Book Description

Mention dog food, and even dogs may turn up their noses. Grim little pellets or mysterious meatlike concoctions need not be the latest trend in canine cuisine, according to author and dog lover Michele Bledsoe. In The Doggy Bone Cookbook, she shows how dog owners, numbering more than 43 million people, can bake love and nutrition into their furry friends’ diet.

This fun book grew out of testing hundreds of recipes. Each book comes with a bone-shaped cookie cutter and easy-to-bake veterinarian-approved recipes ranging from Peamutt Butter, Bark-B-Q, and Cinnabone, to Dig 'n' Cheese, Santa Paws, and Howl About a Mint. New to this edition are recipes for dogs with bad breath and for special birthday treats. Color illustrations appear on every page, and quotes from canine connoisseurs testify to the quality of these tail-wagging snacks.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars I Love this book.......2007-08-14

I purchased this book to start my doggy bag barkery business and the biscuits really sell. I recommend this book for anyone starting out in the business. Be careful with the Minty Bones because they mold quickly.

5 out of 5 stars woooftastic!!!.......2007-07-18

very good book though not many recipes (I think about 10) but very simple ingredients and easy to follow instructions. My copy also came with a bone shaped cookie cutter! very good though short and card pages so robust enough for kids etc... my dog loves the peanut biscuits

5 out of 5 stars Great book!.......2007-04-12

I agree with the reviewer 'Sally'. My dog loves EVERY recipe in this book! So while another book may have more recipes... it'll take you a while to sort through it and figure out which ones your dog will enjoy.
Another feature this book has that other books don't is a dog-bone shaped cookie cutter. Not the metal ones which fall apart or hurt my hands, but a sturdy red one that is easy to use and lasts a long time. I bought my first copy in the bookstore. I'm here to buy another one as a gift for a friend!

5 out of 5 stars Great simple and fun doggy treat recipe book........2006-10-08

This is such a great little recipe book for doggy treats. I wasn't sure which one I wanted though so I went to Borders myself and got this one.

Sure it doesn't have a 100+ pages of extensive expensive recipes that are boring to look at. This author tested many recipes before narrowing it down to these 12 or so. They are are great and my dog LOVES them. Seriously how many recipes does one dog need for treats anyway??

I also got this book because it is a boardbook, fun to look at, simple and the cookie cutter! It is so nice to have some recipes you can use the cookie cutter for. We even make a yogurt based coating to put on them for gifts to other doggies. It looked so good. I also want to use my Christmas cookie cutters this year to make little doogie treat baskets for our friends with dogs.

I highly recommend this book as a gift to kids 5-12 with dog(s) This is a unique gift that I am sure they would like to get. The cookie cutter hangs out of the side - very cute looking. My daughter can't get enough of this book - she even likes to look at the pictures in it and I LOVE that it is a boardbook - it will hold up for years!

5 out of 5 stars THIS IS A FUN BOOK FOR ALL DOG LOVER'S!.......2005-12-07

Recipes are easy and fun to bake! My daughter and I loved to make the dog bones and our dog, Picasso, loved (and I mean LOVED!)his homemade treats. We baked up another batch to give to friend's dogs as Christmas presents.
We recommend this book as a gift to yourself or someone else.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars several species offer theraputic effects on humans.......2007-02-12

Seeing eye dogs for the blind are the best known example of animal assisted therapy. But this book describes several other cases, that are perhaps not so familiar. Like the theraputic effect on humans of watching a fish tank. Or interacting with chimpanzees. Or, in some instances, with snakes. The book describes how for many people, there is a stress reduction effect of touching these animals.

Other aspects covered in the book include listing stress signs in dogs or cats. As possible warnings that they might not be useful as companions. Another topic is the difference between a child and an adult having a pet companion.

The book is a good guide for those health care professionals seeking to match animals with humans.

3 out of 5 stars Animal Assisted Therapy.......2006-11-13

I found it to be a helpful resource. I will probably refer back to it as I continue learning about animal assisted therapy.

5 out of 5 stars Credible, clinical but enjoyable-A Keeper.......2002-06-26

This tome features a number of various case study articles on different subjects pertaing to not only animal-assisted therapy, but also to service animals (there is a significant difference). One area (service animals)is for disabled individuals who have an animal-usually a dog-to assist them. The other area is for those interested in Biophilia, how clients benefit from exposure to animals from a therapeutic stance, where handlers bring their animals into long-term facilities, and the like.
I enjoyed this book so much I loaned my copy to a psychiatrist at a neighboring mental health clinc that I know who was conducting a group. She wanted to talk to them about the benefits of service animals for those with mental and emotional disorders, but didn't have the background on the subject. This book was indispensible for her. I plan to add more volumes like it to my library.

5 out of 5 stars Worth the Money.......2002-03-04

This book contains bonafide information to help AAT professionals in everything from forming a practice, zoonotic disease charts, guidelines for AAT in a variety of settings (hospitals, schools etc.), and with a variety of clients to Nature therapy and animal abuse issues.

Additionally, it offers information on assessment tools that can be applied to research in this area. It explains different statistical methods and how to use them.

This book is a 'must have' reference. It is encouraging to see good literature emerging in this field. As a practitioner in this area, I am encouraged by works like this.

5 out of 5 stars Extremely informative.......2002-01-26

The Hanbook on Animal-Assisted Therapy is a useful resource on the topic of anthrozoology and animal-assisted therapy. The sections of the book are written by many of the most prominant researchers in the field. The book is interesting, as well as informative.

5 out of 5 stars Take the Next Step in Excelling at Agility!.......2004-03-06

4-Paws up for book 2 in the Excelling at Dog Agility "series" by Jane Simmons-Moake!

This extraordinary guide takes you from beginner to intermediate using easy-to-follow text loaded with pictures, diagrams, and tons of sample exercises. Get started with straight line and simple turn sequences then move at your own pace to distance control and "side-switches." Simmons-Moake is extremely thorough in her method and emphasizes not striving for "good" but for excellence! Her method makes it practically impossible to fail. Some of the important topics in this book are the introduction of distance and control commands, gaining distance with her "distance circles" technique, and how to give correct body cues for accurate performance every time. She also touches on the controversial concept of "correction-free training." To top off a wonderful "curriculum" of doggy schooling, she includes several pages of exercises you can do with just a few obstacles to drill key elements or your dog's weaknesses.

A few other features I really enjoyed:
· LOTS of diagrams!
· Tips for solving problems like broken start-line stays
· Proofing ideas and exercises
· An entire chapter on every type of side-switch imaginable! (including rear-cross, front-cross, counter rotations, zig-zags, and more!)

...and for those who are agility instructors or thinking of teaching agility, there are sample lesson plans for a 6-week Beginners class, 8-week Intermediate class, and 6-week Intermediate II class.

I cannot stop praising this book! It has certainly improved the performance of my own dogs and allowed me to progress more quickly with proven techniques. It is the perfect addition to any agility lover's bookshelf!

    Book Description

This popular behavioral endocrinology text provides detailed information on what hormones are, how they affect cells, and how such effects can alter the behavior of animals, including humans. Presenting a broad continuum of levels of analysis, from molecular to evolutionary, the book discusses how genes work, the structure of cells, the interactions of endocrine organs, the behavior of individuals, the structure of social hierarchies, and the evolution of mating systems.

The second edition, while maintaining the strengths of the first edition, has been thoroughly revised to reflect recent developments in genetics and molecular biology and related social concerns. It contains four new chapters: on the use of molecular biology techniques in behavioral endocrinology, on psychoneuroimmunology, on hormonal influences on sensorimotor function, and on cognitive function in nonhuman animals.

5 out of 5 stars Essential for anyone who lives with a dog........2005-11-17

This is one of the best dog-training books I've read. I've had my Border Collie for 2 1/2 years and I've read several books, online articles, and even spoke with two different dog behaviorists and still managed to learn several things from Ms. Hodgson's book.

Scold the cookies, not the dog - what a great idea. Your dog gets the idea that the cookies are a bad thing & he should just leave them alone lest he be associated with them. He doesn't want you to think HE is bad, too!

    Love it.

Thank you, Ms. Hodgson - I'm happy to recommend your book to everyone I know who needs some advice on living with their canine companions.

5 out of 5 stars THE Best Dog Training Book!.......2005-01-15

I bought this book years ago, back in 1995, in it's first edition. Back then, I had a Siberian Husky who was more than difficult to train. I read the book and followed Sarah's advice on how to train my hard-headed and over-active pupil. It worked! Not only did it work, but it worked very well! The techniques in this book only took about 15-30 minutes of my time each day.

In the end, I was able to effectively train my dog, especially house train, in no time! I borrowed out the book and I never saw it again! I was overjoyed to see Sarah has released a second edition. I am getting a new puppy next month, and this is my book. I even found the first edition and bought that one as well! Thanks Sarah.

5 out of 5 stars WOW WOW WOW WOW.......2004-12-11

WOW WOW WOW WOW. This Is an incredible book, extremly useful, and funny. It really explains the dog's point of view, and how silly people can look sometimes.-don't take that personbally. If you have a dog or you are a dog trainer this book is a must!

5 out of 5 stars Every dog should come with this book........2004-02-25

Years ago when I worked in the grooming department of a pet store, we sold cases of the first edition of this book to customers who would ask us why their dogs "misbehaved." I thought that book was the best book ever written for dog owners. The second edition is much better.

The author speaks simply and with the compassion and knowledge that comes from her years of experience with dogs and their people. This book enables people to communicate effectively with the dogs in the household, so there is mutual understanding, and "training" becomes second nature.

It is useful, informative, easily referenced, and very readable. Even if you think you know dogs, you will learn from this book, and enjoy the reading. It is not overwhelming for beginners, either.

If you have a dog, buy this book, and then be prepared to have to buy 4 more copies because you keep "lending" it to friends and family.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for training your dog.......2000-08-06

This book seems to be an excellent book for training your dog -- big or small. The author takes you from trying to understand your dog, to simple things you should need to train your dog, the first basic commands, moving on to harder things. At the end the author also outlines a variety of items to discipline your dog if your dog has problems of barking, chewing etc.

Not only is the book detailed, but set up in a way that you can easily read. Lists are very helpful in this book. The book also has interesting antecdotes about the author's experience with dogs which are separated out so that people who don't want to read them don't have to read them.

The content is good to help because it doesn't limit your options to one way of correcting your dog, but gives other ideas for those of us who are only a little creative. The book even talks about what games are good to play and has given me a few ideas for games for me and my dog.

My only problem with the book is the plug for a specially designed leash that the author sells. It does sound like a good leash for a dog that is kept inside most of the time. My dog is mostly outside and so the training with the special leash doesn't look that practical to me.

I think the best part of the book is the constant encouragement to the dog owners. The author tells us that training a dog depends on our attitude and does everything possible to keep our attitude to be helpful for training our dogs. One of the better dog-training books I have found.

". . . among the most complete and best documented books on the subject of zoonoses . . . an extended, updated, and rewritten edition of an important manual which is used by many veterinary schools in Europe and North America." -Bulletin of the World Veterinary Association

This book represents a compendium on zoonotic and communicable diseases throughout the world. Among the 176 diseases covered, some are emerging zoonoses like Lyme disease, Rocio encephalitis, Oropouche fever, and Ebola disease. It notes the spread of the Rift Valley fever virus and the protozoan Cryptosporidium.

The book is divided into five parts on the basis of the etiologic agents' position in biological classification: bacterioses; mycoses; chlamydioses and rickettsioses; viroses; and parasitic zoonoses. Discussions of the 176 diseases cover information on synonymy, etiology, geographic distribution, occurrence in animals, the disease in man, the disease in animals, the source of infection, mode of transmission, the role of animals in the epidemiology, and disease diagnosis and control. Epidemiologic and ecologic factors conducive to development of the disease are emphasized. Also included are numerous maps, graphs, and illustrations that facilitate understanding of the transmission cycle as well as the geographic distribution of some of these diseases. This book answers the need for a reference text for schools of public health, medicine, and veterinary medicine, as well as by bureaus of public and animal health.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Superb reference on zoonoses.......2000-06-09

This book is a very comprehensive overview of zoonotic diseases organized by disease. It includes pertinent literature references for each pathogen, so that the reader is able to obtain the original reports by performing a bit of library work. It is broad in scope, and includes detailed information on zoonotic pathogens and the manifestations of zoonotic diseases in humans and in non-human animals. The book is also indexed well, which is very helpful.

The book should be updated to reflect the changes, especially in emerging zoonotic infections, that have occurred in the 13 years since its publication. As a result, readers will have to look elsewhere for information on disease due to (for example) Nipah virus, Hendra virus, Menangle virus, influenza A virus (avian-to-human transmission), and a number of recently described rickettsial diseases.

Nevertheless, despite this limitation, the book retains its appeal as an easy to use, comprehensive, and relatively inexpensive book on zoonotic infections.
