animals we call our own. More than 60 percent of U.S. households have pets, and America grows more pet-friendly every day. But as Katherine Grier demonstrates, the ways we talk about and treat our pets--as companions, as children, and as objects of beauty, status, or pleasure--have their origins long ago.
Grier begins with a natural history of animals as pets, then discusses the changing role of pets in family life, new standards of animal welfare, the problems presented by borderline cases such as livestock pets, and the marketing of both animals and pet products. She focuses particularly on the period between 1840 and 1940, when the emotional, behavioral, and commercial characteristics of contemporary pet keeping were established. The story is peppered with the warmth and humor of anecdotes from period diaries, letters, catalogs, and newspapers.
Filled with illustrations reflecting the whimsy, the devotion, and the commerce that have shaped centuries of American pet keeping, Pets in America ultimately shows how the history of pets has evolved alongside changing ideas about human nature, child development, and community life.
This book accompanies a museum exhibit, "Pets in America," which opens at the McKissick Museum in Columbia, South Carolina, in December 2005 and will travel to five other cities from May 2006 through May 2008.
Customer Reviews:
Pets in America: A History.......2007-08-28
Pets in America: A History, was purchased as a gift to a friend who is a pet-lover. She seemed delighted with the gift. I skimmed but did not read the book in detail.
Our "favorites".......2006-05-16
"Pets in America", an astonishingly comprehensive new book by Katherine C. Grier, relates the history of pets as we have known them from the earliest days of our nation. In doing so, she has given us a compelling look at the evolution of how different animals became popular pets, how we treat pets as a society and what their needs are compared to ours.
Grier begins by asking "what is a pet?" and then follows up with remarks about "why pets matter". She sets the stage for the reader to begin to view the animals we call "pets" (and what Americans in the nineteenth century called "favorites") in a different way than just furry little creatures that greet us upon our return home. One of the many surprises I found in reading "Pets in America" was that one hundred to one hundred fifty years ago the most popular pet to have was a caged bird. She explains part of the reason by saying that there was far less noise around then and songbirds added a cheerful level of volume that was most welcome in many homes.
While Grier's book understandably covers dogs, cats, birds and fish as the most common pets to find around the house, there is also a good deal of writing about livestock animals.....horses, swine, barnyard fowl and rabbits. There are many quotes from diarists of the 1800s and the most alluring ones come from children. Being much closer to "pets as dinner" she quotes a few girls who couldn't stand the thought of losing a newborn calf or lamb, knowing that it would end up on someone's dinner table....possibly their own. There's also a charming section on "the Bunnie States of America"....a club set up in 1898 by the children of an Albany, New York couple who had rules and regulations for their club, held meetings and wrote of the happenings of their beloved rabbits.
Grier takes an awful lot of time in the middle of the book describing the liberal goodness of the upper middle class and their views toward treating animals with kindness and respect. Although she presents her case effectively, it is the one place where "Pets in America" bogs down a little but she picks right up again with a chapter titled, "Pet keeping and its dilemmas". As animals moved closer to humans with their increased indoor contact, boundaries necessitated change. Understandably, at the same time, livestock became more foreign to many Americans with the advent of the automobile, as horses were decreasingly necessary for transportation. However, Grier describes in great detail what city life was like prior to that with pigs running through the streets, chickens cackling in many a backyard and the undeniable stench of horse manure. The seemy side of pet life....those who dealt in the selling, trading and butchering of pets is a terrific addition to the work. It's hard to believe, sometimes, that we are just a few generations removed from all of that.
The author finishes up with a look at the twentieth century arrival (on a large scale) of pet stores, pet food and other accoutrements such as "clothing" and bedding. There is not much about veterinary medicine in this book other to say that in earlier times, a pet's best caregiver (and often its only doctor) was its owner.
Many wonderful, early photographs and drawings accompany "Pets in America". It's a welcome addition to a fantastic book. I highly recommend "Pets in America" for its depth and incisiveness and I applaud Katherine Grier for combining a straightforward analysis with an outstanding narrative.

Customer Reviews:
Concise to the extreme.......2006-10-18
There are a few reasons to get this book:
1) You are a medical student and have many rotations and limited money and do not know if you are going in to PM&R yet.
2) You are a resident and need to have a small book that will fit in your pocket. You can read a few pages while waiting for your attending to get off the phone or back from coffee :)
3) You are an attending who tends to focus in one area and needs a refresher in another area of rehab.
4) You are a PT, OT, PA, nurse, or advanced practice nurse who wants to review more information in a affordable book with a concise format.
The book is really small (and so is the printing). I have carried this book pretty much since my PGY-4 year. I have probably read it 10 times by now in 1-2 page bursts. It fits in my pocket about as well as my PDA.
A book this abbreviated is very difficult to use as a PRIMARY study guide. There are significant areas not discussed. However, the material that is covered is very well abstracted from longer books and articles. It reads like someone took great notes from different sources and bound them together. Additionally, there are several good tables in the book that I refer to regularly.
Overall, this book has helped me tremendously as a resident and I have been recommending it for years. A few people get disgruntled that it is so abbreviated, but they still carry it in their pocket!
Excellent.......2006-08-09
With so much information in such a small package, you really can't go wrong. I carry this and Essential Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation around with me. While EPMR has more text, Choi's book is great for quickest access to what you need the most. My only complaint is that some important info seems to have been left out. But, then, it is a small review book...so you can't have everything. Overall, this book is definitely worth getting.
superb book, great for boards, text small.......2006-06-30
A lot of people i know crammed for either or both the written and oral Rehab boards using this book, and they said it definitely packs the most punch for the time and money. It is well written, acurate (very evidence-based and highly referenced). It contain so much info packed into a concise package, so maybe the text could be a little too small for some older docs or someone with bad near-vision. It's not meant for reading for too long due to eye strain, but maybe a chapter or 2 at a time over 10-15 minutes while on call. The book is mostly focused for residents and fellows, but I imagine could be useful as a quick pocket reference for attendings as well. A must for those working in rehab, but not formally trained as a physiatrist as well, such as NPs, PAs, PTs, etc. Hopefully this book will be updated in the next few years. While it is up to date for the date of publication (2003), containing lots of references from the 2000's, it would be great for the next generation of residents to have a book with refs from the 2003-2006 (or later) era as well, since evidence-based information is now at such a premium.
Many important topics not discussed.......2006-04-29
This is supposed to be a concise book, but it sadly does not tackle the most practical aspects that are needed for front-liners.
Example: when talk on amputee, prefers to talk on amputee gait instead of practical things like how to improve stump, how to deal with troubles with doning or doffing
Example: when talk about SCI, not even mention let alone discuss very important topics like bowel problems & sexual problems these young patients have
Example: when talk about pain, not even touch upon the topic of centralization, let alone discussing how to treat. The discussion on CRPS not up-to-date
Poor Buy, good alone for junior medical students
Best book on PM&R dollar for dollar.......2005-02-10
I have been using the preliminary Silver edition of Choi et al's PM&R Pocketpedia for over 3 years now and I still refer to this book daily in my clinical duties. The published version improves on the Silver edition and provides concise, quick reference for everyday PM&R needs. I would say that this book changed my life, since I carry the Silver edition everywhere and anywhere--I had it with me during my honeymoon. I dare anyone to carry Braddom or DeLisa with them. The only drawback to the published edition over the Silver preliminary version is its size--the Black cover version simply does not fit into my shirt pocket. Desite this, PM&R Pocketpedia is by far the best $25 I have spent in my brief career as a PM&R doc. I expect that this will be one in a series of PM&R-related Pocketpedia.

Product Description
Did you know that the root cause of serious chronic diseases such as heart disease, Alzheimer's disease, cancer, arthritis, and asthma has been identified as chronic inflammation? Although numerous studies have confirmed these findings, few physcians are aware of or consider the fact that the battle against inflammation is at the forefront of the fight for health and well-being of the global population. Authors Joseph Maroon and Jeffrey Bost have set out to reverse that trend with "Fish Oil: The Natural Anti-Inflammatory." Pharmaceujtical companies have spent billions of dollars in an attempt to understand the bio-chemistry of inflammation. Unfortunately, pharmaceutical anit-inflammatories such as Celebrex, Vioxx, and Bextra have been shown to greatly increase the risk of heart attack, stroke, and uncontrollable gastric hemorrhage, with potentially fatal consequences. Is there a safer alternative? Absolutiely! The answer lies in the power of the omega-3 fatty acids found in fish oil, undeniably the most under-recognized and also the most petent natural anti-inflammatory available. With compelling arguments and the results of thousands of clinical studies to support them. the uathors explain in plain and simple terms; How the inflammation process works and how it can evolve into a chroninc condition that is the cause of many diseases; How fatty acids work in the body; Why supplementtion with omega-3 fatty acids can restore the body's balance and mitigate the effects of inflmmatory factors; and why fish oil is the best source of omega-3 fatty acids, and how to identify good-quality fish oil supplements.
Customer Reviews:
Evidence-based and from a credible source.......2007-07-30
I started reading this from the back for the practical information on dosage and purity, but I'm already impressed. It's a pleasure to find a very recent book that lays out the science and data in a readable form. And once you're past the rah-rah cover (which the publisher probably insisted on), the tone is very objective. I'll be able to pass this on to a skeptical relative without it seeming like it's selling snake oil!
This book is exactly what I was looking for. It occurs to me, though, that it may not be an easy read for someone without science or research background. It's well written, but there's definitely a lot of terminology to process and absorb. For someone looking for a lightweight read, maybe one of the other books on the subject would be better.
Excellent Insight to Curing Chronic Inflamation.......2007-03-14
I have never been motivated to write a review before on Amazon.com, but I feel compelled to for this book. I have suffered for many years with chronic neck and joint pain and recently had my second surgery in ten years. After the surgery, I received a copy of this book. It offers a new way to examine the causes of chronic arthritic pain and logically and scientifically lays out the case for adding certain types of omega 3's to one's diet to help lessen pain. I am not a believer generally in "alternative medicines", but I also do not want to risk a lifetime on aspirins/ibuprofins or other "real medicines" which can have serious long term side effects as well. This book carefully details how the absence of fish from our modern diet has increased the natural inflamatory response of our bodies to the point where it is now hurting us rather than protecting us. Though thoroughly researched and well documented, this book is an easy read for the nonexpert. It also discusses omega 3 effects on other ailments such as alzheimers, cancer, depression, attention deficit disorder and others.I recommend this book specifically to anyone who has chronic arthritic or other spinal or joint related pains as well as to others who are seeking new ways of approaching other illnesses.

Fish Disease: Diagnosis and Treatment
ASIN: 0851991262 |
Book Description
Part of a three-volume series, this collection focuses largely on finfish and considers non-infectious disorders of development, growth, and physiology in wild and captive species. Topics include tumourigenesis, stress physiology and the effects of stressors on particular processes, and the effect of environmental factors (including toxic substances) on fish health. It features a chapter on the economic implications of non-infectious disorders in intensive aquaculture and concludes with a chapter on evaluation methods for the assessment of disorders at the individual, population and community level.
Book Description
The zebrafish has become one of the most important model organisms to study biologial processes in vivo. As a vertebrate that has many of the strengths of invertebrate model systems, it offers numerous advantages to researchers interested in many aspects of embryonic development, physiology and disease. The next few years will see the completion of large scale initiatives that exploit the zebrafish as a model system for the understanding of gene function in vertebrates, including the sequencing of the genome. The zebrafish will therefore play an increasingly important role in the future of biomedical research. Whole genome sequencing projects, such as the human genome project, have led to the isolation of tens of thousands of genes for which the in vivo function is unknown. It is therefore likely that an increasing number of researchers will turn to organisms such as the zebrafish to understand the in vivo requirement for the proteins these genes encode. Recent technical advances now allow the rapid testing of in vivo function of as yet uncharacterised genes in zebrafish in large numbers and at a speed that is impossible in other systems. This book not only provides a complete set of instructions that will allow researchers to establish the zebrafish in their laboratory. It also gives a broad overview of commonly used methods and a comprehensive collection of protocols describing the most powerful techniques.
