Book Description

Enter the Omega Rx Zone!Seven years ago, with his bestselling book The Zone, Dr. Sears alerted the American public to the growing dangers of high-carbohydrate diets and how they were responsible for our current epidemic of obesity. With his simple dietary recommendations for moderate carbohydrate consumption balanced with low-fat protein and heart-healthy monounsaturated fat, he has helped millions lose excess body fat, treat heart disease and diabetes, and reverse the aging process.

In The Omega Rx Zone, Dr. Sears greatly expands the potential of the Zone to alter how we think about chronic disease in general -- and in the process allows us to reach our full genetic potential as human beings. Drawing upon his own research as well as recently published studies, he shows how a revolutionary new technological advance in fish oil manufacturing, never before available to the general public, may be the magic bullet that will transform medicine. This new pharmaceutical-grade fish oil offers extraordinary health benefits ranging from helping to treat chronic disease to improving athletic performance and emotional well-being. What makes high-dose fish oil so beneficial? It allows your brain to work at peak efficiency, controlling the hormonal responses that ultimately govern your body and your emotions.

So how is this new generation of fish oil different from yesterday's dreaded cod liver oil? As Dr. Sears explains, the fish oil doled out by our grandmothers and currently sold at health-food stores has never been pure enough to be used in the quantities it takes to feel its potential benefits. The new pharmaceutical -- grade fish oil is more concentrated, free of danerous toxins, and has been clinically tested with spectacular results.

The Omega Rx Zone is a groundbreaking dietary program coupled with guidelines for supplementation using pharmaceutical-grade fish oil that allows us to fine-tune our minds and bodies to reach the full potential of the Zone. With his solid research, practical advice, and infectious enthusiasm, Dr. Sears continues the evolution of his Zone technology that will enable everyone to reach his or her maximum genetic potential for optimal health and vitality for life.

5 out of 5 stars Best Book Ever on Essential Fats.......2004-12-29

This is the definitely the best book available on this topic - avoid all others because they aren't any informative than a brochure (I've bought them all).

He presents highly specific information while still not getting too academic.

One caveat: you certainly don't have to get his outrageously expensive fish oil products. I get the Natural Factor's Dr. Murray fish oil from either iherb.com, vitaminlife.com, or www.thdv.com. I also get 1/3 of my daily fish oil from puritan's pride (consumerlab.com says they're free of all toxins)

In general, he gets a little too paranoid about contaminants. Check out consumerlab.com for acceptable products.

Good Luck!

The OmegaRXZone is an excellent source of information on Omega 3 Fish Oil and what it may do to improve your health, both mentally and physically. A tremendous amount of studies on Omega 3 are being done and many more that have been completed. Sear's OmegaRxZone gives you a summary of many of the already completed research projects in simple language that the layman can understand rather than searching through medical articles that usually go way over our heads. The book suggests that large doses of the oil may may improve several major health problems that Americans are suffering with. Taking Omega 3, eating within " Zone " guidelines, a little walking and staying away from partially hydrogenated fats has turned the lives and health of many of my clients around. The book is a sales pitch for Sear's Oil because it is purer than most other company's Omega 3, an important factor as the oceans become more polluted. It is also a pitch for the Zone Nutrition program, which is probably the safest and one of the least restraining weight loss programs out there. As long as the salesman is selling a great product it is worth " the listen. " My only relationship to Sears is that I believe in his program and feel he is doing what he can to get America healthy again. This book is for #1. Nutrition buffs, #2. People who would like to be educated about the good effects that the right combination of foods and Omega 3 can have on your body, #3. Adults with health problems such as Heart Disease, Arthritis, Cancer and Neurological problems.

My wife always brought home and tried several different "diet" books. I was (and still am) skeptical of most. Then, coincidentally on the same day I came home from the doctor with a Cholesterol reading of 285, she brought home from work (library) a copy of this book. I read it. First one made some sense in terms of balanced eating lifestyle. In retrospect, I see now it is all his old stuff + High grade fish oil. But for a first timer, it was helpful. There are, as I found out later, plenty of info on Fish oil. But the Balanced, lo-grain diet was most helpful, and avaiulable in the other books. And one can get a good quality Fish oil (Dr. Murrays RX Omega from iherb.com) at a real reasonable price.
After being in the ZONE for 4 months and taking Fish Oil, my Total cholesterol dropped to 204! And my weight dropped 25 lbs!

5 out of 5 stars It really works!.......2003-08-26

This is a great book for the lay reader. It introduces one to a set of difficult concepts without ever talking down to you but not requiring you to get a degree in biochemistry before reading it. There is a wealth of references to studies done by major universities around the world which is really appreciated. I started using the Zone Dietary protocols in 1995 when his first book was published, Enter the Zone. It worked just as he said it would. Over the last two years I've strayed and gained about 10 lbs of unwanted body fat. Having recently gotten myself reorganized, I've started again and not only has the fat just melted off, but my BP has lowered. I've also started taking the Omega3 and can tell a difference. There are other books on Omega3 but Sears has a way of dealing with the subject that gives one the sense of talking to a family member about the stars: he's right there and present and witty and smart. I only wish I'd known about Omega3 years ago. It, too, works. And what in this day of endless infomercials is more fascinating than to find something that works just as its promoter says it will???
My only criticism of the book is in the editing and proof reading. The publishers should be horse whipped.

5 out of 5 stars This book is brilliant.......2003-06-09

His writing style is very clear and easy to follow. Or at least it was for me, since I am trained as a Chemist.

It was nice that he explained some very basic details that are missed when people get stuck in their fad diets.

1. Rebuffs the Atkins diet (high protein, high fat, low carbohydrates) as being metabolically unbalanced. And explains WHY.

2. Makes a clear distinction between "good" and "bad" carbohydrates. Fruit and vegetables ARE carbs, but they are generally "good." But even among them, some fit into the category of "bad." (Corn, potatoes, mangos).

3. Points out the regulating what you eat consistently (i.e., at each meal) is a better way to go than going on six week diets. There is no way to lose weight but by eating right.

4. Shows the *detailed references* upon which his reasoning is based. And demonstrates how his diet was tested and survived the authentication process in other studies.

5. Explains some things that are often overlooked: A. The obstructive bureaucracy involved in the FDAs assignment of categories to foods and the resulting slowness of change of conventional diets (The FDA is the reason that drugs cost so much in the US, in spite of what some of these babbling neo-hippie protestors would have us believe about "corporate greed.") ; B. The fact that humans are eating higher levels of foods that were actually not available to use 100,000 years ago when people were essentially the same as now, but with different diets. We were actually not evolved to eat such things as we are now; C. Debunks some of the common myths about exercising and then eating *whatever* after that will undo all that you've just done.

6. Gives the Reader's Digest version of the behavior of the body under abnormal circumstances (excess insulin production, etc.)

His writing style is also fabulously easy to read, and the book is set up in such a way that you can find the papers to get more detailed discussions of some facts of which he gives the Reader's Digest version in the passages.

Some aspects may be too technical for people who don't have any background in science. And in that case, then you can get "Entering The Zone" and it will tell you essentially the same things as this book does, without the emphasis on high dose fish oil.

I'm sure that Dr. Sears has made a lot of money on this book. It's Stephen Covey revisited-- Packaging old wine in new bottles and making a mint off of it.

5 out of 5 stars Great resource!.......2007-02-08

This is a great resource to have for travelling. I love the tabbed setup that makes it easy to get to the section I need. Obviously a lot of thought was put in to making the book (with an amazing amount of info.) as easy to use as possible.

It is obvious that a great deal of thought and experimentation has been put forth in the making of this valuable resource!

After being gf (and other things free) for 5 years, I appreciate the resource as it will make it far more possible for me to visit Italy (and other countries in my future) maintaining my health as much as possible along the way! Well done!

I have dining cards and they work quite well, but the next time I travel, I will be packing this book to take as well, without a doubt!

4 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Resource For Dining Out Gluten Free.......2007-01-25

Eating when you're away from your own home is always a challenge when you are on a special diet.

In "Let's Eat Out!" Koeller and La France have put together an impressive amount of information to make life easier for travelers and people who just want to eat out with family and friends.

I found the book a bit difficult at first because there is just so much content to sort out. It's definitely not a book to digest in one sitting!

I soon realized it really is a combination of broad reference guide and quick reference "cheat sheets." Once that became clear, it was much easier to scan and use the table of contents and index to find specific information. You can choose to just use the quick guides or go to the more detailed explanations.

All in all, the authors cover a very broad topic in an orderly fashion that makes it easy to locate information for a variety of situations. They use 7 common cuisine types, from American Steak and Seafood to Thai, to analyze the issues a diner can expect to face. They offer comments on the ingredients, the way food is prepared and on likely sources of hidden cross contamination.

After you read a couple of these, you begin to see the patterns and it would not be so difficult to apply the same process to another type of food. As they point out, it's all about educating yourself and learning what questions to ask.

Poring through their food/menu analysis, I discovered to my dismay that the item I had been selecting from a fast food restaurant most likely contains hidden gluten that I would not have thought to question. I did wonder why I didn't feel good every time I ate there!

Not only does the book cover information about individual foods, styles of cuisine, and 10 common food allergens, it also provides specific information about travel including contact information for individual airlines and the special diets they provide, contact information for associations and organizations in many parts of the world and even some translation phrases.

I'd recommend "Let's Eat Out!" as a valuable reference book. It's especially useful for those who frequently eat out or travel and even better, those who'd like to eat out more but have hesitated to take the risk. It could open up a whole new world.

The authors deserve the recognition that their book received as a Benjamin Franklin award finalist for 2006 in the Health (Wellness/Nutrition) category.

3 out of 5 stars For gluten intolerance and food sensitivities.......2007-01-20

"Let's Eat Out!" covers a very difficult topic, restaurant dining for people with food allergies and intolerances. For adults who should avoid top allergens due to mild to moderate food allergies and intolerances, this can be a very useful book. I have already referenced it a few times for some restaurant inspiration, outside of my usual Asian selections.

The book itself is stylishly laid out with color-coded chapters, strategically placed photographs, useful charts, and sample menus. It addresses ten of the most common food allergens: dairy, eggs, wheat, gluten (an intolerance), soy, peanuts, tree nuts, corn, fish, and shellfish.

It should be noted, that this book was written with celiac disease, multiple food "sensitivities", and gluten intolerance in mind. It may not be very appropriate for those who have life-threatening food allergies or severe intolerances. This is not to blame the authors. The various styles of food preparation combined with a high risk of cross-contamination in food service kitchens, make this a complicated area to address. Though, as one food allergy mom pointed out to me, the "Allergy-Free" title is a bit deceiving in this respect.

Also, for those who do have true food allergies, this book should not be used as a dining bible, but more as a suggestion based resource for further research and diligence. As someone who lives with a milk protein allergy, I unfortunately noted many errors with respect to the foods listed as "not containing the allergen." Guacamole (often made with sour cream), margarine (frequently contains lactose and/or milk protein), and sausages (many brands contain cheese) were just a few that caused me to raise the red flag. Your own questions and food label reading would still be required when utilizing this book.

Luckily, the authors do relay what questions to ask, and in many different languages. Kim Koeller has traveled extensively while living with multiple food allergies. This is well evidenced by the resources provided, including a multi-lingual phrase section and what seems to be a very useful airline guide. For those most interested in travel, the authors of "Let's Eat Out!" have also produced a "Multi-Lingual Phrase Passport" for food allergies that is pocket-sized. I thought this was a very handy little guide!

3 out of 5 stars Let's Eat Out!.......2007-01-09

Basically, it says be suspicious of EVERYTHING. As a Celiac, I am already. This book did not help me and I was disappointed but I can see how it might help someone newly diagnosed. Being vigilant is the key.

3 out of 5 stars Its OK...........2006-12-22

I was a little disapointed because many of the allergy graphs show gluten as possible, so that isn't much of a help, since that was already a given. I guess if you are looking for some where to START looking for gluten in your food, then this is a place to start. If you have been doing it for a while, then you really don't need this book....

5 out of 5 stars One of the most important Medical finds in Nutrition!.......2007-09-15

I have survived a most certain terminal cancer. In fact the MD Anderson Cancer Center, in Houston Texas, says that I'm the only one to have survived in the whole world.

But, as an aftermath, I have severe chronic pain because my brain has rewired itself due to the horrible pain I went through fighting the cancer. The condition is referred to as the Gate Theory. It now can be seen on MRI's. It took me 6-months to find the right doctor to treat it. He's been a pain specialist for 17 years and belongs to a group of doctors who rely on "MD Evidenced Nutrition" to understand what "natural" things work.

He put me on a heavy dose of Morphine to counter the pain, but he also put me on Fish Oil, not just any fish oil, but the oil referred to in this book, and I started thinking better and have taken on some minor work as a result. It's almost been a miracle.

Long_chain-fatty-acid-3, pharmaceutical grade, has done wonders. Because of this book I now understand why.

Many doctors assisted Dr. Sears in the writing of this book so that civilians, like me, can understand it. It's not a "fad" book at all. Just look in the back and you will see over 100 pages of clinical references backing up what Dr. Sears states in the book.

It's a must have to stay well and a must have to survive a serious illness.

5 out of 5 stars excellent explanation of essential fatty acid nutrition and decreasing inflammatory prostaglandin production.......2007-02-01

The Omega Rx Zone, by Barry Sears is an excellent explanation of essential fatty acid nutrition and decreasing inflammatory prostaglandin production. Dr. Sears successfully translated volumes of leading edge biochemical research into an explanation non-researchers can comprehend, with some sustained effort. Other books explain the fundamental Omega 6/Omega 3 essential fatty imbalance, but most fail to explain how increased Eicosapentanoic Acid (EPA) can inhibit excess inflammatory prostaglandin production, by down regulation of the 5 delta desaturase enzyme. In addition Dr. Sears explains how decreasing Arachidonic Acid levels reduces production of numerous inflammatory leukotrienes, produced by LOX 5 and LOX 15. More importantly, Sears explains how increasing EPA and Decosahexanoic Acid (DHA) can dramatically reduce symptoms of Attention Deficit Disorder, Depression, Osteoarthritis, Emphysema, Alzheimers Disease, High Blood Pressure, Atherosclerosis and other disorders. Sears provides many anonymous case histories illustrating patient improvements with high dose, pharmaceutically distilled fish oil. Sears also explains cultural variations in essential fatty acid intake which correlate with depression and suicide rates. The Omega Rx Zone is a surprisingly readable explanation of some complex biochemistry and immunology.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent omega-3 research.......2006-01-08

This book gives a complete and easy to understand of the complex way in which the EPA&DHA long-chain fatty acids influence the hormonal system, and how their lack in the diet affects the body. The author explains why eating fish is not the best way to get omega-3's, mainly because of the heavy chemicals that fish accumulate in their tissues. He describes the differences between different types of fish oil and why (in his opinion) pharmaceutical-grade fish oil is the best way to supplement omega-3. He explains which blood test will tell you how healthy you are.

There is also a very interesting hypothesis on how a diet rich in omega-3 helped the development of the human brain in its early stages of evolution.

There are detalied explanations of how diseases such as cancer and auto-immune illnesses are related to long-chain omega-3's. The author explains how "silent" (cell) inflammation is the cause of many (if not most) major diseases today, especially chronic conditions.

There are explanations of the relationship between omega-3's and emotional well-being, as well as how they improve mental abilities.

As a sidenote, apparently there is currently only one brand on the market that satisfies the author's standards. They have a comparison table on their website showing how their brand offers the most omega-3 per dollar (to convince that it is worth the high price)--but they only compare with certain brands--and I know of at least another highly respected fish oil brand that offers even more omega-3's for half the price. So the only argument left is that pharmaceutical-grade fish oil is completely free of contaminants, whereas other types of oil are not. This argument is in my opinion not very strong, because there are enough brands (such as the one I was talking about before) that have levels of contaminants so small that they are not detectable in a lab--therefore which are really of negligible risk (compared for instance with the toxic substances found in our tap water).

Nevertheless, the in-depth analysis on the remarkably positive effects of EPA&DHA's on health is excellent, and I highly recommend this book.

Product Description

Did you know that the root cause of serious chronic diseases such as heart disease, Alzheimer's disease, cancer, arthritis, and asthma has been identified as chronic inflammation? Although numerous studies have confirmed these findings, few physcians are aware of or consider the fact that the battle against inflammation is at the forefront of the fight for health and well-being of the global population. Authors Joseph Maroon and Jeffrey Bost have set out to reverse that trend with "Fish Oil: The Natural Anti-Inflammatory." Pharmaceujtical companies have spent billions of dollars in an attempt to understand the bio-chemistry of inflammation. Unfortunately, pharmaceutical anit-inflammatories such as Celebrex, Vioxx, and Bextra have been shown to greatly increase the risk of heart attack, stroke, and uncontrollable gastric hemorrhage, with potentially fatal consequences. Is there a safer alternative? Absolutiely! The answer lies in the power of the omega-3 fatty acids found in fish oil, undeniably the most under-recognized and also the most petent natural anti-inflammatory available. With compelling arguments and the results of thousands of clinical studies to support them. the uathors explain in plain and simple terms; How the inflammation process works and how it can evolve into a chroninc condition that is the cause of many diseases; How fatty acids work in the body; Why supplementtion with omega-3 fatty acids can restore the body's balance and mitigate the effects of inflmmatory factors; and why fish oil is the best source of omega-3 fatty acids, and how to identify good-quality fish oil supplements.

I started reading this from the back for the practical information on dosage and purity, but I'm already impressed. It's a pleasure to find a very recent book that lays out the science and data in a readable form. And once you're past the rah-rah cover (which the publisher probably insisted on), the tone is very objective. I'll be able to pass this on to a skeptical relative without it seeming like it's selling snake oil!

This book is exactly what I was looking for. It occurs to me, though, that it may not be an easy read for someone without science or research background. It's well written, but there's definitely a lot of terminology to process and absorb. For someone looking for a lightweight read, maybe one of the other books on the subject would be better.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Insight to Curing Chronic Inflamation.......2007-03-14

I have never been motivated to write a review before on Amazon.com, but I feel compelled to for this book. I have suffered for many years with chronic neck and joint pain and recently had my second surgery in ten years. After the surgery, I received a copy of this book. It offers a new way to examine the causes of chronic arthritic pain and logically and scientifically lays out the case for adding certain types of omega 3's to one's diet to help lessen pain. I am not a believer generally in "alternative medicines", but I also do not want to risk a lifetime on aspirins/ibuprofins or other "real medicines" which can have serious long term side effects as well. This book carefully details how the absence of fish from our modern diet has increased the natural inflamatory response of our bodies to the point where it is now hurting us rather than protecting us. Though thoroughly researched and well documented, this book is an easy read for the nonexpert. It also discusses omega 3 effects on other ailments such as alzheimers, cancer, depression, attention deficit disorder and others.I recommend this book specifically to anyone who has chronic arthritic or other spinal or joint related pains as well as to others who are seeking new ways of approaching other illnesses.

Book Description

All foods are good. That is the message of this commonsense book that helps parents speak to their kids about food and nutrition. It is a message that is long overdue, especially when you consider that 81 percent of ten-year-olds are afraid of being fat -- half are already dieting -- and twelve million American children are obese. There is a disease gripping our nation's children and it strikes early. Take the Fight Out of Food offers a cure.

This practical guide is filled with hands-on tools and in-depth advice for putting a stop to unhealthy eating habits before they begin. In Take the Fight Out of Food parents will learn how to:

• Understand their own "food legacy" and how it affects their children

• Keep their children connected to food in a positive way

• Talk to their kids about food and nutrition

• Recognize and deal with the six types of eaters --

including the Picky Eater, the Grazer, and the Beige Food Eater

With guidance, inspiration, and encouragement, this invaluable book helps parents to teach their children to eat for life in a positive and healthy family environment.

5 out of 5 stars For PICKY EATERS !!!.......2007-07-30

My grandson is THE pickiest eater I have ever experienced, and this book gave me insight on how to relate to it! Relax, children will eat when they are hungry!!!

4 out of 5 stars makes you feel better.......2005-10-17

There wasn't anything that I thought was revolutionary here, but since I tend to get really stressed when my son doesn't eat (especially since he's pretty slim) this book helped and continues to help me relax some about it. I understand that my pushing food on him is a bad tactic in the long run. So, I'm glad I have it. Two unique things: a focus on our own "food legacy" that for some may ring true but for me was just not really an issue (I didn't have overly involved parents pushing or preventing my food habits) and two-a stronger focus on OVEReaters (reasonable in this era of obesity but far from my area of concern).

It may give you some peace of mind.

5 out of 5 stars Finally a book that really helps.......2005-06-11

Finally a book that really addresses the needs and wants of both parents and children. As a mother of four, I am finally able to help each one of my children develop their own eating styles that will enable them to have a healthy lifestyle. Thank you!

"I was constantly running after my 2 year old with food; that's how worried I was that he was too thin. Even though my doctor said not to worry, I always left the office wondering what to do, and how to stop worrying; this book saved me from becoming a nervous wreck and from creating more problems!"

I was being driven nuts by all my kids' different demands for meals! This book helped me figure out how to deal with all of their differences, and to stop fighting about it with my husband! Excellent guide !

Book Description

Dr. Barry Sears is one of the world's most trusted voices on health, diet, and nutrition. Over the past decade, millions of people worldwide have followed his prescriptions for healthy living through his bestselling books. He introduced the world to the Zone, a state of improved hormonal control that has helped a generation of people lose excess body fat, reverse the aging process, and fight heart disease and diabetes.

In The Omega Rx Zone, Dr. Sears reveals a revolutionary new technological advance that helps treat chronic disease, improves athletic performance, and more. Never before available to the public, pharmaceutical–grade fish oil has the potential to make you a more emotionally stable, healthier person by allowing your brain to work at peak efficiency and controlling the hormonal responses that ultimately govern your body and mind. Drawing upon his own research as well as recently published studies, Dr. Sears shares new understanding of heart disease, cancer, depression, Alzheimer's, attention deficit disorder, chronic pain, Type 2 diabetes, infertility, and multiple sclerosis. Used in conjunction with the Zone program, these findings can help you to:

•Increase brain vitality and longevity

•Maximize physical performance

•Lose weight –– and keep it off

•Reverse chronic disease

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent omega-3 research.......2006-01-17

As a sidenote, apparently there is currently only one brand on the market (his own) that satisfies the author's standards. This argument is in my opinion not very strong, because there are enough brands (such as the one I was talking about before) that have levels of contaminants so small that they are not detectable in a lab--therefore which are really of negligible risk (compared for instance with the toxic substances found in our tap water.)

Nevertheless, the in-depth analysis on the remarkably positive effects of EPA&DHA's on health is excellent, and I highly recommend this book.

2 out of 5 stars Breakfast of egg whites!.......2005-01-30

No thanks!
Here we go again with saying that eggs are bad for you. Eggs have so many good things in them, especially the yolks. My brother gave them up and his steak and then died of pancreatic cancer.
Dr Sears says the only fats that are good for you are olive oil, some nuts (macadamia, almonds, and cashews), and avocados.
I'm sorry, but eggs are the most natural food in the world. All kinds of animals eat them and they don't leave the yolks and just eat the whites. Balderdash!
No cheese, milk, etc, no breads, pasta, rice.
Not much left is there.

I agreed with him on the trans fats (hydrogenated oils) which by the way are in almost every packaged food, and I agreed with him on the omega 6 fats, but otherwise this is just a diet that no one could stay on. He focuses also on calorie restriction but then says you will never be hungry on his plan. Yeah, right.

I read "Sugar Busters" and it says the same thing but it focuses on insulin levels which is what is really making Americans fat.

5 out of 5 stars A leader in nutritional medicine.......2003-11-26

It saddens me that such a great book gets criticised because the author sells the product promoted in the book. What else is he supposed to do if he researches a specialist field, recognises the tremendous value of a product, develops it and tells people about it in his book? After reading this book in order to review it for Positive Health Magazine (UK), I would rank it in the top ten most educational books on nutritional therapy and medicine. Barry Sears may be making a good income from his metabolic discoveries, but I believe that is because they are important breakthrough discoveries, not because of marketing hype. Having said that, he is a scientist, not a holistic nutritionist, so some people may need to use this book's information as part of a broader program in order to get the best health results.

4 out of 5 stars medical & health benefits of pharmaceutical fish oil.......2003-08-23

A year ago tomorrow, I walked into a bookstore in desperation and bought all the books on nutrition I could find that made sense to me. Within days, I exchanged most of them for the Zone books. Within 2 weeks of practicising the Zone haphazardly, I got spectacular results on my blood cholesterol test, the first encouraging results in five years. I have continued in the "Zone lifestyle" faithfully while reading perhaps 70 nutrition and exercise books in the meantime.

The OmegaRxZone represents the most recent in the series of Zone books, containing the most up-to-date information on Dr. Sears' dietary technology. It might be called, the "Zone with emphasis on pharmaceutical grade fish oil and recovery from illness."

Pharmaceutical grade fish oil can be taken in bigger quantities than health store grade fish oil. There is now an EPA/AA test (see yourfuturehealth.com) for $260 that can show whether bigger quantities of fish oil can help your health condition.

Dr. Sears has taken criticism from those who say they are completely healthy already. They argue that his assertions about the role of EPA and DHA in preserving health are unproven. Meanwhile, many desperately sick people have regained their health and think otherwise. The August 2003 newsletter on drsears.com contains one such testimonial from a fitness instructor.

Dr. Sears apparently sees his role as a standard setter. In the year since the publication of the OmegaRxZone, other pharmaceutical grade fish oils besides his own have come out at lower prices. If he were truly mercenary, he would have maintained his affiliation with the ZonePerfect company. He parted ways with them several years ago because he wanted to upgrade the quality of Zone bars. The ZonePerfect company has recently been bought out by a sports bar company (read candy bar) for huge dollars. That would have been the way for him to cash in if he really were in it for the bucks. His long-range view, gathered from the Q&A archives on his website, is that acceptance of his dietary technology will take 25 years.

Do you need this book versus any of the others? That's difficult to answer, because Dr. Sears seems to take a slightly different tack to explaining his system. If you are a convalescing heart attack victim, you might want to approach cooking with laboratory precision, but if you have immortal youth, you might be satisfied with more improvisation.

The short answer. For the quickest summary of the benefits of the Zone and various methods of putting it into practice, A Week in the Zone may be the best single book to start with (paperback, has some typos). If you collect all the Zone books, you will want this one, too.

The long answer:
Enter the Zone - the classic, also the best written
Mastering the Zone - learn to read Nutrition Facts labels - good for athletes
Age-Free (originally Anti-Aging) Zone - very detailed on life extension
Zone Perfect Meals in Minutes - cookbook w summaries of Zone used in
workshops for diabetics.
Zone Food Blocks - dietician/cooking reference
The Top 100 Zone Foods - favorite of some
The Soy Zone - for vegetarians and vegans
A Week In The Zone - reader's digest summaries
OmegaRxZone - medical & health benefits of pharmaceutical fish oil
The 28-day Makeover - (due at year's end) - sounds commercial

The Zone has often been misrepresented in the press. The "experts" who pick at the Zone admit that it's probably good for you. Have you noticed how many books now copy Barry Sears' format of presenting macronutrient ratios?

Nobody can disprove this statement: The Zone is the most moderate and balanced way of eating out there - it is a lifetime eating plan, not a remedial diet. It can adapt to all kinds of requirements; it does not completely forbid any food.

Is the Zone difficult to put into practice? Yes, it can be exasperating, since much of the food supply contains hi-glycemic carbs and harmful fats. Just how much of those "difficult" foods do you want to consume? If the Zone does nothing more than get you to understand the "Nutrition Facts" labels on food containers, Barry Sears has done you a great service.

3 out of 5 stars secondary gain?.......2003-06-25

Type Fish oil/Omega 3 on your favorite search engine-and look what comes up.

This guy is trying to sell his Fish oil supplement like mad.
How much faith can you place in a book like this when it's clear this man has a tremendous vested financial interest?

The book does summarize interseting research on omega 3 fatty acids. However, it can at times be one sided.

For example, he lauds the value of omega 3 fatty acids in psychiatric disease, but newer studies (by the National Institutes of health) have FAILED to show any positive effect.

5 out of 5 stars Simple & Easy to Use - A Practical approach to eating out.......2007-06-27

This guide is extremely to use. It provides sample menus that you'd see at Chinese, Indian and Thai restaurants. Then you are provided with descriptions of each dish and how it is prepared and the ingredients used. From there you are provided with specific considerations as to how the preparation or ingredient list may affect you if you have Gluten or Allergen issues.

This book is the size of a passport and very organized and well written. The Chinese, Indian and Thai Cuisine Passport is perfect for making choices while traveling, or while dining at your favorite local restaurant.

    1 out of 5 stars A real disappointment.......2006-11-10

I bought this little book because I am gluten intolerant and was traveling to Asia. I had hoped for lists of common food items I could eat or phrases to help me ask about what was safe and did not find the information I wanted.
