Book Description
A professional book for chemical and pesticide applications in turf and landscapes. The book will start with a history of chemical and pesticide use in this industry and follow the technological progression that has occurred through the 20th century to the present.
The book covers the basic principles and properties of chemicals and pesticides as well as the interpretation of the often detailed technical information that accompanies this material.
Practical discussions of the three primary pesticide groups, herbicides, fungicides, and insecticides, will be supplemented with a chapter on additional chemicals used in the industry. The body of the text will be summed up through detailed but practical discussions of proper application strategies and strategies for responsible chemical use and pest management.
Turfgrass Chemicals and Pesticides will offer both sufficient background for the reader to understand the basis for using chemicals and pesticides in turf and landscape and the relevant detail needed to execute the application from start to finish. The book will also provide the rationale for and the information needed to develop pest control and chemical management strategies for immediate use in the turf and landscape industry.
A great resource for professionals in lawn care and maintenance; for golf course superintendents; or professional landscape designers.
Customer Reviews:

Wait a minute!.......2006-09-17
The Schaum Outline Series has stood the test of time and Thermodynamics by Abbott and Van Ness is no exception. If you want to learn thermo beyond the typical undergraduate level, progressively working through the problems chapter-by-chapter in this book will do the trick.
Although this book does follow the old sign convention for work (positive when the system does work on the environment), it properly follows the specific energy convention of "energy/mass". Thus, the ideal gas equation is PV = RT, where V has units of "volume/mass". Once this simple terminology is understood, steam tables can be readily used without confusion.
Foolish Dimensional Inconsistencies Right From The Start........2004-08-13
This outline, like that of Clyde R. Metz (Physical Chemistry) is defective in its presentation of the very first fundamental quantities of thermodynamics, Enthalpy (H) and Internal Energy (U). I find it hard to believe that the authors of these supplements can't seem to understand that (1) PV has units of ENERGY, *not* units of energy/mol*K, (2) H and U (and their associated changes) would PERFORCE have to have units of energy also, since H = U + PV, and (3) using "molar volume" without explicitly defining it as V/n while using the SAME symbol as "ordinary" volume without telling the reader is nothing more than pedagogical carelessnes...or possibly stupidity. Abbot and Van Ness aren't doing anyone any favors by doing silly things like blithely declaring the Ideal Gas Law to be PV = RT, which automatically gives the student pause wondering if it's a typo. Having foolishly bought both Metz' "Physical Chemistry" and Abbot & Van Ness' "Thermodynamics With Chemical Applications", I'm here to warn anyone else contemplating similar purchases: DON'T DO IT, UNLESS YOU LIKE BEING CONFUSED. These authors are apparently too "advanced" and "learned" to bother with such petty details of presentation, and unless you learned your elementary thermo on some other planet where they don't use n (or always use molar quantities,) you're going to be scratching your head wondering where n went, or where n suddenly came from in their example problems. How such supposed experts could be so sloppy on small but important details like these is beyond me.
Outdated convention for the sign of work.......2003-02-26
Unfortunately the authors are still using a sign convention for work which has been outdated for years. This can only confuse students.
Book Description
This book aims to introduce the reader to the design, development, and evaluation processes of new Green Chemistry methodologies. A comprehensive introductory text, it takes a broad view of the subject and integrates a wide variety of topics.
Customer Reviews:
Seminal Work: The Principles of Green Chemistry.......2003-11-19
This is the seminal reference on the widely invoked "12 Principles of Green Chemistry." This book is written by cofounders of the EPA Presidential Green Chemistry Challenge Award,": a Synthetic Chemist and an expert in Environmental Policy. This book is unique in delivering a broad purview of industry practices as it pertains to the environment in a succinct manner. This is enabled by the distillation of the "12 Principles" which is an excellent organizing scheme. A key finding is the interdependency of the Principles and how they drive improved business performance for adopters.
"The 12 Principles of Green Chemistry" is invoked as a mantra for a revolution in the practice and methodologies of synthetic chemistry by research centers and innovators throughout the world. Driving even a few of these principles into practice has become a furtive source of product and process innovations in the field. The text is often cited in technical papers and thus a key reference book.
The narrative is accessible while providing rich examples ripe for follow-up investigation by technical readers.
As a technology strategist I highly recommend "Green Chemistry: Theory and Practice" for its insight regarding the drivers of the future development of the chemical and materials industries.

Book Description
Sustainable development is now accepted as a necessary goal for achieving societal, economic and environmental objectives. Within this chemistry has a vital role to play. The chemical industry is successful but traditionally success has come at a heavy cost to the environment. The challenge for chemists and others is to develop new products, processes and services that achieve societal, economic and environmental benefits. This requires an approach that reduces the materials and energy intensity of chemical processes and products; minimises the dispersion of harmful chemicals in the environment; maximises the use of renewable resources and extends the durability and recyclability of products in a way that increases industrial competitiveness as well as improve its tarnished image.

Customer Reviews:
The Best Practical Guide to Process Control.......2006-07-09
This book is an excellent reference on Process Control Principles for any engineer or practitioneer working in the fluid process industries. Most of the examples in the book are taken from the chemical process industries, which makes this text an ideal tool for the chemical engineering student looking to close the gap between their academic eduction and the demands of their future assigments in process plants.
Greg Shinskey is considered the foremost authority on Process Control. I specially like the emphasis that the author puts on teaching how to solve common control problems. There is a complete chapter dedicated to the dynamics characteristics of the most common control loops as well as four full chapters dedicated to process control applications.
Even though the book is designed for Chemical Engineers, this text would also be suitable for mechanical, industrial, and electrical engineers. I am an Industrial Practitioner of Process Measurement & Control who has been working in the Process Industries for more than 16 years as an Automation, Instrumentation, Process Safety and Process Control Engineer. My academic background is in electrical and electronics engineering (I am an Electronic Engineer), not in chemical engineering as might be the case of the usual reader of this book, but working in the Oil & Gas Industry all this time, I have been dealing with Chemical-Process Control issues in a day-to-day basics. I found this book to be a very useful reference and refresher to gain a better understanding Process Control Applications, and also an ideal self-study guide.
This is a great book for anyone interested or involved in the application, design and tuning of Process Control loops.
A classic in this subject.......2001-08-10
The book is quite common on instrumentation engineers' desk but I recommend it also to chemical engineers involved in Startup of chemical plants and to engineers dealing with the design of continuous plants.
Difficult to Use, But, Very Enlightening.......1998-05-23
I met Dr. Shinskey once through a seminar sponsored by a college classmate. His ready explanations made me want to read his book. I tried. I struggled through the first 200 pages and gave up. Since then, I often referred back to it and find it enlightening in solving difficult control problems. However, I cannot use his solutions directly because the examples are difficult to follow. Equations are all very nice but should relate to physical data in some way. Starting with instrument measurement and leading to the practical solution is how authors such as Dr. Levenspiel of Oregon explain difficult problems. That, is how I would improve this text. As for the problems in each chapter, forget it. The information provided was confusing; I seldom found the right answer even after reviewing his solution. I suggest a solution book with the book itself. The problems drove me nuts.

Book Description
Industrial Uses of Biomass Energy demonstrates that energy-rich vegetation, biomass, is a key renewable energy resource for the future. Brazil, uniquely, has a recent history of large-scale biomass industrial uses that makes it a specially important test-bed both for the development of biomass technology and its utilisation, and for understanding how this is shaped by political and socio-economic forces. The book analyses the cause for this and the alternatives. It is argued that Brazil's experience with the development for industrial biomass use provides wider lessons and insights in the context of the international movement for sustainable economic development. This book is an interdisciplinary, multi-author work, based upon a recently completed international study by Brazilian and British experts and will prove a valuable reference to all those working in this field.
