Must Have.......2007-09-14
used as a textbook, but even if not would make an excellent companion to any elec mech class.
MEEB Bow Down.......2005-09-14
If you want to know more than most Architects and Engineers about how to design the guts of buildings this is the book to use. It's a fat guy though! Sometimes the text seems to weigh you down. Most architectural students consider it a sloug! But, once they graduate, they use it throughout their careers as design professionals. If you want to know how to develop a regional climatic response strategy for your building or development, calculate passive ventillation rates or heat gains and losses on unique configurations of wood, siding and insulation; size gutters or a rain water catchment system or plan for an elevator, this is the book for you.
review of Mechanical and Electrical Equipment for Buildings, 9th Edition by Ben Stein.......2005-08-29
This is the best reference for Architects and students studying mech. & elec. equipment
Best One-Volume Resource For Engineers.......2005-02-05
If you are an engineer engaged in the design of mechanical and electrical systems for commercial and institutional buildings, you may find this your most valuable reference for an overview of theory and best practices for the entire gamut of building systems.
I did find a bit too much enthusiasm for environmentally friendly and energy-conserving new ideas. Many of these technologies are worth following but have economic results that will not serve your clients well.
I am a professional engineer (leading my own firm) with 40 years of experience and have a huge library including the eighth and ninth editions of this book; it's one of my favorites.
It's must reading for a new engineer because you will be able to understand the basics of areas that are new to you with an hour or two of study.
An author's view:.......2002-01-26
My part of this book (mechanical and plumbing) is designed to first show how to minimize the need for mechanical equipment by designing with the climate and site firmly in mind. First configure a building to optimize daylighting, solar heating, and various climate-appropriate passive cooling methods. Also, to store rainwater when appropriate. Then, proceed to choose and size the back-up equipment. In this way, designers conserve non-renewable energy, utilize natural (on-site) energy sources, and also help building occupants stay in touch with the outdoors. I believe that we'll tend to care more about a clean outdoor environment if we are kept aware of its condition.
For a summary of this approach, read Chapter One. I hope you enjoy this book, even when it is your textbook! That was my object. Suggestions? I'm at jreyn@darkwing.uoregon.edu

Book Description
The search for clean, renewable energy sources has yielded enormous growth and new developments in these technologies in a few short years, driving down costs and encouraging utilities in many nations, both developed and developing, to add and expand wind and solar power capacity. The first, best-selling edition of Wind and Solar Power Systems provided the most complete and modern treatment of renewable energy. This second edition continues the tradition by offering updated and expanded coverage of this growing field. The book begins with individual sections devoted to wind power and solar photovoltaic technologies, their engineering fundamentals, conversion characteristics, operational considerations to maximize output, and emerging trends. The discussion of wind power includes the theory of induction machine performance and operation as well as generator speed control, while the solar PV section includes array design, environmental variables, and sun-tracking methods. This edition includes two chapters devoted to new and specialized technologies. The third section explores large-scale energy storage technologies, overall electrical system performance, and total plant economy while the final section explores ancillary power systems derived from the sun. Focusing on the complete system rather than on a single component, Wind and Solar Power Systems: Design, Analysis, and Operation, Second Edition offers the most comprehensive reference to all aspects of modern renewable energy systems.
Customer Reviews:
Great book!.......2001-02-01
This book is a lucid, up-to-date and comprehensive reference for theory and practical matters surrounding our two most viable alternate energy sources. Be careful though because the first edition has a few typographical errors, one or two in its derivations.
An excellent, comprehensive text.......2000-10-26
Very readable, and accessible, even to a non-engineer.
Great reference book...........2000-09-14
This is a good reference book on renewable energy sources. It is well organized and easy to follow, even for non-electrical engineers. As an environmental engineer, I have found it an excellent reference.

Book Description
Architects were once charged with designing entire buildings, including the HVAC, lighting and power systems. But with the advent of more complex technologies, engineers and other specialists became responsible for these systems, with architects assuming expanded roles as team managers. The latest edition of Building Control Systems provides architecture students with the larger picture without overwhelming them with details. In emphasizing a conceptual understanding of the functions of various systems and how they interact with building components, the book provides the exact information that tomorrow's architects will need to effectively communicate and coordinate with consultants in all of the many building disciplines. This revised Second Edition covers the theoretical bases for thermal control
the systems used to control the thermal environment within buildings
various electrical systems, including power and lighting
such building control topics as plumbing services and fire protection
and economics-based design decision making. Building Control Systems, Second Edition provides coverage of:
- New building designs that minimize our dependence on nonrenewable fuels and use only a "fair share" of renewable fuels with important steps toward cutting costs and preserving precious resources
- Such pressing environmental concerns as indoor air quality, "sick building syndrome," noise pollution, global warming, and depletion of the ozone layer and the impact on building design
- New technologies, including new passive thermal control systems designed to minimize energy consumption
- The latest building codes for architects and specialists on the design team
Thoroughly up to date, this book provides architecture students with theoretical information they must have as they assume the dual roles of designer and manager. This guide will also prove to be a useful on-the-job tool for architects, designers, builders, developers, contractors, beginning HVAC designers, and building managers.

Customer Reviews:
Clearly written and understandable.......2000-07-15
Very happy with this purchase. It is loaded with clear discussions of basic home wiring concepts and very good diagrams. Easy to understand and find what you're interested in.
One thing to keep in mind, there is only so much detail and instruction you can get from this kind of book. For code-related questions or more complex wiring, it gets (by necessity) vague and generalized. Not suprising considering the complexity of national and local codes. Still, for someone trying to understand their home wiring, troubleshoot it, or plan basic projects, I think it's a good buy.

Customer Reviews:
Mechanical and Electrical Systems in Buildings (3rd Edition).......2007-02-15
This book is terrible. If you are a certified HVAC specialist, it is for you. However, if you are new to this then it is a total waste of money. Explanation is bad, example are nowhere relate to the section discussed. And worst of all, there is no answer keys. You will not have a clue if you are correct or not. Every chapter there are as least half of the review question are calculations, yet in each chapter there will be probably one page showing how calculation is done. Example one of the simplest thing:
COP = Cooling Effect / Power Input. If you look up the index, you cannot find the word "cooling effect", find out whichever chapter they discuss, or show you how to calculate the "cooling effect".
You are in luck if you do not have class that uses this book. You have bad luck if you have a "good" teacher that using this book. You are doom if you have a "bad" teacher who using this book, might as well drop it. Waste of time and money.
Mechanical and Electrical Systems in Buildings, 2nd.......2003-06-20
Very good book. Helps you understand the systems inside (and outside) of buildings in use everyday that most folks don't have a clue about. If you are interested in understanding how your building equipment functions this is a good book for you. Down to earth and well written. Recommend to property management personnel.
Great book for newbies!.......2001-05-02
If ur stepping into the building services industry, this book will be a comprehensive packaged info for your reading pleasure. Includes lotsa real-life diagrams, plan routings, concepts and explanation. It's 4am over here in Singapore and I've just finished reading one of the topics, just imagine how attractive the contents this book has! However, the only and regretable drawback is: the units are empirical which make it very difficult for me for in my country, we use SI metric units.
