Complete resource.......2007-05-26
We wanted a resource for the wine process from growth to the glass.
Everything you need is in here.
Almost perfect.......2007-01-18
This book tells you everything about growing grapes and producing fine wine. It even deals with the choice of grape-varieties suited for your climate. It is almost perfect. I think many Europeans will read this book, and it would have been perfect if it included the Meditteranean countries in the tables of climate-zones and selection of suitable varieties. It is very difficult to find this (about Europe) on the internet. But a great and very useful book.
From Vines to Wines, a very accurate title........2006-11-03
This is a very informative book, I can not wait to start my own wine grape vine.
Easy reading.......2006-11-03
I purchased this book for my 12 yr.old grandson. We have found the illustrations and explainations to be very clear and easy to follow. The book also has extensive useful information to help the beginner as he grows in knowledge,
Great Book. Quick Shipment. Greaat seller........2006-08-30

Book Description
Anyone who ever wanted to have homemade wine and never thought they had the space or ability to make it will love this book. The Backyard Vintner is a handy guide to at-home wine making that teaches readers the tips and tricks of the trade. It is perfect for those who want to bring the feeling of wine country right into their own backyard.
The Backyard Vintner teaches readers how to start and maintain a vineyard, providing vital information on topics such as planting, trellising, and proper pruning techniques for grapes; which grape varieties will grow best in every climate or region; and the wines that can be made from each variety. Basic recipes for wines, and advice on topics such as bottling, storing, and serving wines, are also provided.
Customer Reviews:
Growing grapes made easy.......2007-07-28
This book provides usefull and pertinent information all the way from the grape planting process to the wine making process. He walks you through every step carefully, but does not suggest a robotic structure for making wine, he leaves open oppertunies to show your own creativity.
Touches on the important points.......2007-07-26
I've purchased several "how to" wine books and this one is good, but not great. I would not rely on it as my only reference. Rather, it makes a very good companion for "From Vines to Wines."
For general information only........2007-07-11
The Backyard Vinter presented only general information about wine making, not specific enought for an individual wanting to learn how to make wine.
great book.......2006-02-17
Very comprehensive and thorough. Good reading and runs one through the basics and beyond. All good.

Soils for Fine Wines
ASIN: 1891267663 |
Book Description
There is a recent phenomenon of growing wine grapes in cold climates where it was previously believed impossible. The authors researched and visited grape growing in Estonia, Latvia, Denmark and Belarus and brought back the technology and grape varieties to Minnesota where they have successfully developed vineyards and made the wine. Wine grapes are now grown in every state in the US, including Alaska and North Dakota. This is a "hands-on" book with photos, figures and tables. The 34 grape varieties of special interest for cold climates and detailed instructions on winter vine survival are provided. Selecting a vineyard site, training and pruning, grape ripening and keys to successful winemaking are detailed.
Customer Reviews:
A good cold climate grape reference.......2006-07-04
This book provides new information on grape growing in cold climate areas that was not available previously. The book includes descriptions and photographs of many cold climate grapes. While the climate I am in is not exactly a cold climate, some of the same issues apply, such as budbreak vs last frost date, winter survival and cold hardiness. The author discusses varities from Eastern Europe (that I cannot spell or pronounce), as well as cold hardy selections from Elmer Swenson and David McGregor. If you are interested in growing grapes and your winter temperature goes below -10 deg F, this book is an excellent resource.

Book Description
Outstanding in breadth and coherence, this definitive review is designed to embrace the entire scope of wine culture, including vine horticulture, winery design, wine processing, wine quality control, wine analysis, and wine marketing.
Winemaking: From Grape Growing to Marketplace, Second Edition, translates current literature and scientific developments into useable knowledge which grape growers, wine makers, wine educators, and wine marketers can apply towards their individual needs and tasks.
Presented in an easy-to-use, step-by-step format, the text guides the reader through the perils and pitfalls, appropriate alternative pathways, and major sources for equipment and materials within the winemaking industry. Throughout the text, pertinent regulations and permits enforced by the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms are outlined. This excellent guide to winemaking will be of use to a wide audience, in particular:
-current and prospective vintners, both commercial and amateur - as an essential guide book in their cellars,
-wine connoisseurs - offers an in-depth understanding of crafting wine,
-professional marketers - provides a solid understanding of the rationale of methodology employed by grape-growers and vintners,
-students - searching for an initial overview of contemporary viticulture.
Among updates and new material the second edition includes information on marketing wines and on the use of computers in viticulture and winemaking.
As a whole, this book is an invaluable source into the elements of viticulture, enology, and marketing wine for both academia and industry. It also serves as a solid foundation from which to advance to more technical levels.
Customer Reviews:
Why is it out of print?.......2000-04-26
As a wine 'amateur' (French meaning - no French person would ever say they were a 'connossieur' of wine, as one can never know it), this book was great in teaching more of the nuts and bolts of the wine biz. Grab this online somewhere - hopefully Amazon.com's out-of-print service - but grab it - it is very interesting.
Excellent book on all aspects of winery business.......1999-04-29
This book touches on all parts of the winemaking business from vineyard costs to winery costs and designs to marketing your wines. It has a good section on analytical testing procedures and 50 pages of charts, tables and conversions that come in handy.
The section on vineyard costs details year by year expenses from start-up through year 7. I also found the feasibility and finance section very helpful in starting up my own winery. The section on government regulations was very helpful in warning any prospective winery owners of what the ATF and state regulators expect. There are plenty of examples of good record keeping that various governments expect you to keep on hand at all times.
Of course this book also has 117 pages of good winemaking details along with good sections on microbiology, winery equipment, barrels and label designs. If this book has any obvious fault it would be that it does not go deep enough into some of these subjects, but then it would be thousands of pages long instead of the 440 pages it is.
An all around great book on winemaking and the rest of the business that goes with a winery and it's operation. This book has lots of good business information in it that I have not seen in any other winemaking book. I recommend it for anyone who not only wants to make great wine but also is serious about starting his own commercial winery.
Poorly written and not worth the money.......1999-03-10
Here is good evidence why Indiana is not a mecca of fine wines. Mr. Vine needs to take a few classes at U.C. Davis or read any of Amerine's books. The faults are too many but he did do a good job by inserting Government Regs and a lot of tables that would be hard for him to screw-up.

Very disappointed in this book. I found it a shallow and pretentiously technical book.
Excellent how-to........1998-02-20
I got the book from the library and I want it. There is too much good detail to remember. Can you talk them into publishing it on CD Rom? Or, can they at least print some more so I can buy it? It is a narrow subject that probably doesn't have enough readers, but it is good.

The only book of its kind, it helps to have a chem degree!.......1998-09-16
This is an excellent book, I recommend it to anyone who wishes to prepare wine from scratch. The book is written for the reader with knowledge of basic science concepts, especially a chemistry degree.
Whether planting one vine or one thousand, read this book!.......1998-08-24
Jeff Cox does what so few writers can do; he makes viticulture so interesting that you won't want to put this book down. That's saying a lot!
The whole book is a masterful handbook for the home or small commercial grower. From selecting the vines and a growing site to planting, growing, pruning, and harvesting to making wine, Cox literally packs the pages with useful information, tables and how-to illustrations. Even his appendix on grape pests and their control is written as a trouble-shooting guide based on symptoms rather than cause. This is both refreshing and useful.
If you can only buy one book on the subject, this is the one to buy.
The complete guide to growing grapes & making your own wine........1998-06-12
With enthusiasm and clarity, the author leads his readers, from the amateur to the accomplished winemaker, in his or her quest for flawless grapes and extraordinary wine. The process is not as daunting as it may seem. What matters most is finding the grape that gives wine you like and which thrives and ripens (consistently) in your climate. The author goes on to describe vineyard siting, soil preparation, culture, pruning, trellising, and pest control.
The second half of the book thoroughly describes the wine-making process: from crushing the grapes and pressing, to primary and secondary fermentations, racking, bottling, corking, cellaring, and evaluating the finished product.
This book will appeal to the person with a serious desire to grow grapes and make wine, the aspiring wine-making entrepreneur, the home gardener interested in the culture of grapes, the wine connoisseur, and the casual hobbyist. No matter what level of invlovement you want to have in the wine-making process, "From Vines to Wines" will satisfy your needs and curiosity.
Great Beginner's Guide to Growing Grapes and Making Wine.......1998-05-30
My family is in the process of starting a small vineyard and winery. Jeff's book was not only fun and easy to read, it has provided valuable information. I can recommend the book without reservation to anyone interested in growing grapes and making wine.

Customer Reviews:
Important questiones unansewred........2006-09-10
Very basic information at best. Not really much help if you are seriously thinking of growing your own grapes. Many questions, like what variety should I grow, in not addressed properly as far as a Merlot or Cabernet etc. In fact the word "Merlot" is not even in the book! How far apart should the vines be planted? Beats me! I guess I'll have to look in another book.
Probably a helpful read if starting a home vineyard.......2005-08-17
I thought this book was mediocre at best. I was surprised when got it because it is a small book. I have read others on grape growing and wine making and this didnt hit the top of the list. I was a little surprised because some of the important info of this book contradicted other books which makes me think that there are different methods to do certain things. The book has some very good ideas, but it can sometimes be hard to understand. I found many of the illustrations and tables hard to understand. Being an amateur grape grower, I guess i just had more questions than the illustrations and explanations could answer. Some chapters are very good. For example there is one that talks about specific diseases; this would be a good reference for the amateur grape grower.
I would say to gain more knowledge if you are new to the subject, read this book because it will allow you to see things in a different perspective and it will reinforce certain ideas, but if you had to pick one book, dont pick this one. I really liked Jeff Cox's From Vines to Wines because it had good info on grape growing and wine making.
Western States Beware............2003-04-22
If you have simply a curiosity on how to grow grapes, this book will suffice. It reads like a large brochure. However, important topics, such as choosing an appropriate vineyard site, are fully explained in only half a page. The illustrations are few and very poorly drawn, as well as some being so small one needs a magnifiying glass to read them. A few paragraphs are so poorly written (J. R. McGrew), they need to be re-read multiple times. Most importantly, this book is written strictly for the EASTERN UNITED STATES...
Wine and Cuisine.......2001-10-26
This is the definitive book for growing, fertilization and vineyard care for American Vines. Any questions you have this little book will answer them. J Loenholdt talks in a language that all can understand........
If you're gonna plant a few grapes, read this book!.......1998-07-24
You could probably learn a lot from this little book even if you weren't going to plant a few vines, but if you're even thinking of growing grapes, this is a great little primer. It isn't going to make you a viticulturist, but it will prepare you for what you're about to get into. In the process, it will probably help you avoid more than a few mistakes.
The American Wine Society does select good authors. Each chapter is tightly written, adequately illustrated, and easily read and absorbed. Most are simply practical, as they should be. A couple border on being scholarly, which is a plus. Dr. John R. McGrew wrote six of the ten chapters. He's no T. V. Munson, but he is a professional grape breeder and a darn good winemaker, too. You can take his word to the bank.
If you think you might like to plant a few vines out back, buy this book. Read it cover-to-cover and then read Jeff Cox's From Vines to Wines. Long before the planting, you'll be dreaming of future ! harvests and vintage wines.

Berry Good Book.......2005-04-28
This book provides invaluable information about growing berries and other small fruits. The information provided is geared to the family or small-scale market gardener. The main fruits covered in this book are strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, blackberries, grapes, currants and gooseberries, cranberries, elderberries, and mulberries. Lesser known fruits such as huckleberries, choke cherries, and wine berries are also mentioned. For each of the main fruits, Logsdon begins by providing information to help the gardener choose between varieties, and he suggests specific varieties suited for growing in the North, South, East and West. He also explains how to prepare for planting, and how to mulch, prune, and maintain the plants. He also discusses common problems gardeners may have with these fruits, such as diseases or insects, and suggests ways to avoid these problems. Although Logsdon does not take a strictly organic approach, he encourages gardeners to avoid the use of poisons whenever possible, and presents numerous alternatives that should make spraying unnecessary for most fruits. The book is amply illustrated with black-and-white photographs and drawings and there is an index.
