Meet Me in St. Louis, Louis; Meet Me at The Fair!.......2005-06-01
Donald Crew admirably captures the nighttime look and feel of a state fair in this beautifully illustrated kids' book. Using gouache and watercolor, his vivid primary colors contrasts the dark sky with the dazzling neon signs. One can practically feel the electricity pulsing from the bright lights, and the diffusion of light emits a magical energy. This super luminosity also enables readers to view the faces and emotions of the diverse crowd: romantic couples, excited kids, hungry teens, and pleased parents.
The book's spare prose grasps the essence of the fair's main delights: Food ("So many things to eat and drink. So many choices."), games and prizes ("So many games to play."), and rides (And now, on to the RIDES!"). There are no animals in Crew's fair; this is strictly a food and rides extravaganza, at least during the night. The rides coverage spans 12 pages, culminating in "The best, the best ride of all...the GIANT FERRIS WHEEL!" The story concludes with a 2-page spread showing the fairgrounds from the top of the Ferris wheel, and a line of people happily leaving the grounds. As in a picture book, some of the ride pictures have no caption, it's as if Crews anticipated the awe of his young readers. The book has a big "WOW" factor, mainly due to Crews' outstanding feeling for the electric atmosphere of the fair.
Obviously, Crews idealizes the Fair: It is blanketed by uniformly happy customers in a clean and wholesome environment. I've experienced nothing quite like this. Even in the most controlled venues such as Disneyland, one invariably encounters crying toddlers, parents arguing with their kids and with each other, exorbitant prices, and long lines. However, since this is a book for kids, Crews wisely excludes these details. As a result, he recreates a child's bedazzling experience of a fair's excitement and wonder.
My four-year-old adores this book.......2000-09-26
We found this book at the library, and my four-year-old was delighted by it. He loves fairs, especially roller coasters and merry-go-rounds, and was sad when we had to return to this book to the library. Donald Crews' book School Bus is another favorite of his, and we've already added it to our collection. I intend to give a copy of Night at the Fair to my child for Christmas.
Crews does it again!.......1999-07-29
As a teacher and mother of three children I recommend this book. I want parents to remember that there need not be tons of text for a book to be a real learning expereince.Take the time to look at the illustrations and colors. Predict what is going to happen. We are lucky to have so many talented people to illustrate kid's books. Again, take the time to look and examine the pictures. Books that the parents do not like will probably not be liked by their children.
Disappointing on several levels.......1998-08-26
I am puzzled as to why this book is recommended for children ages 4-8. There is minimal text, and what text there is does little to advance the story line. The illustrations are eye catching from a distance, but up close are actually rather frightening--the people's faces are amorphous and blobby. My two children (ages 5 and nearly 4) love going to the fair, but they don't love this book.
Disappointing on several levels.......1998-08-24
I am perplexed as to why the reading level for this book is given as ages 4-8. The text is so minimal as to be almost useless in introducing young kids to the sights and sounds encountered at a fair. The illustrations, although bright and eye-catching at first glance, are actually rather scary if you scrutinize them. The people's faces are amorphous and blobby. My two young daughters (ages 5 and nearly 4) love fairs, but they are only lukewarm about this book.
Book Description
Fair trade is a fast-growing alternative market intended to bring better prices and greater social justice to small farmers around the world. But is it working? This vivid study of coffee farmers in Mexico offers the first thorough investigation of the social, economic, and environmental benefits of fair trade. Based on extensive research in Zapotec indigenous communities in the state of Oaxaca, Brewing Justice follows the members of the cooperative Michiza, whose organic coffee is sold on the international fair trade market. It compares these families to conventional farming families in the same region, who depend on local middlemen and are vulnerable to the fluctuations of the world coffee market. Written in a clear and accessible style, the book carries readers into the lives of these coffee producer households and their communities, offering a nuanced analysis of both the effects of fair trade on everyday life and the limits of its impact. Brewing Justice paints a clear picture of the complex dynamics of the fair trade market and its relationship to the global economy. Drawing on interviews with dozens of fair trade leaders, the book also explores the changing politics of this international movement, including the challenges posed by the entry of transnational corporations into the fair trade system. It concludes by offering recommendations for strengthening and protecting the integrity of fair trade.

Great overview of fair trade coffee.......2007-07-20
Jaffee did a great job covering the important aspects of fair trade coffee. He thoroughly explained the history of the market and explained the coffee market during the ICA years as well. He also covers the drawbacks of fair trade. I would recomend this book to anyone interested in coffee as well as anyone interested in social justice.

Book Description
Every June, in gratitude to their devoted fans, the stars of country music appear at the Tennessee State Fairgrounds to sign autographs for hours and perform during the week called Fan Fair. Though the 1996 Fan Fair was a phenomenal success, for Nashville itself it was also a time of doubt, uncertainty and dramatic change. The week was like a country song: intense, emotional, filled with joy and disappointment, passion and dismay, laughter and tears.
Fan Fair is the setting for this extraordinary inside look at country music. Laurence Leamer had unprecedented access to the stars, managers, songwriters and record company execs of Nashville. Here is the troubled inner life of Garth Brooks, the greatest-selling solo artist of all time. Vince Gill takes a song out of an old leather bag and records a No.1 hit. Reba McEntire angers her fans so much that they tear up her photos, Patty Loveless sings her heart out while her beloved older sister lies dying in a nearby hospital and superstar Shania Twain talks with handicapped Fan Fair goers. Here is Mary Chapin Carpenter singing at the White House instead of Fan Fair. Here are Alan Jackson and Brooks and Dunn at the height of their success juxtaposed against the struggles of Emmylou Harris. The younger stars are portrayed as well: LeAnn Rimes, Mindy McCready, James Bonamy, and BR5-49, all in vivid, novelesque detail. Unknowns, once-knowns, label reps, producers, songwriters and managers are all part of this rich mosaic of Nashville life as it plays out for one incredible week.
To millions of country fans, Three Chords and the Truth will be a book of revelations. Those who have rarely listened to country music will learn why it is the most-listened-to music in the nation, played on more than 2,400 radio stations. And everyone who reads it will never again hear a country song quite the same way.

Great to read a book by a writer that has some moxy ........1999-04-24
To-days music fan is finally demanding to know the truth about it's Stars. You finally realize that after reading the rash of books that come out on the heals of Stardom, that they are basically a re-hash of the perfect picture painted by a publisist or the star involved. Laurence Leamer gives you a glimpse of reality and makes you aware that stars should be accountable for everything even if it is in the past.I would personally like to see him dig a little deeper. Congratulations Laurence, get in touch, I can help you with your dig!!
Don't Bother.......1998-02-15
This book is too biased to be taken seriously- The author cuts down every artist he wasn't given direct access to. He discribes encounters he couldn't have seen, and quotes conversations he couldn't have heard. Apparently he isn't a fan of radio-friendly country music, and if you are you won't enjoy the way he puts down your favorite artists. There's no doubt Mr. Leamer did his research, but when he couldn't find information he made it up.
Sensation and Cliche.......1997-06-13
An exercise in pseudo case-study, this book leaves the reader with the feeling that they've just done a marathon reading session of the National Enquirer. Throughout the pages and pages of intimate details of many current country music personalities (much of which is negative), the reader continues to wonder how exactly the author found out all this information. He appears to have been everywhere at once, but his voice or presence never appears in the text. The best example of this is the picture of Garth Brooks driving his pickup, obviously from the inside as the truck is moving, with the caption, "Garth drives alone in his truck." If he was alone, where was the photographer? The text is the same way throughout. One wonders if the people the author got his information from knew how he would present the details. The writing is much like the country songs he decries: trite, sensationalist, and filled with cliches. It's readable, but unsympathetic toward most of his subjects and slanted toward a particular type of country music

The best book on the market for carousel carving........2001-04-09
I have taken classes from the author, and the book is written just like his classes. The book goes step by step through the whole process of carving the carousel. I have observed some of Mr. Rienhardt's other works and I hope he continues to write other great books on carousel carving.
Great book if you want to carve 1/8 size horses!.......1999-12-20
This book includes the plans for many horses and there aren't a lot of separate parts per each horse, which is good. He handles all you need to know in a basic, down to earth manner including wood grain, finishing, etc. He's carved over 1,000 horses so I guess he knows what he's talking about. I hope he puts out other books about different carving styles of carousel horses (especially Mullers) in the future.
Easily understood and beautifully illustrated........1999-02-21
The instructions and illustrations in this book makes carousel woodcarving for the beginner or pro a real pleasure. Everything needed in the way of instruction is included in this book. A great addition to any woodworker's library.
Clear, easy to read instructions.......1998-10-17
This book offers the beginner and experienced carver alike a clear and easy to understand way to make your own miniature carosel animal. Horse shown, other for inspiration. You'll like it.

Italy is a land of feste--religious and secular festivals featuring wonderful food. Whether held in honor of a patron saint or dedicated to food itself (the town of Piediluco celebrates fish, for example; Massarosa, the crab; Bozzello, chestnuts), these events take local bounty to great culinary heights.
Italian food writer and cooking teacher Anne Bianchi has visited Italy's 18 regions and returned with over 200 festival recipes. These are not only uniquely good, but illuminate vital culinary traditions. Lovers of authentic Italian cooking and food culture will find Italian Festival Food a treasure.
The recipes, which are organized by course, from appetizers to desserts, remind one constantly of the great integrity of Italian home cooking: its commitment to impeccable ingredients treated as simply as possible to achieve the most pleasurable result. Irresistible examples of this wisdom include Lazio's Walnut, Mozzarella, and Prosciutto Sandwiches; Baked Rice Casserole with Zucchini and Potatoes from Calabria; the Veneto's Spaghetti Tubes with Duck Sauce; Swordfish Steaks Baked with Tomatoes, Raisins, and Olives from Sicily; and Butternut Squash Bread from Friuli--one of many mouthwatering recipes included in a chapter devoted to soups, breads, focaccias, and pizzas. Bianchi also provides a level-of-difficulty notation for all of the recipes, most of which rate--and truly are--"easy." Recipe headnotes offer relevant celebration profiles, while photos depict the events themselves. Not the least of the book's pleasures are nine adroit essays, woven throughout, that explore the people of the feste--remarkable culinary legacies, skillfully shared. --Arthur Boehm
Book Description
"Bianchi's words are as delicious and simple as the food they celebrate, and clearly describe the exquisite detail so much a part of traditional food in all Italian towns. This book is a treasure for both the novice and the professional cook!" Mario Batali, Host of Molto Mario on TVFN
Customer Reviews:
Excellent book on authentic Italian cooking.......2006-04-19
This review is written from the perspective of a serious home cook that has been studying cooking for 25 years, and concentrating on Italian cooking for the last ten.
This book is a wonderful addition to any Italian cookbook library. The author does a magnificent job of painting a picture of the Italian festival culture. I was surprised by the emphasis on food and festivals during my first trip to Italy. It now seems second nature to me. If you have ever been fortunate enough to eat any of the wonderful festival food in Italy you know what a gift this book is to the culinary community.
The recipe for baked Gnocchi with Asparagus, Taleggio and Asiago is simply amazing. If you have either a Wegmans or Whole Foods in your area you should have a source for Taleggio. It is worth the effort to find this specialty cheese; it is a fantastic product that is almost addicting. The Sauteed Chicken with Poached Shrimp and Fried Eggs is also to die for. I have been pleased with every dish from this book. Some are more work than others, but all worth the effort.
The author also does a nice job of explaining the regional aspects of the dishes. This book is part cookbook, and part regional cooking history. I highly recommend this book for anyone that is seriously interested in Italian cooking.
A superb read accompanied by wonderful recipes........1999-08-04
I enjoyed every page of this book. When I finished it, I wanted to know more, not only about festivals, food and other traditions but about the author. I felt like I should know her, like we should be friends.
The recipes are well research and well written, and include notations on the difficulty of preparation, making it a tool for novices and experts alike. When I finished reading this book I wanted to cook my way through it.
This one I will keep in the kitchen.

A story of the industrial revolution in Wales.......2007-04-19
"The Fair Country" is rural Wales and this is a novel of the industrial revolution - or rather, a polemic against it.
The story is set in a Welsh valley, and begins in 1826. It describes how the valley became a centre of iron production, and is highly critical of the human cost of industrialisation.
The writing is quite moving and powerful, and will be what most people read this book for.
The attitudes presented in "Rape of the Fair Country" are rather one-sided and simplistic. Over the last century, the word "luddite" has become a pejorative term of abuse to mean someone who is mindlessly opposed to technological change or reform approved of by the person using the word. This novel is literally pro-luddite in the original sense of that expression in that the heroes and heroines of the book are opposed to the human cost of the industrial revolution.
The book represents the government and ironmasters as a machiavellian evil, and the Welsh working men who eventually rise against them as brave and noble but foolhardy.
I was initially tempted to caricature this book by desribing it as so pro-luddite as to make the Teamsters union seem like the John Birch society by comparison. However, that would be a little unfair, as the book also depicts the awful results which can follow if people are too quick to resort to force, even in what would otherwise be a just cause, without thinking through the consequences.
Why was this story never filmed?.......2000-02-01
I heartily agree with the other readers of this wonderful book who have given it 5 stars. I first read it as a teenager back in my native Wales and was fascinated by its accurate historical detail and wonderful earthy characters - I think it exlains better than any other novel of its type the eternal struggle of the Celts against their Anglo-Saxon would-be conquerors, and why we (the Celts) are so different. Had this book been written about Scotland or Ireland, I am sure it would have been made into an Oscar-winning movie by now!
A litle known gem.......1999-12-14
am amazed that this book seems so obscure;1 other review! Ive read extensively including all of the great and renowned authors in most modern lists-this book would be up there in any list in terms of the quality of the writing.Cordell brings the welsh character to life with 3 dimensional people enduring the bitter hardships of 19th century mining life.Humorous, tragic, heartfelt, real 'The rape of the fair country' is a must read for those searching for pure quality;unlike many novels relating struggle or hardship this one stands above, resonates truth and emotion and leaves the reader with an indelible memory. There are two more in the series of the Mortimer family but this is the best of them. Told through the eyes of the younger son Iestyn in a first person account the language will charm, the plot will intrigue and the characters will be endear with a real ring of truth. At times earthy and sensuous, never falsely romantic this book is a gem that surprisingly seems to have missed out on any mainstream recognition.Dont be misled by that ,with this book you wont be disappointed
Llyfr ardderchog (Great book).......1999-11-24
I am 27 and embarrassed to say that "Rape of the fair country" is the first book I've really read, but what a way to start! When you begin reading the book you soon become inseparable for you feel as though you are part of the "Mortymer" family. Its a tragic but beutiful tale of life at the begining of this century in the iron works of the South Wales Valleys. But it's an eye opener into the world we live in today. (Some third world countries). It makes you appreciate our past and be thankful of what we have today. A trully wonderfull read.
