5 out of 5 stars Everyone should read this!.......2005-11-12

This is one of my all time favorite books--even though much of it I had to read and re-read several times to get a clear understanding of some of the points it makes. I believe everyone should read this...several times---it has some truly fascinating information in it and is an excelent book to really get you thinking and appreciating the nature of this planet we live on!

5 out of 5 stars Understand and how to treat water........2005-09-21

If somebody have some interest in water must read that book.
It give great insights of how we should consider water and how to use it.Schauberger is the pioneer on what really water is,and with all of other things i read on that subject i think this is the one to start with. Many research today lead to the way Schauberger saw water many years ago.It prove too that you don't need to be a scientist to understand water.Great reading.

5 out of 5 stars enlightened textbook for environmental studies.......2003-02-13

Living Energies gives the understandings necessary for revitalizing Planet Earth -- for understanding which human actions either enhance or destroy the vitality of our forests, soils, air and water. I tell people about Living Energies more often than I promote my own books! Living Energies is the best book in the world for understanding the extensive wisdom of the Austrian forester and genius Viktor Schauberger. Academics, politicians and many other decision-makers should all study this book, if they can set aside any prejudices they might have regarding some inclusions of spirituality in a science book. It's the big picture!

5 out of 5 stars IF you only buy one Schauberger book - get this one!.......2002-11-24

I have every book written by Callum Coats on the Schauberger subject. This book, if you only buy one of them, is the definative book to get. I would basically call it a complet Schauberger reference work, as it contains all of the material that will later be expanded in the "Eco-Technology" series - which contain more thorough descriptions of Viktor's work. This book is great on its own, however, and will not dissapoint anyone interested in learning more about the "water wizard" - Viktor Schauberger. I highly recommend this book as a great starting point for study on everything from understanding the vortex, implosion technology, water-power in general, Schauberger's inventions, his forestry upbringing, and as a general biography, this book can't be beat.

5 out of 5 stars The Genius of the Last True Alchemist.......2002-07-27

(First I should say that my copy of this book, by the same publisher, has a different sub-title than the one listed. Also, it's my understanding that this publisher (Gateways) was bought out, and I very much suspect that the book now in print by New leaf is more-or-less exactly the same as this one. Buy it!!)
Viktor Schauberger came from a long line of Austrian foresters, whose family motto was Fidus in Silvus Silentibus: "Faith in the Silent Forests." It's almost as if the trees & rivers were in his blood. His profound power of observation permitted him to see what others overlooked, and to draw conclusions that were both practical and utterly unique. He eschewed a university education because he knew it would deaden his mind, and he had learned enough in school already to find deep disagreement with a number of sacrosanct theories. He is probably best known (for those few who know of him) for his profound observations of water as a living being - most particulary the natural vortical inner motion of rivers, and their need to meander and maintain low temperatures, and the natural formation of springs. He also deeply understood the nature and needs of trees - which, in essence, create water, and have a tremendous effect on weather systems.
Because Viktor's observations, discoveries and inventions were so unique, and outside the strictures of establishment science, he had to create his own terminology. In this sense he was very much like the old alchemists, who had to coin new words for their discoveries. And too, Viktor's view of the elements was unlike any other. For example, with the exception of oxygen and hydrogen, he termed all the other elements "carbones." In fact his whole vision, with all of its extraordinary explication, is alchemical - not the least because it includes Spirit. It deals with natural transformations and energies: his dictum was "Comprehend and copy nature!"
Probably his greatest gift to us was his recognition of implosion, rather than explosion, as the natural, harmless means of releasing/creating energy, and he did much work in this area.
Not suprisingly he was much maligned by the powerful status quo. His life was fraught with treachery and great adversity.
Read this book and learn about a truly great man. You'll find it very exciting.

5 out of 5 stars The Living Landscape.......2002-10-14

The Living Landscape has made a lasting contribution to ecological planning through its detailed documentation of this planning process and thoughtful comparison of the process's application in case studies. Dr. Steiner demonstrates in his book that ecological planning is just not a static plan-making process, but rather a dynamic process that requires consistent and meaningful input from stakeholders. In addition, he sees plan-making as a process that has implications for different scales of the environment, from the nation to the neighborhood. He stresses that the ecological planning process does not end when the plan is finished, but rather the process continues through the linkage of planning concepts to physical design. Given the strengths of this book, it is an essential volume for the library of any professional or student in the disciplines of the built environment and environmental management.

5 out of 5 stars A Unique and Useful Contribution.......2002-05-06

It is a rare planning book that outlines a detailed process for guiding landscape change in a deliberate and ecologically sound manner. The Living Landscape accomplishes this in a robust, clear and convincing way. The second edition improves on the first by including more landscape design information, updating case studies, and deepening the planning method (for instance, by including more on the use of Geographic Information Systems). The liberal use of cases is a strong asset of the book; each step in the ecological planning process is illustrated and explained by way of 'stories' from real places around North America. The Living Landscape is useful reading for students and practitioners in landscape architecture, architecture, environmental planning and natural resource management.

5 out of 5 stars From a landscape for living to a living landscape.......2002-05-05

The second edition of The Living Landscape has came out nine years after the first. The first, in fact, was published in 1991, it received an ASLA Merit Award for Communications in 1993, and then it was translated into Italian in 1994, where it was very well received among scholars and students of planning as well as in the schools of architecture throughout the country.
The very first difference between the two editions is the publishing series. The first did not form part of a series while the second is now in the McGraw-Hill "Professional Architecture" series. The Professional Architecture series is devoted to giving helpful tools to practitioners who are on the field and The Living Landscape provides a very wide set of how-to and why-to-do-it instructions, where-to-keep information, and best practices examples to learn from, organized around an eleven-step Ecological Planning Model. I consider The Living Landscape a refined, high-level professional handbook devoted to enhance the toolbox of any present or future planning practitioners.
The Living Landscape II edition, as was the first, is built around a scheme of eleven steps called "Ecological Planning Method" briefly presented in the first chapter and used as a step-by-step pattern to guide readers into the organization of a planning process. The "Ecological Planning Method" is a framework for presenting information to decision-makers, and to display "a common language, a common method among all those concerned about social equity and ecological parity" (p. 9). The approach to planning presented by Steiner is innovative for two reasons. The first is the incorporation of ecology in planning - briefly "the use of biophysical and sociocultural information to suggest opportunities and constraints for decision making about the use of the landscape" (pp. 9-10). The second reason is the author's stress on the citizen's involvement in almost every step of his method. These two issues, even if they are the prime themes of the book, are prudently embedded into the body of the full text. Ecology and citizen involvement are the leitmotif of the entire book which is composed of a precise combination of techniques and tools presentation, useful references to literature, light - but effective - revocations of the theoretical frameworks on the issues, and application examples deriving from real plans or projects.
The eleven-step Ecological Planning Model goes from the identification of problems and opportunities (step 1) and the establishment of goals (2) to inventories and analysis at regional (3) and local level (4). It proceeds with the realization of detailed studies (5) and the definition of planning concepts (6). The landscape plan (7) follows and it is directly assessed and criticized by citizens (8), who are involved and educated along the whole process-phasing. Design exploration (9) comes next and the study of the implementation of the plan and projects (10) precedes the administration (11) that is the last step of the model. The Ecological Planning Model is linear in its descriptions (the book chapters - excluding the introduction and the conclusion - are devoted to deepen every single step, with some minor exceptions), but the steps are strongly interactive. In the graphic scheme of the model (p. 11), solid and dashed arrows between the steps emphasize the necessity and the opportunity of feedback and retroactions in order to monitor the previous results.
Citizen involvement is the center of the model. Almost every step is addressed to inhabitants and a systematic educational and citizen involvement effort occurs throughout the process. The model, between the last step - administration - and the first - problem and/or opportunity identification -, presents a dashed arrow in order to accent that problems and opportunities facing the region and the goals addressed that may be altered by time, occurrences and circumstances.
Compared to the first edition, the structure of the Ecological Planning Model and of the book contents remains unchanged in the second, but the book has some 120 more pages. Graphic design of tables and figures has been enhanced - a four-color page section was added to present the GIS maps of the Desert View Tri-Villages Area (Arizona) and of the Camp Pendleton study area (California), two of the many new examples used along the entire book. New photographs, mostly authored by Steiner, follow the entire text. Sources and references have been updated including recent books and articles on the matters. New examples, as said before, have been included in this edition to present more recent application of techniques and tools explained and illustrated along the text. The final glossary, one of the many useful tools of the book, has been enlarged with 46 new entries bringing the total to 350.

4 out of 5 stars Ecological plannnig has a future with this effort ........2002-04-14

I am a graduate student in landscape ecological planning. I would recommend Dr. Steiner's book for students, professionals and the lay leaders interested in making a difference in their community. The idea of planning is sometimes hard to grasp by communities that are ruled by economics and development, not ecology. Dr. Steiner shows us step by step how to include ecology into communities and how that may give us other alternatives that we may not have considered.

The use of case studies in this book enhances the practical application of ecological planning in real world situations.

I would recommend this book for anyone interested in ecology, planning or being part of your community's future.

3 out of 5 stars Book fails to make the connection.......2002-01-23

I picked up a copy of "the living landscape" at the local library thinking I was on to something interesting. Instead, I found the book to be a rehash of old, simple ideas under the cloak of a "sexy", progressive title. I am a practicing environmental planner and must admit that I was even fooled by the picture on the cover--How in the world is a linear mono-cultural hedgerow of trees that line an walkway even remotely a just symbol of "ecological planning"? The picture seems to satisfy the landscape architect's need to have order-- Ecology is anything but linear or orderly.

I must be fair. The book is well writen and offers students in environmental planning a good introduction to landscape planning with some environmenatl emphasis. However, in my opinion, I don't believe that the book does justice or furthers the progressive concept of "ecological" planning, as defined by the likes of the late Ian McHarg.

I enjoyed it very much.

5 out of 5 stars Picture Perfect Heaven!.......2007-05-14

This is the perfect book for those of us who are James Herriot junkies! I had just finished re-reading the four Herriot books in the American series, and found it great fun to read Jim Harriot's own words describing so many of the scenes in the books, and in the TV series.

5 out of 5 stars Probably terrific in hardcover.......2007-03-09

I put five stars here because I'm sure the hardcover edition rates it. I thought I was ordering hardcover, but got a very cheap paperback instead. This is a book that NEEDS big pages and color pictures; forget about the paperback edition. I tossed it.

5 out of 5 stars Review of James Herriot's Yorkshire.......2007-01-04

Having never been to England, this book with its wonderful pictures was a real treat. Herriot gives his own commentary on all the locations pictured. It was very enjoyable reading.

5 out of 5 stars A must-have for any James Herriot fan.......2006-09-15

James Herriot, actually James Alfred Wight (1916-95), a native of Glasgow, Scotland, qualified as a veterinarian at 23 years of age, and quickly fell with his new location of Yorkshire. Beginning in 1970, James began to write books, reaching into his years of experience as a vet, and spinning out enthralling and entertaining stories of things that did happen and things that might have happened on the Yorkshire Dales. He so loving described his little world, that before long people around the globe began searching maps for his beloved Darrowby, and found...nothing! Like much in James stories Darrowby is a composite of real locations and the Dales of his imagination.

In this book, which was first published in 1979, James takes the reader through the real Yorkshire Dales, telling all about its rugged and captivating beauty. Overall, I found this to be a fascinating read. James deeply loved the Yorkshire Dales, and this book definitely brings that through. With each page, you can see the Dales through his eyes, and it will definitely make you want to go see it! This is a great book, a must-have for any James Herriot fan, and I highly recommend it!

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars dutch is har.......2007-03-09

Not too bad of an item. It is what it is. I highly recommend following along with the book. I don't see how anyone would learn this in the time it takes to fly there, but the phrases are useful, and it is enough to learn to be polite. Other than the title being a bit decieving. The product itself is pretty good.

3 out of 5 stars Takes longer than 1 flight.......2005-10-13

This CD is just for Basic dutch, but that's quite alot to learn even on long flight. Maybe I'm retarded, but after about a week of listening in my car daily, I retained about 80% of the phrases and words.
Ironically, people in the Nederlands speak English as a second language. So Listen to chapter 2, "Sprecken ya Anals?" (you speak English?) is all you need. I did pretty well talking dutch and it did impress my fellow travelers. I did introduce my buddy as my girlfriend a bit too many times, funny though.

5 out of 5 stars Does Just What it Intends To.......2003-08-20

An excellent quick introduction to Dutch, this CD doesn't pretend to give you a complete grounding in Dutch, but teaches you the important phrases you need when travelling in the Netherlands (where is the train station? How much is it? Good morning, etc.). One of the things I liked about it was, it was short and simple, short enough to listen to on the airplane (hence the name). After all, most people in the Netherlands speak very good English. I just wanted to learn enough Dutch to be courteous. Although the packaging said you can use it without the accompanying booklet, I wouldn't advise it! The phrases are spoken once without being repeated, and I needed the book to keep up. Besides, its useful to know how Dutch looks written.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Not the place to start........2007-04-19

As some of the other reviewers noted, Hungarian is a unique language. It is not related to the other Central European languages, it is not derived from Latin. Heck, it isn't Indo-European.
This is important when considering what to buy when trying to learn the language in that it means: 1. you are not going to recognize individual words because they are not similar to the same word in French, Italian, Spanish, German or English and 2. you are not going to be familiar with the vowel or the consonants. There are sounds unknown to English in Hungarian.
So why am I babbling on about this? One of the first phrase this ill-thought teaching method tries to teach you is " I don't speak Hungarian very well". Or Nem nagyam beszelek magyarul. They say it once (at normal speaking rate!), give you time to register just how completely unprepared you are to repeat what you just heard and then they move on to the next phrase. I kid thee not. I would bet that sometimes as they were recording this stuff they found it hard not to laugh.
The third section does cover numbers and is probably the most useful section of the CD. One word at a time when learning this unique language is about right. I have a Hungarian neighbor and when she (w/ infinite patience) tries to teach me words, I usually require three or four attempts to get them right.
They are no sections devoted to individual pronouns, verbs, etc. There are sections (like the one on restaurants) where they give you individual words like plate, etc. Those are useful. The book is a necessity the first few times you listen to each section. The phonetic pronunciations are essential and help you to pick up on things like the Hungarian tendency to stress the first syllable. And the book helps you to pick up on individual words.
I guess that what I am saying is that this is not necessarily a bad product. It is certainly not what I would recommend to anyone that needs a quick intro to this language. When I find that product, I will review it.

4 out of 5 stars Worth every Forint.......2007-04-09

I wouldn't wait for the flight, but I listened to these tapes for a couple of months on my commute before going to Hungary and it was very helpful. Some suggestions. It would be more helpful if you begin not just by listening, but by sitting down with the book and getting used to the written word. Then once familiar, listening can be more fruitful. I managed to master a few important phrases like Hello, yes, no, I don't speak Hungarian, do you speak English, excuse me, how much, where is.. and sorry. But if I could do it again, I would have made a more concerted effort to learn my numbers (at least to 5) and as much of the CD as possible. It is only one CD, but it covers a lot of material. I believe that if you memorized everything in the CD, you would do very well. Keep in mind that there is a fair amount of English used in Hungary, it seems to be the common language between all non-English tourists, but it helps to learn a little Magyar, and I wholeheartedly recommend this CD.

1 out of 5 stars In-flight Hungaruab: :Learn Before You Land.......2006-11-14

Lousy: for example, they quickly give you the pronounciation (only once) and do not leave adequate time for you to consider what was just pronounced. THIS IS ESPECIALLY IMPORTANT FOR HUNGARIAN BECAUSE IT IS A VERY UNIQUE LANGUAGE.

I have tried othr In-flight languages and find them barely acceptable. If you already knew most of the words...they may be able to help you pronounce them...BUT only if the example was repeated a couple of times before going to the next word.

4 out of 5 stars In-Flight Hungarian: Learn Before You Land.......2006-08-14

It's great! I learned quite a few Hungarian words in just a few days.

4 out of 5 stars Basic & Elementry words to help you get by.......2006-03-31

20 page booklet, accompanied with a CD. This booklet contains the basic essential words/phrases you'll need to communicate, but I wish they had some more.
The CD is ok, but the Hungarian prases are being said a bit too fast, as such quite often you miss it, though, looking at the booklet at the same time can help a lot.
Overall, if you go to Hungary, this set (booklet & CD) can help you communicate using basic words. And the price is fair also.

Book Description

What in American society has changed so dramatically that nearly 60 percent of us are now overweight, plunging the nation into what the surgeon general calls an "epidemic of obesity"? Greg Critser engages every aspect of American life - class, politics, culture, and economics - to show how we have made ourselves the second fattest people on the planet (after South Sea Islanders). Fat Land highlights the groundbreaking research that implicates cheap fats and sugars as the alarming new metabolic factor making our calories stick and shows how and why children are too often the chief metabolic victims of such foods. No one else writing on fat America takes as hard a line as Critser on the institutionalized lies we've been telling ourselves about how much we can eat and how little we can exercise. His expose of the Los Angeles schools' opening of the nutritional floodgates in the lunchroom and his examination of the political and cultural forces that have set the bar on American fitness low and then lower, are both discerning reporting and impassioned wake-up calls. Disarmingly funny, Fat Land leaves no diet book - including Dr. Atkins's - unturned. Fashions, both leisure and street, and American-style religion are subject to Critser's gimlet eye as well. Memorably, Fat Land takes on baby-boomer parenting shibboleths - that young children won't eat past the point of being full and that the dinner table isn't the place to talk about food rules - and gives advice many families will use to lose. Critser's brilliantly drawn futuristic portrait of a Fat America just around the corner and his all too contemporary foray into the diabetes ward of a major children's hospital make Fat Land a chilling but brilliantly rendered portrait of the cost in human lives - many of them very young lives - of America's obesity epidemic.

4 out of 5 stars The New Cultural Obesity.......2007-09-12

When I returned from the Peace Corps in Africa to the US the first thing that struck me was how heavy people were. I did not return from a country suffering from famine, the people there were mostly in excellent shape considering their situation and it was the first time I had really noticed with a new perspective how heavy Americans were. This struck again when I had spent some time hiking in the west and returned to the mid west to see the inactive people away from the trails of the national parks were very overweight.

In Greg Critser's book I think the only thing that was not well explained was this problem of sedentary lifestyle. He does an excellent job otherwise in explaining the politics and culture that have created America's obesity epidemic. This book has changed my eating habits and brought an awareness of the problem of convenience foods, high fructose corn syrup, and fast food culture to me by his explanation of how the most readily available inexpensive foods are also the cause of obesity and much of the nation's health problems.

This is an excellent book and will probably change your outlook on food and eating for the better.

4 out of 5 stars Diet book.......2007-06-10

A good history lesson that is interesting and a fast read. A basic look at how kids and adults can get fat without knowing the makeup of the foods we consume. An eye opener.

5 out of 5 stars Fat Land.......2007-04-06

This is an excellent book that has a lot of inshight into just why Americans are larger than life. This is not a book that I would have chosen to read on my own but I was required to read it for a class. While I am not over weight at this point in my life I have learned a great deal about how to prevent getting there in the near future.

5 out of 5 stars food for thought.......2007-01-30

excellent book! completely changed the way i look at food and the things i am willing to eat. i recommend this book to anyone looking for a healthier lifestyle and the scientific evidence to support their decision.

3 out of 5 stars Not Exactly News.......2007-01-09

This book details a variety of reasons for America's obesity epidemic, including the overuse of high-fructose corn syrup, increase in size and availability of junk food, and a decreased value on physical education in public schools.

Nothing Critser says is exactly earth-shattering and, like many others who have addressed this same issue, he presents the problems without proposing any new solutions. Critser describes ways some fast food restaurants are trying to include healthier foods, but dismisses that largely as a marketing ploy. He also describes ways in which some public schools have begun to reform their food programs and increase their physical education programs. These examples, however, are few and far between.

The overall tone of this book was one of hopelessness. I think by now we all know that obesity is a problem. It would be nice to read a book that has some innovative ideas for fixing it, rather than another one simply exposing the causes.

Book Description

Living Language In-Flight Greek is the perfect boarding pass to learning Greek before you land.

There's no better way to make use of all that spare time on a plane than to master the essentials of a language. This 60-minute program is the simplest way to learn just enough to get by in every situation essential to both the tourist and business traveler.

The program covers everything from greetings and polite expressions to asking directions, getting around, checking into a hotel, and going to a restaurant. There are even sections for meeting people and spending a night on the town.

Short lessons make In-Flight Greek easy to use, and a handy pocket-sized insert is included as a cheat sheet for use on the go.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars good, quick overview.......2007-09-08

Although you'll hardly speak Greek like a native after studying from this CD, you will be able to pronounce a number of polite phrases, order off of a menu, and ask directions. I question some of the content - you're not going to learn enough Greek to strike up a meaningful conversation with a native even after learning the "making friends" phrases - the CD does give enough information for a tourist.

3 out of 5 stars Good CD, Bad Marketing.......2006-05-16

Living Language do a very good job making these CDs. Fast and Easy German and Fast and Easy Hungarian helped me immensely with my trips to eastern Europe, and In-Flight Greek has been working almost as well. I'll get to the "almost" in a bit.

When I say "bad marketing," I mean it's just plain stupid. You will not, I repeat, NOT be able to start listening to this CD when you get on the plane, and get off the plane able to speak Greek.

The way to actually learn from these CDs is to buy it a month or two ahead of time, and listen to the CD three or four times a week during your commute to work. As mentioned in other reviews, the CD is basically just a bunch of phrases spoken in English and Greek. They are broken into logical chapters like "Numbers," "Asking Directions," and "At the Restaurant." It comes with a booklet that has the phrases written phonetically, and also in Greek.

Whether this CD will work for you depends on how well you can listen to spoken sounds and reproduce them, and if you are good at recognizing patterns. After listening enough, you can infer some basic grammar by noting how words change in different sentences.

I would have given this four stars, but the main difference between this CD and the Fast and Easy ones I mentioned is that in this CD the greek phrase is spoken only once. It makes a big difference when you can hear a phrase, have time to try to say it yourself, and then hear it again. It sounds like a tiny fault, but I feel it's significant enough to cost a whole star. Of course, using a little program called Audacity and 30 minutes of free time, I doubled the phrases myself, but I shouldn't have to.

1 out of 5 stars Learn by Listening to Phrases .......2005-05-22

This is basically a list of phrases first in English, then in Greek. Maybe if you knew some Greek and just wanted to refresh, this would work. It would have helped if the phrases had been repeated twice. Most phrases were so long, it was hopeless to even try to repeat them.

4 out of 5 stars In-Flight Greek.......2001-10-09

Face it, airport delays notwithstanding, you won't become fluent in a foreign language on the way to your destination! However, I found this series (I also bought "In-Flight Italian") to be very useful for brushing up my language skills. I think the program is well-organized and covers just about every topic a vacationing traveler could want. Yes, they occasionally throw a very long sentence at you that you couldn't possibly hope to repeat, but they do supply you with a companion booklet with which you can read along.

1 out of 5 stars In flight confusion.......2001-08-20

This is by far the worst language-related product I have ever purchased. This CD assumes that you can learn a language by memorizing long, complicated phrases by rote with no foundation whatsoever in vocabulary or grammar. It is just not possible to remember long setences relating to travel without first learning anything about the basic grammar of a language. The phrases aren't even repeated or broken down. This CD might be useful if you have already taken some modern Greek and want to brush up on travel phrases. Otherwise save your money -- most Greeks who work in airports and hotels speak English and this CD won't help you have much of a conversation with anyone who doesn't.

Book Description

Imagine running away to the Mexican Caribbean and never coming back. That dream became a reality for author Jeanine Kitchel and her husband who traveled to the Yucatan in 1985 and a decade later, left their jobs in Silicon Valley to pursue a relaxed lifestyle in Puerto Morelos, a small fishing village on the Quintana Roo Coast south of Cancun. Chance links them with a contractor who offers to build them a beachfront house, and this is where the true story begins. After side-stepping disaster on several fronts, they build their home, settle into Mexico, and then travel deep into the heart of Yucatan to explore the Mayan ruins. Share their dreams, their heartaches, but most of all, see how they cope with buying land, building a house, and retiring in a foreign country. This evocative adventure is a cockeyed love letter to Mexico, thier adopted homeland.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Entertaining, Informative, and Inspiring.......2007-09-24

I ordered this book prior to a trip to Puerto Morelos thinking it might be an interesting read. It WAS an interesting read, and much more! The author is an excellent writer and has created an almost suspence-like page-turner out of her very informative and entertaining book, Where the Sky is Born. The book is also inspirational as it leads the reader to understand that when you have a dream that is important enough, you will find the means to accomplish it. I devoured the book in one day and enjoyed every minute of it.

Puerto Morelos was also wonderful. A special treat was meeting Ms. Kitchel while we were there. She is an extremely interesting and kind woman. Looking forward to additional books in the future!

4 out of 5 stars Good Read.......2007-06-27

Good book to get a feel for the rhythm and flow of living in Costa Mayan Mexico - encounters that you can expect with government employees, natives, other expats, etc. Nothing real deep or enlightening, but gives a good sense of what to expect. This was a quick read - it goes by fast.

5 out of 5 stars A Delightful Account...........2007-06-23

I want to let others know how much I enjoyed this book.
When I began reading, I was immediatly transported back to the Yucatan, to many of the places we had just visited; Coba, Puerto Morelos, Valledolid, Ek Balam, Chichen Itza (of course), and Merida. Jeanine's candid narrative hit home with me and my impressions of the people and the places she wrote about. To me, Yucatan is vastly different (and much more comfortable) than other parts of Mexico that I've visited - and her book paralleled and reinforced my experience while adding the depth of her experience. She colorfully described the perils and pleasures of building a house in the Yucatan - which encourages me to think more about retiring there. We must also share an appreciation of wonderful Yucatecan food, although I would have enjoyed longer descriptions. Jeanine clearly writes from the heart. A good read by an interesting lady who, with her husband, dreamed, planned, then lived the adventure. Perhaps, in a future edition, Jeanine will write a sequel. I certainly hope so.

5 out of 5 stars Enchanting Adventure.......2007-05-17

What an enchanting adventure. This is a true story that kept my attention focused through the whole book. I wish it had been longer. It was easy to put myself in Jeanine's place and a few times I wish I had been there with her doing what she and her husband were doing.

2 out of 5 stars This is about building a house, not the Mayans.......2007-02-28

I was assigned this book for a class on Mayan Culture and Civilization, so that certainly impacted the lens through which I read this book. I was expecting a book on the Mayans, and that's not at all what this is. It's really a book about buying property and building a house in Mexico - if that's what you're looking for, great. If you want to learn about the Mayans, don't waste your time with this one.
I still only gave this two stars because I felt the writing could have been a lot better.

5 out of 5 stars Don't Build Home Without It!.......2007-01-01

Well written, and quite valuable. Very detailed as the topic is technical, yet also readable. VERY useful information it would take a while to find yourself. I would have liked to have some of the information in front of me before I purchased land there. As for building, its very local specific, for Thailand, and some region specific info also. Thats a good thing....

I'd say "Dont Build Home Without It," to play on the AmEx slogan (not that I have any fondness for those corporates....:). I wont. Many of the details here you will likely be faced with at some point, in a relatively complex place (land ownership, etc). The experiences (and knowledge) of others is an invaluable gift. It helps if you can also write, which he can.

Highly recommended, as is his other book (with Thai co-author), Retiring in Thailand. If you plan to do this also, it will save you (and will me) a lot of pain and frustration, I am sure. Also very detailed yet readable. In my experience (Belize, Panama) its some of the best of the genre. Unqualified 5 stars, as is this book. Thanks, Phillip....!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book on Building a House in Thailand!.......2006-11-28

Mr Puterbach's polemic against "How to Buy Land and Build a House in Thailand"
has almost NOTHING to do with the book he pretends to be reviewing.

Yes, "stuff" happens everywhere, all the time. But if you are dumb
enough to put your newly built house in the name of a nearly broke single mother
you just met in a bar, you are likely not bright enough to be building
a house on your own in another country to begin with!

Having said that, I found Mr Bryce's an EXCELLENT book on the pros and
cons, the risks and rewards of building a house in Thailand.

I personally found his experience and information invaluable, and would
STRONGLY recommend you not even consider building a house in Thailand without reading this book first!

There are indeed many complexities involved, and this book is the easiest
way thru the challenges you will indeed encounter.

Book Description

Combining poetic prose and dozens of stunning photos in both color and black and white, this extraordinary book draws readers into the prayerful rhythms of monasticism. The text includes a brief outline of the development of the Trappist order; the history of Mepkin Abbey in South Carolina, the site of these beautiful and evocative photographs; and-the major part of the book-insightful reflections on key themes of Trappist life.

These themes include such topics as solitude, anticipation, hospitality, hope, patience, commitment, the sanctity of work and the love of scripture. And at the heart of the monastic life is the idea of waiting-keeping constant vigil for the God who comes even now. Within this quiet life is the same struggle faced in the outside world, the same need for continual conversion. So while the monastery's values and virtues are unique, they also echo the universal call to holiness heard by every Christian.

5 out of 5 stars A Silent Step Inside Trappist Monasticism.......2007-05-25

Right off I want to comment that the book is well written and shows the proper respect to the community. The photos are outstanding and the quotes appropriate. This beautiful book seeks to express the spirit of monasticism through an examination of one Trappist (Cistercian) monastery, Mepkin Abbey in South Carolina. And it does just that.

The book is written in two main sections. In the first part the author takes us on a tour of the Monks at Mepkin. We see their history and the present life within the community. It shows us a glimpse of a vibrant community that is both living the ancient life of monastic practices and have blended it with the world of today in such a way as to take nothing away from the former.

As we read the second section of the book we see it focus on the monk himself. What is it that makes up a life of a Trappist monk? His work, prayer, worship, sacred reading; as well as how they blend a life of community, solitude and true Christ like hospitality.

This book was not written to explain the monks nor the monastery, but to allow us a glimpse of what it is to see through the eyes of these monks. We have the opportunity to learn while reading this book that that there is a universal call to holiness to be found in each and everyone of us.

5 out of 5 stars An Up-Close look at a Fascinating World.......2004-06-06

TRAPPIST: LIVING IN THE LAND OF DESIRE appears almost to be a coffee table book. It was written as a companion to a PBS special about the monks at Mepkin Abbey in South Carolina, but it is more like a spiritual guide to the Trappist way of life. The author, Michael Downey, gives excellent background information about the Trappist order as well as the history and life at Mepkin Abbey itself. We see what life is like at a typical day in the monastery. The day is rather routine (compared to most standards) and changes only on occasion, but it is in the routine that Trappists believe that God can be found. We also meet some of the personalities of Mepkin and we discover that monks are not people who flee from the world, but actually discover the world by setting themselves apart. Downey is able to capture the richness of monastic life in the book as well as how these adherents to the strict rule of St. Benedict as interpreted by the monks of New Citeaux in France and later reformulated at La Trappe also in France, live an ancient lifestyle that is somehow not outdated in today's world. The material in the book is both spiritually enriching and informative. The exquisite photographs also add the beauty of the book and make it a book that can cause a person to pause and think about God's presence in the world.

5 out of 5 stars A BEAUTIFUL BOOK.......1999-09-13

this is a book for everybody who want a moment of meditation the beautiful pictures take us to moments we never have in our daily life, this book also help to understand more about monastic life, and the cistercian charism of silence, prayer and love.

5 out of 5 stars A provocative meditation on finding Christ in daily life........1998-03-26

TRAPPIST: LIVING IN THE LAND OF DESIRE describes in words and pictures the quest of the monk to encounter, know and love Christ in the ordinary and routine activities of his daily life. Michael Mauney's striking photographs complement Michael Downey's thoughtful meditations on monastic life. A must read for anyone seriously interested in the "imitation of Christ" in the ordinary circumstances and activities of daily life.
