Book Description
This comprehensive handbook, acclaimed when it was first published in 1976 as "one of the most useful reference manuals on diagnostic entomology yet produced," has now been completely revised and expanded to reflect recent advances in technology and the wealth of new information affecting the "Green Industry."
Augmented by 241 full-color plates, it gives the essential facts about more than 900 species of insects, mites, and other animals that injure woody ornamental plants in the United States and Canada, and provides means of quick visual identification of both the pests and the damage they cause.
Customer Reviews:
Well worth it!.......2002-08-14
This book is on my "short list" of essential references. Species are covered in clear, concise descriptions. This well organized volume makes hunting for similar species as easy as turning a page. The photos? I can't say enough about the clear, photos that make insect identification a good deal easier!
While an excellent book for the landscape professional, scientist, or advanced gardener, beginners might be a bit overwhelmed by the technical language and scientific names.
This is a much needed and fabulous manual........1998-06-18
When trying to identify a particular problem with growing trees or shrubs knowing what kinds of insects are possible culprits is a major step. This book gives us, in color photos and descriptions, most of the common larvae that can be found feeding on the particular plants. Even Entomology texts often refuse to deal with larvae of insects, keeping only the adults in the keys and descriptions (even though the adults are often not pests!). This guide will be a welcome addition to any plant clinic, grower, or Entomology professor or student's bookshelf.

Book Description
This book is the first major synthesis of theory and empirical knowledge regarding the ecology and epidemiology of infectious diseases in natural, unmanaged, animal and plant populations. Throughout the book, the contributors develop a dialogue between the patterns observed in empirical studies of disease in natural populations and the mathematical models used to dissect and examine the observed epidemiological patterns. The book is divided into a number of reviews and group reports by experts in various fields. Two sections synthesize important issues relating to the dynamics of microparasites and macroparasites, while the others discuss spatial patterns in disease dynamics and the evolutionary biology of parasites, pathogens and their hosts. This book will be of use to graduate students and specialists in mathematical biology and epidemiology.
Book Description
The Soil and Health was published in 1945, just before agricultural corporations surged to global proportions. Sir Albert Howard's work is a major inspiration to the growing organic and sustainable farming movement and a thought-provoking reminder of a road not taken in developing mainstream agriculture during the past half-century.
The central tenet of Howard's philosophy is that healthy soil, vegetation, animals, and humans are connected and that undernourishment of soil is the source of modern agricultural and health problems. In Howard's estimation, heavy reliance on chemical fertilizers will ultimately lead to widespread disease and destruction of vibrant communities. As the environmental and social consequences of industrial farming are being hotly debated, The Soil and Health remains vital to understanding what is at stake in the battle between chemical and organic farming.
Customer Reviews:
Great Early Book on Organic Agriculture.......2007-04-04
The Soil and Health is a wonderful book that is equal parts agricultural science and environmental advocacy, with just a dash of kooky Nature worship thrown in. Howard was a conventionally trained agricultural scientist in the late 19th and early to mid 20th century who was employed by the British government to bring modern industrial agriculture, based on chemical fertilizers, pesticides, fungicides and herbicides to Britain's tropical colonies. Soon, though, he realized the value of more traditional agricultural practices from India and China, especially in keeping the microbial, fungal and invertebrate life in the soil healthy.
If you believe in the value of organic agriculture, it is somewhat sad to see how little has changed since 1945. Howard confidently predicts in his book that organic methods based on compost would soon sweep the globe. Things have changed some, though. We can now buy "organic" labeled products in most markets in America, and I believe that more people have an appreciation for the importance of treating the earth well. This book does an excellent job of establishing and reinforcing that appreciation.

What St. John's wort is for depression, kava is for everyday anxiety. Native to exotic locales including the South Pacific island of Vanuatu, kava is a ritual and medicinal herb that's been used for centuries. It may not taste fabulous, but it effectively relieves tension and anxiety without affecting one's alertness or mental capacities or resulting in addictions, unlike prescription drugs such as Valium. Written by Hyla Cass, M.D., a well-known alternative medicine consultant and assistant professor of psychiatry at UCLA, Kava: Nature's Answer to Stress, Anxiety, and Insomnia is an intelligent, engaging reference to this increasingly popular herb.
Cass clearly explains the herb's chemical composition without delving into turgid scientific mumbo jumbo, or relying on lifeless quotes from scientific papers. She also thoroughly covers the herb's various forms--tinctures, tablets, pastes, powdered extract, and sprays--and suggests appropriate dosages for various treatments (for insomnia, for instance, you'd take a larger dose than if you just wanted to calm yourself before a plane flight). Cass also covers herbs that can be used in combination with kava, including valerian, licorice, and Ginkgo biloba; suggested dietary changes to improve overall mood and health; possible side effects; and techniques for managing stress in the first place, so antianxiety treatments aren't as needed. For anyone who wants to know all about what they're putting into their body, this is a solid primer.
Book Description
Discover Nature's Treatment for Stress, Anxiety, and Insomnia
Kava has been used ritually and medicinally in the islands of the South Pacific for centuries. Widely used in Europe, this amazing herb has been shown to relieve tension and anxiety while maintaining alertness. In larger doses kava promotes deep, restful sleep. Safe, natural, and inexpensive, kava is the perfect supplement for today's stress-filled lifestyle, and the ideal alternative to drugs such as Valium.
"Authoritative, fascinating, and richly readable, this book tells you what you want to know about kava and guides you in using it."
—James S. Gordon., M.D., Director of the Center for Mind-Body Medicine and author of Manifesto for a New Medicine
"An engaging and informative guide to understanding and using kava."
—Jack Canfield, coauthor of Chicken Soup for the Soul
"A valuable contribution to the body of kava literature. Sharing a seasoned clinician's positive experience, the authors cast a deservedly cool light on Valium and its chemical cousins, and let kava emerge as a safe, effective remedy for stress and anxiety."
—Chris Kilham, author of Kava, Medicine Hunting in Paradise
Customer Reviews:
Not in depth review; only anectdotal stories........2005-06-03
Kava is a great herb and you should know more about this herb. But if you are looking for more than stories that you can find yourself by browsing, this book is not for you.
This book is useless if you are looking for in depth review about kava. The only things in this book are stories and anectdotal experience from kava users that you can actually see on the internet.
The worst thing about this book is the author recommend the use of kava for hyperactive child to stoned them.
Kava is fabulous!.......2002-07-01
I have the pleasure of living in the only city in the country that has an authentic Kava Bar. I've chosen to remain anonymous to keep it underground, where is should stay. Kava is amazing and this book is just another testimonial of that fact. Kava does just what this book claims that it does...it cured my insomnia, and that's a fact. I just dread the day Kava becomes the next frapaccino, because I love it right where it is. It is illegal in Canada and Germany and probably many other places, so I'm hoping that that doesn't happen in the U.S. by people abusing this awesome herbal medication.
Someone Check My Pulse...Quick!.......2000-06-15
Under the spotlight of increasing popularity, Kava...or Kava Kava to those who think twice about using it, is the latest "miracle natural drug," alleged to relieve anxiety and stress without side effects or addiction. This book is not bad. It certainly is true to its title, discussing in depth how Kava is nature's answer to several common aliments. Yet, in our modern world where the newest "fad" goes from scientist to corporation to local mall vendor in a matter of months, the basic question is, "do these things really work?" Take a valium, and you will feel calm. Take a Xanax and your anxiety will be relieved. Most likely, however, you will became dpeendant on these drugs and eventually resort to robbing your local Dairy Queen to support you habit, unless friends intervene and get you to Rehab in time. So there is the true magic of Kava. No dependancy...no side-effects...it is legal...and it works? Well, this book certainly believes it does, and it backs this assertion with several well laid out and researched chapters. The problem is, is that Kava has been used for centuries in elaborate rituals on beautiful tropical islands as the sun is setting and soft island music plays in the background. Oh yea, and they use Kava. Now, if you are not relaxed after that, you are either already dead, or you might as well give up your dream of becomming stress free. Does Kava work in the bog city, with big city pressures? Will a Kava Latte be that far off, or even a Kava encrusted chicken breast? Nothing is certain as yet. If anything, this book is a step forward in educating the public on a possibly promising new alternative to presciption drugs. A message to the reader, however: Keep an open mind and remember, the Metabolife people know where you live.
Congratulations and gratitude.......1998-08-30
This book continues the progress that is being made in the effort to rediscover the essential links between natural medicine, the human personality, and true health. It can be read to further personal well being and it is a testament of how our leading western physicians are returning to honest, scientifically vaild remedies for what ails us. This book is not only about kava--though it is the most readable account of the traditional and modern uses of that wondrous herb--moreover it encourages us to find our own health in the matrix of Her Mystery that is our own deep self.
Best book on Kava I've seen!.......1998-08-25
Another exemplary achievement from Dr. Hyla Cass following hot on the heels of her outstanding book on St. John's Wort. Well-presented information on this herbal stress reliever, with case histories, research information, even a discussion on the growing, politics and economics of the kava industry. This includes attention to issues of sustainability, fairness in compensating the native South Sea Island growers and legal issues regarding herbal claims under DSHEA. Thorough coverage with something for everyone! A must-read. Highly recommended!
Book Description
Falling into that irresistible category of things we probably don't want to know, here is an up-close, personal look at insects as you've never seen them before. Striking a balance between the bizarre and the beautiful, Buzz features eye-popping and considerably larger-than-life electron microscope photographs that take us deep into the world of the buzzing, hopping, and crawling critters who live among us -- from the ants and wasps we thought we knew to dozens of other teeny-tiny creatures that teem beneath our notice. A lively and accessible text by Discover editor Josie Glausiusz explores the fascinating interactions of insects in a man-made world, and profiles of each insect introduce the workaday bugs that pollinate our crops, dispose of our trash, help solve crimes, and get stuck to the windshield. Readers be warned: You'll never look at your food, or your pillow, quite the same way again.
Customer Reviews:
A Delicious Shiver.......2004-05-29
This book reminds us we needn't invent science ficiton aliens to horrify and delight the human imagination. Every page of BUZZ provides that "sweet sensation of horror," that "shivery fascination with monsters" that so delights the likes of sociobiologist E.O. Wilson, who has made his famous career studying ants. And ants are in here, as well as flies, spiders, beetles, wasps and scores of other impossibly strange, fascinating invertebrates. They are grouped in this book because this "alien" universe is our own. All of these creatures live around, and sometimes right ON us.
For which we should rejoice, as the author, Discover editor Josie Glausiusz, eloquently reminds us. Without many of these insects, our beautiful green world would be impossible for us to inhabit. Insects pollinate our crops, feed everyone from birds to fish (and even us), recycle the bodies of the dead and the excreta of the living. They give us honey, beeswax, silk, and the stunning delights of butterfly wings and cricket song. And they have stirred human imaginations for millennia, the muse inspiring great works in every sort of art, from Biblical passages on mosquitoes and ants to Rimsky-Korsakov's dazzling "The Flight of the Bumblebee."
Bugs are good. Of the estimated 9 million species, we learn, only perhaps 1.5 percent of them cause us any problems. Granted, that small percentage includes some that can be seriously annoying--lice, mosquitoes, bed bugs. They're in here, too--but even they can seem pretty enchanting, when illuminated by Glausiusz's lively, fact-packed prose and the electron miscrope that yields the book's breathtaking photographs.
This is the sort of book you'll often read aloud to anyone else in the room--and if no one is there you'll have to call someone up. "Hey--did you know that the Colorado potato beetle was once the focus of a failed German plot to target Britain with bug-bombs?" Need a recipe for locusts, or presentation ideas for serving Superworm larvae? That's in here, too. On these pages, you'll meet bugs who eat skin flakes (house dust mites), bugs who cure skin ulcers (the maggots of the green blowfly) and bugs who kick footballs, draw chariots and turn carousels (fleas.)
Some of these critters are downright cute. Take the drugstore beetle on page 47, hiding coyly behind a breadcrumb. (Its Latin name, we learn, means "hidden.") The Indian meal moth looks positively pensive in its portrait atop a raisin. Nearly every page features a stunning portrait by Munich-base photogrpaher Volker Steger. But most of them, taken with a scanning electron microscope and computer-colorized to distinguish the insects' features, portray a wierd majesty that outshines even that of the dinosaurs. For unlike those extinct giants, these minaitures live among us daily, a source of deep and thrilling mystery near at hand.
WEIRD AND WONDERFUL...........2004-05-05
"BUZZ" truly takes off!! The authors of this wonderful new book offer one a unique excursion to an insectoid universe paralleling our own...The photographs are astounding, revealing the beautiful and the bizarre in incredible, illuminating detail- insect images that continually astound, beguile and startle.
The book also presents a fascinating accompanying text that is compelling in its vast sweep and variety - literary, historical, cultural,scientific- a rich compendium of insect lives, loves and lore, both serious and whimsical.
I would highly recommend this book to readers of all ages who are curious about the world we share with the insects that creep, crawl and cavort around us!
Fabulous & Fascinating.......2004-04-17
Absolutely fabulous book -- constantly amazed me at the myriad strange interactions between us humans & insects. It seemed as though every page reveals something new, entirely unexpected, and jaw-dropping. The writing is extremely clear, and makes for a very easy read, but doesn't spare those juicy little tidbits & details that really make it fun. I went back & picked up an extra copy for a nephew -- great gift suggestion.

Book Description
Phoma is a genus of fungi within the Coelomycetes. These fungi are commonly and frequently recovered in culture from all ecological situations, but are very difficult to identify. There has been a great need for a practical manual to aid such identification, and this book will fill that gap. It provides line drawings and keys for the identification of common pathogenic and saprotrophic species of Phoma in vitro, with references to additional diagnostic literature and documentation of the numerous synonyms formerly used in the phytopathological literature.

Life in the Treetops: Adventures of a Woman in Field Biology (Nota Bene Series)
ASIN: 0124576508 |
Book Description
For decades, researchers have been interested in the structure, function and inhabitants of forest canopies, but unfortunately, a large portion of this fascinating ecosystem was inaccessible. Recently, with the use of balloons, dirigibles, cranes, towers, suspended catwalks, and a variety of modern climbing equipment, scientists have begun to penetrate this dense foliage, allowing for a detailed, authoritative account of this enchanting world.
Forest Canopies synthesizes the newly compiled data on canopy-dwelling organisms, including insects and other arthropods, lizards, birds, mammals, and, of course, the plants that both form and inhabit this unique aerial ecosystem.
Key Features
* Foreword by Thomas E. Lovejoy
* First synthesis of research into this previously unchartered forest region
* Details innovative techniques for the study of the canopy
* Describes the structure, function, and biodiversity of canopy ecosystems
* Ideal reading for botanists, naturalists, ecologists, and zoologists, or anyone interested in preserving the beauty of these great forests

A great canopy primer!.......2002-02-22
One of best synopsis of the current to near current canopy research topics, struggles, and future agendas! Lowman and Nadkarni continue to out do themselves with this suberbly edited book. Highly recommended for anyone interested in forest ecology and forest canopies who aren't afraid to look at some graphs. You'll learn something....
Exhaustive, Intriguing, and Well researched.......2000-06-26
I recently used this book for an indepedent study on Canopy Ecology and found it abosutley indispensible. Lowman and Nadkarni used the work of such big name scientists as Nigel Stork and Terry Erwin to assemble an array of canopy topics including access, structure, nutrient cycling, species compossition, epihyte and hemiephyte ecology, and even ethnobotany. Each chapter is clear cut and informative and the book does not waste space with cheesy fru-fru. Of particular interest to the aspiring canopy researcher is the suggestions for new avenues of research given at the end of almost every chapter.

The most comprehensive book on the subject to date. This book takes you into a world where few have been before, the forest canopy! A cutting edge book for a cutting edge field!

An excellent text for amateur growers........2004-08-29
I use this book constantly when diagnosing plant diseases in African violets. The language is scientific and can be a bit daunting, but non-scientists like me can learn a great deal. The photo section is very specific and helpful. No cures are listed, but once a grower knows exactly which disease is active, it is easier to search out the cure. I heartily recommend it!
