Book Description

In her debut mystery, Chocolate Chip Cookie Murder, intrepid amateur sleuth and bakery owner Hannah Swensen proved that when it comes to crime, nothing is sweeter than a woman who knows how to really mix it up. Now, the flame-haired, tart-talking (and baking) heroine is back, judging a contest where the competition is really murder.

Strawberry Shortcake Murder

When the president of Hartland Flour chooses cozy Lake Eden, Minnesota, as the spot for their first annual Dessert Bake-Off, Hannah is thrilled to serve as the head judge. But when a fellow judge, Coach Boyd Watson, is found stone-cold dead, facedown in Hannah's celebrated strawberry shortcake, Lake Eden's sweet ride to fame turns very sour indeed.

Between perfecting her Cheddar Cheese Apple Pie and Chocolate Crunchies, Hannah's snooping into the coach's private life and not coming up short on suspects. And could Watson's harsh criticism during the judging have given one of the contestants a license to kill? The stakes are rising faster than dough, and Hannah will have to be very careful, because somebody is cooking up a recipe for murder...with Hannah landing on the "necessary ingredients" list.

"Another delicious adventure...a superior cozy sure to leave readers satisfied...but hungry for more." --Publishers Weekly

5 out of 5 stars Good to the last crumb..........2007-05-14

What can be tastier than fresh, juicy strawberries nestled in a bed of whipped cream, gently cascading down the crumbly slopes of a golden pound cake? In her second installment of this fantastic culinary cozy mystery series, Joanne Fluke truly outdoes herself with the Strawberry Shortcake Murder. She gives the reader great recipes in-between the chapters that are being discussed and baked in the book as the small town nestled in beautiful nature has murders galore. I have to recommend reading the series in order, because it's a real pleasure watching Hannah Swensen, our amateur sleuth who runs the Cookie Jar in Minnesota's always chilly Lake Eden grown and develop and make new friends and enemies.

This book was even better than the first in the series and I read it in one day, hungry for more! I was deeply impressed with the array of characters introduced into the tale to make the mystery harder to guess, I can't say how many times I read a mystery book that only had three suspects, the obvious one sticking out like a sore thumb. This is not the case with this delicious book. I must also warn that the reader will want to wrap up in a comfy blanket, make a pot of coffee and eat cookies all throughout the book. I love to bake and have great success with it but do not indulge in the art often, yet this book made me hungry for the entire day I was reading it. I have made some of the recipes form the first book and they have came out with fantastic results, so I am really looking forward to reading all of Joanne's books because they are laden with cookies and some savory dishes in the latter books. This is a series that is fun to collect and can be used to bake with once the mystery is solved.

Few of the recipes in the book were used in the story line as Hannah Swensen has agreed to bake at Lake Eden's first annual Dessert Bake-Off and serve as the head judge. Some mouth watering creations such as Apricot Bread Pudding and Hawaiian Flan are on the menu. What else is on the menu is murder...another judge, Boyd Watson a mean coach who works at the local school is found dead in his driveway, face down in Hannah Strawberry Shortcake. It is up to Hannah and her sister Andrea to snoop around friends and family to figure out ties to Boyd, a man few liked and many disliked for his harsh comment during the bake off and his violent temper with his wife. I adored the wide array of clues that kept my mind busy as my mouth was watering for the recipes mentioned, and I really enjoyed solving the mystery along Hannah's side. This book was rich in intriguing characters, also introducing Lucy Richards, a reporter at the local town paper who seemed to have dirty scoop on many of its members, including Boyd. The story lines crossing like an angry river gave me much to think about as I read the book and proved to reach a satisfying ending that made this book a good purchase.

For those who love mysteries and watch cooking shows this will be a heavenly treat. Honestly this book will even appeal to those on the diet, but I recommend not getting too close to the pagers, this tale is too delicious to read on a hungry stomach and I cannot wait to read the next installment in this warm and cozy series.

Hannah is a great character and her family is fun. The recipes are the best.

5 out of 5 stars Another Sweet Hannah Swenson Mystery.......2006-11-04

Following up on the success of The Chocolate Chip Cookie Murder, this is the second volume in the Hannah Swenson Murder Mysteries. Here again, we find Hannah coping with the brutal Minnesota winter when the unthinkable happens. Hannah finds a body! The local high school coach and secret wife beater is found dead face down in Hannah's strawberry shortcake. His wife certainly has a motive, but is she the real killer? The police are inclined to think so, but Hannah certainly does not. With the aide of her sister, Andrea, she sets out to find the real killer. Many suspenseful twists and turns follow as Hannah and Andrea proceed on their relentless mission to free an innocent woman. Will they succeed and find the real killer? Only in the last few chapters will you find out the answer to this riddle.

Once again, author Joanne Fluke has surpassed herself with another excellent novel. The cozy and inviting atmosphere found in the first novel continues here against the backdrop of the cruel Minnesota cold. Many delicious recipes are included so you can share the experience right along with Hannah and her friends. Her strained relationship with her mother continues as her friendship with Norman grows and her closeness to her sister Andrea deepens. The novel keeps you in suspense right up until the very end providing an exhilarating mystery ride. This is a novel not to be missed. Very highly recommended.

Book is better than the first (2) I read. Less characters, easier to follow...and the main character...has more tight squeezes to get out of! Reads alot faster!

5 out of 5 stars ONE OF THE BEST COZY MYSTERY SERIES YOU'LL FIND!!!.......2006-08-11

These mysteries are COZY and INTERESTING and GOOD!!! They are perfect!!! I could not ask for a better mystery!!! Not only is the setting and atmosphere cozy, but the clues, story line, and pacing are perfect! This author definitely has talent!!! The clues are perfectly and cleverly crafted and lead to the mystery solving. And the characters - you feel like you know them!!! I love this small town and all the characters. Not just the main characters, but the other characters have purpose and meaning in this book.

Hannah is a nice judge at a local flour baking contest, with positive things to say about everybody. The high school coach is also a judge, but not very nice about his judgements.

The high school coach is found murdered. Is it because of the mean things he said about the contestants' entries in the baking contest? Of course, the abused wife is a suspect. Hannah and Andrea solve the murder mystery to find out who is the real killer.

I enjoyed the food and the coffee! It makes you want to brew a pot of coffee and make the recipes.

No household with young children should be without this book. Great read and fun for all. We conisder it a classic.

5 out of 5 stars A DELIGHTFUL BOOK WITH FEW WORDS........2007-09-20

As has been pointed out, there are few words to the text of this work, but to be honest, it really does not need them. the art work, the pictures, are absolutely some of the best I have seen, and pretty well tell the story visually. The text just acts as a sort of prompter. A small mouse has a very big strawberry and is quite fearful that a very big and hungry bear will eat this wonderful, perfect berry. He goes through all sorts of manipulations to hide the berry from the bear. The story is delightful, the color eye catching and it is a blast to read it with a young child. This is a very talented artist and author who have turned out quite a number of books. Personally, this is one of my favorite, but then I like mice, bears and certainly strawberries. I also love reading books to children and they all love it. This is one you will want to purchase for your children. Highly recommend.

Book Description

From an award-winning Native American storyteller comes this captivating re-telling of a Cherokee legend, which explains how strawberries came to be. Long ago, the first man and woman quarrelled. The woman left in anger, but the Sun sent tempting berries to Earth to slow the wife's retreat. Luminous paintings perfectly complement the simple, lyrical text. 5 out of 5 stars A beautifully illustrated book about reconciliation.......2007-07-09

This beautifully illustrated lyrical book is very special. It's story of thoughtless words, anger and forgiveness is told simply, but powerfully. It is a lesson both adults and children can hear over and over. The lush watercolor illustrations are breathtaking. I buy this book as a wedding present, and read it on the last day of classes that I teach, and think of it whenever I bite into a ripe, sweet strawberry.

5 out of 5 stars Get this book!.......2000-12-03

I love this book both for it's great story and because it is a terrific resource for teachers. It's one of those books (like Where the Wild Things Are or Runaway Bunny) that just grabs kids up and speaks directly to things they are deeply connected to. In this case: inequity, anger and how to deal with those feelings.

If you are a teacher (or parent) and want a book that addresses these issues witout being overly complicated or inauthentic - run, don't walk and buy this wonderful book!

4 out of 5 stars First Strawberries - a definite pick!.......2000-05-17

This Cheyenne tale is a great lesson about how words of anger hurt and about forgiveness. Also a nature pour-quoi tale! Can be shared easily with very young, important message for older boys and girls as well as adults. After reading this, eating strawberries will be just a little sweeter!

The land was theirs, but so were its hardships

Strawberries -- big, ripe, and juicy. Ten-year-old Birdie Boyer can hardly wait to start picking them. But her family has just moved to the Florida backwoods, and they haven't even begun their planting. “Don't count your biddies 'fore they're hatched, gal young un!” her father tells her.

Making the new farm prosper is not easy. There is heat to suffer through, and droughts, and cold snaps. And, perhaps most worrisome of all for the Boyers, there are rowdy neighbors, just itching to start a feud.

5 out of 5 stars Strawberry Girl.......2005-07-15

Today I just finished reading a book called Strawberry Girl. It is a very good book. It is a John Newbery Medal book by Lois Lenski. Birdie Boyer is ten years old when she moves to Florida with her family. It is not easy to start a new farm especially when they have troubles like hard snow storms, terrible fires, and especially their horrid neighbors. I can't name a specific part that is my favorite because I really enjoyed it all.

It was a very good book! It got exciting sometimes and sad other times. That is why Iliked this book.

Book Review of Strawberry Girl

The title of my book is strawberry girl. My book is fiction and I don't know if she wrote any other novels. I thought this book was kind of weird because it had an accent to it like (howdy yawl) so I was thinking of dropping it but I didn't so it was ok I guess. Oh and the author is Lois Lenski.
This book is about a girl and a boy. That like each other but their parent doesn't let them be together because of their differences. But they really like each other and they see each other by secret. And their parents don't find out until a while
The characters are very believable because of how the characters act and reflect their feelings because of how they react to things and their feelings to the problems!
I really do not know the author of my book. All I know is that she writes books. And one of them is Strawberry Girl the story was sort of easy. And kind of hard at the same time but the story in general was ok! I say this because that is what the book says.
I thought this book was good because of the wording source and how the character s act I think people that are from the west would love this book and specially people that have that sort of accent.

4 out of 5 stars Berries for Birdie.......2004-11-04

I hereby nominate Lois Lenski's 1946 Newbery Award winning book, "Strawberry Girl" for the Most-Misleading-Cover-Art-And-Title Award of the 20th century. Picking up this story, I was fairly certain that this tale would be a cutesy little number about a girl who picks strawberries for fun. On the cover, after all, you see a little blond barefooted child clutching a cache of yummy red fruit as she walks along in her sunbonnet. I was anticipating Strawberry Shortcake. What I got was "Tobacco Road" for kids. An oddly shocking delight.

Lenski prefaces this book with an explanation of Florida "Crackers". Personally, I've never heard this term used as anything but a base insult. Lenski, however, seems to think that the phrase is deserving of pride. Concentrating on the hardworking rural natives of Florida, she gives a little background on the history of these people in an effort to, "present vivid, sympathetic pictures of the real life of different Americans, against authentic backgrounds of diverse localities". In this case, Lenski interviewed "Crackers" on her own time and used their stories (watered down, as was appropriate) to write this book. The result is a seething concoction of barely contained violence and danger, centered on the lives of two very different Florida Cracker families.

The Boyers have just moved into the old Roddenberry house, and they've got big plans. Originally from Marion County, Carolina, the family attempts to settle into their new life and make friends with their neighbors. Unfortunately, those neighbors include Sam Slater. A nasty man with a penchant for drunkenness, Sam's just the kind of guy who doesn't mind causing his fellow man a bit of trouble once in a while. When the wild hogs and cows of the Slaters start eating the Boyer family's crops, tensions begin to rise between the two households. The Boyers are good hardworking people with pride and bright ideas. The Slaters could be categorized as white trash, never lifting a finger to feed their own animals and jealously coveting those nice things their neighbors have. Our hero of the story, Birdie Boyer, has her own problems dealing with Shoestring Slater, a boy roughly her age who's just as likely to brag or throw a snake on a girl's hat as he is help keep his father's pigs out of trouble or lament his own lack of education.

Lenski does an interesting thing with the beginning of this book. She begins it through the point of view of seven-year-old Essie Slater, leading you to believe that she herself will be the heroine of this tale. As you slowly come to the realization that her father is not the usual wise/good/loving pop found in most 1945 children's books, the text suddenly switches to the point of view of Birdie Boyer and Essie is never heard from again. Lenski's characters aren't as cardboard cut-outish as they first appear either. At the start, the Boyers seem good and the Slaters bad. Then odd occurrences make you begin to doubt this assumption. Mr. Boyer, in an attempt to teach Shoestring Slater a lesson, whips the boy harshly in front of his mother and sisters (who, understandably, are frightened and furious by this violence). Mr. Boyer is also prone to killing his neighbor's pigs if they get in his way, even sometimes cutting off their ears as a sign. He won't even create a path for Slater's cattle herd to reach the nearest water source, instead fencing up the area and getting mad when it's cut down. The Slaters also win your affection at odd moments. Birdie is quick to blame Shoestring for anything he does wrong, but the boy is a good egg in a bad situation. He has to juggle his family's expectations while figuring out for himself what the right and wrong actions he should take really are.

A lot of this book is enjoyable partly because it goes the "Little House On the Prairie" route and explains the day-to-day goings on of the Boyers' lives in interesting ways. In what other children's book will you learn exactly how to grind sugar cane and pull it for fun afterwards? Or the ins and outs of raising strawberries in naturally sandy soil? What other book explains the intricacies of Florida weather in the spring and summer? Or tells you how to create roses out of paraffin? Part of the charm of "Strawberry Girl" is in describing how the old Florida pioneers did it. Less impressive are Lenski's pictures. It was with a heavy heart that I discovered that Lenski considered herself an artist first and a novelist second. That's too bad because the illustrations in this tale are particularly poor. I just couldn't like 'em and I suspect they'll easily deter many a prospective boy reader with their girlyness.

For a surprisingly dour and sharpely written novel about roughing it, definitely try "Strawberry Girl". You might find that the ending suffers from being a little too pat (there's a happy finish there that jars with the realism of the rest of the text) but all in all it's still a very interesting read. For a good Florida based kid's book, both this and Carl Hiaasen's, "Hoot" are excellent choices. A sobering but enjoyable tale.

4 out of 5 stars NeShonda Strawberry sweetness.......2004-05-06

Strawberry Girl is a good book. I enjoyed it because of all the characters and excitment. The characters gave me a good idea of life a long time ago. I don't think I would have liked to lived in those times. Birdie Boyer worked very hard trying to be a strawberry girl. She had lots of chores to do each day plus go to school. The family worked hard too, things changed for the family when the Slaters came to visit. Birdie knew the Slaters would cause trouble for her family. The family pulled together and things turned out fine.

You really can't go wrong with SS! All the books and movies are wholesome and entertaining. I love reading them to my daughter and watching the movies with her. Actually, my son loves them too but would never admit it to his friends (he's 9). Good thing he has a little sister ;)

I bought this for my daughter the summer before starting kindergarten and she loved it. I read many "going to school for the first time" books that summer and this was a favorite.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect for your kids starting school or going back!.......2005-09-15

My little girl started Kindergarten this year and I bought this book to help encourage her to look past her shyness and fears of meeting new people. This book starts off with Strawberry being excited about meeting the kids in her class and also she has to decide what clothes she wants to wear. The pictures are colorful and very pretty.

The book also goes through lunchtime, naptime, and recess. At the end of the book she tells her friends that she will see them tomorrow, which really was great for my daughter. She loves the fact that she has a bunch of friends.

I have another book about Strawberry. "Sleep Over" is the title and its also a favorite of my daughters. Get them both- you won't regret it.

5 out of 5 stars There's no white on the pages........2007-07-03

This is the most colorful children's book I've ever seen, and yet it isn't overly busy with color. Each two-page spread has a single picture with a colorful border around it. The text is written into the negative space on the picture itself.

Although the book is for our 5-year-old daughter, our son, 6, spent about an hour looking at the pictures and said, "I wish I knew how to read well enough to read all of this." I replied that I could read it to him, to which he said, "Yeah, but I want to read it over and over right now!"

The stories are as good as any Strawberry Shortcake DVD's, with good moral lessons about friendship, patience, honesty, etc...

And what a great price!

5 out of 5 stars It's great.......2007-01-31

This is 6 stories in one and I'm pleased with the "moral of the story" of each of them. It's a nice size and colorful, etc. My 2 year old daughter loves it and will even more once she understands all the words.

5 out of 5 stars Great Buy.......2007-01-11

This collection is a must for any Strawberry Shortcake fan. It is really hard to find a variety of Strawberry Shortcake books in England, so I was thrilled to see that this book included quite a few stories. My 3 year old twin girls make me read these stories over and over again and they are all good. We also love "Strawberry Shortcake Goes To School".

Book Description

John Marshall Tanner is a reluctant survivor. Some days, as he lies in a hospital bed struggling to recuperate from a near-fatal gunshot wound, he figures life is hardly worth living.

One of the few people who can bring him out of his depression is young Rita Lombardi, in the hospital for surgery on a disfiguring birthmark and clubfeet. Rita and Tanner walk the halls together, pulling their IVs behind them, discussing the big and small issues of life: Rita's love for her friend Carlos and her passion for her special corner of the world -- the strawberry fields of California's Salinas Valley.

Rita has been around the strawberry industry since childhood, and she knows that strawberry picking is brutally hard work, and that only the landowners make money from it. In Mexico the fruit is called The Fruit of the Devil, perhaps not an inappropriate designation.

As Rita leaves the hospital for home, walking tall and straight for the first time in her life, she and Tanner pledge to stay in touch. She wants to show him her valley and the plight of the migrant workers, many of them illegals, who work so hard for so little.

But Rita never gets to welcome Tanner to her town of Haciendas. When Tanner recovers enough to call Rita, he receives some devastating news.

Rita is dead, murdered by an unknown assailant.

There will be no marriage with Carlos, no children, no daughter to comfort Rita's mother in her old age. There are rumors in town that Rita was no saint, she was a revolutionary. She wanted to organize a union in a place where unions were welcomed neither by the landowners nor the workers. Was that enough reason for somebody to want her dead? Or was the reason behind her murder more personal?

His guide is gone, but Tanner soon heads for Haciendas to see what he can learn. The San Francisco private investigator is working for free, and he'll stay as long as it takes. His client is Rita, and she's not around to pay.

Life goes on, however, and one of the pleasanter parts of Tanner's life is his give-and-take with attractive San Francisco Deputy D.A. Jill Coppelia, who wants to pick Tanner's brain on police corruption and perhaps investigate other parts of his body as well. Tanner's attracted to her, but he must be careful. And then there's the question of the bequest....

Strawberry Sunday thrusts author Stephen Greenleaf into the topical world of today's headlines, where he boldly showcases the best of his talent. As critics and readers have long known, John Marshall Tanner is broody and tough and vulnerable and altogether memorable, and Greenleaf is one of our great masters of detective fiction.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Tasty Greenleaf.......2001-05-26

This excellent Greenleaf novel opens with Tanner recovering from a gunshot wound in a hospital. He meets a young woman there who has many more problems than himself. She gets him back into "life". But later she is found murdered. Tanner has made promises to her and intends to carry them out. Villains had better beware. Great stuff!

5 out of 5 stars Worthy of an Edgar........2001-02-16

Strawberry Sunday, by Stephen Greenleaf, was nominated for an Edgar Award, 2000 -- and reading it, it's not difficult to see why. This is a mystery novel with a social conscience and a wry sense of wit. It begins with the hero, P.I. John Marshall Tanner in a hospital recovering from a gut shot and mourning the death of his close (cop) friend Charley Sleet, but most of the action takes place in the California Salinas agricultural community. Tanner has resolved to find out who murdered Rita Lombardi, a fellow hospital patient who wants to better the life of farm workers.

There are lots of red herrings, wonderful characters, and witty and often hilarious dialogues with them (and with himself). Tanner often reaches wrong conclusions and gets plenty of egg on his face, but in the end he prevails; he's a tough guy with loads of grace. Strawberry Sunday is a punchy, funny, touching novel. Read it.

5 out of 5 stars Terrific, as usual.......1999-05-11

As a long time fan of Greenleaf and Marsh Tanner, I thoroughly enjoyed Strawberry Sunday. I love books that inform and challenge me as well as entertain, and can always count on this author to accomplish that.

A rumor has been circulating that Greenleaf planned to retire the Tanner series, and with the last book seemed to have done so, in a most excruciating way. With this book, Marsh has been returned to me and I can imagine him, one of the rare really good people, continuing to do what he does best.

4 out of 5 stars Intrigue and justice among the migrant workers - well-done!.......1999-02-28

Marsh, battered in body and spirit, finds his own cure in the migrant strawberry fields. His search for a killer puts him back in focus.

Greenleaf's language mastery captures the essence of the migrant worker's plight and engages the reader in Marsh's quest for justice.

5 out of 5 stars Well Done! Interesting characters, settings, plot.......1999-02-16

Did you every wonder where your fresh strawberries come from? Or the pears, peaches, grapes, pineapples on your table?

Stephen Greenleaf explores the agricultural caste system through the voice of his private investigator first person narrator, John Marshall Tanner.

Tanner is a great narrator: an intelligent, world weary private eye. Tanner goes off to the strawberry fields of the Salinas area to investigate a murder, then two, and actually three. But this isn't a story of violent murder; it is a story of agricultural communities, of dating in the l990's, of small town politics, of family rivalries. Tanner's weapon is simple: he asks questions. The answers eventually fill in the pieces of a mystery.

This is a great read.

Studies treating a wide variety of aspects of knighthood. Topics include the way in which the word `knight' has been used, studying the terminology and ritual concerned with `making a knight'; the circumstances and implications of the knighting of the social elite of England between 1066 and 1272; the difficulties of distinguishing between knight and clerk, as exemplified by Abelard's multi-faceted image; the debt which Geoffrey de Charny's treatise on chivalry owes to the ideas and ideals of knighthood in Arthurian prose romances; and the linguistic competence of the twelfth-century knightly classes as courtly audience of troubadour song. There are also important contributions on the warhorse; and on the fortifications of fourteenth-century English towns, arguing that they were more the expression of bourgeois aspirations than a response to serious military threat. Dr STEPHEN CHURCH teaches at St Mary's College, Strawberry Hill; Dr RUTH HARVEYis lecturer in French, Royal Holloway and Bedford New College.
