I cannot say enough good things!.......2007-09-11
I cannot say enough good things about this book! It is a must for anyone who formulates their horses' diets to any extent and needs specific information on feedstuffs. Particularly helpful if you have a horse with a nutrition-related disease, like insulin resistance or mineral deficiencies.

Book Description
What are the nutritional needs of your horse? Chances are, you might not know. Understanding Equine Nutrition discusses the various dietary needs of your horse and details the different food groups available-from pasture grass to grains and pellets to supplements. This essential information helps you make educated decisions about your horse's diet.
Customer Reviews:
Really helpful info!.......2004-02-18
This book is packed with helpful information that I can really use...Rather than providing a dumbed-down, one-size-fits-all recipe for feeding, Briggs gives horse owners the facts and formulas they need to make sure their horses' nutritional needs are met.
Try something else..........2003-02-24
This book is complete and informative, albeit a little hard to read. Horses have many different dietary requirements: fiber, fat, vitamins, minerals, protein... and Karen Briggs doesn't create any charts or guides to help you figure out which elements are likely to be lacking in your particular horses diet. Instead, try "Beyond the Hay Days" which provides equally detailed and comprehensive information as well as helpful summary charts that help you understand what your equines diet might be lacking and how best to suppliment it.
Average customer rating:
- Makes horse nutrition simple.
- Thank heavens--no hocus pocus!
- Very entertaining to read, even for a "city girl".
- A proper feeding reference for all horse owners

Customer Reviews:
Makes horse nutrition simple........2004-05-19
This is an excellent book on horse nutrition. It makes nutrition easy to understand and information is presented in an easy to read format. Nutrition concepts (such as protein, fat, carbohydrates, ATP, enzmymes, minerals, vitamins, etc.) and how they are metabolized by the horse are explained. Also included is a chapter dedicated to MSM, DMG, Chondroitin Sulfates, Glucosamine, and Bromelain. The book details how much protein, fat, vitamins, minerals, etc. your type of horse needs (broken down into maintenance horse, pregnancy, lactating, growing, performance, or stallion) and how your horse's health, care and general condition contribute to his ability to absorb these nutrients. Each chapter includes charts highlighting the information presented. Additionally, at the end of the book are charts and formulas to help you determine exactly how much your horse needs of each nutrient and how much he is currently receiving in his diet. They were very easy to use, and this will allow you to see where his diet is deficient. This is a great book for the horse owner who is interested in horse nutrition, wants to optimize what he is feeding his horse, and is curious as to the benefits (or not) of all those supplements on the market.
While you can purchase either the paperback or hardcover here on amazon, if you go to the publisher (www.pixyjackpress.com), the author will sign the book for you. It's a nice touch.
Thank heavens--no hocus pocus!.......1999-12-29
This book offers a very simple, concise look at feeding horses, with an emphasis on SIMPLE. Forage is kept as the cornerstone of the equine diet, and a simple look at protein and mineral requirements is given. Written with U.S. horseowners in mind, this book differs from many books based in the UK, where grain types are much different.
Very entertaining to read, even for a "city girl"........1999-05-24
Rex Ewing captures the reader's interest easily with his relaxed writing style. He makes horse nutrition sound simple and there isn't a lot of confusing technical terms. A straight-to-the-point book.
A proper feeding reference for all horse owners.......1999-01-15
Much more is involved in optimum feeding of a horse than several flakes of hay, a mineral block, and can of grain. Rex Ewing approaches horse nitrition in a thorough, comprehensive manner by explaining the role and importance of nutrients from carbohydrates, fat, and protein to macro and trace minerals to vitamins. He discusses nutritional requirements and the effects of proper and improper nutrition on the maintenance horse, performance horse, stallion, brood mare, nursing foal, weanlings, and yearlings. Whether your horse is healthy or its coat lacks luster, or it displays a loss of appetite or energy, or a weight loss; this book will be helpful. Summary charts are provided throughout and provide a valualbe reference and summary tool. Rex's extensive background and research can benefit the new as well as the veteran horse owner.

Nutrient Requirements of Horses: Sixth Revised Edition
ASIN: 0683049623 |
Book Description
This solidly clinical and practical text focuses on both nutritional and general care of the horse, whether idle, equine athlete, or general working horse. Also covered are developmental problems linked to nutrition. A color augmented chapter on toxic plants is unique to this text, and provides valuable information and conversion factors for various ages and physical demands.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent information with details and research results!.......1998-05-15
Excellent source of information for those horseowners who want to optimize their horse's care instead of just throwing "any old hay" at them. Even though this book is very similar (almost identical) in content to Lewis' other book, "Feeding and Care of the Horse", I would definitely choose "Equine Clinical Nutrition" instead as it contains literary references to research. Very useful if you need supportive information and are located near a vet-med library to pull papers.
This book should be used in conjunction with the "Nutrient Requirements of Horses" (National Research Council, 1989), as Lewis' appendices do not include the full nutritional content tables of many less-commonly used feeds.
This book is well worth the price, and I am looking forward to the next edition if one is in the works!

The Dynamic Horse A Biomechanical Guide to Equine Movement and Performance
ASIN: 1405105984 |
Book Description
Equine Nutrition and Feeding has become the standard work on the subject, covering every aspect of the nutrition of breeding, growing and working horses, describing the basis upon which scientifically derived conclusions for nutrition and dietary requirements are reached. Following the last edition in 1998, the book has been extensively updated, revised and rewritten with reference to well over 400 papers that have been published since 1998 on equine science. It has been made more practical by setting out the implications of new research for feeding programmes and it includes a full account of the toxicology and metabolic and other diseases, related to diet. Their causes and control are discussed and comprehensive lists of definitions of the terms and abbreviations used are given.

Book Description
Feeding horses wasn't supposed to be so complicated. At least that's not what Mother Nature intended. All horses in the wild really needed was a good source of grass and water and a natural salt lick of some kind. But as man began using horses for specific purposes, such as working fields, riding for pleasure or performance, or for breeding, so too did the kinds and amount of feeds owners gave to their animals. In Understanding Equine Nutrition, Karen Briggs, a horsewoman and equine nutritionist, sets out to make feeding horses simple again. Whether your horse is a growing yearling, a high-performance athlete, a mom-to-be, or a favorite pasture horse, this important guide will help you make sense of the jargon, sort out the ingredients, and make a feeding plan and menu that is best for your horse.

This book will answer all your equine nutrition questions.......2005-01-07
I can't say enough about this book. These days we are bombarded with these ads for supplements the manufacturers insist our horses must have! But we can cause real problems if we don't know what we are doing. Too much of this? Not enough that? We can cause serious damage. This book will tell you exactly what your horse needs by taking in all kinds of factors such as how much work he does, where he lives, etc.
Easy to read, easy to understand. Buy this book!
Equine Supplements & Nutraceuticals: A Guide to Peak Health.......2000-10-15
This is the best book I have ever read on the subject of nutrition for horses. With all of the charts on every vitamin and mineral needed for equine's, it is very easy to understand for the lay-person. This book goes into great detail on precise amounts needed for each type of discipline and what you may need to add or subtract to "balance" your horses diet. I would strongly recomend this book for any and every horse owner's library.

Book Description
If you want to limit modern contaminants and additives that affect your horse's health and vitality, develop an alternative approach to "natural management"--using techniques drawn from a growing understanding of the natural state in which horses have lived for centuries the world over. With informative tips, charts, and color illustrations on every page, the philosophy of natural management unfolds through sections on nutrition, health, environment, stable care, training, and breeding. You'll learn to combine the best of what nature intended a horse to be, with new methods for proper care, restoring wild field conditions, natural digestion, and organic feeding, while carefully removing unhelpful feed additives and supplements, plus prevention of infections, allergies, and dangers during mating and birth. A Main Selection of the Equestrian Book Club.
Customer Reviews:
A Great Resource.......2007-03-07
The Organic Horse by Peter Gray is a great book and I give it a 5 out of 5 rating. It gives the best insight into the natural state of the horse. The purpose of the book is to draw attention to the natural horse, and to show how the presence of substances it eats may affect its body systems, lower its immunity, influence the spread of disease and affect performance. Gray explains his information through using evidence such as illustrations, statistics, and research. Anyone who is interested in horses should read this book, but it is not only for beginners in the horse world but the professional also.
