Book Description

This evocative collection by internationally acclaimed photographer Sally Mann is a masterful reinvention of the art of landscape photography. Sally Mann remains among the most innovative, talked-about, and daring artists working with a camera today. DEEP SOUTH is a much anticipated collection of her exquisite, ethereal landscape photographs, taken in the years since she rose to international fame with her groundbreaking book Immediate Family. The photographs in DEEP SOUTH, many produced with the 19th-century collodion process and a variety of toning techniques, capture what Mann calls the radical light of the American South. Borrowing methods favored by early masters of landscape photography, Mann bends classic craftsmanship to serve the expressive needs of a heightened contemporary sensibility. Serendipitous technical imperfections, such as light leaks or scratches on negatives, echo the accidental, chaotic workings of time. From ghostly images of historic battlefields to painterly visions of Louisiana, Mississippi, Georgia, and her native Virginia, Manns landscape photographs transport the viewer to another time and place.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Exquisite and Haunting Landscape Photography.......2007-01-12

Landscape photography has never spoken to me until this book. Sally Mann has created gorgeously abstract and ethereal images of the south and has coupled it with very eloquent text. It has forever changed the way I feel about landscape photography. If straight up landscape photography isn't your thing, by all means give this book a chance.

5 out of 5 stars moving photos .......2006-11-22

I am again deeply moved and awed by Sally Mann's work. Using older photo processes, combined with a deep seeing, these photos create a sense of place that I can feel as well as see. Ms. Mann also writes beautifully about these images and the people and place she is photographing. Though I shoot digitally, I am still inspired and in some ways try to emulate what I'm seeing here

I like the imperfections of these images, but if you want bright colors and tack sharp images, these my not be for you.

David.

5 out of 5 stars seeing through the opaqueness.......2006-04-25

whether this is Mann's best work it certainly is the most thought-provoking, when you think of the Deep South, you think of a place much like Stravinsky's Russia,Eastern Europa,or parts of New York State intolerant,class-orineted;superstitious,but also one that savors progess and the science of the image, the sensual, the evocative, but a place also defeated,Appomattox, that really has takened long to live with, in fact defeat is covered everyday in the macho-isms that has been part of popular strains in music.
The opaqueness-es of Mann's reveals a fascinating abstraction, touched daguertypes, I don't know the correct technical affiliation, and that takes you someplace,it has rails to take you someplace, but more like an archeologist for you do merely sit and stare, and examine closely; where you need to decipher the layers of history, meanings seems to be held in abeyance for now, suspended the layers of reference, and this might be difficult for someone who has not really lived in these places, in Virginia,Antietam and Manassas, but these are works of art nonetheless you return, Mann does draw you into her work; to again and again and you cannot say that for other of post-modern forms, yes these are manipulations as if Mann had lived herself in the Civil War,as a recluse held up in a forgotten city, as Knoxville or as the viewer had lived then and these are remnants of this discovery.
Her photos are of natural landscapes, spots, where the horizon quickly becomes blurred, it is not the sense of things to have perspective here, merely one image, one-dimensional,like her subject matter is some respects; yet placed with layers of hue, mists, nebuli and filigrees of time, durations and their ruins,we see decapying Greek columns, made of wood, with chipped paint, white of course, now deteriorating like those of an ancient time in the USA, but we know the time of here where we live, lost civilizations, or Persopolis.
Curious how you really cannot find these works beautiful unless you know something about history USA for that matter, and then their beauty is arresting for a moment;Mann's voice here speaks within a distance, like the faces of her children in her previous work, a voice once or twice removed, here a voice that has no resonance; or if you have followed the forms and shapes of the human spirit, you come to understand these photos. Mann has created a work that can stand alone in a void, they refer to a time, well no one today knows from real experience, perhaps Toni Morrison's "Beloved" has some resonance here but only from a great distance between her prose in parametrical time exposed as you read. Mann has found a way between representation and abstraction two of the paradigms of the 20th Century, the late Kirk Varnedoe had wanted to devote a study to this very subject, why the two have persisted throughout a century, or barely less than one. You also not only come to understand the South, but most places where such similar occurences have takened place. The American Civil War seems closer in a way, like these places are icons, yet not icons that form a critique with them, asking questions, there are no special spiritual places, here only where men have died, slaughtered along with mosquitoes and peaceful trees, Magnolias gently alive to witness the human condition.

5 out of 5 stars Transcendent Images.......2005-11-22

Mann is one of the very most gifted photographers of our time. In her landscape work, she finds the perfect marriage of technique and subject matter--marrying the processes of 19th-century photography and historic lenses to the subject matter of great sites of the South, the profound and mysterious ways in which site carries memory. In doing so she has created images that seem to derive from our own memories, carrying the ghostly presences of the past, embodying something we hold in our minds while adding something distinctly new as well. Mann's are transcendent, glorious photographs that should be examined and appreciated by anyone with a discerning eye for great work from our own time.

5 out of 5 stars Magnificent and complex.......2005-10-29

This is certainly Mann's best work. The landscapes seem destilled from both southern history as well as intimate and collective dreamworlds - both beautiful and intimidating. Look for a truly transcendental image that depicts a wooded landscape scarred by some kind of disaster. The image merges with the scarred emulsion of the glass plate to form a scull like shape that seems to expand into a fragment from and infinite outer space. An ambiguous, singular and extremely rewarding work of art.

    Book Description

In 250 glorious photographs Wide Angle: National Geographic Greatest Places documents the beauty and depth of every part of the world. Delving deeply into a picture archive that houses over ten million images, with many photographs being published for the first time, this new book-the third and final in the "greatest photographs" series-presents the world's amazingly diverse places with epic grandeur, unparalleled intimacy, romantic beauty, and gritty realism. The photographs are landscapes, cityscapes, famous landmarks, and unfamiliar spots that reveal special qualities of geography or culture one might otherwise never see.

Spanning more than eleven decades, the images in Wide Angle are divided into twelve chapters, each depicting a unique geography—including East and Southeast Asia, the Middle East, North Africa, and the Polar Regions. Each chapter is introduced by award-winning cultural writer and critic Ferdinand Protzman, whose essays accent the stunning photographs by renowned National Geographic photographers. Both essays and photographs carefully examine a region's special qualities, creating unique character and its own special and unforgettable sense of place. In Wide Angle, National Geographic photographers have recorded the world's places close up, in sweeping breadth, in depth, and over time.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars photo book.......2007-02-20

I bought this for my parents for a house warming gift. It is the typical high quality photography associated with National Geographic. Only weakness is that being so large it seems to not be bound extremely well. Has to be handled carefully. Very good.

4 out of 5 stars Good, could be better.......2007-01-23

There are many beautiful pictures in this book.
Some images are really impressive, have soul and cause emotions.
But the way the book was made somehow ruins those emotions.
Some of the best images are "interrupted" by the centerfold. Very poor positioning!
Because the book is so thick, you are unable to appreciate those pictures.
This kind of breaks the magic...
Don't they have a specialist to do this at NG?
The book should be larger, wider. Some pictures are unecessarily small, sharing half of a page with some uninteresting phrase/text.
I am still happy I bought it, it's a nice book and I really like many images, but it was poorely executed. Coul be soooo much better!
For this price, I still recommend it.

3 out of 5 stars Wowed to Blah.......2006-08-11

I went from being wowed to feeling blah about this book...it was like a rollercoaster...up and down. Some of the pictures...gorgeous...took my breath away and others left me quickly flipping through to the next page hoping to see something that captured my attention.

It wasn't what I was expecting in the fact that I was hoping that every single page would leave me meditating upon the picture before me, but still in my opinion it is a keeper as a large portion of the pictures are really stunning.

My other disappointment was the fact that when I think of "greatest places", well I don't really feel that that was captured in this collection of photography. Some of the pictures were random and just seemd poorly executed and the entire book didn't seem to mesh well.

The polar region photographs, which end the book, were perhaps the most disappointing which left me closing the book feeling let down.

2 out of 5 stars Why is the cost so reasonable?..........2006-07-07

...essentially you get what you pay for. This book is certanly NOT representative of what I have come to expect from National Geographic.

I had eagerly anticipated the arrival of my book, but was dissappointed to find within the first few pages that it is uninspiring at best. Most of the pictures are poorly executed and at times seem amateurish. In the past I've found photographs by professionals like Steve McCurry ('Portraits')visually arresting. Not so here.

At least it only cost me $20 oredering from Amazon. If I had been able to preview it beforehand, I would not have thought it worth even the discounted price.

    2 out of 5 stars Poor Execution.......2006-06-27

National Geographic Magazine is famous for their excellent photography; it is the very reason I picked up this volume. However, Wide Angle: National Geographic Greatest Places failed to live up to my expectations. I was underwhelmed not only by a large portion of the images, but mostly by the poorly executed concept. In a title that clearly implies these are the greatest places featured, I felt the chosen photographs illustrated some lackluster locales. Furthermore, the organization was too loose. The book could have benefited from better formating not only of its categories, but of the photos themselves, which are often stretched in an unflattering matter.

4 out of 5 stars International Artist Magazine - People and Figures .......2004-07-31

If you receive International Artist Magazine, and I highly recommend that you subscribe if you haven't already, then you've seen all of these paintings featured in this book before in the magazines. BUT - you do get an expanded view of the artwork, as well as a more in-depth interview with each individual artist, since each artist gets their own page in the book.
The "Find-It-Faster" feature in the book, (pictorial pages of content) is not much more than filler, in my opinion. I would have prefered 17 more featured artists, instead of 17 pages of reduced work of those already in the book. The artwork on the front of the book is indeed shown in more depth on pages 6 and 7, by the way. [see previous reviewer's statement]
The last page titled, "Terms you should know" is an abbreviated list of art terms every artist should already know. Oddly, the list stops at the letter "L" for "lifting." I believe there are other art terms starting with M through Z that are worthy of inclusion. Perhaps the other books have included those letters.
Overall, if you enjoy International Artist Magazine and long for greater details, this book series is for you since you can pick and choose your specific genre: people and figures; landscapes; still life and florals; seascapes, rivers and lakes; favorite subjects; and flowers and gardens.

4 out of 5 stars Emphasis on oil.......2004-07-20

A hundred different painters explain how they tackled in their paintings one of the most difficult, elusive and rewarding subjects: people. Each painting gets a page long explanation, focused in one of the techniques employed or in some creativity issue relevant to the subject matter. The fact that most artists list the colors they used is definitely a plus. My only qualm with this book are that, being watercolor my medium of choice, I found this books places a lot of attention in oil (and if you're a pastelist or use some other technique, you're in an even worse position). Another minor flaw is the fact that the beautiful picture on the cover is not of those analyzed inside. However, I am being nitpicky, as this book is beatiful and inspiring, and will help anyone seeking to expand his or her creative horizons-

      Book Description

A rare jewel has been discovered in the oeuvre of Ansel Adams.SIERRA NEVADA: THE JOHN MUIR TRAIL, originally published in an edition of only 500 copies in 1938, is an extraordinary publication in many respects. Adams, at the age of 36, was commissioned to prepare a book of his photographs taken along the world-famous John Muir Trail as a tribute to Pete Starr, a young American mountaineer (and son of a Sierra Club president) killed in a climbing accident. Composed of 50 photographs of the Sierra Nevada--many never published again--the book is an exquisite portrait of the mountain world of the High Sierra in California. When first published, it set a new standard for fine photographic reproduction in book form. Little, Brown takes great pride in announcing a new edition of this magnificent book.

      Customer Reviews:

      3 out of 5 stars A book of so-so quality for AA's gem prints.......2006-11-01

It is always told that AA put enormous energy and care in producing his 1938 edition of "Sierra Nevada: The John Muir Trail", originally published in only 500 copies and a fine art book of highest quality at the time.

I never saw a copy of the origional edition and my comment is purely on what I see in this 2006 standard edition. I don't know how this book is made from the original edition. It says tri-tone but the printing quality is so-so. Some images are a little vague, some losing details in shadow or highlight. The book is pale in compasrison with some great AA books published by Bulfinch in the past, such as "California" or "Yosemite and the High Sierra". You can find some images from this book in other AA books and in better quality. Overall, it would make AA uneasy to stamp his famous AA Authorized Edition to the book. If it were not for its historical value, I'd skip this book.

Now Bulfinch also offers a 2006 deluxe edition at $1,200. Again I haven't seen a copy but perhaps the pricier version can live up to the standard of the original edition.

The trend looks a little worrisome recently in AA books pulished by Bulfinch. The printing quality goes down from "California (1997)" to "Ansel Adams at 100 (hardcover 2001)". "Trees (2004)" rebounds just a little but "Sierra Nevada: The John Muir Trail (2006)" is a little disappointing. I would hope the next AA book by Bulfinch can rejuvenate the printing quality, even if doing so means a higher price tag.

      Book Description

Mounds and earthworks are the most conspicuous elements of prehistoric Native American culture to be found on the landscape of eastern North America. Indian Mounds of the Middle Ohio Valley identifies and describes 70 extant, publicly accessible sites in Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio, and West Virginia, where mounds were constructed by Woodland people beginning some 3000 years ago. This book also reviews the culture, history, and geography of the Woodland and Late Prehistoric mound building groups and the fate of their structures during the Historic period. Sources of additional information about the Ohio Valley mound building groups are provided, as is access information for the mound and earthwork sites.

The revised edition of the popular guide book incorporates new information and ideas about the mound building groups that have appeared since the first edition was published in 1986, and describes almost twice as many sites as were in the earlier edition.

We spent a few days hunting down the mounds in Southern Ohio. We used this book as a guide and carefully mapped out the sites we thought we could fit into our time frame. The book is filled with great information and served as a valuable reference. The State and Federal Park sites are the best maintained and offer on-site information. At several of the sites, the mounds were downplayed by other monuments or historical reference. And of course, a golf course adorns one of the mound formations. The good news is they left the mounds and didn't plow them away. Great Book, we will probably use it again to research other sites.

      5 out of 5 stars Ohio's Prehistoric Earthworks.......2005-09-10

At one time Ohio had the largest concentration of prehistoric earthworks on the planet. While sadly most of these structures have been lost over time to human intrusion, a number do still remain in this state. This book shows excellent photographs and diagrams of most of the more well-known and interesting sites. Here you will find the Newark mound groups, Fort Ancient, Serpent Mound, and details on the Adena, Hopewell, and other peoples who erected these impressive monuments to collective effort. Not only are the mounds studied here, directions are provided to make day-trips to these locations possible. An approachable starting point for learning about Ohio's amazing pre-Columbian past.

        Book Description

These stunning bird's-eye views offer rare and beautiful glimpses of northern Michigan's unique terrain from the lofty perch of photographer Marge Beaver's camera lens. Beaver's breathtaking four-season photographs transform our view of Michigan into a magical land. From the Sleeping Bear dune in winter with its vertiginous sandy edifice to a Coast Guard cutter shattering the icy Straits to the ghostly silhouette of a sunken ship and the brilliant turquoise waters of Crystal, Torch, Elk, Charlevoix, and Glen lakes, these are images of Michigan as you've never seen her before. All of these, plus arresting photographs of cherry orchards in snowy-white bloom, winding rivers, and deep green forests make this book a collector's item for anyone who loves Michigan.

Marge Beaver has been the Midwest's premiere aerial photographer for the past 20 years. She has taken photographs in nearly every U.S. state, and her aerial photos have graced the covers of over 35 books and magazines. She lives in Muskegon, Michigan.

5 out of 5 stars Best of the Great Lakes.......2007-05-16

I stopped in the bookstore and this book caught my eye with the tremendous aerial photo of South Manitou Island in the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. I've hiked there many times and was impressed by this beautiful view of the entire island.

When I looked through the book I knew this was one to share with friends and family. There are unique views here of many of the most beautiful spots in Michigan from Tawas Point to Garden Island. The views are all aerial photographs done with great artistry and perspective. There are views from on high of Manistee and the Lake Michigan Shore at sunset with the sky full of color and the lake spread out to the horizon and the lights of the city seemingly twinkling below, and others of green emerald forested islands settled in Lake Michigan and Lake Huron with a surround of aquamarine waters.

There are dozens of "coffee table books" full of beautiful pictures of the Great Lakes. It is not difficult to obtain pictures when there are so many scenic coastlines in the state. What sets this book apart and makes it by far the best photo book of the Great Lakes is the selection of the images, their color and the depth that the aerial perspective provides. You have probably not seen the Mackinaw Bridge as shown here from up in the clouds looking down across the span to the shore at St. Ignace and the eastern reach of the Upper Penninsula. I think anyone with an interest in the land and shores of northern Michigan would be enthralled with this book and would enjoy sharing it with others as I have.

        5 out of 5 stars fantastic!.......2006-08-22

I just received my personal copy of Marge Beavers latest effort ABOVE THE NORTH. If any book comes close to illustrating the beauty of Michigan, this is the one! She has combined her love of aviation with her talents in photography to produce one of the most beautiful "coffee table" books currently available. The color, detail and beauty of the state as show by Ms Beaver just hits you in the eye and is a book i definitely want to share with others.

5 out of 5 stars 'Above the North' goes above and beyond.......2006-08-06

These striking aerial photos show views of northern Michigan's most beautiful landmarks and terrain. The book includes many views of Michigan's beautiful lakes and scenery with seasonal photos from spring through winter. Not only are the pictures exceptionally well done from a technical standpoint, but it is evident that Marge Beaver has the eye of an artist as well. It was fun seeing all the places in Michigan I've visited, but also to find new locales in Michigan that I hope to visit one day.
