Book Description

This is THE reference text for lactation consultants. In its third edition, the text has been updated to reflect new knowledge in the physiology of breastfeeding, milk supply, positioning, the management of breastfeeding, and the role of the lactation consultant. The text is divided into 5 sections that cover the sociocultural context of infant feeding, anatomy and biological imperatives, the prenatal, perinatal and postnatal periods, beyond postpartum, and contemporary issues. It is accompanied by a CD-ROM and color insert, both of which accurately depict positioning, the normal breast, and breastfeeding problems.

I love this book. It's well organized and easy to read even though some info is quite technical. I'm taking the IBCLC exam soon and out of several books I'm using for review, this is my favorite.

5 out of 5 stars If I could give it ten stars, I would........2007-10-08

The book sold me on the photos alone, but the recipes do not disappoint. Never has vegan baking been so invisibly delicious, so perfectly dressed up as the richest, most indulgent lacto-ovo baking, totally indetectable to those not in the know. I've made the vanilla (vegan cream cheese frosting), chocolate (peanut buttercream), pineapple (pineapple topping), tiramisu (holy crap), pistachio rosewater (with rosewater buttercream), and dulce sin leche cupcakes (with a squirt of my own coconut caramel in the middle, lemony buttercream, toasted coconut, and caramel doodads on top). Every single cupcake has been moaning-aloud-in-obscene-pleasure delicious. The rise is perfect, the crumb is tender and soft without a trace of the gumminess associated with vegan baking, and the frostings are pure sin (or heaven, whatever). I've had to hide this book from myself to stay focused on school and stop making cupcakes already.

5 out of 5 stars Vegan Cupcakes Take Over the World! They really do!.......2007-10-07

AWESOME book!
The recipes were very easy and I loved that for the few rare ingredients that were needed, easy to find alternatives were suggested. As for the taste? Several of these recipes beat normal cupcakes hands down anyday! If you're vegan, (even if you're not!) and are looking for some sweet treats, this is one sweet book you have to buy.
Very satisfied! Thank you!

5 out of 5 stars I COULD EAT THIS BOOK!.......2007-10-05

Buy this book now! DO NOT HESITATE! It is perfect! I even have a cupcake tattoo of one of the cupcakes! The coconut lime! It's to die for! The chocolate stout cupcakes amazed everyone, and they are perfect if you are in a pinch and don't have time to make frosting! My kids flipped over the cookies & cream cupcakes! I am anxious to try the pumpkin choc. chip for fall. The green tea cupcake would be so perfect for a bridal, or baby shower, they're so elegant. The next one I will try is the Brooklyn vs. Boston cream pie, they have a creamy custard filling! If you LOVE cupcakes YOU WILL LOVE THIS COOKBOOK!!!! It doens't matter if you are vegan or not, that would be a ridiculous reason to shun this book. People CANNOT TELL THE DIFFERENCE!!!! Plus, they are about a million percent HEALTHIER!

4 out of 5 stars Yum.......2007-10-05

This book is fabulous! So far I've only made the basic chocolate cupcakes with the chocolate ganache frosting, but they were awesome. I am looking forward to making all of these cupcakes.

5 out of 5 stars Vegan Cupcakes will rock your world!.......2007-10-02

Amazing! So far I have made the Gingerbread and Vanilla cupcakes which were treated with rave reviews from my initally dubious friends/cupcake critics.
The vegan vanilla cupcakes are far superior to non vegan cupcake recipes- including the one from a famous cupcake bakery that cannot be named(rhymes with Pagnolia)
If you love your cupcakes buy this book whether you are vegan or not-
nothing is better than delicious AND cruelty free cupcakes!

5 out of 5 stars GREAT BOOK.......2007-06-11

As a new mom, I was very paranoid to ingest any medicines. This book informed me of all medications, AND vitamins. I was looking for a book that also contained herbs. This one has a few, and a good rating system. Very clear, and layperson terms.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent information.......2007-06-11

Dr. Hale is the foremost authority on medications and breastfeeding. This book also contains pregnancy categories. A great deal of information is presented and well organized. Written so as to be readable by laypeople.

5 out of 5 stars Useful while nursing.......2007-05-13

This is used by the lactation consultants. I purchased for my own personal use. Very helpful and easy to read.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, user-friendly reference.......2007-04-10

As a busy Women's Health NP, I have used other texts on medication use in pregnancy and during lactation, as well as Dr. Hale's website. I find this book enormously helpful in my practice. It is clear and concise, as well as being very comprehensive. It is great to bring into the exam room to review the information with the patient.

5 out of 5 stars essential for breastfeeding counselors.......2007-02-01

Dr. Hale's book is a must-have for breastfeeding counselors and anyone else who works with pregnant or breastfeeding mothers.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good book for people who like to try new things.......2007-05-31

"Feast Without Yeast" was necessary for me since not only do I have CRS but am also extremely allergic to yeast. However, because I was sick for three years before doctors realized what was wrong, my body (or my mind) learned to dislike 'new' foods in fear of becoming ill.

This book is fantastic if you're not a picky eater, or if you don't like eating the same dozen items over and over again. I appreciated the depth in which the author discussed the reason he write this book, and am glad it's on my shelf for reference!

5 out of 5 stars Feast Without Yeast.......2007-05-15

I was so happy to find yummy salad dressings in here that will work for me. I have to cut down on fruit and eat more veggies, but I couldn't have vinegar or dairy. This pretty much eliminates all the store bought dressings. I like the garlic tomatoe dressing. It was really easy and very good. There are a lot of great receipes if you suffer from systemic yeast, although those who are very severe need to stay away from the receipes with clover honey in them.

5 out of 5 stars No longer a drudgery.......2007-01-10

This guide is so chock full of great information and useable recipes for the yeast free needy. More and more people are finding serious allergies to yeast, wheat, and milk, the very foods we find challenging to avoid. Lots of wonderful recipes to try also.

3 out of 5 stars Good For Someone That Knows Something About Candida.......2007-01-05

Because if you DON'T know anything about Candida, you would not be able to avoid the pitfalls of the "avoid" foods that are mentioned in this book.

Proceed with caution and always listen to your own body where this book and its recipes are concerned. Not sure I would recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars This book is just what I needed........2006-05-20

I've seen some bad reviews of this book, but those people must not have needed it as badly as I did. I found this book after working through my chronic yeast infection for a year.
The authors make it relatively easy to start eliminating problem foods from your diet, working your way through the process as far as needed. I happen to be one of the 'bad' cases. I can't even eat everything on the strictest level-- #4.
The recipes are 'real', things that somebody with problems could eat. Almost all the recipes are uncomplicated (only a few being detailed), many very easy, and straightforward. Many could be considered 'fast food' if you have a crockpot or can handle leftovers remade. Many recipes help you understand how much of certain fresh herbs to use, too.
This book is valuable for those who are serious about this topic. I appreciate it very much.

4 out of 5 stars What's to eat? The Milk-Free, Egg-Free, Nut-Free Food Allergy Cookbook.......2007-09-11

My grand daughter is allergic to all dairy products and tree nuts. I did not know what to fix her for meals or desserts. This book really tells me all kinds of food available for anyone who are allergic to above mentioned. It is not difficult to prepare all recipes on this book . I am glad I found this cook book. Thanks to the author.

4 out of 5 stars Very good cookbook for those with food allergies.......2007-05-15

This book has a ton of recipes. I've only tried a few, but they were each very good. My 2 year old son is allergic to eggs, milk and peanuts so this seemed like the perfect cookbook for us. The only problem is that he's at a very picky age right now, so most of these recipes he won't have anything to do with at this time. Some desserts and cookies are all I've made so far that he'll eat. I think as the years go by we'll get a lot more use out of this book.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book!.......2007-05-13

This cookbook is absolutely fantastic! It's so nice to have a cookbook that suits my daughter's dietary restrictions exactly, without having to substitute this or that. So far, I've tried only a handful of recipes, mostly cakes and cookies, but all were easy to make and delicious! Highly recommended!

4 out of 5 stars Helpful for an Allergic Family.......2007-05-10

This cookbook has been helpful when looking for ideas to serve my family and guests.

5 out of 5 stars BEST ALLERGY COOKBOOK!.......2007-04-12

This cookbook has made such a difference in my life! I am an allergy mom that was in desperate need to feed my son who has severe egg and peanut allergies. It is so nice to have such a variety of foods, dinner, breakfast, snack, desserts, etc that my sons can enjoy that are completely safe. And totally yummy! This Cookbook is the best out there!

5 out of 5 stars Essential reading.......2003-09-23

This should be required reading for any physician caring for the breastfeeding mother or the breastfed baby. With all of the mythology surrounding breastfeeding and the wide range of advice given to nursing mothers, it is essential that practitioners give accurate, informed advice. Reading this book will allow health care professionals to do so.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent and educational for the medical profession.......2003-08-19

As a gynecologist based in Spain, I found this book extremely helpful while counseling my patients about breastfeeding, and while breastfeeding myself. I think most obstetrical textbooks do not cover enough the aspect of breastfeeding, and numerous questions remain to be answered, some as simple as: both breasts or one breast?. These simple questions, however, are an important source of stress to new mothers. Apart from that, the more "medical" aspects of the book are also exceptional. A must for all medical professionals involved in pregnancy, birth and infant care.

5 out of 5 stars Breastfeeding: A Guide for the Medical Profession.......2002-03-21

I am a IBCLC and work in a NICU with very small premature &/or sick newborns. As a nurse I very frequently use Dr Lawrence's book when there is a conflict with a doctor over the care of our breastfeeding babies. Dr Lawrence's book is compleatly research based and written with authority --- no touchy/feely all professional. It is a great book to use to study for the lactation exam !!! Get the newest copy date you can find -- doctors respect new information.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Reference for Medical Professionals and Mothers.......2000-10-21

This is an amazing text that answers almost every question the reader or a patient can bring to the table. Easy to read with good references. This is a must have for anyone who treats lactating women. As a mother I found the book to be very helpful, as a medical professional this book has been an excellent reference when treating lactating women. Definitely 5 stars!

5 out of 5 stars Breastfeeding: A Guide for the Medical Profession.......2000-07-26

I am a Registered Dietitian and have promoted breastfeeding to women for years. It wasn't until I became a breastfeeding mother that I wanted to be more informed on the subject. This book provides the how and why on specific benefits of lactation. If you do not have a medical background, be aware that there is a great deal of medical language. I am very pleased with my purchase.

Book Description

This one-of-a-kind guide to balancing motherhood and work is based on actual journals kept by a group of IBM women during their visits to the company's employee lactation room.

It all began when IBM manager Cate Colburn-Smith sat down in the company's employee lactation room, shed a few silent tears, and wrote the following on a paper towel: I'm a new mom and today is my first day back at work. Is anyone else using this room?

Right away women responded, and the paper towel was eventually replaced by a series of notebooks, in which women offered one another advice and support on juggling work and a newborn. Based on the original notebooks, The Milk Memos is a heartwarming, encouraging (and often hilarious!) guide to working motherhood.

It's one of the most existential moments any woman will face: sitting in a small room tucked away in the bowels of your company, pumping breast milk for a child so close to your heart-yet, at that moment, so far away. The Milk Memos records the voices of mothers who, while struggling with the difficulties of blending their two lives, prove that women don't have to choose between work and family. Their thoughts on how it can be done will inspire women everywhere. This invaluable book weaves the actual Milk Memos journal entries with information-packed sections on such topics of great concern to working moms as:

- finding a private place to pump breast milk at work and establishing a routine that you can maintain despite your busy workday;
- establishing the right daycare solution;
- getting a decent night's sleep with a new baby so that you can shine (or at least glimmer!) during business hours; and
- negotiating flextime, part-time, or a job share with an employer.

The ultimate gift for any new mom who will soon return to work, The Milk Memos is destined to become a classic on the parenting shelf.

5 out of 5 stars Really hit home!!.......2007-09-28

I really can't say enough good things about this book. As a breastfeeding mom who just returned to work a few days ago, this book was a godsend. I've never read a book that was so informative, touching, and hilarious rolled all into one. It helped me to be prepared for the difficulties of working and pumping that I would face, and helped me to get organized enough to make sure I had everything I needed to make working and breastfeeding a success. It EVEN gave me the courage and information needed to request (and receive!) a place to pump privately at my workplace when I had previously thought that I was going to be resigned to pumping in the women's bathroom. I also appreciated the book's non-judgemental tone: it presented breastfeeding as the best-possible solution for feeding our babies but it did not scoff at those women who find themselves struggling with it (as many of us have) or not interested in doing it long-term.

5 out of 5 stars A must read for nursing moms .......2007-07-30

Like other reviews says, it's an absolute must read for nursing moms. When I read it I felt as if I were reading my own life/feelings. The book will make you smile, laugh, and cry.

5 out of 5 stars Milk Moms Unite!.......2007-07-09

I am a working, milking mom. I read the Milk Memos while pumping at work and love it. This book has made me laugh out loud and brought tears to my eyes. It puts into words so much of what I (and other new moms I imagine) are feeling once we return to work after maternity leave. I read the book every day while pumping and feel that I am part of the milk club! 3 out of 5 stars Just so-so.......2007-06-22

I was hoping for a cookbook that had a lot of recipes I could use. Unfortunately there were very few in here that the average person would eat. I'd give better examples, but I gave it away to a friend. To touch on the dairy free wheat free examples. I don't believe this was written by a person who has celiac or is lactose intolorant. I may be wrong. It appears to be an eating your way clean, which is what the title says. So, it is to detoxify your body. It does have stickers in the cookbook to ask to replace the whey with soy products and spelt can be tolorated by many people who can't have wheat. I CAN eat spelt, not wheat. My husband CAN'T have any gluten. There is a difference. If your problem is JUST wheat...it might not be an issue, if it is gluten, don't eat spelt! Always check with your dr..... I was looking for a gluten free/dairy free cookbook. With this being a CLEAN eating book......the recipes were not overly appetizing.

4 out of 5 stars Tasty, easy to use recipes.......2006-11-15

I tried several of the recipes in this book and found them overall to be easy to prepare and tasty. I am intolerant to many ingrediants so, as always, I had to do some minor changes to the recipes - no one with food allergies or intolerances will ever find a perfect cookbook. Here are my reviews of some recipes:

Indonesian Chicken Curry - easy to prepare and very good. I used almond butter instead of peanut butter. My hubby ate 3.5 of the 4 chicken breasts!

Chicken & Cashew Stirfry - easy to prepare however mine turned out a little dry. I am not sure if I cooked the "sauce" too long of if I did something else wrong, but it is tasty enough for me to try again ;-) In this one I substituted almonds for cashews and olive oil for the peanut oil.

Ratatouille - this was good but made a huge amount and we tired of it before it was gone. I mistakenly got tamarind sauce instead of the Tapenade (I thought I buy it at the Whole Foods Market) but it was still good.

Spanish Rice with Black Beans - I did not like the spice combination on this one and I think it was the turmeric. I think I will try it again and change up the spices and try to find a way to keep it from being a little dry.

Spicy Thai Chicken Soup - I didn't use the homemade coconut milk and that was a mistake. Using Lite Coconut milk made it seem like it was missing some body. Also for this one a little advice on how to use lemon grass would have been helpful. I think I did it right but that could have been another problem with it. I will definately try this one again.

Black Bean Soup - Very yummy!! I enjoyed this one alot! Easy to make (I cooked enough beans for the Rice and this dish to save time) and tasty. I added diced tomatoes and added the rice and it was perfect!

I hope you guys find this useful and will add this cookbook to your collection.

5 out of 5 stars Good, easy recipes for the health-conscious.......2006-10-24

Like most cooks, I collect cookbooks that I think will be of use to me, and this is definitely one of the best. I like to cook with few ingredients and make tasty, healthy dishes quickly. As I also am allergic to wheat and like to eat as little dairy as possible, I love Lisa's recipes which omit both. She also specifies organics which I know are better for me. The liver-detox approach I find useful, as well. I don't eat many processed foods, and this book uses very few in the ingredient lists: this is a major plus. I do prefer Stevia to xylitol, however, but that is an easy substitute. I recommend this book to all cooks!

5 out of 5 stars Great resource with lots of healthy options.......2006-10-02

This book is great. I am at a point in life where I am facing some health questions due to my diet, and Ms. Allen's "Eating Clean" has helped me answer them. I didn't realize until recently that wheat (or gluten) is a problem for a lot of people. These recipes allow me to address the problems caused by both wheat and dairy, which are so common in so many foods.

Tasty alternatives or substitutes are hard to come by. Not only does "Eating Clean" provide those, its straightforward approach gave me -- someone who has always had to work at being comfortable in the kitchen -- the encouragement to make them myself. My headaches and other symptoms have since disappeared, and I am grateful for this book. It is a wonderful resource, and I hope that Ms. Allen writes more of them.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Healthy & Easy Recipes!.......2006-09-20

I am a vegetarian so I read this book with some apprehension. But I found a number of recipes that I could prepare and eat just as they were written! And many others are easily transformed into vegetarian meals by substituting tofu for the recommended meat, or just leaving protein out of the recipe. I can't wait for cooler weather so I can try some of the yummy soups!
The recipes I have tried are delicious and easily prepared, most with easily found ingredients.
I was pleased with Dr. Thry's comments and found them to be very helpful.
I highly recommend Eating Clean for anyone interested in eating healthier without giving up delicious food.

5 out of 5 stars Allergy Self-Help Cookbook.......2007-06-06

I truly thought my doctor was nuts when she asked me to try eating the "elimination/allergy diet"...no wheat, dairy, egg, corn or sugar. This cookbook saved me totally. Good recipes and a great springboard for developing the lifestyle to feel better. It is also called an "anti-inflammatory diet", and has helped my fibromyalgia significantly. Money very well spent. Highly recommended for those trying to change eating habits, feel better or lose weight.

1 out of 5 stars Misleading Name for your book.......2007-05-13

I was VERY disappointed when I received your book, the title indicates that the recipes are wheat-free....etc. In actuality some of the recipes are wheat free, some are milk-free, some are egg free, some are corn-free, etc. I was (past-tense) excited when I saw your book, as my daughter and I have to avoid these ingredients plus many more and I was tired of "making up" recipes on my own, I thought finally someone has done the footwork for me, however I was sadly mistaken, I have to modify theses recipes as much as my own, so I'll continue on my own.
Signed,

Disappointed in Wyoming

5 out of 5 stars Great for multiple food allergies.......2007-02-19

I am allergic to 11 different foods. This is the best book I have found so far to deal with MULTIPLE food allergies. This is not a book for the person with one or two allergies. This is the book for those of us who have to read every label every time. This book is worth the investment for those of us who really have a very difficult time eating at any restaurant and really need to cook at home. The recipies are diverse and include possible subsitutions and are tasty too!

5 out of 5 stars Very helpful.......2007-01-10

This book has alot of helpful information as a beginner with the food allergen subject.

3 out of 5 stars Best for food 'sensitivities' and rotation diets.......2007-01-02

This is a good cookbook, with many excellent ideas and some very interesting information. Unfortunately, Marjorie's desire to help every special dieter creates a book without a specific focus. She attempts to cover all types of food allergies (milk, egg, soy), intolerances (gluten, milk), sensitivities (including a rotary diet plan with food families chart and alternatives for things as obscure as black pepper), and even addresses issues on environmental allergens and toxins. No easy feat I must admit.

If your primary concern is food `sensitivities', this cookbook appears to be an excellent resource for rotary / rotation diets. I would recommend it for this. Yet, the subtitle declares `free of ALL common food allergens.' This is a big promise, and regrettably not one that it kept. Here are the author's claims:

Gluten-Free - There are many gluten-free recipes (breads, cookies, etc.) included and even a great section that explains all of the different flours and how they can be used. However, several of the recipes call for spelt, kamut, or oat products, which all contain gluten.
Wheat-Free - I did not view any recipes that contained wheat specifically, but I believe spelt and kamut are in the wheat family and a problem for many who have an allergy to wheat.
Yeast-Free - Of course, the quick breads, cookies, and other common dishes are yeast-free, but the few `yeast' bread recipes that are included did call for yeast.
Milk-Free - Many of the recipes call for goat milk, goat cheese, sheep milk, soy cheese (not specifying that most soy cheeses contain milk protein), and/or feta cheese (from a cow). The author fails to point out that most people who have a cow's milk allergy will also have a problem with goat milk, and some may even be more allergic.
Sugar-Free - This book is not suitable for someone who has sugar-free needs. Agave nectar, maple syrup, date sugar, and honey are required in many of the recipes. She does include a nice section explaining these natural sweeteners.
Soy-Free - I spotted soymilk, tofu, miso, and tamari sauce throughout this book.
Egg-Free - The quick breads are made with a natural alternative, and the author offers many great suggestions for replacing eggs in recipes. Nonetheless, a few egg-filled recipes did sneak in, including Macaroons and Eggs Florentine!
Corn-Free - I didn't spot any corn in this cookbook, though I am not certain how common of an allergen this is.

Other Diet Comments:
Vegan - One reviewer said this book is great for vegans, but I highly disagree. I don't think any vegan would want a cookbook loaded with recipes for turkey, chicken, pork, fish, venison, lamb, and even rabbit, simply because it has some good vegan recipes in it. Most cookbooks do.
Nuts - Marjorie does not claim that this book is nut-free, but she does state `free of all common allergens.' Tree nuts are one of the top 8 food allergens, but this book is loaded with nut-filled recipes. It did appear to be peanut-free though.
Fish & Shellfish - This is also a top 8 offender. As it is easy to prepare bread, dessert, rice, and other dishes without these ingredients, the book is mostly fish free, but there are specific fish recipes.

For those who have multiple allergies (such as the dreaded milk, egg, nut combo), picking and choosing recipes from this cookbook, could be a chore. I have had this cookbook for a couple of years now, but have only trialed a few of the recipes (with decent results). I would like to sample more, but I have found it too time-consuming to locate recipes that are suitable to my diet, that sound good at the moment, and that I have the ingredients on hand for.

The Allergy Self-Help Cookbook offers many great concepts and what sound to be some delicious recipes. If the author could either break this rather large collection (yes, I think there are 350!) into smaller focused cookbooks, create an index for the book that tells which recipes are specifically gluten-free, soy-free, milk-free, etc., or simply include allergy information after the title for each recipe (so that you didn't need to scan all of the ingredients), it would be a huge improvement.

5 out of 5 stars Great resource!.......2007-02-08

This is a great resource to have for travelling. I love the tabbed setup that makes it easy to get to the section I need. Obviously a lot of thought was put in to making the book (with an amazing amount of info.) as easy to use as possible.

It is obvious that a great deal of thought and experimentation has been put forth in the making of this valuable resource!

After being gf (and other things free) for 5 years, I appreciate the resource as it will make it far more possible for me to visit Italy (and other countries in my future) maintaining my health as much as possible along the way! Well done!

I have dining cards and they work quite well, but the next time I travel, I will be packing this book to take as well, without a doubt!

4 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Resource For Dining Out Gluten Free.......2007-01-25

Eating when you're away from your own home is always a challenge when you are on a special diet.

In "Let's Eat Out!" Koeller and La France have put together an impressive amount of information to make life easier for travelers and people who just want to eat out with family and friends.

I found the book a bit difficult at first because there is just so much content to sort out. It's definitely not a book to digest in one sitting!

I soon realized it really is a combination of broad reference guide and quick reference "cheat sheets." Once that became clear, it was much easier to scan and use the table of contents and index to find specific information. You can choose to just use the quick guides or go to the more detailed explanations.

All in all, the authors cover a very broad topic in an orderly fashion that makes it easy to locate information for a variety of situations. They use 7 common cuisine types, from American Steak and Seafood to Thai, to analyze the issues a diner can expect to face. They offer comments on the ingredients, the way food is prepared and on likely sources of hidden cross contamination.

After you read a couple of these, you begin to see the patterns and it would not be so difficult to apply the same process to another type of food. As they point out, it's all about educating yourself and learning what questions to ask.

Poring through their food/menu analysis, I discovered to my dismay that the item I had been selecting from a fast food restaurant most likely contains hidden gluten that I would not have thought to question. I did wonder why I didn't feel good every time I ate there!

Not only does the book cover information about individual foods, styles of cuisine, and 10 common food allergens, it also provides specific information about travel including contact information for individual airlines and the special diets they provide, contact information for associations and organizations in many parts of the world and even some translation phrases.

I'd recommend "Let's Eat Out!" as a valuable reference book. It's especially useful for those who frequently eat out or travel and even better, those who'd like to eat out more but have hesitated to take the risk. It could open up a whole new world.

The authors deserve the recognition that their book received as a Benjamin Franklin award finalist for 2006 in the Health (Wellness/Nutrition) category.

3 out of 5 stars For gluten intolerance and food sensitivities.......2007-01-20

"Let's Eat Out!" covers a very difficult topic, restaurant dining for people with food allergies and intolerances. For adults who should avoid top allergens due to mild to moderate food allergies and intolerances, this can be a very useful book. I have already referenced it a few times for some restaurant inspiration, outside of my usual Asian selections.

The book itself is stylishly laid out with color-coded chapters, strategically placed photographs, useful charts, and sample menus. It addresses ten of the most common food allergens: dairy, eggs, wheat, gluten (an intolerance), soy, peanuts, tree nuts, corn, fish, and shellfish.

It should be noted, that this book was written with celiac disease, multiple food "sensitivities", and gluten intolerance in mind. It may not be very appropriate for those who have life-threatening food allergies or severe intolerances. This is not to blame the authors. The various styles of food preparation combined with a high risk of cross-contamination in food service kitchens, make this a complicated area to address. Though, as one food allergy mom pointed out to me, the "Allergy-Free" title is a bit deceiving in this respect.

Also, for those who do have true food allergies, this book should not be used as a dining bible, but more as a suggestion based resource for further research and diligence. As someone who lives with a milk protein allergy, I unfortunately noted many errors with respect to the foods listed as "not containing the allergen." Guacamole (often made with sour cream), margarine (frequently contains lactose and/or milk protein), and sausages (many brands contain cheese) were just a few that caused me to raise the red flag. Your own questions and food label reading would still be required when utilizing this book.

Luckily, the authors do relay what questions to ask, and in many different languages. Kim Koeller has traveled extensively while living with multiple food allergies. This is well evidenced by the resources provided, including a multi-lingual phrase section and what seems to be a very useful airline guide. For those most interested in travel, the authors of "Let's Eat Out!" have also produced a "Multi-Lingual Phrase Passport" for food allergies that is pocket-sized. I thought this was a very handy little guide!

3 out of 5 stars Let's Eat Out!.......2007-01-09

Basically, it says be suspicious of EVERYTHING. As a Celiac, I am already. This book did not help me and I was disappointed but I can see how it might help someone newly diagnosed. Being vigilant is the key.

3 out of 5 stars Its OK...........2006-12-22

I was a little disapointed because many of the allergy graphs show gluten as possible, so that isn't much of a help, since that was already a given. I guess if you are looking for some where to START looking for gluten in your food, then this is a place to start. If you have been doing it for a while, then you really don't need this book....
