4 out of 5 stars Drugs in Pregnancy reference.......2006-12-15

Big, bountiful, beautiful book. Heavy, hard to get around, huge for transport reference guide. Quite expensive and not very portable... palm pilot version would be nice or quick, pocket reference....

5 out of 5 stars my single most valuable reference book.......1999-01-20

I do locum tenens (temporary) doctoring and when I go on an assignment this is the first book to go in my suitcase. I take it to the office with me in the morning and take it home at night in case I get a question that I need it for. It is clear, concise, comprehensive and as authoritative as any text can be. If you care for or prescribe meds to pregnant or lactating women, this is a "must have".

5 out of 5 stars GREAT BOOK.......2007-06-11

As a new mom, I was very paranoid to ingest any medicines. This book informed me of all medications, AND vitamins. I was looking for a book that also contained herbs. This one has a few, and a good rating system. Very clear, and layperson terms.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent information.......2007-06-11

Dr. Hale is the foremost authority on medications and breastfeeding. This book also contains pregnancy categories. A great deal of information is presented and well organized. Written so as to be readable by laypeople.

5 out of 5 stars Useful while nursing.......2007-05-13

This is used by the lactation consultants. I purchased for my own personal use. Very helpful and easy to read.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, user-friendly reference.......2007-04-10

As a busy Women's Health NP, I have used other texts on medication use in pregnancy and during lactation, as well as Dr. Hale's website. I find this book enormously helpful in my practice. It is clear and concise, as well as being very comprehensive. It is great to bring into the exam room to review the information with the patient.

5 out of 5 stars essential for breastfeeding counselors.......2007-02-01

Dr. Hale's book is a must-have for breastfeeding counselors and anyone else who works with pregnant or breastfeeding mothers.

4 out of 5 stars IBCLC review.......2007-08-13

I think this book really did help me with the IBCLE exam! I would really recommend using this as a study guide!!

5 out of 5 stars RN, IBCLC.......2004-06-09

This text and tests were very helpful in preparation for the lactation consultant exam. Very good practice exams helped those of us who haven't been in school for a while. The exams help with content and timing. CD Rom was helpful for the picture portion of the exam.

5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive Lactation Consultant Exam Review with CD-ROM.......2001-08-10

This book is an excellent preparation and a "must have" for the IBCLC Exam. If you have not taken a board exam in a long time, this book gets you into "exam mode". Sometimes, taking a test of this nature requires good exam skills. This book gives you plenty of much needed practice. The first part of the book delves into the different sections on the exam blueprint. It lists topics to learn and resources to read. The second part is three 200 questions tests. Eighty some questions in each test are based on pictures from the CD-ROM. The answers generally give the reasons for the right and wrong answer, list the difficulty of the question, and state from what section of the exam blueprint it pertains to. Having practiced with these tests, I felt very confident going into the Exam. It also is a great review for LCs who are retaking the certification exam. I heard comments from several LCs who stated the first exam they took they did not do as well as they thought because oftentimes taking exams is all about practice. They performed much better on the subsequent exams when they studied their mistakes. This is a "must have" for everyone planning to sit for the board exam.

5 out of 5 stars Essential reading.......2003-09-23

This should be required reading for any physician caring for the breastfeeding mother or the breastfed baby. With all of the mythology surrounding breastfeeding and the wide range of advice given to nursing mothers, it is essential that practitioners give accurate, informed advice. Reading this book will allow health care professionals to do so.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent and educational for the medical profession.......2003-08-19

As a gynecologist based in Spain, I found this book extremely helpful while counseling my patients about breastfeeding, and while breastfeeding myself. I think most obstetrical textbooks do not cover enough the aspect of breastfeeding, and numerous questions remain to be answered, some as simple as: both breasts or one breast?. These simple questions, however, are an important source of stress to new mothers. Apart from that, the more "medical" aspects of the book are also exceptional. A must for all medical professionals involved in pregnancy, birth and infant care.

5 out of 5 stars Breastfeeding: A Guide for the Medical Profession.......2002-03-21

I am a IBCLC and work in a NICU with very small premature &/or sick newborns. As a nurse I very frequently use Dr Lawrence's book when there is a conflict with a doctor over the care of our breastfeeding babies. Dr Lawrence's book is compleatly research based and written with authority --- no touchy/feely all professional. It is a great book to use to study for the lactation exam !!! Get the newest copy date you can find -- doctors respect new information.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Reference for Medical Professionals and Mothers.......2000-10-21

This is an amazing text that answers almost every question the reader or a patient can bring to the table. Easy to read with good references. This is a must have for anyone who treats lactating women. As a mother I found the book to be very helpful, as a medical professional this book has been an excellent reference when treating lactating women. Definitely 5 stars!

5 out of 5 stars Breastfeeding: A Guide for the Medical Profession.......2000-07-26

I am a Registered Dietitian and have promoted breastfeeding to women for years. It wasn't until I became a breastfeeding mother that I wanted to be more informed on the subject. This book provides the how and why on specific benefits of lactation. If you do not have a medical background, be aware that there is a great deal of medical language. I am very pleased with my purchase.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource.......2005-03-24

I purchased this book to increase my knowledge base and have found it to be an excellent source of information. This is great for new as well as experienced nurses who work with breastfeeding clients.

5 out of 5 stars Breast Feeding the Newborn.......2000-07-02

As a training Lactation Cunsultant in a local hospital in Israel, I have been working with breastfeeding women for over two years. Often, differences in opinion between the Nursing Staff and Lactation Consultants surface. I found this book to help promote one uniformed goal; the breastfeeding mother. With all of Ms Biancuzzo's up-to-date research and information, and with the book's easy to read format, this book is a welcomed addition to my library.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Good.......2007-03-27

This book is good. Very informative... but can be quite "dry" reading. I bought it to use for review for the IBCLC exam. While it's good it's not my favorite. I like Jan Riordan's book better because of her writing style.

5 out of 5 stars Breastfeeding and mother's milk.......2007-01-05

This book is fantastic for anyone wishing to learn the composition and importance of mother's milk, anatomy, pathology, physiology - basically in depth literature surrounding breastfeeding.

Very easy to read and understand!

5 out of 5 stars Wow!.......2004-11-17

Once you have some basics under your belt, this book is the next step.

This book covers all of the material you already know while also checking your information for any holes. Simply reading this book through will give you an excellent foundation to work from - and that is a manageable task given how well it is written.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Wish I'd gotten the updated version.......2007-08-07

As much as I wanted to like this diet, it just did not work for me. She recommended eating 2400 calories for my body type/weight and I knew that would never help me lose weight. The biggest thing this book helped with was knowing that it's really important for me to make the most of every calorie while breastfeeding, for my OWN health. Diet info is changing constantly, and I felt like Behan recommended way too many starches and way too little protein, especially for a mom who's getting back into strength training. I don't know what her 2007 version of this book suggests, but I'm sure it's more updated in this regard. I've read over and over on the internet that a breastfeeding mother should eat at least 1800 calories, so I've been sticking with around 1800-1950 using some of Behan's suggestions (and also using Bob Green's Best Life Diet), and have immediately seen weight loss and have no problems with milk supply.

1 out of 5 stars Buy the updated version!.......2007-05-09

Please note how old this edition is (1992!) and choose the updated edition Eat Well, Lose Weight, While Breastfeeding: The Complete Nutrition Book for Nursing Mothers. We've learned a lot about diet, nutrients, and bfing in the last 14+ years!

5 out of 5 stars Well Written!.......2007-01-10

I really enjoyed this book. I found that it was really easy to read and it didn't take long to read the entire book. I really didn't want to "diet" while breastfeeding but was wanting information on how I should eat while breastfeeding. I found that when I started eating better by following the book's suggestions and began excercising regularly, I started losing half a pound a week. I am now proud to say that I weigh less than I did before I got pregnant and am still nursing my 7 month old daughter.

1 out of 5 stars Are you kidding me...???.......2006-10-04

This book was such a disappointment to me! The majority of her information is completely inaccurate. I would have expected a little more coming from a dietician. The only thing I can say about this book on a positive note, is a few of the recipes are okay and she supports breastfeeding. I felt like this book was/is right with our culture...focused on how mom looks after having a baby. New mom's have enough on their plate worrying about how to adjust to this little person who's taken over their life. They don't need another book emphasizing how their body should look or perform. Every mom is different, I know. I just think mothers should be focused on breastfeeding successfully and loving their sweet baby, not trying to fit into prepregnancy pants 2 weeks postpartum. A lot has changed in 14 years and new mom's need to realize that as well...this book is 14 years old. Good luck.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Read!!.......2006-05-29

This book was the best. There is so much useful information inside that is easy to understand and written in such a way it reads guickly and you don't have to dwell over each page to grasp it. It had the information I couldn't find other places about the nutrients you need while breastfeeding and how to know that you can eat healthy and lose the weight without having to worry about depriving your child or yourself of the wonderful bond of breastfeeding.

There's a huge difference between "natural" and "easy"--just ask a woman who chose natural childbirth! Breastfeeding is certainly the most natural option for feeding your little one, and repeated studies have shown its nutritive value. But that doesn't make it easy, and not all medical practitioners are trained to answer questions about the process. In The Ultimate Breastfeeding Book of Answers, authors Jack Newman and Teresa Pitman have assembled a mass of real-life stories from their clinical experience, and with their straightforward, helpful advice, you'll be breastfeeding successfully in no time.

Divided into three main sections, the book provides new information about why breastfeeding really is the healthiest option and where you can find good, hands-on help locally. Later chapters deal with feeding-related issues like sleeping patterns, babysitters, and when to wean your baby--the authors strongly believe in long-term (through toddlerhood) breastfeeding, a slightly different approach than many working moms may prefer. The majority of the book falls under the section "Common Problems and Solutions," and this is where to turn for advice on everything from breast refusal to slow weight gain. Special topics like illness or medication in mom's system are dealt with in detail, as are sore breasts, colic, and premature or low-weight babies. The chapter covering unusual situations, such as breast surgery and adoption, emphasizes the possibilities rather than the difficulties, and offers advice on the use of hormones and finding a breast-milk bank. Ending with four pages of resources on everything from Web sites to hospitals, you'll find the answers you've been looking for in this unique guide. --Jill Lightner

5 out of 5 stars Great Book Gives You A Different view from other BF Books.......2007-10-04

I was told about this book from a BF Group I am a member of. I was intrigued by some of the Author's views because some of them are very different than other BF books I have read. After reading his book I feel empowered and liberated from the typical sterotypes placed on BF moms. The Author takes his many experiances from around the world and puts what should be a natural event in a woman's life into perspective. BF is a difficult journey for many women and this book will help you with BF, starting solids, multiples, and tandum nursing. He also talks in detail about formula and formula companies, Details that I had no idea about formula. You won't be sorry you got this book!

5 out of 5 stars A down to earth approach.......2007-07-09

After reading through several other breast feeding books, not to mention many online searches, this is the one that became the breastfeeding bible for me. Highly recommended for any pregnant or new moms. I had problems nursing my baby for 6 weeks but eventually we got the hang of it, thanks to this book and a local La Leche League leader (ladies if you are in pain call your local LLL - especially if you are close to quittting!!!). AND you can email Newman at his website as well for advice! One of the best things about this book for me was the confidence it gave me that I could feed my baby and that I didn't have to follow a litany of rules or be perfect in order to do that. He reminds you that women are and have been breastfeeding their babies for millenia...and helps open your mind to a way of mothering that is more natural and instinctive as opposed to the more 'traditional' way that basically involves trying to control your baby through scheduling.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book for Logical Thinkers.......2007-05-21

I thought this book was wonderful! I'm not trying to offend anyone with my title for this review, but I found this book to be very logical, precise, and to the point. I tried reading "The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding", but found it wasn't for me. I needed someone to break it down for me and I feel like Dr. Newman and Teresa Pitman do that very well in this book.

This book was very reaffirming for me. It caused me to really think about what doctors and friends were telling me. I got a lot of wrong information about breastfeeding and this book really opened my eyes and caused me to really think about what these people were saying.

I completely disagree with the negative reviews about this book being too harsh, preachy, and biased. Of Course it's biased and pro breastfeeding! It's a book about BREASTFEEDING! Also, some of these reviews make it sound like he has a hidden agenda. Guess what ladies, he makes his agenda known throughout the book so it can't be hidden. He is pro-breastfeeding and not afraid to say it throughout the book. I found it very refreshing.

Dr. Jack Newman's book is a must read for every pregnant woman and new mother. My midwife recommended it to me and it has been a wonderful guide even as I breastfeed my third child. Dr. Newman's information is thorough and his style is warm and witty. I also appreciate a book that normalizes when so much of the information we receive today warns us that something is wrong. Thank you Dr. Newman!!!
