As an accomplished doctor of veterinary medicine, Martin Goldstein is well respected for his 25 years worth of experience in the field--experience he effectively utilizes in conjunction with his expertise in holistic medicine in his new book, The Nature of Animal Healing: The Path to Your Pet's Health, Happiness, and Longevity. Goldstein begins with a broad explanation of the origins of diseases in pets, then moves on to taking action against those diseases, not only offering thorough discussions of specific ailments--including cancer, allergies, and arthritis--and the holistic medicines available to help in the healing process, but also speaking to the "dubious legacy of vaccines" as well as the questionable quality of pet food. Finally, Goldstein turns his attention to the spiritual realm, addressing both the bonds that we have with our pets--and how those bonds aid in preventing and fighting our pets' health problems--as well as dealing with the death of a beloved pet. Goldstein's expert advice, inclusion of inspiring real-life cases, and thorough resource "compendium of holistic books, newsletters, Web sites, veterinarians, and associations" make this book a valuable addition to any pet owner's library. --Julia King
Book Description
The Nature of Animal Healing is a groundbreaking, inspirational contribution to animal care. Dr. Martin Goldstein, one of the most successful and best-known holistic veterinarians in the country, offers here, for the first time, invaluable insights into how to give our pets a healthy, happy, and long life.
Dr. Goldstein--a graduate of the Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine who runs a renowned clinic in South Salem, New York--begins by explaining his approach to alternative treatment: what it is, how it works, and why it's especially important that animals be treated holistically. Holistic pet care essentially revolves around the notion that the best way to cure an animal who is ill is to help the animal cure itself. We are not the true healers of our pets--they are. By treating the root of the problem instead of its symptoms, holistic medicine enables our pets to regain and maintain their own health.
In this comprehensive and accessible book, Dr. Goldstein not only shares his philosophy of how animals should--must--be treated, but also shows us exactly what to do. With moving and often entertaining examples from his years of practice, he offers prescriptive advice for the pet lover of every stripe: why we shouldn't feed our animals commercial pet food; why vaccines can actually do more harm than good; how acupuncture and homeopathic medicine can be used to help our pets; why pets need to experience a "healing crisis" in order to get well; and much, much more.
In his practice, Dr. Goldstein has had extraordinary success treating cancer and leukemia. Here, he begins to decipher the riddle of those killer diseases and shows us how best to treat them, as well as how to prevent them from occurring. Included is the exhaustive "Alphabet of Ailments," a list that tackles common afflictions one by one--the most useful guide ever published in a book on animal care.
Dr. Goldstein also turns to the spiritual realm, addressing how the emotional bonds we form with our animals have the power to provoke and cure disease. In his smart, helpful, and comforting style, he tells us how to deal with the inevitable death of a pet--both physically and psychologically.
Finally, there is an indispensable source guide: a complete listing of pet health-care centers, doctors, and products. So wherever you live, you will be able to act on the advice and recommendations you are sure to take to heart.
The Nature of Animal Healing is a revolutionary guide that no pet owner should be without.
Customer Reviews:
Excellant Book!!!!.......2007-10-01
This book truly makes alot of sense, and has opened a whole different perspective in pet health for me.I found it very hard to put this book down after I started reading it.I have to agree with other readers, that, you will never look at your pet's health and well being, the same again.Every pet owner should read this book!!!! I think it would make a really great gift for others as well.
A MUST READ!.......2007-09-16
This book is very informative,if just for reccommended feeding guidelines and vaccination awareness.Every cat and dog owner needs to read this and be aware of whats in our pets food.
Real Food for Pets!.......2007-08-23
From personal experience, I know Martin Goldstein is right on with feeding pets real food.
For years, my Pug struggled with crystals in her diet...both acidic and alkaline. She was put on different Hill's Prescriptive Diet foods.
She was also going blind.
Two years ago, I thought--enough of this crappy food--I want the rest of her days (at that time I thought very limited) to have more quality. I started to feed her free-range chicken and premium canned food (because I knew it was balanced.)
She's still eating it and is now a healthy, almost 14 year old Pug! (I have since added meatloaf from free-range buffalo, brown rice and grated carrots.)
Harmonious Environment: Beautify, Detoxify and Energize Your Life, Your Home and Your Planet
a must have for all pet owners!.......2007-07-09
Dr. Goldstein's book truly changed the way I care for my companion animals. It sheds light on a new approach to caring for your pets. I found it very readable and clear. I especially liked the information on diet, and made changes to my pets foods that have already caused positive changes in their health. I recommend it uncondtionally.
Would be 5 stars, but the formatting stinks.......2007-07-07
I love this book. I use it frequently. I agree with all the wonderful praise in all the other reviews here. So, why do I give it only four stars? SEE THE NEXT PARAGRAPH.
A word of warning. If you're looking for a particular company or product or vet or animal-related anything in the Resource Guide, be prepared to spend a long time thumbing through twenty-eight poorly-formatted pages. The cutesy fonts are irritating. The lack of clearly defined headings is inexcusable. I finally marked every page with a heading of my own: VETS, ANIMAL COMMUNICATORS, HERBS, FOOD and so on.
Also, I found only one website listed in the entire Resource Guide (Goldstein's own, I might mention). Hopefully any further editions of this book will update the contact information.
Bottom line -- This is truly a book every dog or cat person should own and use. I believe what Marty Goldstein says. I even quote him in my books. I know my cats are healthier as a result of my using THE NATURE OF ANIMAL HEALING. Just beware the final pages.

Customer Reviews:
Fantastic book to teach a beautiful lesson!.......2007-05-16
All of Madonna's books have a message. This one is about giving to others and that is how you find true happiness. My daughter is 6 1/2 and all of Madonna's books have been on her 'favorites' list for over a year now. We give this book as a birthday gift to all of her 6 and 7-year old friends. The illustrations are like beautiful masterpieces from a museum, and the message is strong.
I don't just recommend this book (especially for girls...although the message is valid for boys as well) but ALL of Madonna's books. I originally doubted Madonna's ability to be a wonderful author, but once again, she rises to the occasion and does a fantastic job! My only regret is that she has only 6 books as I would love a series of her books like Seuss!
Get all of them!.......2007-01-21
These books are great for all children (and grown-up ones too!)...
A great read.......2007-01-11
We have bought all of the Madonna books and enjoy each of them but this is, by far, our favorite. Our 5 and 7 year old and I have so much fun reading it. I just love reading Losta's lines as they are written in English but with the Italian pronunciations. Our children laugh every time. The illustrations are gorgeous and there are many morals scattered throughout the book. It can be a bit preachy at times but the messages are all good.
books.......2007-01-10
I bought this book and the rest of madonna's books for my grandaughter . I love all Madonna's books.
Educational and fun.......2007-01-04
I read this to my daughter tonight, she is 4.5 and she loved it! She is more advanced in her vocabulary and understanding dialogue then others her age so this book was not too old for her. I always read with animation so using an accent for Mr. De Casha comes easy (one reviewer complained about). We enjoyed discussing it during and afterwards and the art is beautiful. I came to Amazon looking for the rest of her books which are in my cart right now! I would say it is more suitable for most older children (as it says in the description of the book) but it works for my daughter. I am excited to get the other children books in this series Madonna has written as they are entertaining and in addition filled with gorgeous art.
Book Description
Geneen Roth’s legions of fans have always responded to her humor and honesty, her warmth and savvy. Those qualities, so present in
The Craggy Hole in My Heart and The Cat Who Fixed It, take us deep into the story of a remarkable twenty-pound cat, Mister Blanche, and Geneen’s beloved father, Bernard, and the ways in which each taught her to love without reservation and to accept the fact that she might someday lose those whom she believed she could not live without.
In these remarkable, inspiring, and joyous pages, we discover along with Geneen how to break free of the same fears that may drive us to eat or drink or shop too much. Fear of being vulnerable, fear of death, fear of losing what we want most: These are the demons that can inhibit our ability to embrace life freely and fully.
Come meet Mister Blanche and the charming Bernard and immerse yourself in a poignant and funny story that is Geneen’s best. As her loyal readership already knows: It’s not about food, it’s not about the cat . . . it’s always been about love and how to live with it—and never live without it!
Customer Reviews:
One for your permanent library.......2007-04-29
A beautiful and engaging story, this memoir deals with coming of age, learning to accept and give love, coming to terms with parents, and death and dying. Geneen Roth masterfully writes about many of life's large universal themes and puts them together expertly into a cohesive whole. This story will stick with you. This book is one of those rare gems to keep in your permanent library, one that will surely unfold a different lesson and mystery each time you read it.
Worth re-reading over and over!.......2006-08-04
I love this book and I often re-read it. Funny and clever writing. Easy to relate to and written with heart!
Hope for those who have suffered a loss.......2006-07-12
Parents, like all humans, are imperfect. When they die, we sometimes recall events, actions, and issues that make us question why we may have ever thought they loved us. Pets, on the other hand, come with no strings attached. They love unconditionally and are a source of joy that is boundless. Geneen covers losing both in the funny and touching book, which may offer healing and hope for those who have lost either.
Narcissistic woman, narcissistic family, but the cat is nice........2006-06-10
I was extremely disappointed with this book. It has a great title and the concept of someone who loved neither cats nor herself learning to live with both interested me.
Lo and behold, Geneen Roth spends less than a page describing her antipathy to cats. She gets Blanche, suddenly he's ten years old, and there's no description of how she came to accept something she formerly disliked.
Her description of herself as an overweight, selfhating shopaholic (there are many, many mentions of earrings) is followed by a description of her immediate marriage to an apparent saint. Ms. Roth spends most of the book describing how successful, rich, and spoiled she is--how many people get Zen masters and acupuncture treatments for their cats?--but the greater part is spent on describing her neuroses and her father, pretty much in that order.
Ms. Roth is apparently stung that her father left his money to his wife rather than to her and her brother. If she truly loved her father she'd not have expected anything; after all, his medical treatments were 'only' half a million dollars. His wife is described as working as a secretary. Why does a millionaire's wife work? Possibly because she needs to for financial or personal reasons? In any case, Daddy's money was his, not hers, and he probably felt that Ms. Roth had enough on her own, while the wife needed it more.
This is a self serving tale of a very privileged woman who likes to write about herself. I would have appreciated hearing more about the cat.
Wonderful and tearjerking read.......2006-05-14
This book was absolutley wonderful! It pulls at your heart and really makes you think. I recommend it to everyone. Geneen has a great way with words. I have enjoyed some of her other books as well such as Appetites and When You Eat at the Refrigerator Pull Up a Chair.

This book is the best.......2007-07-13
I got this book for myself and my daughter immediately fell in love with it and walked off with that copy but I like it so much that I bought another copy for myself that I will hide. This is a wonderful book; the pictures and the captions are incredible. A must-have for anyone that loves cats or even remotely likes kittens or cats.
Great photography, ADORABLE kittens.......2007-06-08
This book is one that you can flip through again and again. Not only are the kittens absolutely adorable to look at, but the photographs are so well done that it's impossible NOT acknowledge how talented Rachael Hale is. It is sure to make a great gift for anyone and everyone, no matter what the occasion is. With those precious little kitties captured in the cutest of moments, paired along with fantastic quotes leading you towards a happier life, how can you go wrong?
I'm not one for coffee table books but WOW this one is so cute!.......2007-03-20
-- Absolutely irresistible.
I bought this on a whim through a book club offer and am so happy I did. It is soooo wonderful. The photos aren't just *cute* but also well-shot. They have an artistic bent -- not just another cute kitties book -- and are very uplifting. The author pairs heart-melting photographs of kittens (mostly 6 weeks old) with day-brightening quotes from various authors and philosophers.
For some reason, looking at their happy little furry faces never gets old, and never fails to put a smile on my face. This is a wonderful book to get and to share with the other animal lovers in your life. :-)
the kittens are wise.......2007-03-08
This is a delightful coffeetable book, perfect for moments of reflection. Who can resist adorable kitten photos? Paired with philosophical quotations to lift and inspire, soothe and console, it's a heartwarming book for many moods and serves as a reminder that we should slow down and take notice of the little joys in life.
a good way to occupy your spare time.......2007-02-05
If you are a cat person, as i clearly am, you will find this to be an absolutely adorable collection of pictures... For what it is it is great.. If you have some spare time passing through the bookstore - page through this one..

Book Description
From the man who pioneered the concept of feelings-based animal care-a revolutionary work about animal moods and emotions that shows us a totally new way to view and care for the beloved pets who share our lives. In this ground-breaking work, veterinarian and animal theorist Dr. Frank McMillan uses a wide variety of examples from his own practice with scores of scientific studies to construct a striking-and extraordinarily logical-depiction of the way your pet's mind works. Dr. McMillan presents a comprehensive look at how physical and emotional feelings are at the controls in guiding your animal's actions, from wanting to go for a walk to hiding from the vacuum cleaner to limping on a sore leg. Understanding the importance of your pet's feelings, according the Dr. McMillan, is the key to unlocking the animal mind. Dr. McMillan shows readers: What the Pet Pleasure Principle is and why your pet wants you to always use it as your main guide in caring for him or her Why feelings are the only things that your pet cares about How profound an influence the mind has on every aspect of an animal's health The importance of the Comfort Zone and how to help your pet reach it and stay in it Why boredom can be devastating to your pet's emotional health and how to relieve it What "stress" really is and how to give your pet the tools to deal with it in his or her life Why the best veterinary medical care is based on your pet's feelings Why a Safe Haven is the single most important factor for your pet's emotional well-being How to determine your pet's quality of life and ways to maximize itFor the 152 million people in the United States living with pets, Dr. McMillan explains why understanding your pet's feelings is essential for making every decision affecting his or her life, such as upbringing, conflicts with other animals, health care, and even the heartbreaking choice of euthanasia. He shows how feelings-based care offers your pet the greatest 20opportunity to enjoy the happiest, healthiest, and most emotionally fulfilled life possible.
Customer Reviews:
Unlocking the Animal Mind.......2006-03-16
I agree with Dr. McMillan's theories as I have observed first hand much of what he says in his book. I applaud his attempt at educating people to the fact that animals do have feelings which should be acknowledged, respected, and addressed along with their physical needs. Overall, I found the book interesting reading, though it was somewhat repetitious. The stories and his encounters as a veterinarian, however, kept my interest, and I feel better informed for improving the quality of life of my pets and rescue animals. That was my intention. I do recommend the book for anyone who sincerely wants to better understand the animal world.
MUST READ for Pet Owners.......2005-07-29
I am a professional pet sitter/dog walker. I have found this to be an EXCELLENT book. I recommend it for any pet owner. It is easy to understand, and the author sights many examples to clarify his point. I think I will buy several more copies to give to some of my clients. PLEASE read this before you give up a "difficult" pet. Please read it if you love your pet and want to provide the best for them. Please read it if you are even considering getting a pet.

Augustus the tiger was sad. And he had lost his smile. So he did a huge tigery stretch and set off to find it. Stunning illustrations celebrate the beauty of the world and the simple happiness it brings us when we open our eyes to it. An imaginative book for children who love to explore the world around them.

Beautiful pictues in a feel good story.......2007-03-19
We checked this out of our library and my son LOVED this book. He asked us to read it everyday. The illustrations are gorgeous. Don't pass on this one.
Beautiful illustrations and meaningful story.......2007-01-08
This is one of my very favorite books for my three year-old daughter. How it escaped Caldecott recognition is beyond me - the illustrations are incredible, Asian-inspired works of art. Poor Augustus the tiger has lost his smile and sets off on a journey to find it, finally learning that it is always with him as is the joy and beauty in the world. Even my daughter understands the message, and we love reading it together. Highly recommend this book if you are in the mood for a change from some of the sillier (though still very good) kids books.
