Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Soil Microbiology and Biochemistry, Second Edition.......2006-02-25

Book in very good condition when arrived, was new when purchased. Cost was a little high at 62.00 dollars. Received in a timely manner.

5 out of 5 stars Standard text for soil microbiology.......2002-09-18

I was a graduate student in soils and forestry when I took a class in soil microbiology that used this text. It is essentially the gold standard for soil micro texts. It isn't overly technical, but it includes a thorough analysis of the basic concepts needed to understand most aspects of soil microbiology research and application. The book uses mostly agronomic examples, but there is enough variety of ecosystems to make it useful for those working in forestry, grasslands, and almost any type of soil. Those interested in detailed discussions of molecular microbial methods or biotechnology may be disappointed, but for the general student looking to understand what those billion microbes per teaspoon of soil are doing, this book is the best introduction out there.

    Book Description

Nutrient Cycling in Terrestrial Ecosystems presents a comprehensive overview of nutrient cycling processes and their importance for plant growth and ecosystem sustainability. The first part of the book presents the fundamentals of nutrient cycling. Topics included are cycling of carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, sulphur and micronutrients. Particular attention is paid to the role of root exudates and rhizosphere microorganisms in facilitating nutrient cycling. The second part discusses nutrient cycling at an ecosystem scale, covering cropping systems, pastures, natural grasslands, arid lands, tundras and forests. The final chapter reviews current models of nutrient cycling.

By comprehensively covering nutrient cycling at a range of scales and emphasising multidisciplinary approaches, this volume will support scientists and practitioners alike, providing links between those involved in improving sustainable economic output from managed ecosystems and those interested in conservation of natural ecosystems.

      Book Description

This book provides current information on synthesis of plant hormones, how their concentrations are regulated, and how they modulate various plant processes. It details how plants sense and tolerate such factors as drought, salinity, and cold temperature, factors that limit plant productivity on earth. It also explains how plants sense two other environmental signals, light and gravity, and modify their developmental patterns in response to those signals. This book takes the reader from basic concepts to the most up-to-date thinking on these topics.

      * Provides clear synthesis and review of hormonal and environmental regulation of plant growth and development
      * Contains more than 600 illustrations
supplementary information on techniques and/or related topics of interest
      * Single-authored text provides uniformity of presentation and integration of the subject matter

        Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Soil, Plant, Water & Atmosphere.......2005-11-02

This book is an attempt to create SPAC Soil, Plant, Atmosphere Continuum. But looks more like a series of lecture notes. Written in clear manner covering aspects of water in soil, plant and atmosphere. Each chapter also has a brief biography of famous person responsible in the topic discusses from Richards to Nielsen, Hertz, Boltzmann etc. Also contained instruments, and anecdote behind them such as how disc permeameter evolved and patented.
In Chapter 2 the author stressed the importance of using SI units. But other chapters still use non SI units eg. dynes/cm3, bar.
The author tries to incorporate many modern instruments, but some classical methods and theories still used. such as using wheatstone bridge to measure conductivity and electrical analogue.

          Book Description

Quite naturally, photosynthesis has achieved massive amounts of attention in recent years. Aside from being the most spectacular physiological process in plant growth, it is actually the key to our dealing with the potentially cataclysmic accumulation of carbon dioxide in the earth's atmosphere. Unfortunately, while information is plentiful, all this attention has resulted in a scattered database on photosynthesis, with no contemporary starting point…at least until now. With the second edition of the Handbook of Photosynthesis, Mohammad Pessarakli once again fills the need for an authoritative and balanced resource by assembling a team of experts from across the globe. Together, they have created a comprehensive reference that in a single volume includes important background information, as well as the most recent research findings on photosynthesis. Completely Revised with Several New Chapters The handbook, a completely updated reworking of the critically acclaimed first edition, details all of the photosynthetic factors and processes under both normal and stressful conditions, covering lower and higher plants as well as related biochemistry and plant molecular biology. Divided into fourteen sections for ease of reference, with nearly 8000 bibliographic citations, the handbook contains authoritative contributions from over 80 scientists. It includes approximately 500 drawings, photographs, tables, and equations- all designed to reinforce and clarify important text material.

              Book Description

Contemporary legislation respecting environmental protection and public health, at both national and international levels, are based on data that characterize chemical properties of environmental phenomena, especially those that reside in our food chain. Thus, environmental and food quality are now matters of major public concern and therefore a system of metrology in trace analysis has recently been developed at the international level. This new edition of a bestseller highlights the significance of anthropogenic factors in changing the trace element status in soils and plants. Written by Dr. Alina Kabata-Pendias, a world-renowned plant and soil scientist, Trace Elements in Soil and Plants, Third Edition incorporates recent data from about 400 respected sources. These data present the most recent research on topical issues such as the assessment of natural/background content of trace elements in soil; bioindication of chemical status of environmental compartments; soil remediation; and hyperaccumulation and hyperextraction of trace metals from the soil. Discussions of the health-related significance of trace elements in food are also included. This third edition presents an overview of the principal pathways from soils to plants. The author provides the background for a more profound understanding of ways by which chemical processes operate in both polluted and unpolluted conditions of the soil-plant system. The current review of recent soil-plant findings offered by Trace Elements in Soil and Plants, Third Edition renders the book an indispensable reference.

2 out of 5 stars Manganese in Soils and Plants : Confusing Proceedings??.......2000-09-14

This is an excellent book if, like me, you are researching soil science and want to find a somewhere to begin reading about Mn in soil and plants. It is however one of the most boring books I have ever read. I would make two further comments about the book, the first is that one can walk away with any conclusion that one wants because a lot of the papers presented here contradict totally. This is probably a reflection on the conference that it reports. Secondly, soil science has moved on significantly with respect to looking at Mn in soil. One could better spent 100 and something dolllars reading some more recent papers. I have however referenced it in my PhD thesis because of its interesting observations of Mn in plants, specifically plant roots. To sum up, it is a good starting place for such an obscure topic but it could have been so much better. My advice is to look at it if it is in the library (and don't worry if you walk away confused, we did), but think twice about buying as there must be more coherant and up-to-date texts available. I hope you find this useful. Anton

A reference text focusing on basic organic chemistry and reactions of naturally occurring organic substances in soils. Covers pools of organic matter in soils, transformations, methods of extraction and fractionation. Section two deals primarily with the chemistry of known classes of organic compounds in soils including saccharides, lipids and constituents containing nitrogen, phosphorus and sulfur. Section three is concerned with basic organic chemistry of humic substances, followed by the importance of organic matter associations and interactions. Contains new chapters on NMR spectroscopy, analytical pyrolysis and on chemical structures.

5 out of 5 stars One of the more comprehensive sources on humic substances........1999-09-16

Stevenson's _Humus Chemistry_ is THE source on soil organic matter (SOM), namely humic substances. It played an instrumental role as a reference in support of my masters thesis. I would recommend the book highly to anyone taking a course and/or with a serious interest in any aspect of SOM.
