Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

Book Description

Wood presents a comprehensive survey of international wood architecture highlighting the incredible versatility of this building material and the environmentally friendly possibilities of using it in residential construction and design. Wood as a material evokes alternate images of warm comfort or sleek cool modern design, and its many special characteristics are explored through the selected projects, interiors, and furniture detailed in this book.Wood provides a unique opportunity to examine contemporary wooden architecture as a global phenomenon rich in cross-cultural influences and universality. It also illustrates the diversity in the use of this material in different climates, cultures, and countries. The book is divided into four main chapters: a short historical introduction; a compilation of different projects shown as a whole, and typologically catalogued according to the use of wood; a compilation of interior designs, arranged like the different spaces of a house and combined with wood furniture; and a catalogue of the most commonly used woods and their properties.

This was my favorite of the modernist wood architecture books that I have bought so far. There is nothing revlutionary but the projects are, for the most part, excellent and the photography beautiful. A good source of ideas for using wood in contemporary projects.

Book Description

Many natural building methods rely upon the use of post and beam frame structures that are then in-filled with straw, cob, cordwood, or more conventional wall materials. But traditional timber framing employs the use of finely crafted jointing and wooden pegs, requiring a high degree of craftsmanship and training, as well as much time and expense. However, there is another way . . .

Timber Framing for the Rest of Us describes the timber framing methods used by most contractors, farmers and owner-builders-methods that use modern metal fasteners, special screws and common sense building principles to accomplish the same goal in much less time. And while there are many good books on traditional timber framing, this is the first to describe in depth these more common fastening methods. The book includes everything an owner-builder needs to know about building strong and beautiful structural frames from heavy timbers, including:
the historical background of timber framing
crucial design and structural considerations
procuring timbers-including different woods and recycled materials
foundations, roofs and in-filling considerations
the common fasteners

A detailed case study of a timber frame project from start to finish completes this practical and comprehensive guide, along with a useful appendix of span tables and a bibliography.

Highly illustrated, this book enables "the rest of us" to build like the professionals and will appeal to owner-builders, contractors and architects alike.

Rob Roy is a former contractor with 11 previous books to his credit. He has been utilizing timber framing techniques for the past 25 years in the construction of homes, as well as in the numerous outbuildings at Earthwood Building School which he founded in 1981 with his wife, Jaki. He is most recently the author of Cordwood Building: The State of the Art (New Society, 2003).

3 out of 5 stars Not enough info, spam.......2007-07-12

While this book does cover the general building process, I feel it does not go into enough detail. While talking about timbers and larger pieces of wood, the charts in the end are all for regular 2x wood. There are so many references to other works where info can be found, that the whole read felt like one large advertisement (many for the author's other publications). Needs more detailed sketches, diagrams, and important detail pictures, and less useless pictures taken from too far away to be useful.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent resource!.......2007-06-10

The book is very informative and helpful. Rob Roy's writing style makes it easy to follow. Not having any experience in building,(being female, that happens) I could still understand all of it, but a little background (even building a doghouse!) might have helped in truly getting the most out of the material.

5 out of 5 stars Rob Roy is a powerhouse proponent for alternative building!.......2004-12-29

This book is written in a very easy to follow style. The concepts all come across as clearly and the illustations do. There is loads of informative content for the alternative builder who is concerned with incorporating natural building methods such as straw bale construction, cordwood masonry, and cob building into thier home. What makes this book stand apart from other texts on the subject is its emphasis on the use metal fasteners to achieve a strong well built frame. While most other timber framing books use joinery that requires a high degree of craftmanship this book uses simpler techniques that the non-professional can learn quickly. It is great for the "do-it-yourselfers" out there that want a book that makes sense! Highly recomended.

3 out of 5 stars Some great nuggets of info but..............2004-08-22

Some great nuggets of info but fails to deliver the "How-to" that the title hints at. I was dissappointed and am now looking for a "cookbook" or "how-to" style book.

I can not recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars A superb guide for beginners.......2004-08-10

Written by an author with more than thirty years of hands-on experience with timber framing, Timber Framing For The Rest Of Us is a simple home improvement guide to basic, practical methods for timber framing used by contractors, farmers, and owner-builders today. From procuring timbers of various woods or even recycled materials, to critical considerations of structure and design , to common fasteners, a detailed case study of a timber frame project, and much more, Timber Framing For The Rest Of Us is a superb guide for beginners who are ready to roll up their sleeves, do their homework, and enjoy the fruits of their hard-earned labors.

      Book Description

The renaissance of wood in architecture began already in the early 1990s following the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro. A lively interest in sustainable materials made wood particularly attractive and it became an important feature in the developing global ecology. Wood as a building material stands for a healthy interior environment, free of harmful toxic substances, with naturally balanced humidity and comfortable regulated temperatures. This volume documents in full technical detail 25 timber buildings in three main areas: residential buildings, holiday homes, and living and working. The individual projects cover a large spectrum of sizes, budgets, and types of construction, and they also show wood in combination with such materials as stone, concrete, and steel. The examples documented are from Germany, Austria, Switzerland, France, Belgium, Finland, Ireland, USA, Canada, China, Australia, and Brazil, and the architects include such renowned names as Mario Botta, Kengo Kuma and Baumschlager + Eberle.

      2 out of 5 stars Dissapointing.......2005-02-24

If you aren't an artist you may be frustrated by this one. I really didn't find this useful at all. I like great photos, but when it comes to paint books I want the artist to tell me HOW they did it, technique, paint mixing and all. Nice pictures won't help me mix paints or re-create the look in my own home. I have another book on faux finishing that tells you the ingredients. Ex: mix ochre with raw umber, 1 part glaze to 3 parts paint etc etc. I find that far more helpful. I think there are far better faux finish books on the market.

5 out of 5 stars FULL OF INNOVATIVE AND USEFUL IDEAS........2000-10-01

Thinking of re-painting a room or your entire house? Looking for innovative ways to transform your "inner image " of how it could look into realistic form and beauty? Read this book before you begin. It is filled with versatile ways to achieve exciting effect in the home with paint, either on the walls or on the furniture or on the floors. Ms Sloan presents painting techniques, the newest material, and provides a list of suppliers as well. Textured looks, pearlized paint, sparkle paint, how to use plaster and patterns make this a very savvy book. Glad I found it before I made a very expensive mess.

        4 out of 5 stars Fast Read.......2005-01-12

I thought that the story was interesting and it was a fast read. I am not usually crazy about first person narrative...but in this case it worked.

5 out of 5 stars The ultimate read for the summer!.......2004-04-07

Olivia St. Claire was hired as governess to fourteen-year-old Vanessa. As she traveled to Thornton Manor she met Sonia, a gypsy, who told her that she had a rendezvous with the Prince of Darkness. Olivia was determined to fulfill her promise to Sir Evan Thornton and teach Vanessa.

It was not long before Olivia realized that no one was normal in the manor. It also seemed as though someone was out to kill her! But was it handsome Sir Evan or the smooth Dr. Philip McAllister? Both paid her close attention. Or could it be Lady Thornton, Evan's mother, or perhaps Miss Hamilton, the companion?

***** The ultimate read for the Summer, if you love gothics, that is. This one had me guessing as to just who was the good guy and who was the bad until late into the novel. Great story. Well worth your time and money. *****

5 out of 5 stars A classic all the way!.......2003-07-26

There's mystery, magic, ghosts and romance in The House in Thornton Wood. In the vein of Mary Stewart and Daphne DuMaurier, Anne Knoll writes a gripping tale. When I had to put it down, I found myself hurrying to pick it back up again. If you like gothics, this is a must read. Sure to please!

5 out of 5 stars A gothic in the classic style!.......2002-05-03

I grew up reading gothics and love them very much. The House in Thornton Wood has all the elements of a great gothic, and Anne Knoll has a great writing style and sense of the genre. It has the right amount of suspense, supernatural, and romance. The heroine, Olivia, is caught between two very different men while she is on a collision course with her unknown past. The secret of the house in Thornton Wood is gradually revealed in a manner that draws you into the mystery without revealing too much, too soon. Excellent book that I could not put down. The Candlelight series has revived the gothics in a powerful way.

4 out of 5 stars remind readers of the golden age of Gothic romances.......2002-04-09

Desperately needing to earn money, Olivia St. Claire is ecstatic when trice widowed Sir Evan Thornton hires her as governess to his fourteen year old daughter Vanessa in Northumberland. A bit nervous about leaving London for the unknown northern most county and caring for her teenage charge, Olivia travels by coach to her destiny only to have a wheel break. Waiting for help, a gypsy recognizes Olivia as a kindred soul even though the latter hides her witch abilities to communicate with the dead.

After the gypsies surprisingly fix the wagon, a new passenger Dr. Philip McAllister joins Olivia inside the coach. She finds Philip a bit to bold in her innocence. After arriving and settling in at Thornton Manor, Olivia also finds her employer dark, brooding, and handsome. Both men court Olivia leaving her confused and wondering whom to trust with her heart and even more critical her soul as her channeling with the dead increases.

THE HOUSE IN THORNTON WOOD is a throwback novel that will remind readers of the golden age of Gothic romances. The story line contains all the classic elements that readers expect in a sub-genre novel: the innocent woman, the brooding dark gentleman, and the Poe-like house. Anne Knoll brings that and more together in a tale that will please readers who relish an old fashioned, but well written novel.

The principals of the Del Mano Gallery have presented an excellent photographic rendition of the extraordinary craftsmanship exhibited at their Los Angeles (Brentwood) gallery.

While the photo illustrations are excellent, the photos do not do justice to the actual visual representation of each piece. These works of art need to be seen first individually in order to appreciate their craftsmanship.

Although the Little House stories are traditionally seen as "girl" books, boys might be happily surprised if they take another peek at their sisters' shelves. Little House in the Big Woods--the first book of the series and Laura Ingalls Wilder's first children's book--is full of the thrills, chills, and spills typically associated with "boy" books. Any boy or girl who has fantasized about running off to live in the woods will find ample information in these pages to manage a Wisconsin snowstorm, a panther attack, or a wild sled ride with a pig as an uninvited guest. Every chapter divulges fascinatingly intricate, yet easy-to-read, details about pioneer life in the Midwest in the late 1800s, from bear-meat curing to maple-tree sapping to homemade bullet making.

Wilder's autobiographical tales ring with truth and excitement. Readers will receive a perfectly painless history lesson, and in fact will clamor for more. Beloved illustrator Garth Williams spent years researching young Laura's pioneering family. His soft-line illustrations bring to life the full, simple days and nights in the family's log cabin. No one can read just one Little House book! (Ages 9 to 12) --Emilie Coulter

        Book Description

        Where it all began.

Laura Ingalls lives on the edge of the Wisconsin forest with her family. They work long, hard days, and spend their evenings by the fire, listening to stories and music. While they're safe inside, enormous trees tower over their tiny log cabin, and wild bears and wolves roam the woods at night, making their pioneer life both dangerous and exciting.

I've read this book over and over. Just thinking about it gives me such a warm fuzzy feeling. All of the "Little House" books have had such a huge impact on my life. Thank you, Laura!

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful heartwarming story.......2007-09-27

Most kids read Little House on the Prairie first, but this book actually is the first book in the series. In this Little House story book, readers get a taste of the 1870s midwest and join Laura, her Ma, and her Pa, and her sisters at the little house in the big woods.

5 out of 5 stars An Absolutely Charming Story.......2007-08-14

Writen during the Great Depression, "Little House in the Big Woods" is Laura Ingalls Wilder's memoir of growing up in Wisconsin in the years immediately following the Civil War. The book chronicles a year in the life of Laura's family. The writing is absolutely charming in its simplicity and I found myself caught up in the details of the family's material culture. I was reminded of Eric Sloane's "Diary of an Early American Boy", another classic of the genre.

I think memoirs are better heard than read. The narrator, Cherry Jones is a charasmatic performer whose voice twinkles with humor and warmth. In addition, the recording also includes a violin accompaniment to Cherry Jones' singing of the many songs that appear in the story. This is a beautiful recording and I give it my highest recommendation.

My husband just finished reading this great book to our 4y/o daughter and she really liked it. In my opinion, the "Full Color" version is the best choice when reading this book to younger kids. This version uses high quality white paper with a glossy finish.

Laura Ingalls Wilder was born in 1867 into a warm and loving family. She lived in a log cabin, traveled across the country in a covered wagon and shared the story of her life in the classic Little House book series, which millions of readers have loved since 1932 when LITTLE HOUSE IN THE BIG WOODS was first published.

Because there was a period of Laura's life that she didn't include in her series, well-known author Cynthia Rylant wrote another Little House book called OLD TOWN IN THE GREEN GROVES to fill in the gap, and William Anderson penned LAURA INGALLS WILDER: A BIOGRAPHY. Within these 11 books, readers will discover an honest portrayal of the life of a pioneer girl --- from her travels as a toddler in a covered wagon to an airplane ride when she was elderly.

Aside from the excellent stories, the Little House books are full of fascinating facts. Have you ever wondered how the old-time settlers made butter? Here you will find out each step in the process, along with the surprising way that Mrs. Ingalls colored the butter yellow. When Laura's mother needed a vegetable grater, Laura's father made one by punching an old pan full of nail holes. When the family wanted to eat meat in the winter, Mr. Ingalls went out to the shed and hacked off a chunk of frozen meat with an ax.

Through good times and bad, sorrow and pleasure, danger and celebrations, the Ingalls faced hardships and fortunate times alike, united in grace, humor, love and hard work. It's a pleasure to join them in these tales, which are as relevant and gripping today as they were 75 years ago.

P.S. Attention, boys! Do you think this series is only for girls, since Laura is the main character in all of them except FARMER BOY? Think again. The Little House books are actually exciting, gritty survival stories filled with adventure and danger. I double-dog dare you to read just one of them (especially THE LONG WINTER) and not be hooked.
