Very tiny book.......2007-05-10
Very tiny book. I was not expecting such a small book. Very expensive item for its size.
Book arrived with a grease stain on the cover!
Handy Reference, Perfect for Training Seminar.......2007-01-13
If I had to give a 1-2 day seminar on the subject, this would be a handy handbook. For that purpose, it should be used, not as a general reference on lean manufacturing.
If this review was helpful, please add your vote. Thanks.
The Lean Manufacturing Handbook.......2007-01-09
I purchased this handbook to be used as a quick reference guide and as part training aid when I talk to my Clients in the manufacturing sector. It has completely satisfied these requirements and the other factor that appealed was its true "pocket" size.
Lean .......2006-08-28
Delighted with this book. Firstly it's size is great as when you are on the Gemba (Floor) you can have this in your back pocket and referance it when needed. It goes through the various concepts of Lean in an easy format and then explains the techniques. As a Lean BlackBelt myself, it's a great tool to use in every day situations.
Fantastic Little Book.......2006-06-13
This is a fantastic little book on lean manufacturing written by an experienced and knowledgeable industrial engineer. The author's in-depth knowledge on the subject enabled him to distill the critical and important elements of lean manufacturing and convey it in an easy to understand and follow format.
The book has clear definitions and explanations of concepts like JIT, lean manufacturing, waste (over-production, wait time, transportation, processing, inventory, motion and defect waste), value stream mapping, quality at source, cellular manufacturing, production leveling, Kanban and Kaizen, among other useful and interesting concepts.
The book is excellent value for money. It is recommended that one buys it for the whole company if involved in manufacturing operations.
Book Description
This fifth edition of the classic text, Strategic Management of Health Care Organizations, introduces strategic thinking, strategic planning, and strategic momentum to advanced undergraduate and graduate students as well as practitioners in the field of health care. It demonstrates how strategic managers can become strategic thinkers with the crucial skills to evaluate the changing environment, analyze data, question assumptions, and develop new ideas.Swayne, Duncan, and Ginter present methods to develop and document a plan of action through strategic planning and illustrate how, as managers attempt to carry out the strategic plan, they evaluate its success, learn more about what works, and incorporate new strategic thinking into future planning, strategy formulation, and situational analysis. They demonstrate how strategic management "maps " can provide the direction needed for successful implementation. In this new edition, all chapters have been revised and contain new or updated Introductory Incidents and Perspectives. Appendix A has been revised to match the new model of strategic thinking, planning, and managing the strategic momentum. Twenty real-life case studies, including nine new cases and three updated classics, present diverse strategic situations in an accessible manner that enhances the applicability of the concepts for students and professionals. The text is supported by PowerPoint slides and an Instructors ' Manual. Visit www.blackwellpublishing.com/swayne for details.

Both conceptual and practical tools.......2007-04-11
This is an outstanding book. While naturally oriented to strategic management of health care it is also a comprehensive framework to strategic management in general. The book's layout is that of a university textbook but it is also written in an enjoyable style. I read this book as a practitioner and not a formal student and found it extremely readable and helpful. The authors present both conceptual and practical tools for strategic management.
Excellent book.......2006-12-14
I would highly recommend this book. It is easy to read, methodical in approach and provides a balance of relevant theory and application. A useful resource for any healthcare organization expanding its services within existin country or beyond.
Thanks extended to the authors...I look forward to other additions!!!
Excellent Book.......2004-03-03
I was fortunate enough to be a student of Linda Swaynes @ UNC Charlotte. We were the first class to use this book. Not only was Ms. Swayne excellent at what she taught but the book was a tool that explained the theories in nice detail. I continue to use the book as a resource. I am currently a hospital CEO.
Great balance of theory and practice.......2001-11-29
I used this text for a class in health care management. I was impressed by the readability of the text, the incredible amount of information it contained, and the great balance of theory with practical approaches. Many books about management are a bit short in the area of practical tools. This one gives you tools to work with. I used the outline of this book to do a strategic analysis of an organization with which I work. The only significant weakness of the book is the uneven quality of the case studies. These were contributed by outside authors. Some of these are terrific, others are not well written and not so helpful. Hope this gets corrected in the new edition.
A Must for the Novice Planner.......2000-07-27
This comprehensive and yet easily understood text provides the fundamentals of strategic management as it applies to most any health care organization. The authors' experience comes to life in a variety of real examples and cases throughout the text. My background and interest in strategic planning led me to thoroughly examine the step-by-step processes, and I was amazed at both the simplicity and applicability of each. Definetly a text that I will recommend to anyone entering the healthcare industry or strategic planning arenas. Not only was I benefited by the purchase of this text, but had the opportunity to meet these outstanding authors in person during graduate study/research.

Excellent FM handbook for 2001 and beyond.......2001-05-07
A very comprehensive manual (31 chapters, over 500 pages) for any level of facilty management professional. Each chapter is written by practicing professionals and "expert" consultants. Given that the field of FM covers so many areas, it is useful to have many different perspectives from professionals in the field formed into one big book. Chapters are grouped into phases of FM disciplines, i.e, planning, design, management, technology. There are high level topics such as Strategic Facility Planning, Sustainable Design, Portfolio Management and Business Transformation. Also very detailed, nuts & bolts for topics such as Financial Management for FM's, Energy Management, System Implementation for CMMS (Maintenance systems, Benchmarking, Condition Assessment, and case studies for CAFM technology. Brief chapter summaries are provided to assist reader with content coverage. There are lots of graphics/figures which help readability of this thick book, as well as a CD with websites and templates for RFP's, standards and process related functions.

You can't tell a bookby it'd cover........2007-01-18
This book is a little pricy and is not really intended for the small job shop.
The Lean Manufacturing Employee Training Manual.......2005-12-06
Being a newcomer to Lean Manufacturing, this book enabled me to bring the lean concepts to my employees in an easy to learn format. Now everyone in my small business is on the same page as we implement these Lean Manufacturing Techniques at every level of the company. We have already seen savings from cutting our wastes and using the Just-in-Time process!
The Lean Manufacturing Employee Training Manual.......2005-08-31
Good overall outline for Lean Manufacturing training but weak on detailed content. If you are not already a "Lean" practitioner, this book is not going to be helpful in establishing employee training course detailed content.

Comprehensive coverage of MPC in theory and practice.......2007-06-09
It remains for others better qualified than I am to determine whether or not this book is "the definitive guide for professionals" but I do consider it to be one of the most informative and one of the most valuable I have read thus far. The comments which follow focus on the Fifth Edition (2005) in which the co-authors (Thomas E. Vollman, William L. Berry, D. Clay Whybark, and F. Robert Jacobs) update, supplement, or delete material from previous editions as well as add new concepts "in response to changing needs." They also explain that they revised the basic organization of their book "in response to changes in the environment in which manufacturing planning and control (MPC) systems operate."
For example, the implementation of enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems and the continuing decentralization of decision-making to the factory floor. The environment has also become more complicated by the proliferation of globalization initiatives. As a result, the authors note, "the interconnectedness of manufacturing firms has increased substantially. The implication of this is that companies are now often integrated as customers of their suppliers and integrated with customers whom they supply in complicated ways. This has created the need to manage some very complex supply chains or networks." Vollman, Berry, Whybark, and Jacobs produced this Fifth Edition in response to changes such as these.
Of special interest to me is the material provided in Chapter 4, "Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) - Integrated Systems." For various reasons that the authors cite, it is highly desirable, in fact imperative that decision-making be centralized if the given system is to take full advantage of economies of scale. Redundant transactions must be minimized, if not eliminated. With regard to knowledge management, information must be captured at the source, with any process of transactions fully documented. (Many senior-level executives express the same exasperation: "If only we knew what we know!") In fact, all processes must efficiently support the data needs of the ERP system. Hence the importance of communication, cooperation, and especially, collaboration at all levels and within all areas of the given supply chain. Moreover, a set of performance measures must be formulated in coordination with appropriate policies, procedures, and objectives. Economies of scale can also be achieved if fewer software and hardware platforms are needed during ERP implementation.
Credit the authors with their effective use of various reader-friendly devices as they present their material. For example, check out the Brief Contents and Contents pages that offer an uncommonly specific explanation of what is covered in each chapter. (The latter is the most detailed I have as yet encountered in a business book.) Also, the recurring sections (e.g. Company Examples, Concluding Principles, and References) at the conclusion of most chapters. Many readers will probably refer to the Contents more often than to the Index.
Although this volume will probably be most valuable to those enrolled in business courses and especially if preparing for certification by the Association for Operations Management, I think it will also be of interest and value to those about to embark upon or are now involved in process improvement initiatives. Some of the best opportunities to eliminate waste while increasing efficiency and productivity can be found within a supply chain.
Might be the best source for a manufacturing systems designer available........2006-09-06
Dense. Rich. Thorough. Comprehensive. Authoritative. This well-written book presents manufacturing planning & control systems in abstract enough terms to separate them from any particular implementation, yet concretely enough to base your more detailed designs on. In software development terms, it's at the level of Architecture, High-level design and requirements. But it's not limited to software systems -- it's about work functions and processes too.
You leave the book feeling that you get it in some way, at a conceptual level, how a manufacturing endeavor has to be structured and what the various processes are that have to be intertwined and coordinated for it all to work.
The authors take an in depth look at the evolution of "classical", "functional" manufacturing (as reflected incrementally in informal shop floor systems, to MRP & MRPII, to ERP) as well as newer intrafirm management systems like JIT and "lean manufacturing". The thrust of the text, though, is on the nascent developments leading to "lean organization", "lean enterprise" and "lean supply chain". The leading edge of this evolution is the appearance of interfirm supply chain systems that focus on improving the entire supply chain and sharing these improvements with all of the links in the chain.
Overall an excellent, if somewhat slow, read.
Great reference for the professional........2004-07-20
This is just what I was looking for. I am a programmer and need to know exactly how the latest procedures for inventory control actually work. The techniques are explained in great detail, giving me exactly what I need. Lots of current information about Supply Chain Management with actual company examples included in every chapter.
Book Description
This book captures the story of a widespread movement of churches that are expanding their ministries to include multiple formats, venues, and locations, using dozens of in-the-trenches examples, identifying the primary reasons churches succeed as well as how they overcome common snags on the route to “one church—many congregations."
Customer Reviews:
Must read for any church considering multi-site.......2007-06-08
Geoff Surratt and team provide an amazing resource for any church considering a multi-site strategy. This book is extremely informative, asks probing questions to help you think through why you want to go multi-site, how to do it, etc. They provide great tools to help you create timelines and budgets. It has been a fabulous resource to help my church start moving aggressively toward our vision to go multi-site. Before reading the book, I didn't know where to start. Since reading the book I feel like I have a much better understanding of the challenges and opportunities and I have a better idea of how to get our church moving towards this goal.
Good, but not great.......2007-05-29
The book is good, but comes across as a "how-to" manual, rather than as an opportunity to give testimony of the Lord's faithfulness. I'm sorry if that sounds cynical, but I'm not convinced that as Christians, passionate for the Lord's glory, we need that kind of approach as we seek new ways of creatively sharing the good news about Jesus.
A Must Read For Growing Churches.......2007-03-08
A wonderful book that gets you thinking about a vital growth barrier- your facility. There is no one way to go multi-site, and I really like how this book shares the various different ways of expanding our church without either building a larger facility or starting another church altogether. A great win-win! We will definately be going multi-site and my leadership will be reading this book as a next step.
Awesome Book!.......2007-01-18
This book is right on and I believe completely that this is the way the Lord is moving His Church. In a time of mega churches, it takes mega dollars to make them happen. I see the multi-site church revolution as being a way where God takes awesome churches, doing awesome things and allowing them to grow horizontally vs. vertically for a fraction of the dollars. Our church is moving in this direction and it is so much more strategic than to build a bigger building. Thanks for the inspiration! Todd - Horizons Community Church, Ham Lake, MN.
Thinking About Your Church Meeting in Different Locations? READ THIS BOOK.......2006-07-11
I love this book. Here is why!
* It's original. I have not found another book that discusses this model of reproduction.
* It is full of relevant information. These guys have done their homework. They have researched the issue thoroughly.
* It's short. 200 pages.
* It's full of stories. The book is full of stories of real life churches and leaders who have listened to God and are pioneering this model. I learn a lot from stories.
* It focuses on application. At the end of every chapter there are workouts that will help you apply what you've read. There are assessments, checklists, charts, and graphs to help you wherever you are at in the process.
* It is written for all kinds of churches. Churches of any size and any age. It's written for rural, suburban and/or urban churches. This book does NOT say that multi-site is the ONLY model and it does NOT say there is only ONE WAY to do multi-site. It is full of principles that can be applied whatever your situation.
If you are even thinking about doing church in multiple locations it would be beneficial to invest a few dollars and read this book.
