    Book Description

Generation of Swine, the second volume of the legendary Dr. Hunter S. Thompson's bestselling "Gonzo Papers," was first published in 1988 and is now back in print.

Here, against a backdrop of late-night tattoo sessions and soldier-of-fortune trade shows, Dr. Thompson is at his apocalyptic best -- covering emblematic events such as the 1987-88 presidential campaign, with Vice President George Bush, Sr., fighting for his life against Republican competitors like Alexander Haig, Pat Buchanan, and Pat Robertson; detailing the GOP's obsession with drugs and drug abuse; while at the same time capturing momentous social phenomena as they occurred, like the rise of cable, satellite TV, and CNN -- 24 hours of mainline news. Showcasing his inimitable talent for social and political analysis, Generation of Swine is vintage Thompson -- eerily prescient, incisive, and enduring.

4 out of 5 stars The more things change, the more they stay the same.......2006-05-10

This is another in a series of collections of Hunter's columns. The other compilations are:

The Great Shark Hunt (Gonzo Papers Vol. 1) about the 70's, mostly post Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail,

Better than Sex (Volumen 3) about the 90's, and his final release before his untimely death,

Hey Rube (about the early 00's).

I should mention here that I'm only in my 20's, and the first administration I ever really paid attention to was the second Clinton term.

Reading this book and the other Gonzo Papers books, along with Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail, gives you a perspective on the past 30 years that is hard to find elsewhere in this context. Since these columns were written as critiques on current events, you get a feel for what was going on in the 70's, late 80's and early 90's. You find that for everything that has changed over the past 30 years, that politics is quite static. Corrupt presidents, sex-scandal plagued politicians, and more.

There's not too much to dislike about this book, assuming you enjoy Hunter's writing style. And it is valuable to those who can't get enough of Hunter's style.

    3 out of 5 stars History Redux.......2006-03-20

This review was originally used to comment on Hunter Thompson's Songs of the Doomed. Since most of the points I made in my review of that book apply here I will let that review stand in here. Obviously each book is formatted differently but whether Thompson was skewering the Nixon era, the Reagan era or the Bush eras the song is the same. And it aint pretty.

Generally the most the trenchant social criticism, commentary and analysis complete with a prescriptive social program ripe for implementation has been done by thinkers and writers who work outside the realm of bourgeois society, notably socialists and other progressive thinkers. Bourgeois society rarely allows itself, in self defense, to be skewered by trenchant criticism from within. This is particularly true when it comes from a known dope fiend, gun freak and all-around lifestyle addict like the late, lamented Dr. Hunter S. Thompson. Nevertheless, although he was far from any thought of a socialist solution and would reject such a designation we could travel part of the way with him. We saw him as a kindred spirit. He was not one of us- but he was one of us. All honor to him for pushing the envelope of journalism in new directions and for his pinpricks at the hypocrisy of bourgeois society. Such men are dangerous.

I am not sure whether at the end of the day Hunter Thompson saw himself or wanted to been seen as a voice, or the voice, of his generation but in any case he would not be an unworthy candidate. In any case, his was not the voice of the generation of 1968 being just enough older to have been formed by an earlier, less forgiving milieu. His earlier writings show that effect. Nevertheless, only a few, and with time it seems fewer in each generation, allow themselves to search for some kind of truth even if they cannot go the whole distance. This compilation under review is a hodgepodge of articles over the best part of Thompson's career. As with all journalists, as indeed with all writers especially those who are writing under the pressure of timelines and for mass circulation media these works show an uneven quality. However the total effect is to blast old bourgeois society almost to its foundations. Others will have to push on further.

One should note that `gonzo' journalism is quite compatible with socialist materialism. That is, the writer is not precluded from interpreting the events described within himself/herself as an actor in the story. The worst swindle in journalism, fostered by the formal journalism schools, as well as in other disciplines like history and political science is that somehow one must be `objective'. Reality is better served if the writer puts his/her analysis correctly and then gets out of the way. In his best work that was Hunter's way.

As a member of the generation of 1968 I would note that this was a period of particular importance which won Hunter his spurs as a journalist. Hunter, like many of us, cut his political teeth on one Richard Milhous Nixon, at one time President of the United States and all- around political chameleon. Thompson went way out of his way, and with pleasure, skewering that man when he was riding high. Thompson was moreover just as happy to kick him when he was down, just for good measure. Nixon represented the `dark side' of the American spirit- the side that appears today as the bully boy of the world and as craven brute. If for nothing else Brother Thompson deserves a place in the pantheon of journalistic heroes for this exercise in elementary hygiene. Anyone who wants to rehabilitate THAT man before history please consult Thompson's work. Hunter, I hope you find the Brown Buffalo wherever you are. Read this book. Read all his books.

1 out of 5 stars His Worst Collection of Tripe.......2005-08-29

This collection of 100 or so newspaper columns is probably the worst material I have read of Thompson's. First of all, it starts OK, but then turns into a liberal rant for the last half of the book. In almost all cases, Thompson's wild and repeated predictions about the fall of Republicans never come to pass. In fact, not one of them came true.

It is a shame that a man with such insidious ability to write from the gut would allow himself to slide into the dark, slimy Left side of politics, all the while failing to report-much less admit-that the Left was as much if not more corrupt than the Right.

I would pass this tome of incoherent bloviating. His other works are far superior to this wasted cache of paper.

5 out of 5 stars Take this in small doses.......2005-08-02

What we have here are over 100 op-ed pieces (about 2 1/2 book pages each) that ran in the San Francisco Examiner over a three-year period, December 1985 thru November 1988 and are now compiled in Gonzo Papers Volume 2 (Volume 1 was The Great Shark Hunt). These were originally meant to be read at the rate of one a week, but of course you can increase your speed on this compilation. However, I read them in a handful of sittings and suffered from severe overload. First of all, at this fast rate you get a good deal of duplication that waters down the overall affect Thompson was trying to create in his weekly column. Thompson reminds me of the famous Groucho Marx line: "Whatever it is, he's against it!" Just picked at random: "Any baboon with a healthy heart and good diction... could do Neil Frank's job (director of the National Hurricane Center). President Reagan: "...seems to be dumber than three mules." Frank Sinatra: "...is said to be smart, but he was fired and cut off from every casino in New Jersey when he tried to play blackjack by rules he learned in Nevada...They chased him out like a wino. It was an ugly thing to see." And these quotes all come from just one article. Pick a name or event from the headlines of these three years and you'll find a bombastic opinion from Thompson aimed directly at it. It is a fun and funny read. You'll find yourself thinking and speaking in the Thompson style. It's addictive. But, too much at one time can put you over the top. For more reasons than one, this would make for good bathroom reading material.

4 out of 5 stars Hunter rants on 80s Sports, Gambling and Politics.......2005-05-01

The 80s must have been a tough decade for Hunter S. Thompson, and the writing shows it. Easy access to drugs, as well as a rising tide of Republicanism and Conservatism to rail again. On the the surface, this would make for great writing. In reality, this is not his strongest work. Great columns, as well as some of his legendary lucid lines, are interspersed with nominally coherent rants against the political powers that be. Perhaps that is to be expected from him in an anthology of his newspaper writings.

This is an important read for those very in tune to his genre. Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas is a better start if you haven't read anything of his before. It will also provide better context to his mindset in the 80s.

5 out of 5 stars Rave Review for "Life on a Pig Farm".......2002-01-12

This is the first in a wonderful series of books by Judy Wolfman and David Lorenz Winston, giving an educational and entertaining documentation of farm life. Perfect for the elementary school child. The descriptions are accurate, scientific and mature, but in clear language that children can readily understand. The photos tie in perfectly with the text, and together present the full story of the life cycle of the animal, and show the love and care given by the children who live on the farm. My seven year old grandson thoroughly enjoys these books, and has taken them to school to share with his teacher and classmates.

I bought this for my grandchildren and read it for myself! It is well written and tells a story a child can understand. It answers all the questions that young children tend to ask about pigs, living on a farm, etc. Love it and can hardly wait to give it to my grandaughters!

I was born and raised in a rural area but my grandchildren live in a suburban area. I was glad to find a book which gives them such a good explanation of how pigs are raised, and how time-consuming the work is.

This book is absolutely delightful! Few of us are aware how rich and varied our farm yard animal's history is. This is a great book for adults and kids alike. It is full of facts and also has small fun tidbits of "useless" (if there is such a thing)information that tickles your funny bone.

    5 out of 5 stars Oink!!.......2003-04-07

This is a book that goes hog-wild with descriptions of twenty-four varieties of domesticated pig and thirteen of their wild relatives. It is larded with many interesting and important facts about the development of today's common breeds. Although the author does ham it up with some of his observations, he has succeeded in fashioning a silk purse out of a sow's ear.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for those who admire the noble pig!.......2001-07-17

This book is delightful...for those of us who are infatuated with these bristly critters, it gives all the loose-end info that the other books don't. From tail-curling descriptions to grunt analysis, this book brings home the bacon. It included pig folk sayings, poems, pig songs, pig superstitions.. and the piggy illustrations were extremely detailed and captivating, if you adore porkers! It's a fun book to page through, and is chock full of obscure piggy facts that you would never find anywhere else, such as pig trails of past times, or the four varieties of spam. I am sure that any pig lover would be perusing through it as fast as I did.

5 out of 5 stars Chant de Coeur.......2003-03-15

Back when I had my pet pig, Charlotte, I read through this book cover to cover, and found it immensely helpful. Van Loon doesn't treat pigs as merely something you raise for meat, although he covers the aspects of commercial use. He looks at them as social special animals in their own right. He discusses the wild pigs, the history of the pig, their behavior, and how to raise them with care. There are great pictures of Chinese Pigs and innovative ways to feed and house them. The one drawback is his regrettable refusal to believe in the high intelligence of pigs. We raise them for food, but they are the most intelligent domesticated animals, and generally considered the 3rd most intelligent group of animals (after Primata and Cetacea). But what other book is out there that teaches the language of pigs and the words they use, including how to accurately use the pig mating call, which sounds like the French "Song of Love"- "chant de coeur"? This is a book to make one fall in love with the pig, expressing to them, as I often did to Charlotte, "Chant de coeur".

5 out of 5 stars A must for pig ownership........2002-03-05

Today most children and some adults believe pork comes from the grocery store. Van Loon starts with the history of swine to give the reader an understanding of the animal from the ground up. I wasn't sure if I could or wanted to raise pigs, so I bought the book. By the time I finished it I couldn't wait to go get some. Nutrition is so important to raising your own meat, and Van Loon spends a lot of time describing what the impact of certain foods are on the end-product. This helped me make the descisions on what our own pigs would eat. When we took our first pig to the processing plant, they were very impressed by the quality of the meat and we were impressed by the flavor. When we took the second one, it somehow,(150 lbs of pork),was 'mis-placed'- I never got it, hmmm....I think the book was mostly to blame.

5 out of 5 stars Very helpful and informative book. Taught us some pointers........1999-11-09

This book has a lot of helpful information and illustrations. We had our first litter with the help of this book! I'm sure glad I had it to reference when I needed it. A great investment for anyone starting to raise pigs.

The edition in question provides excellent tables on nutritional requirements for all classes of swine and also provides some of the best tables available that describe the nutritional composition and quality of common feedstuffs used in swine feeds. A word of advice, however; it would be well advised for a person interested in this title to have at least a background in the nutrition of pigs. If the reader does not, then the information contained within will read much like Gray's Anatomy.

5 out of 5 stars ...Liberty and Justice, For ALL!.......2007-09-21

In my humble opinion, THIS IS THE BEST CAPTAIN AMERICA SAGA, EVER! Jack Kirby and Captain America triumph over the forces that threaten us and on this occasion, Cap is confronted by Science run amok! The story starts in the jungles of Central America then seques into a fantasic adventure that would make the more squeamish individual cringe in terror!

On the shores of the "River of Death", Cap battles the forces of "The Swine"--Hector Santiago, a brutal prison commander who loves torturing the inmates. Cap smashes through Santiago's men; wins the heart of The Swine's cousin, the voluptuous Donna Maria, only to stumble upon the secret of SHIELD's "File 116"-- loathsome monsters created by Arnim Zola, a modern-day "Frankenstein" who is an agent of the Red Skull!

There are two entertaining (if forgettable) "buffer" stories that involve a space-vampire and an assassin called the Night Flyer, but Cap soon gets back to business by taking on Magneto, the Mutant Master of Magnetism! Just for fun and torture, Magneto brought along a new cadre of his Brotherhood of Evil Mutants! Cap is at his best as he fights for the freedom of two alien mutants who only want to return home...

Jack Kirby is at the height of his story-telling skills, here! His Expressionistic drawing style is still top notch but what is impressive is the vast improvement in the writing. The snappy dialogue is forceful and earnest, while the prose moves the reader through the stories without relying on insipid melodrama. The action is at the frenzied pace of which Kirby's fans are familiar, but what may surprise some people, is the delicate hand that Kirby exhibits in the quiet moments; especially when the characters are male and female, however, this is not a shock to those who remember that Jack co-created (with Joe Simon) the first "romance" comic!

Jack Kirby didn't need no stinkin' Cosmic Cubes, Batrocs or Lady Hydra's in this volume, just good ol' fashioned storytelling! A wild and entertaining read! Now, THAT'S HOT!

4 out of 5 stars Some good stuff from The King!.......2006-12-10

The trade paperback CAPTAIN AMERICA AND THE FALCON BY JACK KIRBY VOLUME 3: THE SWINE collects Captain America #206 - 214 and Annuals #3 & 4. These were Kirby's final issues as writer/artist on the series, and they are certainly his best. Where VOLUME 1: MADBOMB and VOLUME 2: BICENTENNIAL BATTLES were full of random oddities and mediocre stories, the stories collected in THE SWINE are actually very straightforward, exciting, and well-written (at least, in comparison to other work Kirby was producing at the time). These tales really deliver a punch.

This book starts off with Cap and the Falcon returning after the events in volume 2. Falcon shows his tender side when reunited with his sweet sweet love, Leila - never has Kirby's penchant for pseudo-jive been on better display than here. Steve Rogers has an uncomfortable reunion with an old flame, ex-SHIELD agent Sharon Carter, before being kidnapped to Central America to become a slave of The Swine. This eventually leads to encounters with Arnim Zola, the Red Skull, and Nazi-X, plus the Night Flyer, The Captive, Mister 1 and Mister 2, Magneto, and a new version of the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. All of Kirby's storytelling and artistic strengths are on display here, plus a few of his weaknesses, but the bad parts are minor. He really ups the bar on this final collection, and whether serious or fun, the stories are winners. The Magneto story was an especially fun way to end the book, as Kirby returns to one of his classic villains and plays him for a sap. He's definitely not as all-powerful as today's comics make him out to be, and seeing Magneto have his bucket of a helmet crushed around his head is a scene I'll never forget! Ah, for the days when Marvel didn't take itself so seriously... Anyway, the only truly unfortunate part of this book was the retail price. Good night, is there no limit to what Marvel will charge for their trades? Best to buy this one from Amazon and take advantage of the substantial discount.
