    Book Description

Since the publication of the first edition in 1969, Fundamentals of Rock Mechanics has been widely regarded as the most authoritative and comprehensive book in its field. Out of print for many years, this classic book is now available in its revised 4th edition. Extensively updated throughout, this new edition contains substantially expanded chapters on poroelasticity, wave propagation, and subsurface stresses, as well as entirely new chapters on rock fractures and micromechanical models of rock behavior. Beginning with a detailed discussion of fundamental concepts such as stress and strain, this text offers a thorough introduction to the subject before expertly delving into a fundamental, self-contained discussion of specific topics. Unmatched in the breadth of its treatment of rock mechanics, the new edition of this highly praised text is an invaluable resource for all geologists, geophysicists, and geotechnical engineers working in the field today.

4 out of 5 stars Great for an intermediate level reader.......2006-02-25

It's a perfect book for anyone who wants to know more about soil ecology. It gives introductory basics on some soil chemistry and pedogenesis, but then dives fully into the different ecological processes (and a large section on the critters) at work. I'm using this book in a class I am taking and I would definitely recommend it. Its language is simple enough to express some of the more difficult concepts, but it is complex enough to keep you from being bored. Plenty of graphs, pictures, and studies to accompany readings.

5 out of 5 stars A great reference for ecologists and soil scientists. .......2005-05-11

I just received a copy, and haven't had time to look through it completely, but I would highly recommend this book for any ecologists (particularly graduate students like myself) who are working with organisms that have any biological connection to the soil. Just looking at the number of pages, it's been updated and expanded quite a bit since the first edition. Chapter 4, on soil organisms, is big and relatively descriptive (with useful pictures). Also covers in significant detail microbial communities (Ch. 3), nutrient cycling (Ch. 5), soil food webs (Ch. 6), the relationship between biodiversity and soil (Ch. 7) and includes quite a few sampling methodologies. This book covers, but does not stress the plant-soil relationship (Ch. 2, only a little over 20 pages), which is nice since that information has been of greater historical focus and is covered well elsewhere, while this book's strength is on things that are not as well covered in the standard literature. Other books that cover similar material as this one would be Dindal's (1990) "Soil Biology Guide" (a classic, animal taxonomy-centered tome in this field) and Wood's (1989) smaller, more ecology-centered text "Soil Biology" (too much like this one to justify purchasing it now?). Coleman et al.'s emphasis on ecology makes this book stand out as a great reference.

      4 out of 5 stars A very basic, easy-to-read book..........2003-06-03

A good book for those looking for a very basic, easy-to-read, book. It does have exercises after each chapter, which is good for students. However, many of them are very "repetitive"; the only difference between them are the numbers used in them. I should add that there aren't much challenging problems; most of them are easy.

The book doesn't go deep in some important topics. In some cases the theory seems to be just a "brief intro" to the topic, rather than a real discussion about it. Of course, this does not mean it's a bad book... but it should be taken into account (as the title says) that it deals with the very "fundamentals" of geotechnical engineering.

5 out of 5 stars Fundamentals of Geotechnical Engineering.......2000-11-04

It's excellent book for introduction to Geotechinical Engineering. Only problem I had with this book is that I was not familiar with SI units, but you will get use to it later as you solve some problems by yourelf. There is occassional typos errors with example problems and equation you may need to be careful. Other than that it is still the best book I've read in regards to Geotechincal subject. The book is generally easy to read and understand.

        Book Description

This major revision of a bestselling text shows that soil is three-dimensional and dynamic. This concept is developed in the first two chapters and is built on throughout the book. Chapters 3 through 7 explore soil physical properties and water, with expanded coverage of tillage and traffic and an increased emphasis on water and wind erosion processes. Chapters 8 through 11 discuss the biological aspects of soils as well as their mineralogical and chemical properties. In Chapters 12 through 15, the general area of soil fertility and fertilizer use is covered. Other chapters examine soil genesis, taxonomy, geography, land use and soil survey, and land use interpretations. Finally in chapter 20, the importance of nonagronomic factors in the food population problem are discussed. Both English and metric units are used for crop yields, new figures and tables are included, summary statements are given at the end of the more difficult sections and at the end of each chapter, and non-agricultural examples and several computer applications are provided for reference.

Fundamental Soil Science teaches students about the many facets and uses of soil beyond its use as an agricultural resource. The authors take the approach that soils are dynamic, living, natural resources that affect every aspect of our lives. They also put particular focus on those areas of soil science they deem most critical, including physical, chemical and biological properties. As a learning tool, this publication introduces the reader to concepts then reinforces them throughout. As a reference tool, it meets professionals needs when they seek information about basic soil concepts pertinent to practical experience.

                Book Description

Few processes are as important for environmental geochemistry as the interplay between the oxidation and reduction of dissolved and solid species. The knowledge of the redox conditions is most important to predict the geochemical behaviour of a great number of components, the mobilities of which are directly or indirectly controlled by redox processes. The understanding of the chemical mechanisms responsible for the establishment of measurable potentials is the major key for the evaluation and sensitive interpretation of data. This book is suitable for advanced undergraduates as well as for all scientists dealing with the measurement and interpretation of redox conditions in the natural environment.

                  Book Description

The pollution of groundwater as a result of soil pollution has long been treated as a minor problem, either because the necessary analytical apparatus was not available or because the extent of the pollution has been largely underestimated. It was only the incidents at Love Canal in the USA and at Lekkerkerk in the Netherlands that alerted governmental authorities and scientists to groundwater and soil pollution.
Concerned as they were with this problem, The Scientific Committee on Problems of the Environment (SCOPE) of the International Council of Scientific Unions (ICSU), together with the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Swiss Federal Institute for Environmental Science and Technology (EAWAG) commissioned the present book, the Proceedings of the SCOPE Workshop on Soil and Groundwater Pollution, Ceský Krumlov, Czech Republic, June 6-7, 1994, which specifically focuses on soil and groundwater pollution in Central and Eastern Europe. The book is not limited to scientific issues; it also encompasses the legal and the risk issues.
