Book Description

Sustainable land development strategies based on scientific information

Land and Natural Development (LAND) Code offers a pioneering method to develop sites in harmony with natural processes that is solidly based on peer-reviewed scientific findings. While the LAND Code can be readily used in conjunction with LEED, EPA, and other guidelines, it features several unique characteristics, including:

After an introduction, the book begins with chapters covering water, soil, air, living resources, energy, and materials. Throughout these chapters, the authors recommend tested and proven strategies that minimize disruption of the natural processes. Each chapter provides background, describes benefits for both developers and ecosystems, and recommends protective strategies in simple, non-technical language (a glossary is provided explaining all terms not in common usage). A toolbox of environmental engineering methods to implement the strategies follows, and the final chapter of the book provides a series of examples of actual development projects in which a variety of approaches have successfully attained sustainable development. With its emphasis on scientific understanding, the LAND Code offers you the information needed to make and implement decisions for ecologically sound land development.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars every developer should be given a copy of this book.......2007-08-04

Balmori and Benoit are visionaries on the all-important issue of land development. Their commonsensical approach should guide the behavior of all land policy people--real estate agents, bankers, regional and local zoning commissions AND developers. Doing the "green" thing is cheaper and better, always.

    Book Description

All coastal areas are facing a growing range of stresses and shocks, the scale of which now poses threats to the resilience of both human and environmental coastal systems. Responsible agencies are seeking better ways of managing the causes and consequences of the environmental change process in coastal zones. This volume discusses the basic principles underpinning a more integrated approach to coastal management and highlights the obstacles that may be met in practice in both developed and developing countries. Successful strategies will have to encompass all the elements of management, from planning and design through financing and implementation, as highlighted in this book. This book includes a CD-ROM with computer visualisation of field data and water quality modelling. There are also movie clips of spectacular scenes.

    Book Description

"...a clarion call to society for the need to balance human demands with the needs of our world's rivers, the arterial system of life on this planet. The authors describe the vanguard movement to restore rivers and to reconnect rivers with their flood plains, portraying the under-appreciated life support services our rivers perform, their ecological function, and the threats to riverine ecosystems." -MIKE DOMBECK, CHIEF EMERITUS OF THE U.S. FOREST SERVICE AND PIONEER PROFESSOR OF GLOBAL ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT AT THE UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN-STEVENS POINT

"Finally! A book that pays attention to flow, not just pollutants, as central to river restoration. Blending science and readability, Rivers for Life offers refreshing insights into allocating limited water to meet the needs of humans and rivers." -JAMES R. KARR, PROFESSOR, UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON, SEATTLE

The conventional approach to river protection has focused on water quality and maintaining some "minimum" flow that was thought necessary to ensure the viability of a river. In recent years, however, scientific research has underscored the idea that the ecological health of a river system depends not on a minimum amount of water at any one time but on the naturally variable quantity and timing of flows throughout the year.

In Rivers for Life, leading water experts Sandra Postel and Brian Richter explain why restoring and preserving more natural river flows are key to sustaining freshwater biodiversity and healthy river systems, and describe innovative policies, scientific approaches, and management reforms for achieving those goals. Sandra Postel and Brian Richter: explain the value of healthy rivers to human and ecosystem health; describe the ecological processes that support river ecosystems and how they have been disrupted by dams, diversions, and other alterations; consider the scientific basis for determining how much water a river needs; examine new management paradigms focused on restoring flow patterns and sustaining ecological health; assess the policy options available for managing rivers and other freshwater systems; explore building blocks for better river governance

Sandra Postel and Brian Richter offer case studies of river management from the United States (the San Pedro, Green, and Missouri), Australia (the Brisbane), and South Africa (the Sabie), along with numerous examples of new and innovative policy approaches that are being implemented in those and other countries.

Rivers for Life presents a global perspective on the challenges of managing water for people and nature, with a concise yet comprehensive overview of the relevant science, policy, and management issues. It presents exciting and inspirational information for anyone concerned with water policy, planning and management, river conservation, freshwater biodiversity, or related topics.

    4 out of 5 stars A Gentle Warrior.......2005-10-26

Sandra Postel writes in a clear and lyrical style which is entertaining to read. Her content is not overly technical nor is it patronisingly simplistic. Postel has a pleasing habit of rejecting jargon and buzz phrases.

I found her assertions, research and conclusions to be creditable. I enjoyed the breadth of the discussion.
She is not strident nor angry in her criticism of individuals or corporations, rather she lets good science do her talking.

Postel enjoys a wide audience and is often represented in university reading lists. She is one of the more enjoyable reads to be found there.

4 out of 5 stars a wisdom runs through it.......2004-03-13

This book, like previous works by Sandra Postel, is a clarion warning call about the dangers in how we have been managing our waters. The message from this book that is of particular importance, is that truly successful, and therefore sustainable, environmental management is really just as much about managing people as it is about managing natural systems. For this reason, I have placed this important book on the reading list for my watershed management course at Harvard. And also, I am grateful that Sandra Postel agreed to write a front-end blurb for my recently published (by Green Frigate Books) book entitled Deep Immersion: The Experience of Water.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars This is an excellent book.......2001-06-08

I have reviewed the content of the book and it is excellent. With some good grounding knowledge of real estate development (for example reading the book "real estate development - principles & process" by Gayle Berens et al), this book will make you very knowledgeable in real estate, whether you are buying, building or managing a proprty.

I bought the book and I am happy with it...I just hope that the author or the publisher will provide a CD with all the calculation tables included in the next edition of the book. This shortcoming does not diminish the usefulness of the book. Buy it, read it and keep it.

    4 out of 5 stars Almost Comprehensive.......2000-05-22

This is an excellent book as far as it goes, which is a lot farther than any other real estate development book of which I'm aware. This book is for those who want the equivalent of a Masters Degree in real estate, and is not geared to those without a backgroung in the business. I'm president of a development company, and we used this book to review our own methods, and we have consequently improved our effectiveness significantly. Nevertheless, in this electronic age, not to have a cd-rom of the spreadsheets he uses is a significant drawback to this otherwise excellent book

4 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and Well Structured Book.......2000-04-27

I have found this book to be very useful as a master checklist and general reference guide. The book is not intended for those who might be looking for case studies and historical data, but rather for those seeking an exhaustive overview of the sequence of steps and array of interconnected tasks in a generic development program.

5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive guide to all phases of development.......1999-03-21

This at-first daunting volume provides an exhaustively detailed analysis of the development process from planning to cash-out. Zuckerman and Blevins offer a highly readable, highly useful and comprehensive guide to all phases of development. Beginning with the fundamentals of planning, site selection and dealing with the government, the 700-plus page text details number crunching, and finance before leading a step-by-step tour of the construction process. Common sense marketing advice and instruction on the maximization of return follow. The final chapter on responding to the changing cycles of the real estate industry may be worth the hefty price of this hefty book all by itself. Real Estate Development Workbook and Manual is jam-packed with lists, checklists and forms. One list, for example, points to every possible item for OSHA compliance. A real estate glossary to end all glossaries brings up the rear. Possibly the most fascinating part of the book is a huge pull-out chart called a Development Procedural Matrix Diagram. Its first effect is to have the reader considering taking up something a little simpler, like brain surgery. After some study, however, the matrix becomes an invaluable planning tool for the developer. By following the matrix it just might be impossible to miss a single step or fail to consider a single important issue in the development process. If real estate development is your business, this book would be a "must-have" even at twice the price.

2 out of 5 stars Very General materials with no useable specifics.......1998-12-09

This book is jammed pack. However, it is not jammed pack with very much useful information. It is all exteremly general in nature. I was hoping for a "how to"/"what to watch for" and all I got was 500+ pages of general "You should have a financial plan before inversting..." type of advice. Very disappointing for the cost.

          Book Description

This book examines in detail the resource management problems and challenges posed by the intensification of the environmental change process in coastal areas around the globe. The analysis deployed is by and large buttressed by methods and techniques drawn from social science disciplines: economics, geography, and psychology. However, the overall approach adopted is multidisciplinary with additional contributions from the natural sciences and statistics. The key concept developed is that of ecosystem function value diversity and its management policy analogue, ecosystem integrity maintenance, and the consequent sustainable utilisation of coastal system assets. The functioning of healthy ecosystems generates a range of outputs which society values. The individual chapters analyse and evaluate a range of coastal and water resource functions across different temporal and spatial scales.

          Book Description

To fully analyze the relationship between water management, environmental conditions and public policy, this book reviews the development of water management and evaluates it from the perspective of the quality of the natural environment. Examples are drawn from around the world, and range from local watershed management to international river basin planning, with emphasis placed on integrative approaches. Successful water management is crucial for the proper operation of natural environmental systems and for the support of human society.

          Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars integrated water management.......2004-03-14

This book provides a concise and catholic introduction to sane ways in which to manage water that are sustainable and respective
to the element critical for life. The many practical examples drawn from around the world perfectly augment the theoretical text of Wescoat and White. Of particular interest are those examples that focus on India and other developing nations. I plan to place this text on the reading list for my watershed management course at Harvard next year. And for all these reasons I am grateful that Jim Wescoat agreed to write one of the front-end review blurbs for my recently published book Deep Immersion: The Experience of Water.

            Book Description

Over the past two decades, great strides have been made on a wide variety of environmental fronts. Air and water quality have improved significantly, certain endangered species are on the road to recovery, and there is a marked increase in environmental awareness among the general population. Yet at the same time, little has changed in our approach toward how land is used.

Henry L. Diamond and Patrick F. Noonan, two preeminent figures in the modern conservation movement, examine that unfortunate circumstance as they provide a broad overview of major land use issues of the past twenty-five years and a ten-point agenda for future action. They look at key trends and patterns of the past two decades, and consider what can be done to help communities throughout the country accomodate growth in better, more environmentally sound, more fiscally responsible ways.

Diamond and Noonan base the synthesis and analysis featured in the first part of the book in large part on a series of papers from leading scholars, public officials, and practitioners that are included in their entirety in the second part of the book. The contributors provide and in-depth look at important topic, including:

              Book Description

Water is a key component of critical ecosystems, a marketable commodity, a foundation of local communities and cultures, and a powerful means of social control. It has become a source of contentious politics and social controversy on a global scale, and the management of water conflicts is one of the biggest challenges in the effort to achieve effective global environmental governance.

In Governing Water, Ken Conca examines political struggles to create a global framework for the governance of water. Threats to the world's rivers, watersheds, and critical freshwater ecosystems have resisted the establishment of effective global agreements through intergovernmental bargaining because the conditions for successful interstate cooperation -- effective state authority, stable knowledge frameworks, and a territorialized understanding of nature -- cannot be imposed upon water controversies. But while interstate water diplomacy has faltered, less formalized institutions -- socially and politically embedded rules, roles, and practices -- have emerged to help shape water governance locally and globally.

Conca examines the politics of these institutions, presenting a framework for understanding global environmental governance based on key institutional presumptions about territoriality, authority, and knowledge. He maps four distinct processes of institution building: formal international regimes for shared rivers; international networking among water experts and professionals; social movements opposing the construction of large dams; and the struggle surrounding transnational water "marketization." These cases illustrate the potential for alternative institutional forms in situations where traditional interstate regimes are ineffective.
