Everything one needs to know before investing in tropical fruits. All cultural and horticultal issuses are covered as well as other uses of the plants. Morton even covers related species and major nutritional values.
Fruits of Warm Climates will pay for itself on the first purchase of tropical crop germplasm.
Good but expensive.......2001-10-03
This book is a real wonder book for any fruit lover who wants to do more than just plant fruit trees.
However, I am unable to understand why the price has almost doubled in just a few months. I really wnated to give one to a friend as a gift, but now i have to rethink that.

The "Sunset Garden Guide" of Tropical Plants.......2001-10-02
This is THE bible of tropical fruit growers, containing information about rare fruit trees--how to propagate, grow, and eat them, and more. I compare it to the Sunset Garden Guide but instead for tropical fruits, but much more detailed. A must have for the rare fruit/tropical fruit person!

Book Description
Durian is extensively grown in tropical regions, the major producers being Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia and the Philippines. The tree is also grown in northern Australia, some South American countries and in Africa. Although to many novices its smell is notoriously offensive, its taste can become a passion and it is one of the most popular fruits in South-East Asia. To quote the great 19th century naturalist, A.R. Wallace: "To eat durian is a new sensation worth a voyage to the East to experience". This book is the first comprehensive, scientific volume to be published in English on this "king of tropical fruit". It provides information on the biology, propagation and use of the fruit, and descriptions of the scientififc basis of production practices and orchard management, as well as post-harvest processing. It will be a unique resource for horticulture libraries worldwide and for students of tropical horticulture.

Customer Reviews:
Helpful.......2007-05-06
I purchased this book since I have citrus trees in my back yard in Florida and had a particular disease or pest. The photos helped some. I did have to consult a much larger book at the Home Depot on citrus problems published by Ortho. Between all the reading, the internet and talking with others, I chose the proper chemical and am pleased with the results. The info on Hawaii wasn't of much value, however I guess they are in a sub-tropical area as well. Not sure how one achieves the beautiful fruit pictured on the front cover though. Our trees in this area have had a blight spread by wind and many nice trees have been cut down to prevent the transfer. Of all the varieties I have seen growing here, very few have nice skin or unblighted foliage. Hopefully I will be able to reach that goal. The book also covers a number of fruits that I have not observed in our area. The book is well laid out and is a good guide for basic reference. Appreciate Ortho publishing this book for us amateurs.
Very good overview.......2002-12-21
This book provides a very helpful overview of subtropical fruits. I was interested in finding good fruits to plant that are hard to obtain in stores and do well in my climate. By perusing this book multiple times over the course of several months, I was able to begin to get a feel for what would be good candidates. I have since planted several of them, am enjoying good fruit, and still like glancing through this book in a free moment...
Way too vague.......2002-12-02
If you want to know how to take care of your tropical fruit you won't learn it here! If you want to see pictures of citrus fruit, that you will see. I have pineapple plants along with banana, mango, orange, key lime, tangerine, and papaya trees. This book was worthless to me. I already know what they look like.
Straightforward.......2001-07-29
I bought this book when I was in middle school and memorized it :-p. Now I am a college junior and I'm working towards interning at a tropical fruit grove later on. I won't say this book started me on that journey, but it's a pretty good guide for learning
Interesting book but needs to answer more questions........1999-09-21
I read the book from Ortho on "All about Citrus and Subtropical Fruits" but in my reading was not able to find out which type of trees could and could not be planted around a swimming pool. I am very interested and would appreciate a more detailed review on this.

Handa's Surprise.......2004-01-10
It is a wonderful book that surprises every young reader. The beautiful illustrations made my class of 2-year-olds instant storytellers. The story does not only enhance counting numbers for those beginning to count, it also promotes awareness of tropical fruits found in Kenya. Not forgetting the 7 skillfully illustrated animals each child will not only identify but appreciate.

Book Description
This guide is for amateurs and professionals who find pleasure and excitement in beachcombing for stranded tropical seeds and fruits (sea-beans) on beaches ranging from Norway and Holland to South America, Africa, Southeast Asia, the Pacific Islands, and South Florida. Included are over 100 accurately and beautifully illustrated line drawings of the common sea-bean. These drawings, along with a key and detailed descriptions, make it possible for the first time to correctly identify a sizable number of tropical drift fruits and seeds from beaches around the world. Also contained in this guide is a section on planting and growing these seeds and fruits, many of which are from common plants of the tropics. Much useful information on polishing sea-beans and making them into artifacts of various kinds is also provided, as sea-beans are commonly fashioned into jewelry and keepsakes in many parts of the world. Readers will be fascinated by the histories of these tropical seeds and fruits.
Customer Reviews:
Good Sea Bean Book .......2007-07-27
This is a good book. It is scientific & complete with excellent drawings of sea beans. It is a must for any sea bean collector.
Nice enough?.......2002-12-29
A 1976 classic, reprinted at the occasion of the 1999 Sea-Bean Symposium. As reprints go this is quite good, with a sturdy cover. The book consists of a general part (Introduction, History, Currents & Beaches, Collecting & Uses, Key) and a catalog. The latter, which comprises just over half the book, consists for each entry of a page (or less) of text and a page (sometimes three) of line-drawings. The line-drawings are not of top quality but adequate.
Although it is good to have this back in print it would have been far preferable to see a revised, expanded and updated edition. In this day and age the black & white photographs in the general part look distinctly out of place, especially for such an appealing subject matter, lending itself so well to spectacular color photography. The topic deserves better?

Encyclopedic on Exotic Fruits.......2001-07-13
Van Aken is lauded by the likes of Emeril Lagasse as being a true pioneer in a new cuisine which fuses American-Caribbean-Pacific Rim foods into exciting new taste combos.
Significant in this cuisine is the use of tropical fruit, so Van Aken has been experimenting. Here we garner the fruits of his research on fruits, with this guide. He also prepared the colorful posters which one can obtain, deatialing the two categories of tropical and sub-tropical varieties.
This is from a series of such works put out by Ten-Speed Press, one of my personal favorite cookbook pubs. They do Trotters, et al. This is another of their fine "The Great ... series," also I enjoy their one on pears and am awaiting the one on mangoes. They go through all the types and then provide recipes, here on drinks and salsas, and desserts, etc.
Fine reference work for those of us who like to find exotic, different components to cook with. This and his wonderful cookbook "New World Cuisine" will get a workout at my kitchen.
Exotic Fruits.......2000-05-27
This is a beautiful book of lovely photographs and tempting recipies. Great for summer parties & cook outs. Mango and guava are my favorites & there are wonderful recipies for these in the book. Could also be used as a "Coffee Table" Book because of the attractive photography.

Book Description
Cancer, arthritis, high blood pressure, chronic pain - these are among the most common and debilitating conditions known to man. In our world of constantly emerging health problems comes an exciting health supplement - noni, a tropical fruit used for centuries by various cultures to treat a wide array of disorders. Currently, there are literally hundreds of thousands of users tapping the seemingly miraculous healing powers of this valuable supplement. In this book, author Neil Solomon, M.D., Ph.D., provides a detailed examination of the historical uses of noni, the modern research concerning its principal nutrients, and a wealth of data from various doctors and other health professionals from around the world, all of which indicates that noni is one of today's most promising and impressive natural healing agents.
Customer Reviews:
The "wonder" non drug--it's a fruit!.......2006-01-01
This is the best, powerful (40 times more powerful than a pineapple to be exact) fruit in the world that cures or taps into the source of your individual problem. From A-Z. I found it in Kauai, Hawaii at a farmers market after being on Soma's and Vicodin's for a fractured sternum from a severe automobile accident. I knew after 5 years of taking medicines and heavy duty meds as they were that it couldn't be good for my liver or kidneys after much more time consuming them to rid my pain. It was amost like fibromyalgia. CRONIC CONTINUAL PAIN. After about 4 months of religiously taking Noni, the pain simply lifted one day never to return. Of course I still take Noni on a regular basis two years later. As having read the book the "Noni Phenomenon", by Dr. Solomon from John Hopkins Medical School, it simply assists in building red blood cells and penetrates to the root of the problem in "x" amount of time. It's not instantaneous; you must be patient and heal from the inside out. It also comes in fruit leather form, liquid and capsule form from certain health food stores. It's a miraculous fruit and it even devoured my friends two of the five tumors in her brain. Unfortunately the other three took over, but HAD she been taking Noni all her life on a regular basis, like I do now, I feel she could have never incurred any of the tumors whatsoever. It has been known to rid cancer completely from the body, depending on the type of cancerous cell. I've introduced it to many friends and they see the difference and feel much better too. It's changed my life. Therefore I like to be a testimonial of this wonderful fruit to educate everyone I come in contact with regardless of anyone having pain, suffering, cancer, fibromyalgia, whatever one's ailments could be. I just want to the world to know!
A really good an informative book.......2004-10-01
It is amazing how people can be bought into writing defaming reviews on a book. Dr. Solomon's licence has nothing to do with this book or his studies on the noni fruit. I have a feeling that these two people did not even read this book. They would not talk like that. It is interesting, and informative, and even if you don't believe in natural remedies (but if you don't why would you read it?), you get a great story. I enjoyed reading this book, and NO, I'm not a distributor, and don't have any interest in promoting it.
Btw. network marketing has nothing to do with pyramid schemes, these "readers" should get more information about what they are talking before they open their mouth.
Noni Juice Also Cures Guillibility.......2004-03-11
Dr. Neil Solomon not only lost his license, but is also under an agreement to never practice medicine or give medical advice, so now he pushes quack cures like Noni Juice which is distributed via the internet and through multi-level marketing.
More than likely, all the positive reviews of this book were written by independant noni distributers who got sucked into the MLM scheme.
Solomon is actually the official physician of the "International Noni Communicatiion Council" and is hardly an impartial scientist.
This is a promotional pamphlet for a noni marketing board promoted by noni salespeople. It has zero medical or scientific merit.
Quack Book, Quack Remedy, Quack Doctor.......2004-03-11
Currently Noni Juice is sold over the internet via Multi-Level Marketing (aka pyramid schemes)and those selling it have been fined in numerous countries for making fradulent claims regarding its properties and most of their claims are pulled directly from Solomon's worthless scribblings. In reality years of testing and noni has never been scientifically proven to alleviate anything.
Noni Juice does, however contain a high dose of potassium that can lead to hyperkalemia and kidney failure.
I can guarantee 100% that every positive review of this book was written by an independant noni distributer who is part of an MLM campaign and has something to gain from describing it in glowing terms. Nobody with even the most basic education in nutrition, medicine or science would promote this rubbish.
An overview of Noni.......2003-12-23
This book provides an overview of the reported health benefits of Noni. I found it easy to read and understand. I am looking for more in depth information but this book provided a good overall knowledge to start with.

Book Description
A hundred-and-fifty-years ago citizens of the United States had never seen a banana, and people in Moscow had never eaten an orange. Today, there are still dozens of species of lush, nutritious tropical fruits largely unknown outside their native habitats. This book takes us to the source, into the exotic regions where tropical fruits grow. With exquisite botanical paintings commissioned especially for this book, along with full color photographs, Tropical Fruit delves into botanical qualities of each fruit and explains how, with care, they can be grown in other regions. Tropical Fruit also offers readers recipes from the fruits' native lands that will make real show-stoppers at home. Art, botany, travelogue and cookbook, this book is a lush and rewarding blend-and surely one of the most satisfying gift books of the season.

Some fruit, but not enough........2001-09-14
This book is beautifully arranged and the quality of the paper is wonderful. The only thing is that it leaves you wanting more!
I find it hard to believe that only forty or so tropical fruits were mentioned when there are so many more exotic and delicious fruits that deserve to written about and shared with those people
who lack the knowledge about them.
