Beth Hensperger and Julie Kaufmann's The Ultimate Rice Cooker Cookbook offers 250 timesaving, convenient, and healthy recipes for making everything from simple white rice to full-course meals. This cookbook proves the rice cooker--which tends to have a bad rap as a never-opened or oft-neglected wedding gift--can be surprisingly versatile: not only does it prepare your rice, it can be used for every dinner course--salad, soup, vegetable, entree, and even dessert.

There is a complete buying and cooking guide for the many rice varieties, as well as other whole grains such as barley, millet, wheat berry, and quinoa. Many of the recipes provide convenient alternative cooking methods for traditional dishes like Italian risottos (the Italian Sausage Risotto is wonderful). Hensperger and Kaufmann show the rice cooker can also work miracles for hot breakfast cereals and porridges with such recipes as Hot Fruited Oatmeal. Delightful main courses include Steamed Ginger Salmon and Asparagus in Black Bean Sauce, and the meal is done almost exclusively within the rice cooker for simple preparation and cleanup. The dessert section has many ideas beyond the expected Old-Fashioned Rice Pudding--the Poached Pears with Grand Marnier Custard Sauce is one elegant and sophisticated example. Both authors of this cookbook are seasoned food writers and this combined effort gives tasty, easy, and healthy recipes that will motivate you to use what has been, until now, an underutilized appliance. --Teresa Simanton

5 out of 5 stars Very good as a simple reading.......2007-08-12

Even if you don't buy this book as a companion to a fuzzy logic(high recommended), it's still a really good read about rice. The only thing that is a let down about the book is the detail information, the print type, and occasionally the layout. Also, the biggest thing that is frustrating me with the book is trying to figure out how to measure liquids. They give conflicting,IMO, advice on how to measure out liquids and go on to say that "...always specify the difference." I didn't find that to be clear or the case in some instances. (If anyone can clear that up for me, that would be great.)
Otherwise I still would recommend this book, and will probably buy 2 for family members for Christmas. It's worthy of being on a kitchen bookshelf.

This cookbook has a big variety of recipes to try in your rice cooker! If you have recently bought a rice cooker or had one for a while & want to learn more ways to use it, then get this book! I must add a lot of the recipes will require a rice cook with fuzzy logic (or the more advanced/expensive cookers.)

I am new to rice cookers and I found this book to be very helpful... There are so many recipes that everyone will find lots to choose from... I refer to this book every time I use my cooker... Everyone who has a rice cooker should have this book.

3 out of 5 stars Ok but kinda vague.......2007-04-05

Bought this cookbook due to good reviews and theres not many out there. It has some ok recipes, but ingredients are not handy, and who wants to search at several stores. Some things are talked about such as mixes that come out well, but no instructions on how they were cooked. I would buy again but mostly just for ideas not recipes. (a few pictures would be nice also).Too bad more books have not been written.

The "Standard Methods" is very well understood even for those in the non-Chemistry area that deals with environmental chemistry/geochemistry of natural waters. Besides the analytical work, many important aspects related to sampling and data interpretation are there. The 2005 Edition makes these tasks much easier.

Book Description

Can you really lose twenty pounds in a month? Will you really keep it off this time? With The Rice Diet Solution, you will! The Rice Diet Program has been helping dieters successfully lose weight since 1939. Now in book form, this world-renowned weight-loss method can help you change the way you eat forever.

The Rice Diet Program in Durham, North Carolina, was one of the first medical facilities in America to use diet as the primary way to treat disease. On this high-complex-carb, low-fat, and low-sodium whole-foods diet, "Ricers" lose weight faster, more safely, and more effectively than people on any other diet. Men lose on average twenty-eight to thirty pounds and women on average nineteen to twenty pounds per month! The Rice Diet also detoxes your body, ridding it of excess water weight and toxins from processed foods and the environment. The program's results have been documented by extensive studies and confirmed by thousands of people who report amazing weight loss, as well as immediate improve-ment in such conditions as heart disease, diabetes, and hypertension. After all the other diets out there have failed them, people find that the Rice Diet is the one that finally works -- for good.

Here's how it works: The Rice Diet strictly limits salt and sodium-rich ingredients. Salt, like refined sugar, is an appetite stimulant, so when you reduce salt intake, you lose water weight and are less inclined to overeat. The Rice Diet also limits saturated fats and instead relies on carbohydrates (fruits, vegetables, grains, and beans) as the main source of nutrition. The fiber cleanses your system and satisfies you so you feel full quickly. The Rice Diet makes it easy to limit calories; when you're eating foods that truly satisfy your hunger, it's a challenge to eat 1,500 calories per day!

To make it easy to follow the program, The Rice Diet Solution includes hundreds of tasty, filling, easy-to-prepare recipes -- some from the Rice House kitchen, others inspired by major chefs and adapted to Rice Diet standards.

The Rice Diet is not just an eating plan. It's a physical, emotional, and spiritual program that will change the way you live, giving you new vitality, energy, and longevity. Ricers report that the Rice Diet not only helps them solve weight problems they've struggled with their whole lives but also teaches them a whole new way of healthier, more mindful living.

Whether you want to lose twenty pounds or two hundred, the Rice Diet can help you do it -- finally and forever.

3 out of 5 stars "It's not what's in the rice, it's what's not in the rice".......2007-08-26

Maddening.

Take some great weight loss ideas, framed with good science. Add a dash of pop "detox" tripe. Go into a long lecture about gummy bears. Then toss in some intriguing but complicated recipes. You end up with The Rice Diet Solution: The World-Famous Low-Sodium, Good-Carb, Detox Diet for Quick and Lasting Weight Loss, by Kitty and Robert Rosati, a registered dietitian and a physician, respectively.

This is a low-sodium, low-fat diet plan, that includes less red meat, more fruits and vegetables, more complex carbs, exercise, maintenance follow-ups, and stress reducing exercises. The first week results in low calorie consumption, less than 1500 calories a day. Between exercise and this 1500 cal/day diet, you WILL lose weight, guaranteed.

Founder Walter Kemper found "...it was almost impossible for [his patients] not to lose weight following the diet [of rice and fruit]" (p. 9). BTW, this is the reason it is called the "Rice Diet" as opposed to the Duke Diet, the Kemper Diet, or the Rosati Diet. He also said, "It's not what's in the rice, it's what's not in the rice."

So how does the Rice Diet work? There are three steps:

1. Diet in the following manner:
a. 1 week of grains, fruits, and veggies. This is the detox period, with 1000-1200 calories/day.
b. keep the same diet, but add some non-fat dairy, and you get animal protein once a week.
c. Maintenance while you add more foods.

2. Be a mindful eater. Pay attention to what you put in your mouth, and how you cook.

3. Find supportive people or groups, and surround yourself with them.

I'm irritated by the discussion of "detoxing." They note, "The overall goal of Phase One is to cleanse and detox your body's system of excess water weight... excess sodium, [and] allergic-like symptoms from a range of potential offenders from our food supply (e.g., pesticides, fertilizers, antibiotic and growth hormone does animal products, and others" (p. 31). In addition, "How does the Rice Diet detox the body?... This is probably an impossible aspect to actually quantify or prove but many signs of detoxification occur" (p. 58). Let me repeat that, "This is probably an impossible aspect to actually quantify or prove..." Then why is this coming from a physician and a RD?

Still, except for this "pop-nutrition", everything makes sense. Eat less meat, more fruits and veggies, more whole grains, less sugar, low-fat, high fiber, and exercise.

The book has more. It includes recipes and product suggestions. Some of these product suggestions seem way too specific: Yogurt? "Stonyfield Farm is best" (p. 49). For bread, try "Galliee Splendor Bible Bread" (p. 44).

I did try a recipe last night. The Bouillabaisse recipe on page 250 caught my attention. I couldn't get my hands on any fresh fennel, and I thought 1/2 to 1 teaspoon of saffron was a bit much (have you seen the price of this spice?). I used fresh bay leaves instead of dried, I chopped the garlic cloves (the recipe didn't specify), and given that I didn't have 2 1/2 cups of "hot fish stock" on hand, I used an 8 oz bottle of clam juice and another 12 oz of water (this also dilutes the salt in the clam juice). I mixed and matched my seafood with what was available... a pound of size 31-40 shrimp, a pound of Alaska salmon, a half pound of tilapia, a can of packed crab (no salt), and 8 oz of fresh mushrooms.

It was delicious. I served it on hot rice, in honor of the Rice Diet. MIne served 6, not 10.

Most of the recipes seemed fairly complicated. They definitely are not fast food. They are also a bit pricey, not an impossible situation, but one to be aware of.

But the Bouillabaisse was so delicious!

So the Rice Diet didn't seem to have any fatal flaws. It had a few pop-nutrition issues, and I really didn't like the gummy bear story. You will lose weight if you eat 1500 calories a week. You have to find a way to maintain your healthy weight when you readjust your calories to 1800-2000 calories. You should always exercise.

Be well.

5 out of 5 stars Rice Diet Solution_ The Solution.......2007-01-13

I have not finished reading the book from cover to cover, but I have been following the program and have lost about twenty pounds. The recipes are excellent. I have recommended the publication to my friends. I do believe with this book I can finally lose the weight I have been trying to lose for many years. Also it has helped me keep my blood sugars under control. The price was good too.

5 out of 5 stars Losing weight is the smaller benefit.......2006-12-26

My wife and I stumbled upon this book last May and made a commitment to give it a try for one week. We were both overweight to the tune of about 40 pounds each. At first, the diet seemed a challenge because it was so different from our eating habits, but as the first few days went by we both noticed how much happier we were with everything in our life. Much to our great surprise these feelings continued AND we continued to lose weight. Having lost the weight we both marvel at how easy it seemed to be, after many attempts to lose weight via other diets and methods.
I agree with one reviewer that the book is not cross referenced very well and that it is a cumbersome read, but the benefits we got far, far outweighed such a trivial matter.
It is a lifestyle change that works very well for us, having lost most of the weight we wanted to, and are happier as an unexpected benefit. Give it a try for a week and see if you feel better. Perhaps you will experience it the way we have, and your life will be changed forever.

5 out of 5 stars Spectacular Spectacular.......2006-12-23

It's the most accurate description in my vernacular. This book is an extraordinary work. Combining dual strategies of both portion control and low energy density eating, this text provides superior support for sustained weight loss as is evident by their high success rate (63 percent keep weight off for 1 year or more, 43 percent for 5 years or more). Low sodium intake is an integral part of the diet which includes fruits, vegetables, grains, legumes and low fat dairy. There are 4 parts, the diet, mindful eating, daily rest and social support. I can't speak highly enough about the Rice Diet Solution.

1 out of 5 stars Wouldn't recommend it........2006-12-20

I was not impressed with this book. I guess if you get to the point where you no longer want to taste seasonings in your food, this would be great. In addition, I would be too afraid to lose weight on this diet only to go back to eating real food and gain it all back again. I've decided to just cut back and get in some exercise, and IT'S WORKING!

Book Description

Rice writing as A. N. Roquelaure.

In the traditional folk tale "Sleeping Beauty," the spell cast upon the lovely young princess and everyone in her castle can only be broken by the kiss of a Prince. Anne Rice's retelling of the Beauty story probes the unspoken implications of this lush, suggestive tale by exploring its undeniable connection to sexual desire.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars HOT STUFF!.......2007-10-01

It was so entertaining, in lots of ways. Don't read it if you want to keep the story of Sleeping Beauty innocent in you mind.

3 out of 5 stars Not Free SF Reader.......2007-09-03

Take the domination and control Sleeping Beauty fairytale world and a new twist, and a lot of straps, paddles, ropes, and other elements of bondage and discipline.

Young royalty in this land are sent to serve older masters and mistresses in whatever way they see fit, most of it involving sexual situations, in general. This includes both mail and female.

1 out of 5 stars They all suck.......2007-08-31

I read all three of these novels about a decade ago. They suffer every fault listed in the other reviews. Rice is absolutely fixated with forced homosexual abuse that goes beyond BDSM. And don't think you'll catch her balancing out the scales with lesbian sex, either. She's simply obsessed with homosexual rape, everything else is merely setting.

5 out of 5 stars Left Me Wanting More.......2007-08-26

Claiming is beautifully written and gives you exactly what you want if you want erotica. It has something for everyone. I could not wait to get my hands on Punishment after I finished this book.

5 out of 5 stars Either you love it or you hate it.......2007-08-21

There are some VERY mixed reviews on this book. It is for me, by far, one of the most erotic things I have read. I couldnt put it down and it stayed in my mind for days after finishing it. (I have read it 3 times now). I thought the 'Sleeping Beauty' aspect of it was a nice twist. All I can say is, Anne has one heck of an imagination. It is not for the squeemish however as literally almost every single page is filled with some sexual innuendo and MUCH more. If you are not into kink, then this book is probably not for you. However, I didnt think I was all that into it either until I picked up this book...

Exotic, beautiful, and instructive, this "mathematical folktale" by author-illustrator Demi emerged from her love of India. The narrative and the evocative illustrations combine to create a real sense of the culture and atmosphere of this romantic land.

It's the story of Rani, a clever girl who outsmarts a very selfish raja and saves her village. When offered a reward for a good deed, she asks only for one grain of rice, doubled each day for 30 days. Remember your math? That's lots of rice: enough to feed a village for a good long time--and to teach a greedy raja a lesson.

Book Description

A reward of one grain of rice doubles day by day into millions of grains of rice when a selfish raja is outwitted by a clever village girl.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great book for all ages, really!.......2006-12-29

I have purchased 5 copies of this book - one for my kids and the rest as gifts. I've also suggested it to others to give children as gifts. My older son is 2 1/2 years old and he enjoys this book. Certainly, I can expect an older child, around 5 or older, to get more of the mathematical detials from the book, but my son likes it too.

Instead of reading the numbers aloud, I show him that Rani shared the single grain of rice with this bird, 2 grains with that peacock.. the bagful of rice with the tiger... etc. He loves it. The illustrations are outstanding!! I always feel like I'm reading a book from the "royal" archives when I pick this up.

Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars A lot to learn, including girl-power.......2006-04-19

This is Demi's re-telling of an old folktale of a king who orders that all rice in his kingdom must be stored in the royal granaries so that there would be food in times of famine; but when his people start to go hungry, he refuses to open the granaries, claiming that the situation was not bad enough to warrant doing so - until a small child outsmarts him by asking for a grain of rice doubled every day for a month.

I love this book because there is a lot to be learned from it. Of course, there is the math: the concept of doubling and how quickly doubling makes the numbers grow. There is the art: lovely Indian-inspired illustrations with stunning gold effects. There are also moral lessons, namely that power can corrupt, and that even a small child can teach a mighty king.

Then, there is a special lesson for all little girls everywhere - that girls can do math. After all, the math-smart hero of the story is a little girl herself.

5 out of 5 stars a tale to delight both young and old.......2005-11-02

My daughter is three and loves this book -- not just for the gorgeous fold-out illustrated spread of the caravan of elephants carrying the rice on the 30th day -- but because she can follow along with the story. The tale is of a rich greedy rajah who doesn't want to share, but is then outwitted by a young girl and forced to give up all the grain in his storehouses. At the end, he is humbled and vows to be a more fair and wise ruler. My daughter loves to sit with one grain of rice in her hand like Rani on the title page of the book. I can see her forming rudimentary mathematical concepts, but I won't push it. There's plenty of time to return to this book when we introduce the times tables.

The visual progression of the increasing volume of rice is shown by the variety of animals which deliver the daily ration. First, just a series of birds with grains of rice in their beaks. Then on to a leopard, a tiger, and a lion each carrying a small pouch in their mouths. By the sixteenth day, a goat is pulling a cart on which sits a bag of rice. On the twenty-fourth day, eight deer each bring her a basket strapped to their backs. And so on until the enormous procession of elephants! The last page of the book is a very useful table called "from one grain of rice to one billion" which shows the actual numerical progression. Demi outdid herself with this book, which any homeschooling family will find useful.

5 out of 5 stars One grain of rice = many valuable lessons for students.......2005-08-29

One Grain of RIce is not only a book of math, it is also a folktale. It shows how rice can grow from one grain, to two grains,to four grains, to 8 grains to 16 grains and all the way up to a whole barn full of grain.
It also tells of how people were treated by the leaders of the country in which they lived. A very valuable lesson.

5 out of 5 stars One Grain of Rice A Mathematical Folktale.......2004-10-18

The story One Grain of Rice A Mathematical Folktale, has a worthwhile theme, teaching morals and the importance of keeping one's promises. The book also touches on the need to plan for the future, as well as teaching a mathematical concept. The book tells the story of a village girl named Rani who outsmarts a raja; teaching him a valuable lesson in the process.
The illustrations are just as important as the text in telling and moving the story along. The drawings of Rani appear to move across the page--drawing the reader's eyes to follow her to the next page of the story. The book evokes the reader's curiosity and encourages him/her to predict the outcome of the story. The reader is touched on an emotional level with the introduction of the real-life situation of famine and one person's humanitarian solution to the problem.
From a mathematical viewpoint the story provides a base on which to build and expand one's knowledge of patterns and relationships; encouraging the use of algebraic thinking in order to solve the mathematical problem presented in the story. A problem I had with the story was that I felt the story was written at about a 1-4th grade level while the mathematical question it presented was more appropriate for a 6th grade classroom. The book dealt with this by including double-page fold outs that helped to illustrate to younger readers how the number of grains of rice were growing. My favorite aspect of the book was the use of the female character of Rani. The book showed that females are capable of understanding and in some cases outsmarting males when it comes to mathematical concepts and knowledge.
One Grain of Rice provides a multitude of opportunities for teachers and students to research and expand on details presented in the story. Students may want to explore the culture, art, and governments of other countries such as India. They may also want to learn about the different types of animals illustrated in the story, or discover where rice comes from and how it is grown. Teachers may want to expand the mathematical lesson further by giving his/her students the task of discovering how many people the rice Rani received as her reward would feed. The book One Grain of Rice A Mathematical Folktale would be a wonderful addition to any library or classroom.

Book Description

A complete guide to successful learning using Moodle, focused on course development and delivery and using the best educational practices. This unique book gives you more than just a guide to the Moodle software; it uses Moodle as a route to better teaching, more motivated students, and more successful courses. Moodle E-Learning Course Development shows you how to use Moodle as a tool to enhance your teaching. It will help you analyse your students' requirements, and come to an understanding of what Moodle can do for them. After that you'll see how to use every feature of Moodle to meet your course goals. The social constructionist learning philosophy is at the heart of Moodle: we all "construct" knowledge through interation with one another and with learning materials in a social way. Moodle E-Learning Course Develelopment will show you how to add static learning material, interactive activities, and social features to your courses so that students reach their learning potential. Whether you want to support traditional class teaching or lecturing, or provide complete online and distance learning courses, this book will prove a powerful resource throughout your use of Moodle.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars So far, not so good........2007-10-01

My first complaint is that the author abandoned their demo site only a year after publication, so you won't be able to refer to many of the examples in the book. Second complaint, the installation instructions aren't clear or helpful, except for the suggestion to refer to the moodle.org web site instructions. Maybe if I ever get moodle running, the rest of the book will be useful.

4 out of 5 stars A valuable resource for all Moodle users.......2006-11-02

As a long-time Moodle user and trainer, I read Moodle E-Learning Course Development with a critical eye. I work with many Moodle users who are looking for manuals or printed resources and it is important to me that the options I offer are well-written and accurate. On a personal level, I also wondered if, as an experienced Moodler, the book could hold my interest.

Overall, I found that William Rice's Moodle book is a good addition to my collection of Moodle resources. The book held my attention and I found myself highlighting various passages as I picked up new ideas and information. Since reading the book, I have started offering it as a potential resource to my training participants.

Moodle E-Learning Course Development has a number of strengths that make it a worthwhile investment. It is generally easy to read and follow. Most of its sections had information and screenshots that allowed the reader to follow along, step-by-step. While there are some sections dedicated to the more technical aspects of Moodle, they are not overwhelming, rather their inclusion simply makes this book a more well-rounded resource for Moodle users.

The sections on the Lesson module and the Workshop module, two of the most complex Moodle modules are especially well-written. Each setting in these two modules is described in detail. Furthermore, the screenshots throughout the text to accompany instructions are an important component of any well-written technical resource.

The final positive I will highlight is that the examples used throughout the book are applicable to a wide range of Moodle implementations; K-12 schools, businesses, universities, and individuals will all find the examples are general enough to apply to their own situations. I especially liked some of the suggestions geared toward developing your site to promote and drive business; such as in those situations when a person is using Moodle to offer classes for a fee to the Internet community.

While the book has many strengths, there are several weaknesses as well. The first is one that challenges all print materials, especially in regard to technology, and that is the book is slightly out-of-date. Fortunately, many of the components of the book will still hold true despite the version changes. The second weakness is that the screenshots, while useful, lacked any graphics (arrows, etc.) to help the reader identify the parts of the screen being referenced. I also thought that a few of the transitions in the book were difficult to follow; I found myself wondering where the author was headed. Finally, there are a few places in the book where I disagreed with the author about the function of a particular setting or feature. Some of these disagreements may be the result of differences in the version of Moodle, but there are one or two places where the author didn't quite seem to completely grasp the feature being described.

User documentation is a generally acknowledged trouble spot for many open source projects like Moodle and William Rice has made a valuable contribution to the Moodle community. New and experienced Moodlers alike will benefit from William's efforts.

5 out of 5 stars A Complete Introduction on Using and Managing Moodle........2006-10-14

A Complete Introduction on Using and Managing Moodle.

Moodle: E-Learning Course Development is a complete guide to using and managing Moodle. It introduces all aspects of Moodle from technical issues on how to install, backup, restore, where to edit PHP codes, to pedagogic issues on how to put in contents - resources and activities. Each chapter is independent for your reference, but is also developed from simple to advanced control of Moodle system. The book is well-organized with no difficult technical terms or complicated explanation for any teacher who want to use Moodle.

Although some teachers are afraid of the technical issues, such as MySQL database, installation, backup/restore, it is worthwhile to have the necessary technical ideas that will help you to design and manage your course. The book offers the minimal knowledge of server, Php, database for teachers to understand the Moodle system, and then to know how and when to use different tools provided by Moodle.

The book also gives its readers detailed instruction of how to create and mange a course. While there are many options in the Moodle system, the book tell you when and how to use different options. The book categorizes course materials into 3 categories: Static Course Material (text pages, web pages, links to web, file directories, label), Interactive Course Material (assignment, choice, journal, lesson, quiz, SCORM, survey), and Social Course Material (chat, forum, glossary, wiki, workshop). All these are tools to add Resource and Activity in Moodle system. Besides explaining how to add these materials, the book tells you in what occasion to apply the material. For some complicated materials, such as Lesson, Workshop and Wiki, the author gives a very good instruction on how to set up and when to use them. A fly in the ointment is without demonstrative examples. Thus, the readers should not just read, but have to experiment each adding tools by themselves.

The last three chapters are useful for teachers to manage a more inviting course in Moodle including 1) changing or editing theme, logo, header and footer; 2) analyzing students' logs and grades; 3) installing other modules and different ways of backuping Moodle system. These are powerful tools and safety of a Moodle system that teachers should know if they want to have complete control of Moodle.

Moodle is a free course management system which is especially good at social interaction. This system is even better than the commercial WebCT and Blackboard. Teachers should not wait for their institute to install a course management system for them, but begin to follow the instruction of this book to persuade your institute to set up a Moodle or even install a Moodle by yourself. It is a time of open source. Join open source club, and open your mind.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent introduction to Moodle.......2006-09-29

Whether you are a teacher or a site administrator, you will find this book to be an indispensible companion during your first school year using Moodle -- and probably long afterward. I was fortunate to start teaching with Moodle around the time this book came out. When I scanned the table of contents, I was dismayed to discover that approximately half of the book seemed to have nothing to do with me. After all, teachers don't install, configure, or extend Moodle, and teachers (at least at my school) can't create new courses or course categories. As it turned out, I couldn't have been more wrong. As teachers, we are profoundly affected by the decisions made by our Moodle administrators during Moodle setup, as well as the procedures they use to administer the system. Inevitably, we come to realize that we cannot avoid knowing the information in chapters 2, 3, 7, and 9. Fortunately, the author's explanations are clear and do not require a technical background. He illustrates everything using an example site called "Wilderness Skills" which carries through the book.

The author devotes the middle section of the book to chapters covering static, interactive, and social course material. Here, teachers will find excellent introductions to each of Moodle's standard resource and activity types. Readers should not expect more than just enough information to whet their appetites and get them started. For example, the author devotes only ten pages to the single most complex activity in Moodle, the Workshop. While the material in those ten pages is valuable (I referred to it frequently when setting up my first Workshop), a full treatment of Workshops could easily fill fifty pages. In all fairness, the Workshop module is facing revision and any author who devotes too much space to it (or any other feature of open source software) risks obsolescence. Mr. Rice seems to have struck just the right balance here.

The book is remarkably free of error, has a good index, and has been extremely well edited. If you are looking for a book on Moodle, this is definitely the one to buy.

4 out of 5 stars Not bad, could be better.......2006-10-29

I find the organization is a little "off" with learning the tenses and grammar, and there are some small grammatical mistakes. The CD included is good to listen to to hear native accents.

4 out of 5 stars Tremendous method for language self education.......2001-03-12

I've studied Latin, German, Japanese, and French using various popular methods. This course with its accompanying audio and workbook materials is the best language course that I have ever attempted on my own. Most self-study language courses are either too simple to be of practical use or focus so much on grammar and sentence construction that they turn into drudgery after a few lessons. Unless the course material is engaging, it's very hard to continue the course with no mid-term or final exams as motivation. Simply put, I enjoyed this course so much that I looked forward to each of my weekly self-study sessions.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful text book.......2007-09-29

This is a great book. It has everything you will need to learn medical terminology and anatomy. Lots of color pictures. My MIL was a professor at a state university, saw my book and even said it was better than the text books she used. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Great Textbook for Medical Transcriptionists!.......2003-04-30

This was the required text for my second subject in Medical Transcription. It was very good and detailed enough for the beginning transcriptionist to understand where everything is, and to familiarize yourself with more medical terminology. This one seems to assume you already have a beginning foundation in basic medical terminology and how to form medical words using word parts, combining forms, suffixes, and prefixes. I say this because the first chapter immediately launches into a LOT of these word parts with very little discussion on what they are, how to do them, etc. The book has a detailed glossary of medical words, though, and it has these little cardboard cutouts that look like miniature index cards (flash cards) that will aid you in memorizing basic word parts. The book has very long and detailed exercises at the end of each chapter that builds on what you have already learned and strengthens your medical terminology foundation. It also comes with a CD-ROM that has exercises relevant to each chapter. WHen you complete a chapter exercise, the software evaluates your performance and tells you where your mistakes are, then prints out a study plan for you where you can bone up and read about your mistakes. An over-all good book!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars taste and texture .......2007-08-17

Finally, a whole-grain cookbook written by a real foodie! The jacket photo illustrates "Brown Rice Salad and Flank Steak With Asian Flavors," so right away you know your're going to get recipes an omnivore can love. Sure, Sass tells you all you need to know about the nutritional aspects of each grain (although "according to Mike Orlando, president of Sunnyland Mills ... the boiling process [of bulgur wheat] allows the nutrients from the outer layers of the wheat kernels to migrate to the inner core" (98) kinda sidesteps the loss from heat and oxidation--Sass's degree is in medieval lit, not chemistry), but her focus is on taste and especially texture. She emphasizes the textural contrast in "Any-Grain Scrambled Eggs With Salami" (172) and many other recipes. Sure, she has some minor procedural lapses--the grains should be added to the aforementioned recipe only after the eggs have set, but this cookbook is the best and maybe the only comprehensive whole grain guide out there.

Sass offers the basic preparation method for all grains, demystifying categories like "kamut" and "farro," and over a hundred specific recipes from soup/salad through main courses through dessert. Not one that I've tried is a dud and she offers alternate grains for just about every recipe. She even offers intelligent wine choices--again, referring the aforementioned recipe,"try a medium bodied, fruity chardonnay without oak" was a good starting point.

There are typos (for example, in "Anise pignoli cookies" (278) the text reads "form balls 1/2 inch in diameter." That's a mighty tiny cookie, so I tried 1 1/2 inches and it worked great. But such lapses are few. And these cookies taste great (though I live in the Great Basin and prefer the pine nuts from the local hillsides--much fresher and thus tastier than the Italian and Chinese varieties Sass considers). I also tried a friend's batch of "Whole-wheat almond biscotti"(288) and they were superb. Bakery biscotti look good but seldom have more than a faint anise/mothball flavor. Sass's version is the most almond-y cookie yet, and cutting Sass's sugar measure by 1/3--this was the only change my friend said she made--yielded biscotti that went very well with Moscato d'Asti (yeah, Sass eschews wine recommendations for dessert items though she lives in NYC and probably knows people who enjoy this combo at brunch).

I revised my earlier review to include some criticism because I didn't want it to come across as the ranting of a gushmeister. But I'm not damning with faint praise, either--Sass's cookbook is engaging. There's none of the greener-than-thou smugness that informs so many other whole-grain cookbooks. She includes a list of suppliers for some of the harder-to-find varieties (like hull-less "NuBarley"), but she isn't an organic purist and tells you out front if your local super is likely to have the grain in question. Content, format, layout--this is a model of what a cookbook should be.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful clarity, delicious results!.......2007-07-24

Lorna Sass has always been in the forefront of food that is both tasty and life-enhancing, and you can watch the latecomers trying to catch up, huffing and puffing, pretending that her innovations were their ideas all the time. It happened with her pressure cooker books, with her groundbreaking vegetarian and vegan books, and this whole grains book is a masterpiece. it's clear that these recipes are the work of someone who has thought hard and tested them out. Sass thoughtfully provides invaluable advice for both the novice cook and the veteran of the open range, both about these grains, some which were new to me, and the recipes themselves. And the recipes are easy to improvise on by substituting a variety of ingredients. It's a book that is easy to love, and will become one that cooks turn to regularly. I can't write any more -- I'm possessed by a vision of kamut, sausage, sun-dried tomatoes, and broccoli rabe . . . .

5 out of 5 stars Personal Chefs Network recommends this book!.......2007-07-12

I met Lorna Sass in Chicago this year during our annual convention for Personal Chefs Network where she prepared a few recipes from this cookbook. Since I've been home I've prepared many of them with great success. I learned how to use the pressure cooker from her previous books. I highly recommend this book to help you learn the correct way to prepare grains and get to know some unusual grains that will soon be in your local market. When Lorna walked into our convention she had her James Beard award around her neck for this book and she was like an olympic athlete and her gold medal to our crowd of Personal Chefs. Thanks for everything Lorna!

5 out of 5 stars Eating good tastes soooo good!!!.......2007-07-05

I grew up eating a lot of whole grains but got out of it when I went to college. I wanted to get back in to it and wanted some ideas for recipes. It seems so hard to find truly healthy, good tasting recipes, but this book has it. I love everything I have made in it so far (about 10 recipes). I would recommend it to anyone! It's fun to turn these weird (at least they were to me) grains into something that tastes amazing and you feel good eating!

4 out of 5 stars The Whole Scoop on Whole Grains .......2007-07-04

This is a good book for someone who wants to expand his/her range of recipes for whole grains. Lorna Sass makes them sound delicious -- which, I find, is half the battle in getting people to try a new food and her recipes are not fussy. For a cook who is adventurous this cookbook may be too basic, but the descriptions of each of the grains and basic recipes will make the book a useful reference.

Book Description

Neve Halloran and her daughter have shared a fierce love for the austere beauty of Rhode Island’s South County ever since Neve guided Mickey’s first baby steps along the sandy shore. Now, with Mickey a teenager and Neve’s last hope for happiness with her daughter’s loving but unstable father gone, both will struggle to make a new life together amid the windswept landscape that sustains them.

Captivated by a fragile wildlife sanctuary, Mickey will move toward womanhood in the company of a lonely boy who shares her instinctive way with the creatures of the coast. And Neve will find herself drawn to a man who has devoted his life to the sanctuary, but who is unable to share the pain of a recent loss—or reconnect with the father who still bears the scars of World War II.

As winter gives way to spring, and spring to summer, a secret will emerge that has lain buried in the depths just offshore for decades, a secret that will galvanize the small seaside community. For the waters bear their own vestige of the past—and their ceaseless rhythms may point the way to hope and new beginnings.

Lyrical, luminous, and utterly captivating, The Edge of Winter is Luanne Rice at her most penetrating and insightful, in a moving exploration of the bonds that shape us and set us free.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome!.......2007-08-13

I was suprised at the low rating by others of this book. It's one of the best books I've read in a long time. I plan to pass it on to several people. It was so moving. I love the characters and the descriptive setting. I was disappointed when I was finished reading it because I know it will be awhile before I find another book that I enjoy so much.

5 out of 5 stars One of Rice's best novels........2007-07-13

I was shocked to read negative reviews here. I really enjoyed this novel, probably one of my favorites written by Luanne Rice. Predictability seems to be an issue for other reviewers...to that, I say read a mystery if you want less predictability. But for those who want to read a novel that explores the human heart's ability to forgive not only others but oneself as well, this is a story that will keep you interested and inspired.

4 out of 5 stars A Sweet, Lyrical, 'War-Ravaged' Story.......2007-05-20

Luanne Rice's latest novel, The Edge of Winter, was a delight to read. It is not a fast-paced novel filled with mega-action or explosions. There is no big chase scene or hold your breath pivotal moment. What it does have is a slow, steady buildup of plot and an intense look at the lives of numerous scarred characters and how they are intertwined, brought together by old wars, new wars, love, family ties, death, secrets and forgiveness. If you're patient with this book, you'll come to know these characters and care for them...and miss them when you're done.

The Edge of Winter is a journey, rich with details of the land and nature--of snowy owls, windswept beaches and watery graves. It is the story of Mickey and her mom, Neve. A story of sweet, innocent first love and cautious, suspicious second love. Mickey is a teenager with a soft spot for all things wounded, including an injured owl and Shane, a lonely teenaged boy with a passion for surfing. Neve, frustrated with her `deadbeat' ex-husband, is drawn to Tim O'Casey, the ranger from Refuge Beach, where a German submarine had sank off the coast after being bombed in World War II.

When a rich and powerful man decides to raise the submarine and turn it into a museum, Mickey and Shane are spurred on to save the submarine's resting place and a piece of their history. But there are secrets that haunt the waters. Perhaps, the lost souls don't want to be raised. In this story, there are many lost souls who need saving, and that may be its only down side. It may be unrealistic to wrap up every character in a 'happily ever after' theme, but I know (as an author myself) it is so very tempting.

The Edge of Winter is a tribute to Luanne's father, a navigator-bombardier who flew in World War II, and to all the men and women fighting wars, then and now, on both sides. The author writes about the far-reaching and ravaging effects of war that carry on for generations. We are shown how forgiveness and understanding can set free even the most crippling guilt. The last few chapters are very emotional and really bring forth the author's message: "It was war."

A simple but heartfelt summer read with unforgettable characters, perfect for reading while at the cottage or relaxing on a beach. I gave this novel 4.5 stars mainly because my favorite Luanne Rice novel is still Beach Girls.

2 out of 5 stars A definite skimmer.......2007-05-01

I barely made it through this book and the only way I made it through is by skimming a lot of it. It was just dull and I never really cared about any of the characters, they were too contrived and cliche. It's like the author has someone in her family or something that was a veteran so maybe she wanted to write that into a story, but it was just a completely unbelievable plot and it's a contest what I did more, skim or eyeroll.
