Junie B., First Grader: Dumb Bunny (A Stepping Stone Book(TM))

I love all of Barbara Parks books about Junie B. Jones. I think they should make a movie of this book. I think this is the funniest of all the Junie B.books. If you have a little girl who loves to read or be read to, I cannot recommend all of the Junie B. books enough.

Would make a great addition to any Easter basket! This book is a little better than cheater pants!

5 out of 5 stars Yes to Junie B........2007-07-24

My daughter has the whole collection she love keeping up with Junie B. I have not read a book in it's entire but from what I've read she is a very curious, funny little girl. I recommend this book and all the others also. My daughter was hooked after the 1st Barbara Parks books and althought she is older now she still cracks up laughing when reading. Totaling entertaining!

5 out of 5 stars A very loquacious first grader with a vocabulary far beyond her age .......2007-06-05

After more than 25 books, Barbara Park's series about a very loquacious first grader with a vocabulary far beyond her age (and the writing ability to go with it) is still going strong. So I suspended my disbelief and read JUNIE B., FIRST GRADER: DUMB BUNNY to my six-year-old.

In this adventure, the rich girl in class, Lucille, invites everyone over to her mansion to participate in an over-the-top Easter Egg Hunt that will result in a play date in Lucille's heated indoor swimming pool. Lucille wants her boyfriend Sheldon to win, but Junie B. and her arch-nemesis May (the original "dumb bunny" in the title until Junie B. gets something of a comeuppance later on) are ready to pounce, pound and scrabble their opponents in order to get a dip in that grand pool.

There is a lot of falling down and Batman-type expletives (WHOOSH! SMASH!), and the kids are none too nice to each other until Junie B., in a sudden acknowledgment of good judgment, makes a quick and well-appreciated sacrifice to save the day. We laughed at some of the pratfalls, and Lucille's annoyed Nanna character was amusing as well. Junie B. shares the stage with a lot of different people, but she is clearly the star of the show, the story told from her point of view.

Whether humiliated in a pink bunny suit or gloating over her lack of selfishness, Junie B. thinks in capital letters with lots of exclamation points and writes in her journal about what she has learned. The journal entries are cute and engaging, and spell out the moral of the story without being too pointed, which we appreciated.

If this is your first Junie B. foray, it might be helpful to go back and read some of the earlier books first to relax into her strange environment. Otherwise, DUMB BUNNY certainly will offer fans of the series more of what they have come to expect from this little girl and her friends.

My daughter love this series. It's a little hard for me to read due to the poor grammar and name calling. Let's face it though most first graders have poor grammar. There are worse things that she could be reading. We have all of these books and they are well loved.

5 out of 5 stars Hilarious tale.......2007-04-14

Barbara Park's JUNIE B. FIRST GRADER: DUMB BUNNY provides another excellent first grader tale: this taking place at Easter and telling of an Easter egg hunt with an unusual prize. But Junie B. gets stuck wearing an impossible costume and a series of mishaps might prevent her from her goals in this hilarious tale for grades 4-6.

This timeless Dr. Seuss classic was first published in 1960, and has been delighting readers ever since. Sam-I-am is as persistent as a telemarketer, changing as many variables as possible in the hopes of convincing the nameless skeptic that green eggs and ham are a delicacy to be savored. He tries every manner of presentation with this "nouveau cuisine"--in a house, with a mouse, in a box, with a fox, with a goat, on a boat--to no avail. Then finally, finally the doubter caves under the tremendous pressure exerted by the tireless Sam-I-am. And guess what? Well, you probably know what happens, but even after reading Green Eggs and Ham the thousandth time, the climactic realization that green eggs and ham are "so good, so good, you see" is still a rush. As usual, kids will love Dr. Seuss's wacky rhymes and whimsical illustrations--and this time, they might even be so moved as to finally take a taste of their broccoli. (Ages 4 to 8)

5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2007-10-07

A great book. Perhaps it's a little repetitive for those of us who have read it 15 times to our children, but at its heart this is an uplifting, joyful book. Try it - you'll like it!

1 out of 5 stars I shudder at the message this story sends to our children........2007-09-09

If you're searching for a literary example of peer pressure, look no further than Dr. Seuss's subtly horrifying "Green Eggs and Ham." The "hero" of this tale, Sam-I-Am, spends the entirety of the book trying to force green eggs and ham upon a nameless skeptic. The "villain" turns down the offer several times, but Sam-I-Am persists, going so far as to follow him home in order to make him try the green eggs and ham. He uses several textbook methods of peer pressure, including the famous, "You'll never know that you don't like it if you don't try it." He refuses to respect the man's right to say no, and badgers him incessantly until he caves under the pressure.

What disgusts me most about the end of the story is that once the man tries the green eggs and ham, he loves them and is simply another addition to a pool of addicts. Dr. Seuss's tragic allegory for the rising drug use among young people that plagued his time period is brilliant, but certainly not appropriate for young children. Sam-I-Am is too easily twisted to become a hero, opening the antagonist's mind to new things, rather than a metaphor for Satan as I believe was originally intended.

In conclusion, do not read this book to your children unless you are willing to explain to them that people like Sam-I-Am should be avoided at all costs, and that they should never follow the path of the story's antagonist.

4 out of 5 stars Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03

Dr Seuss is most definitely responsible for putting a lot of people off their dinner, and also for encouraging the experimentation with food coloring in a whole range of normal foodstuffs that probably did not need spectrum alteration in the first place.

What a devious, sneaky and subversive publication.

5 out of 5 stars Green Eggs and Ham.......2007-07-16

This book is great for all ages. This book is great for children who are just learning to read and who need help with rhyming. The book is small enough that a child can hold it themselves and don't have to worry about harming the book or dropping it.

5 out of 5 stars Green eggs and ham ??? In one word, how---absurd !!! SMILES.......2007-07-12

The children's book entitled Green Eggs and Ham by Dr. Seuss does a great job of teaching young kids to try new things while increasing their vocabulary. The illustrations are very nicely done with hybrid "things" replacing people. These "things" are part human and part "thing"--great concept to stimulate a child's imagination! The text is written in easy to understand words so that with a little help your child be able to read this book independently soon.

The book tells a cute story of how a smaller "thing" or, "person named Sam" follows a "grown up thing" or, "person who is not Sam" around, beseeching them to try some food they've never eaten before, namely green eggs and ham. Happily, the food turns out to be delicious in the end. While the basic moral of the story is not to be afraid of trying new things; the child learns a lot of vocabulary and comparisons at the same time. Great!

Specifically, children learn the concepts of "here," "there" and "anywhere;" "like" versus "do not like;" and modes of transportation including "car" and "train." Excellent!

The book is nicely bound and the strength of the hardcover binding makes the book tolerate the bending and occasional carelessness of a young child who is learning to read partly by using this book. Great!

I highly recommend Green Eggs and Ham for younger kids who are just learning to read. This book will increase their vocabulary by introducing words, comparisons and pictures. The child gets encouragement to try new things; and the adorable illustrations will delight children everywhere.

Great job, Dr. Seuss!

The resurrection eggs were a great hit with my nephews and niece and their mom. Alyssa used them to teach about the real meaning of Easter and they still enjoy using them. Thank you selling them!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Christian teaching tool for children.......2007-05-12

I purchased the Resurrection Eggs after reading a review about them on a friend's blog. They are a great tool for teaching children about Easter and its true meaning. The eggs contain small props that help you explain the story of Easter from Christ's crucifixion to His resurrection.
The story booklet enclosed is a nice guideline for younger children and can be read for old children (the stories are not short).
I think this is one of the best Easter traditions you can share with your children and family. I highly recommend it.

4 out of 5 stars Great tool for a family to share the Easter Story.......2007-04-10

We have really enjoyed using the Resurrectoin Eggs to share the Easter story with our children. This new box is more study than the last version and the items in the eggs are helpful in sharing the story. We also use it at our Easter party - passing our all the eggs and then one by one opening each egg and telling the story. We recommened it for your growing family - under 12's will enjoy it most.

5 out of 5 stars A family Easter tradition in the making.......2007-02-24

Ressurection Eggs is a fantastic teaching tool and a fun family tradition. 12 eggs in a box each contain a part of the Easter story. It's a tactile experience, with ample Scripture reference, and details to aid you in setting the stage for understanding.

5 out of 5 stars Wow! What a Way to Teach My Child.......2004-04-17

My son is four this year and we were trying to find a way to tell him the Easter story and actually help him understand the true meaning of Easter. He listened but he didn't "get" it. There was no look of absolute comprehension.

So when we were shopping the day before Easter and Grandma said she was getting these, I got a little excited. Would these work and maybe bring the meaning a little more home?

We sat down and did the eggs and sometimes he seemed more exited to play with them then hear the story I was telling. However, he took the eggs to church Easter morning to show our pastor and sat down and told him what every item meant. Today, it's a week after Easter and he's yet to tire of playing with the eggs and telling their story to everyone he can get to listen.

Including cute little things , such as dice and cloth, the children not only get a visual aid of the story but through that aid, they can remember much of that story for retelling. Any church, Sunday School, or parent with younger children can make use of this useful resource.

"An outstanding book. . . . Meets the needs of those in-between or curious kids who are not ready, developmentally or emotionally, for IT'S PERFECTLY NORMAL." — BOOKLIST (starred review)

How does a baby begin? What makes a baby male or female? How is a baby born? Children have plenty of questions about reproduction and babies — and about sex and sexuality, too. IT'S SO AMAZING! provides the answers — with fun, accurate, comic-book-style artwork and a clear, lively text that reflects elementary-school children's interest in how things work, while giving them a healthy understanding of their bodies. Created by the author and illustrator of IT'S PERFECTLY NORMAL, this forthright and funny book — newly updated for its fifth anniversary — covers similar territory but with an eye toward younger children's concerns.

5 out of 5 stars Very detailed, great at explaining things in a way that is not embarrasing to child or adult!.......2007-09-30

I bought this for my 6.5yr old who is about to become a big sister. She is in 1st grade, but reads (and thinks) at a much higher level. We read it together so that along the way she could ask questions and we could discuss things. This book was great at breaking down the human reproductive system in a way she could understand. That said, I would not recommend it for a child under 10 UNLESS they are highly gifted and interested in human reproduction. I was not thrilled with the portions that discussed homosexuality, but I realized that this is something that she will eventually be exposed to, and reading this book together gave me the opportunity to answer questions about it before it came up in real life.

Her favorite part was the "actual size" depictions of the embryo and fetus. We had not told her exactly how far along I was, she used our ultrasound picture to determine that I was farther than 2 months, but less than 3, and she was right! The cartoonish pictures throughout the entire book were detailed enough to provide information, but not uncomfortable to look at.

5 out of 5 stars great resourse on intercourse.......2007-09-21

This is a great book, My 71/2 yr old loves it. It answered questions I didn't even know she had or was ready to know but she asked and we together used this book to answer in a way she understood. She was very happy with this book as am I. Use your own judgment every child is differnt. My daughter says proudly this is her "all about her body book!" the Homosexuality page~ it's a big subject in todays world I see why they put it in. Teach your views or others will teach them theirs. don't know about you but I will love my child either way.

1 out of 5 stars This book is unfortunately pro homosexual.......2007-09-19

Overall, a good informative book, however there is one page that describes homosexual attraction as something natural, just like heterosexuality. This is a dangerous lie that is too prevalent in our culture. It is offensive to God because it perverts his beautiful design and ruins his wonderful gift to each of us. It is not only wrong, but totally inappropriate for any age. The rest of the book is great. Too bad I couldn't tear out that one bad page without eliminating the other side, which was worthwhile. Because of this, I would NOT recommend this book!

2 out of 5 stars A little too much detail for a 10 year old.......2007-06-02

I bought this book along with "It's a Girl Thing" (which is perfect for her age now). I didn't think this book was appropriate for my daughter who is almost 11 -- My husband and I read the book together and agreed that it will have to wait until she gets her period and/or is almost 12. It is a good book though, but not for now! It gets a little too detailed about sex, so we thought that a book that lightly touched upon the subject ("It's a Girl Thing") was perfect for her age now.

5 out of 5 stars This Book IS Amazing!.......2007-05-14

This is a wonderful book; very appropriate for the age group. I teach a sexuality course to 2nd and 3rd graders and have been using this book. It's got great information and the kids love it!

One April morning Thomas and his sister Lucy are gathering eggs from the hens and discussing Easter. But Lucy falls ill with scarlet fever before she gets a chance to tell him about Easter eggs. Thomas is sent to the local candy shop merchants, John and Mary, while his sister is quarantined. One day, when Thomas is lonely and frightened about Lucy, Mary gives him a chocolate Easter egg and tells him the story of Jesus's resurrection.

"But why do we have Easter eggs?" Thomas asked.

Mary explained. "Just as a chick breaks out of an egg, so had Jesus broken free of the tomb of death. Easter eggs remind us that Jesus conquered death and gives us eternal life."

Written by the author/illustrator team of Lori Walburg and James Bernardin, and featuring the same setting and characters from their bestselling The Legend of the Candy Cane, this story reveals the significance of Easter, which lies far beyond the wholesale gobbling of chocolate eggs and jelly beans. (Ages 6 to 9) --Emilie Coulter

Book Description

A young boy learns the meaning of new life when the wife of the owner of the local candy store shares with him the symbolism of the Easter egg, telling the hope-filled story of Christ’s resurrection.

5 out of 5 stars beautiful illustrations.......2007-08-17

This is one of several Easter-themed books our family owns, and it is one we return to again and again no matter what time of year. It contains many of the various elements of Lent/Holy Week, and weaves them into a lovely children's story. The illustrations are outstanding, particularly the one of the angel outside the empty tomb on Easter morning. Currently we have the board book version (which is of course abbreviated) and like it so much that we want to buy the full-length version. I'm confused as to why a previous reviewer gave it only 3 stars but had no criticism of it. It's a 5-star book in my opinion and highly recommended.

3 out of 5 stars Endearing tale of Easter.......2000-03-31

In this historical fiction story about Easter, a young man learns the legend of the Easter egg and about his faith in Jesus.

Thomas asks his sister about the legend of the Easter egg while they do their chores. Unfortunately she doesn't get a chance to answer him before she gets Scarlet Fever. While staying with friends, he asks about Easter eggs. Thomas finds his answer and prays for the first time.

This endearing story is a great way to explain some of the symbols used to celebrate Easter to young children. A great book to add to the other collectable legend stories like The Legend of the Candy Cane.

Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

3 out of 5 stars Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

5 out of 5 stars Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

5 out of 5 stars Very Interesting.......2007-03-07

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

My children, Josh and Amy, loved this book. Congratulations on finding this.

5 out of 5 stars Must have! .......2006-03-21

My mother used to read it to me and now I am reading it to my daugther (she's 2 1/2). It is a family favorite. The story is beautiful, touching, sweet, etc. I love the language/word choice used by the author. I could read it to my daughter every day and not get tired of it. And, the illustrations are exquisite. They are so detailed and beautiful. If you do not own this book, go and buy it. It's worth every penny. You will not be disappointed. They don't make them like this anymore! This is a classic.

4 out of 5 stars My son loves it as much as I did.......2006-02-22

This was one of my favorite books growing up. We got it for my 3 year-old son, and he loves it as much as I do. The question of, "What is inside the egg?" is exciting, even though he now knows the answer. We have fun coming up with new possibilities, though.

Bottom line: this is a great, fun book for a toddler. I highly recommend it. It also is useful for parents trying to encourage a child's imagination.

5 out of 5 stars A true picturebook classic.......2004-07-09

Charmingly written by Margaret Wise Brown and superbly illustrated by Leonard Weisgard, The Gold Egg Book is a true picturebook classic telling the story of the rambling imagination of one little bunny as he tries to figure out just what is inside a beautiful blue egg. A whole new generation of children ages 2 to 5 will delight in this lively story as the bunny tries to shake, push, and even jump on the egg in his attempts to break it. But the egg won't hatch until it is ready! The Golden Egg Book will prove to be an enthusiastically popular addition to family, preschool, and community library collections.

Poor Horton. Dr. Seuss's kindly elephant is persuaded to sit on an egg while its mother, the good-for-nothing bird lazy Maysie, takes a break. Little does Horton know that Maysie is setting off for a permanent vacation in Palm Springs. He waits, and waits, never leaving his precarious branch, even through a freezing winter and a spring that's punctuated by the insults of his friends. ("They taunted. They teased him. They yelled 'How Absurd! Old Horton the Elephant thinks he's a bird!'") Further indignities await, but Horton has the patience of Job--from whose story this one clearly derives--and he is rewarded in the end by the surprise birth of... an elephant-bird. Horton Hatches the Egg contains some of Theodor Geisel's most inspired verse and some of his best-ever illustrations, the dated style of which only accentuates their power and charm. A book no childhood should be without. (Ages 2 to 7) --Richard Farr

Book Description

Illus. in color by the author. It's the talk of the jungle when an elephant hatches an egg. Extravagant nonsense and rollicking verse.

Wonderfully witty with excellent rhythm! I love reading it to my daughter and she loves listening to it.

5 out of 5 stars Yay Horton!.......2007-07-31

Does this book really need another review? Well just in case, it is probably my favorite of all the Seuss books, love the story, a real love story too! While I don't know if I owned this book as a wee person, I do remember reading it and loving it. And while some of the old books don't hold up in today's politically correct world, I don't find too much offense in some of the old (as another reviewer mentioned), e.g., the guns pointed at Horton...I do rush through that part with a sense of drama for my kids. (I can see that they don't like the idea either.) Still, love the rhyming, the cities mentioned, the faithful 100%. Mine are adopted, but I think if the reality of the story really dawned on them, it might be a little painful. For us, it's just good fun reading, with us badmouthing lazy Mayzie and rooting for Horton.

This ws one of my favorites as a kid. A Dr. Seuss book can't go be a bad choice for a children's book. Horton is a loyal friend.

I loved this book as a child and don't know what happened to it ( anyone have a copy of it with my name? Last name was CROW ) but I wanted it again because it was part of my childhood and I wanted to share it now, with my grandchildren.
I loved it. The "baby" was so darn cute!

One of Dr. Seuss's best messages is convened in this book over and over again ~ "I did what I said and I said what I meant. An elephant's faithful one hundred percent." For anyone who ever needed a simple explanation of unconditional love, they need look no further than Horton. For a child Horton is the example of the parent who will be there for them no matter what. It's also one of my personal favorites...

5 out of 5 stars I'm a beginner.......2006-04-29

This is a beautiful book. I bought it so that my children and I could get started in this art form. This book provides beautiful inspiration for the beginner, and has thorough instructions. There wasn't much info on dividing up the egg, but that information is easily found online, and not everyone wants a perfectly symetrical egg....especially children :)

5 out of 5 stars Informative and inspiring.......2006-03-09

I was looking into possibly wanting to take up this craft. But before doing so, I wanted to make sure I conpletely understood the art. This book clearly spelled out step by step and even why it is done so. But the author also gives other options.

This book was also inspiring with all it creative, wonderful pictures. Jane Pollak gives you wonderful ideas to start with and even gives you a focus to find more inspiration.

I just finished the book last night and am ordering a Kistka kit today!

Even if you do not have the patience to create such eggs...this book will give you a better appreciation for those that are able to design such wonderful pieces of art.

5 out of 5 stars enchanting.......2006-02-01

This book is absolutely beautiful! The photographs are lovely, and the instructions are very clear. Even if you don't plan on attempting the craft, the pictures are well worth the price of the book!

5 out of 5 stars excellent resource!.......2004-02-22

I am just beginning with pysanky and this book has been a treasure trove! It begins with a brief history of the art, clear explanations and wonderful photos of the tools of the trade, and moves into very easy-to-follow instructions for making decorated eggs. Throughout, the book is filled with wonderful full-color photos of lovely eggs, sparking the imagination with possibilities. The waxing and dying process is documented clearly with photographs and explained fully in detailed step-by-step instructions for making a simple but stunning beginner's egg. Pollak always gives options, not just her preferred method of doing it, explaining the differences between traditional and modern tools, different ways of removing the wax and blowing the egg, etc. There is an entire chapter on playing with color and the effects of one color on top of another color, followed by a chapter on simple two-color designs. She encourages playing with design and color to see what happens! Next are chapters on traditional Ukrainian designs and symbolism, "quilting" on eggshells using patterns inspired by quilts, where to find inspiration for new and original decoration ideas (fabric, cultural images, modern art, etc), and finally, chapters on creating lovely eggshell jewelry and other nontraditional egg designs and uses (like bowls from ostrich eggs!). I would think this book would be as indispensable on the shelf of an experienced egg decorator as I know it is on my beginner's shelf! The only thing to be aware of is that this is NOT a pattern book. It gives clear instructions on how to do pysanky, step-by-step directions for one pattern, shows various design elements used in traditional Ukrainian eggs, and is filled with inspiring photos of finished eggs, but it does not have the patterns for those eggs. I didn't rate it down for this, because it is not designed to be a pattern book, but the buyer should be aware that it doesn't contain patterns. It is, however, filled with education, inspiration, and encouragement!

5 out of 5 stars Inspirational and Fun!!.......2003-11-27

First let me say that the color photographs throughout this book are simply amazing! I get excited to play around with the techniques just by looking at the pictures and what "could be". I'm a beginner at this but this book has really taken me a long way. There are pictures (in color) demonstrating the different techniques described. Tools are described and shown in pictures so when you go out looking for them you know what it should be. This book is all about using wax and dyes - the Ukranian style eggs. They turn out simply beautiful (ok, so mine look like beginners eggs - I just call them "primitives" :) The instructions in the chapter entitled "Decorating an Egg: From the Beginning" are excellent. Its very step-wise (eg in the sub-section dying the egg....Step 1, step 2 etc)The pictures in this chapter use a simple geometric design with the finished egg shown as well. The following chapters just step it up a notch in each - showing different traditional patterns/designs, "playing with color", and getting really advanced with things like making jewelry and eggs that open. (I'm still hanging out around chapters 1&2 but maybe I'll get to the rest of the ideas at some point.) Great book, great pictures that help with learning, and lots of fun.

My grand daughter is allergic to all dairy products and tree nuts. I did not know what to fix her for meals or desserts. This book really tells me all kinds of food available for anyone who are allergic to above mentioned. It is not difficult to prepare all recipes on this book . I am glad I found this cook book. Thanks to the author.

4 out of 5 stars Very good cookbook for those with food allergies.......2007-05-15

This book has a ton of recipes. I've only tried a few, but they were each very good. My 2 year old son is allergic to eggs, milk and peanuts so this seemed like the perfect cookbook for us. The only problem is that he's at a very picky age right now, so most of these recipes he won't have anything to do with at this time. Some desserts and cookies are all I've made so far that he'll eat. I think as the years go by we'll get a lot more use out of this book.

This cookbook is absolutely fantastic! It's so nice to have a cookbook that suits my daughter's dietary restrictions exactly, without having to substitute this or that. So far, I've tried only a handful of recipes, mostly cakes and cookies, but all were easy to make and delicious! Highly recommended!

This cookbook has made such a difference in my life! I am an allergy mom that was in desperate need to feed my son who has severe egg and peanut allergies. It is so nice to have such a variety of foods, dinner, breakfast, snack, desserts, etc that my sons can enjoy that are completely safe. And totally yummy! This Cookbook is the best out there!
