Real Milk Returns.......2007-10-01
Schmid very carefully tells the history of milk and once you are informed you will be sickened by current "legal" dairy practices. If you have ever driven by large dairies (especially in Idaho) and inhaled the stink of confined cows and observed the mud and filth they live in this book is a must read. Rock on "Real Milk".
milk.......2007-09-10
This is a fully satisfactory product full of no nonsense information about milk and the politics of its manufacture and distribtion. Anyone interested in nutrition should read this book
Great information.......2007-05-11
This information will change your life. We were already drinking raw milk, but this gave me all the extra ammunition I need for when I'm questioned about it. After reading this, you won't want to buy processed foods, processed milk, or eat at most fast food places. You'll want to make a difference in our food supply.
I enjoyed reading it. He had tons of footnotes/bibliographies.
Raw milk used to be used to heal people. Now we have to fight to get raw milk, because others in power are keeping us from getting it.
Biased and messy, but interesting.......2007-04-11
The book contains a wealth of information about milk's history, clinical studies involving milk, cholesterol, and the food industry & factory farming. However it's difficult for me to trust the information wholeheartedly because of the text's biased, anecdotal nature. Additionally, many highly debatable "facts" are presented with no formal citation, such as "a number of alternative medical practitioners, including myself, have found that raw milk has greatly benefited their immunocompromised patients."
Ron's bias permeates nearly every part of the book. In Chapter 16, his description of a Salmonella outbreak blamed on raw milk from California's Alta Dena Dairy quickly devolves into a diatribe, concluding with "The point is that people need and have a right to choose carefully produced raw dairy products despite the fact that contamination may occasionally occur."
Ron could have put more effort into presenting the information. The book contains hundreds of typographical errors, and many times the text rambles and repeats itself. I found it hard to follow, and many of the chapters seemed arbitrarily divided, and placed in a strange order. Some large sections, such as the cholesterol chapter (ch.10), are little more than summaries of a single other book or publication, containing mostly excerpts from that source.
Again, I think this book contains a lot of important information about milk. However it needs to be taken with a grain of salt. I urge Ron to revise the book to rewrite or remove the biased, anecdotal writing.
finally the truth.......2007-03-08
Whenever the truth is releaved it always rings true in your heart. This is what one feels when reading this book. I Loved it......I cant wait to try "Raw Milk".........

Book Description
This is the basic book for anyone who decides to keep a cow. Fully-illustrated chapters with accurate information on buying, behavior, nutrition, breeds, handling, feeding, milking, health care, calving, and growing feed crops.
Customer Reviews:
I dream of cows..........2007-03-27
I have a dream of someday owning my own cow, maybe a horse, and another pig or two. Being a city girl, I wouldn't have the foggiest notion what owmership of large domestic animals entails. This book lays it all out for you in very pragmatic terms. How much land you need, the total cost of caring for a cow as well as the potential revenue for the milk and cheese. And now, when my country friends are talking about their cow problems, maybe I can even offer a piece of profound advice! (doubtful on that), Buy it, enjoy it.
Keeping a cow is do-able!.......2007-03-09
This book encourages those of us who want to return to our farming roots and obtain the freshest dairy products possible from our own cow(s). He takes the fear out of stepping into caring for a cow for us first-timers. I can't wait to apply what I'm learning!
Tons of information.......2002-09-11
This book has everything you need to know about owning your own cow...kinds of cows and their temperaments, purchasing a cow, how to care for it, fences and barns to build for it, milking, foods to prepare with the milk, breeding and calving, you name it. Much detail is given in each subject, including drawings and pictures, but the author avoids being a bore with his dry humor. We knew absolutely nothing about cows, but now feel some confidence after reading this book!
Good Information - Well written -but somewhat dated.......2000-08-24
The book covers the subject well and is carefully written. It stands alone in that there are no other books for the prospective owner of a single dairy cow rather than a herd. Some of the information is dated; recent improvements in genetics have more than doubled milk production and changed the needs for feed. There is a little philosophizing with a '70s back-to-the-lander slant which I found distracting.
Everything you wanted to know about Bossy, but didn't ask........2000-01-25
This is a wonderfully entertaining book. It is full of essential knowledge, as well as humor. I'm the son of a dairy farmer who is the son of a dairy farmer. I will be the first person to admit that I learned a lot from this book. The subject depth that the author goes into in each chapter is great. Everything is explained in simple terms yet gets very detailed. I would compare his ability to keep a complex subject simple to the writings of Isaac Asimov. I would recommend this book to anyone who has a serious interest in small scale farming, the family farm, or simply wants to know all the essentials about cattle.

Book Description
You probably drink milk at almost every meal. But have you ever wondered where it comes from?
Cows eat special feed to make good milk. But after the cow is milked, there are still many steps the milk must go through before it reaches you. This book describes them all. And you'll be surprised to find how many other things you eat and drink come from milk, too.
Gail Gibbon's unique style makes this a fascinating book for children and adults alike.
Customer Reviews:
Teach Children the TRUTH About Milk.......2005-05-31
This book is a joke. I believe there is a sentence in the book referring to cows having to eat special feed to produce good milk. That feed most likely includes BGH (bovine growth hormone), antibiotics, and animal protein (chickens, pigs, dogs, cats, etc.). The dairy industry has done a great job at sugar-coating the truth about what goes on. The truth is that 1) milk is NOT necessary for children, 2) milk has been linked with various autoimmune diseases including Type 1 diabetes and rhematoid arthritis, and 3) milk is NOT a necessary source for calcium. In fact, leafy greens offer enough calcium.
Please do your research before taunting the benefits of milk. And for goodness sakes, don't teach children a sugar-coated recount of what goes on in processing milk. Tell them that milk can contain feces of the cows. Tell them that antibiotics are necessary for the dairy cows because farmers have given them hormones to increase their milk production and their utters are infected, oozing puss and blood.
I don't know if this review will even get published; I just hope it does.
MILK MAKERS.......2001-12-04
I understand why this was a reading rainbow book. It is a great experiment activity non-fiction book. This book exaplins how milk is processed. Most children most likely think that the milk in the fridge comes from the store. What they may not realize is that it comes from a farm miles away. This book goes into great detail how milk is made, and the makeup of cattle. it also gives brief descriptions of variuos types of cattle and dairy products. The illustrations use labels and bright colors. I think this is a good non-fiction book for children. It is in a language that they understand and it is easily read. The book is also very accurate as are all, her books. Gibbons was raised on a dairy farm and has made numerous trips to the dairy farm.
In close this is a good book for children, especially for a science unit. I would have this in my classroom library for childen to perhaps complete a report about milk or other products. Gibbons has a great series on the way variuos things are made.
Excellent resource book on farming and dairy production.......2000-04-24
This book is highly enjoyable and informative for children, and I think that every child with an interest in farming would be happy to own a copy. I strongly recommend this book to parents everywhere!
Excellent book!.......2000-04-23
this was such a great story for our kids to read - we live near a dairy farm and this book gave them a lot of insight into the real working of a dairy farm - it answered a lot of their questions and ours too! We love this book!
Milk Makers.......2000-04-23
This is a great book for kids - it is interesting, informational, and fun!

Life on a Dairy Farm.......2006-01-17
Follows the Hershey family as they operate their 700 cow dairy farm. Discusses birth to maturity and shows in great detail how cows are milked on a modern farm. The story is told from the point of view of the young teenage son, who avoids such terms as artificial insemination. The photos show a modern, prosperous farm and a happy, hard working family. There is a glossary, extensive index, and list of resources as well as a page of fun facts about cows. Karen Woodworth Roman, Children's Science Book Review

New cow owner.......2007-03-09
Even though my cows are beef and not dairy I found this to be one of the most valuable books I have read. Easy to follow information that applies to anyone thinking of raising cattle on a small scale. Highly recommend !!
Keeping A Family Cow.......2007-01-19
Great Book. Very helpful with first time cow owners. Go to Joanne's website also. Alot of great info. there.
Keeping a family cow.......2006-11-10
This book is an absulute must for those getting a milk cow... very helpful.
Convinced me to leave the city and buy a cow!.......2004-03-24
At the time when I ordered this book, I was living in a trailer park, and researching nutrition carefully. I am a mother of five children, and our family keeps growing, so I want to be sure that our family gets the best nutrition we can. I feel that good nutrition is something every mother should strive to give her children, no matter how rich or poor.
So, after learning that untreated milk (unpasteurized, unhomogenized) is better for your health, I went looking for a legal way to obtain raw milk for my family. I started out at www.westonaprice.org (the Weston A. Price organization is aimed at getting nutrient-dense foods onto America's dinner tables) and could not find any suppliers in my area.
I started looking at the possibility of getting my own cow to milk, and ordered this book. In the first few chapters, Joann explains the value of the cow, and untreated dairy products. Then, she goes on to explain all the how-to's of having a cow. This book alone convinced me that I wanted to leave the city and the trailer park and have some land with a cow!
Since owning the book, I have referred to it often. When my cow got bloat, I quickly referred to the book to find out what to do. I saved my cow's life because Joann's words were right there, even though she lives far away from me. I'm so glad that she wrote this book, and even more glad that I own it. Joann also has an online diary (which I LOVE to read) and an online discussion forum that has been very helpful.
Oh, and one more thing, there is nothing comparable to the taste of food that you've raised yourself, not to mention the superior nutrition and absence of hormones, antibiotics, pesticides, and herbicides. It is a wonderful life, and this book helped me to have the confidence to jump in with both feet and do it!
Worth reading just to savor the first couple of chapters........2003-06-07
Why is modern America so dissatisfied with life? We're rolling in wealth to the extent that we can afford vacations to Europe, boats, swimming pools and $100 concert tickets. We don't have to bother raising or even cooking our own food, because multinational corporations continue to discover ways to produce technologically advanced, highly processed food products at lower and lower cost. We don't have to repair our own cars, clean our own houses, or mow our own grass. We own multiple automobiles, televisions, computers and even places to live. We take advantage of a standard of living that exceeds most other countries on the planet. To quote a popular song, "The Future's so Bright, We Gotta Wear Shades." Why then are so many of us taking Prozac, seeing therapists, and finding less and less joy in our daily lives? It's difficult to contemplate, but many of us somehow feel disconnected from our daily existence. Despite being surrounded by incredible riches, we somehow long for a lifestyle that no longer seems attainable. Something important seems to be missing. No only can't we identify what's missing, we don't have a clue on how to restore it to our lives. Joann Grohman's book, Keeping a Family Cow, provides a great deal of insight into this very issue.
Keeping in character with the book's premise, the author provides a detailed guidebook for nurturing and managing a dairy cow while successfully integrating such a creature into a modern lifestyle. Presented in an easy-to-understand, straightforward manner, the book offers up a plethora of information designed to turn the most inexperienced neophyte into a competent dairyman. The book provides details on animal acquisition, feeding, disease prevention, breeding and food hygiene, and is written in such a way to offer enlightened reading to a diverse audience. Joann also maintains a free web site,..., that provides a discussion forum for cow-related issues. If you've ever contemplated adding a bovine member to the family, this book will go a long way toward helping to make this project a success.
Even though these technical topics make the book worth the price of admission, I strongly believe that there is more to this book than initially meets the eye. During my undergraduate years, I stumbled upon a book called The Continuum Concept (authored by Jean Liedloff) that contrasts Western child rearing techniques with those of more primitive cultures. Even though I was not yet married, and had no interest in starting a family, I realized that there was something about her ideas that resonated with my innate sense of right and wrong. I couldn't identify why I could so easily relate to her views on nurturing infants, but it just seemed as if Liedloff had illuminated obvious truths about human nature that no one had previously discussed.
Joann's writings resonate in the same fashion. The first couple of chapters in the book seem to emanate from someone who shares Liedloff's understanding of human nature. Keeping a Family Cow demonstrates a remarkable insight into the cultural, technological and market forces that have produced the frenzied pace that we all take for granted, and demonstrates how the acquisition of a family cow can restore some of the "rightness" that seems to be missing from our daily existence. There's something incredibly satisfying about Joann's arguments to support the family cow concept, and her writings offer a glimmer of hope that we can somehow find our way back to a lifestyle that is more in tune with our expectations, our evolutionary experience as human organisms, and our hopes and dreams for the future. I can't recommend this book enough.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent Vegan Baked Goods!.......2007-02-03
This is a lovely Vegan Cookbook. Mrs. Keightley has done an excellent job of showing the true yumminess that vegan baking has to offer. She has numerous coffee-cake recipes, one for everyones differing tastes as well as cookies and garlic bread to die for (okay so thats not a baked good, try it anyhoo!) I personally LOVED LOVED LOVED the Apple coffee-cake, moist and delicious. Try this book you will not be dissappointed!
excellent cookbook.......2007-02-02
This is a great cookbook. The recipes are easy to follow and produce delicious results. I especially like the Veganized Baked Pasta, Summer's Secret Spaghetti, Gorgeous Garlic Toast, I Remember Those Biscuits, and soup recipes. You'll get a lot of use out of this book!
yummy in my non-vegan tummy!.......2007-02-01
I am most definitely not vegan, but the food in here is just too delicious not to eat! In fact, I think that 99% of the non-vegans out there wouldn't have any idea that these dishes were vegan in a blind taste test. They would just say "more please!"
A Great Vegan Resource.......2007-02-01
What I like about this book is the fact that it not only introduced me to new tastes and ingredients such as Tofu Piri Piri or the wonders of quinoa, but it also gave me dozens of new ways to put together standard ingredients that I already tend to keep on hand. The recipes range from homey, family fare like Lemon-Garlic Pasta and Gorgeous Garlic Bread to the more elegant Israeli Couscous Salad with Carrot Vinaigrette. Ms. Keightley's forte is putting a new twist on familiar foods. Anyone who can make a chocolate-filled coffee cake seem wholesome and nutricious is A-Ok in my book.
I recommend this cookbook to anyone who is looking for new answers to that ages old question, "What's for dinner?"
A Vegan Coffee-Lover's Delight!.......2007-01-31
Nice little vegan cookbook. Recipes are quick, easy and nutritious... and did I mention delicious? Some handy tips at the beginning, especially on vegan baking (read "egg replacement"). Nutritional yeast figures prominently, for example in the baked quinoa "risotto," and the vegan mac & "cheese." The most intriguing recipes are for vegan biscotti and coffee cakes. Together, these make up at least 20% of the book. Get this book for the vegan coffee lover in your life!

Cow is a udderly wonderful book! Great to read with the whole family. The calves at my house read it over and over till the cow came home and that's no bull.
it's ok.......2000-04-24
i think that this book was good and my kids love it, but from what i've seen there's better out there. don't be fooled by all the pretty pictures. the informational content leaves a little something to be desired....
nice but ..........2000-02-01
This is a very nice book, full of great images. I have to say however that something really bothers me : "cow" tells children that bulls have horns, and cows don't. And that is absolutly false ! I tell you, my cow Daisy is really mad at the author and illustrator !
What an incredible book!.......1999-01-25
A magnificent book! A magical book! A fantastic book! This book will tickle the "funny bone" of any young reader (not to mention any adults in the neighborhood) and provide them with all the information they ever wanted to know about one of Mother Nature's most amazing creatures. Kids will howl and grown-ups will bellow with delight at each reading of this fabulous book. This book is just too good to miss!
