Book Description
This comprehensive handbook, acclaimed when it was first published in 1976 as "one of the most useful reference manuals on diagnostic entomology yet produced," has now been completely revised and expanded to reflect recent advances in technology and the wealth of new information affecting the "Green Industry."
Augmented by 241 full-color plates, it gives the essential facts about more than 900 species of insects, mites, and other animals that injure woody ornamental plants in the United States and Canada, and provides means of quick visual identification of both the pests and the damage they cause.
Customer Reviews:
Well worth it!.......2002-08-14
This book is on my "short list" of essential references. Species are covered in clear, concise descriptions. This well organized volume makes hunting for similar species as easy as turning a page. The photos? I can't say enough about the clear, photos that make insect identification a good deal easier!
While an excellent book for the landscape professional, scientist, or advanced gardener, beginners might be a bit overwhelmed by the technical language and scientific names.
This is a much needed and fabulous manual........1998-06-18
When trying to identify a particular problem with growing trees or shrubs knowing what kinds of insects are possible culprits is a major step. This book gives us, in color photos and descriptions, most of the common larvae that can be found feeding on the particular plants. Even Entomology texts often refuse to deal with larvae of insects, keeping only the adults in the keys and descriptions (even though the adults are often not pests!). This guide will be a welcome addition to any plant clinic, grower, or Entomology professor or student's bookshelf.

Book Description
Praised by The New York Times as "an indispensable guide for the homeowner and the professional," Tree Maintenance has been the definitive source on maintenance of North American landscape trees for over fifty years, an essential reference not only for arborists, nurserymen, and landscape architects, but for all homeowners who want to keep their trees healthy and pest free. The Seventh Edition, now named in honor of Dr. P. P. Pirone, who authored the first five editions and co-authored the sixth, has been revised to reflect the enormous amount of new information available since the last edition, including the latest techniques in selecting, planting, and protecting trees. The authors explain how to evaluate the site (the soil, drainage, and exposure), how to select the right tree for that location, and how to prune, fertilize, and spray for pests. There is an extensive section on the diagnosis and control of tree pests and diseases, and on problems such as construction damage, gas injury, sunscald, leaf scorch, and air pollution. While the general structure of the sixth edition has been retained, there are several topics--notably hazardous trees and coping with tree pests and diseases--that have received greater attention than in previous versions of the book. The second half of the book comprises a systematic listing of the major landscape trees found in North America, describing the specific pests and diseases that attack each species. Well organized, clearly written, and beautifully illustrated with many new photographs, Pirone's Tree Maintenance is an encyclopedic resource, the first place to turn for information on dogwoods and elms, magnolias and redwoods, or any other tree growing in North America. Anyone serious about gardening will want this book on their shelf.
Customer Reviews:
Worth every penny for arborists and homeowners alike.......2006-06-01
Printed by Oxford University Press, Pirone's Tree Maintenance has the heft and durability to withstand countless consultations. The text is informative beyond measure and very readable. The photography is black-and-white and didn't reproduce all that well, especially for small and detailed items; photos range from 'Fig. 7-15. Brush chipper and dump truck' (oh please...) to a hollowed-out, decayed Silver Maple resting comfortably on what appears to be a four-bedroom Dutch Colonial (illustrating the section on Identifying Hazard Trees). Good section on insects and diseases (with the caveat that the photos aren't that great); excellent tree-specific section. You will learn a lot from this book--it's a must if you want to rely on another source besides the local tree guy with a chainsaw.
Another book on my Horticulture Short List.......2005-08-30
Pirone's Tree Maintenance (Seventh Edition) is one of about a half dozen books I keep within arms reach. While Parts I and II provide a fantastic amount of information on the care of trees and identifying problem, it is Part III that I use the most. This section lists common insects, diseases, and problems associated with specific tree species. While by no means comprehensive, it is an excellent place to start when trying to figure out what is going on with a tree.
Like any such book, be careful when looking at the pesticide recomendations. Chemicals come and go and the labels change (and the authors remind you of that). There are several products that are off the market that are listed in this book.
Practical introduction for the novice arborist.......2000-05-25
This classic text gives a broad introduction to the field of tree management, including common health problems associated with trees and practical advice for solving them. It is an excellent primer for the novice arborist.

Ball RedBook, Volume 2: Crop Production: 17th edition (Ball Red Book)
ASIN: 1883052130 |
Book Description
Discusses diagnosis and treatment of diseases and organisms afflicting nearly 500 genera of ornamental plants grown outdoors, under glass, or in the home. Explains when and how to use the most effective fungicides, insecticides, and other control materials and practices. The fifth edition of the official publication of the New York Botanical Garden identifies new diseases, recognizes the spread of many known diseases to a wider range of host plants, and reflects up-to-date control methods. New illustrations have been added and there are expanded discussions on fungicides, bactericides, and miticides.
Customer Reviews:
Dated, but valuable resource.......2005-11-15
Look up your plant and read through a whole list of common insect and disease problems for that species. It's that simple. The descriptions are concise and most of the major plant species and their problems are covered.
A stong word of caution about this book. Pesticides come and go and the lables change. Since this book was published (1979), most of the chemicals recomended in it have gone off label and are no longer available. Check with your local Extension office for current control recomendations. Aside from that, this is still an excellent place to start for pest identification.
Book Description
A practical guide for growing healthy trees.
As the most dominant and permanent feature in any garden, trees establish a landscape's character more than any other plant. A well-chosen tree in the right location adds color, form, and dimension.
Moreover, trees can filter the air of pollutants, muffle noise, screen the sun, calm the wind, attract birds, reduce soil erosion, raise the water table, and increase property values. Knowing which varieties to grow and how to maintain them is a must for anyone who owns trees or is considering planting one.
The Tree Doctor is a comprehensive manual for tree selection, care, and maintenance. The authors cover the options to consider before buying and what to look for when making your selection.
Other topics include: tree placement; choosing a healthy tree from a nursery; proven urban varieties; detailed planting, pruning, and watering instructions; protecting trees from pests, disease, and weather; diagnosing problems; identifying hazardous trees; and how to hire qualified experts when needed.
The Tree Doctor is an easy-to-understand guide for growing healthy trees that will benefit generations to come.

An Encyclopedia of Cultivated Palms
ASIN: 0890543143 |
Book Description
The Compendium of Ornamental Palm Diseases and Disorders provides current information on diseases and disorders affecting palms during nursery production and later in the landscape. With the help of 237 color images, detailed descriptions, and treatment methods, readers will learn to visually identify and treat diseases and disorders that affect the health and beauty of these important ornamental plants.
Palms lose their beauty, and sometimes die, for numerous reasons - not all caused by diseases. The goal of this work is to help readers separate, for example, leaf spots caused by a disease vs. leaf spots caused by a nutritional deficiency; death caused by a bud rot vs. death caused by lightning; or leaf shredding caused by a disease vs. leaf shredding caused by wind. The ability to determine the cause is critical to selecting successful control measures, which can vastly vary.
New to the Compendium of Plant Disease Series, this is a thorough revision of a bestselling palm disease guide first published in 1991 by APS PRESS. This ambitious new treatment of an economically important host is presented in the popular APS Compendium format with new high quality photographs, up-to-date diagnostic and treatment information, and references provided for each topic. An introduction on palm morphology and biology are added in addition to new diseases and enhanced detail. Readers will find data on distribution of pathogens within the United States and worldwide, descriptions of laboratory techniques including information on pathogen isolation and maintenance techniques, a list of potential hosts for each pathogen, and step-by-step treatment methods for diseases and disorders.
This book is applicable to any geographic location where palms are grown, whether indoors or outdoors, and will be valuable for a wide range of readers, including nursery growers, extension professionals, plant pathologists, horticulturists, landscape professionals, diagnosticians, arborists, landscape consultants, landscape architects, botanical garden professionals, palm researchers, and palm hobbyists.
Customer Reviews:

The section on "Physiological Disorders" is similarly laid out and covers everything from Albinism, Cold Injury, Herbicide Toxicity, and Lightning Injury, to Potassium Deficiency; Powerline Decline; Root Suffocation; Water Stress; and more. An exceptional and strongly recommended addition to professional and academic gardening and horticultural reference library collections, Compendium Of Orna-mental Palm Diseases And Disorders is enhanced with thirteen appendices including "Common names of some palm taxa".
Book Description
This comprehensive account of the genus covers every aspect of cultivation and has information about growing lilies in all parts of the world, illustrated extensively with line artwork and color photographs.
Customer Reviews:
quite interesting.......2007-02-20
I would recommnend this title, there are a lot of pictures, and therefore a bit less written information, but on the whole I think this book is worth buying.
Very good.......2003-07-28
This book is a very good resource for everybody who wants to get informed about lilies in general. It's biggest advantage is it's very accessible language, even beginners won't have a problem to understand. It covers all important topics and is richly illustrated, though it sometimes suffers a bit of the "coffee-tablebook-syndrome".
It is a perfect work for beginners and advanced hobbyists who want to be well informed, but don't intend to use much too advanced techniques. For those it is quite usable and a very valuable source of information. Only experienced collectors and professionals might sometimes feel a bit unsatisfied.
Book Description
Ornamental trees, shrubs, and flowers are an important component of modern life, from houseplants to trees in public parks. This authoritative and beautifully illustrated account provides a unique source of reference for all practitioners involved in the recognition, biology, and control of the pests of ornamental crops. The author recommends appropriate control measures, including the environmentally conscious methods of handpicking insects, eliminating insect hiding places, and using certain pesticide and chemical controls. Entomologists, horticulturists, pest control specialists, integrated pest management (IPM) practitioners, growers, students, and teachers will all find this to be a thorough and comprehensive text.
