1 out of 5 stars Everybody loves Max? Not quite........2007-10-07

I bought this book under the impression that it would be entertaining and at least relatively well-written. Unfortunately, I was sorely mistaken. Although younger readers may like Max and her companions, I would advise against the series for anyone over the age of eleven.
Many parts of the book were poorly thought-out, and there were gaping holes when loose ends should have been tied up. For example, there is no explaination of how Max's arm began functioning again, but the chip was gone. And what were Itex's motives for 'torturing the bird-kids,' as Max puts it? I could go on and on, but I would probably be typing for the next few weeks. Lastly, Max seems to have no flaws--she's pretty, strong, smart, and fast. And it's not just Max, none of the characters have any depth at all. The book would probably be about half as short if it weren't for the pointless space-filling details.
All in all, I think that Maximum Ride was a waste of time and trees, not to mention space and gravity. Don't waste your money.

4 out of 5 stars Satisfying thrid instalment.......2007-10-05

It's nice to see that once again, the cast of Maximum Ride is portrayed as young people, rather than just little adults. Even in their not so perfect world, the episode where Max and Fang butt heads over Ari and Fang's reactions further down the line illustrate what it would be like to not only have to take on an evil multi-national conglomerate, but what it's like to be fourteen and taking on such a task.

The use of the internet as a rallying cry to bring other young people into the scene to help out the flock shows readers, young and old alike, that young people are bright and resourceful, not just running to the closest adult (who'd hear a kid telling a crazy story and blow them off) to resolve the situation.

Mr. Patterson has done a great job at creating a universe where young readers will very much enjoy themselves and want to come back for more. Heck, I've got a Master's degree and am ten years out of high school, and I can't wait for the next book in this series.

4 out of 5 stars Pleasant diversion.......2007-10-04

Max Ride is a fun character. She and her companions have been well developed through the series. As the fifth book in which these winged adolescents appear, it is a pleasant way of relaxing into the world of one's imagination.

5 out of 5 stars If you are a teen you will love it!.......2007-09-18

If this book was targeted for a broad audience then I would rate it a 1. However, and fortunately, it is not. If you are 9 to 14, buy it, you will love it! The series has a very specific range of readers: kids under eight will not be able to comprehend the concept (excluding the elite); teens over fourteen may be psycologically beyond accepting the elementary concept (for them I recommend adult science-fiction).

Patterson does a wonderful job of delivering an outstanding teen series. Read them all!

5 out of 5 stars I hope this isn't the last for Max!.......2007-09-13

A great trilogy! I just hope this isn't all for this delightful yet action packed series. A great book series for any age.

Book Description

Bring your chickens home to roost in comfort and style! Whether you're keeping one hen in a small backyard or 1,000 hens in a large free-range pasture, you will find the perfect housing plan in this comprehensive handbook.

Author and farmer Judy Pangman combed the country to select these 45 plans for housing both laying hens and meat birds (chickens or turkeys). The coops range from fashionable backyard structures featured in the annual Seattle Tilth City Chickens Tour and the Mad City Chickens Tour in Madison, Wisconsin, to the large-scale, moveable structures Joel Salatin has fashioned for Polyface Farm in Virginia.

You'll also find plans for converting trailer frames, greenhouses, and backyard sheds; low-budget alternatives for working with found and recycled materials; and simple ways to make waterers, feeders, and nestboxes. A gallery of color photographs provides other creative ideas to get you going. With basic building skills, a little elbow grease, and this book of plans, you've got all you need to shelter your flock.

3 out of 5 stars No plans in this book! Just ideas.......2007-08-11

This book would have gotten 5/5 stars from me if it read, "Chicken Coops: 46 Building IDEAS/PICTURES for housing your flock." There are absolutely NO PLANS IN THIS BOOK!!! If your looking for with actual plans in it, try "Poultry House Construction, by Michael Roberts." That book is under a hundred pages and is a wealth of knowledge (with various plans in it). If your looking for great chicken coop IDEAS than this is your book. There are a lot of great ideas in this book, and if your good with planning and tools than this is all you need. As I said if the book supplemented the word Ideas instead of plans I would have given it five starts. This is a great book, it just has a misleading title. Sorry Ms. Pangman I can't give you 5 stars when your book doesn't live up to it's title.

5 out of 5 stars Chicken Coops - 45 Building Plans for Housing Your Flock.......2007-07-26

Lately our garden has been over run with weeds and grasshoppers, I am planning to build a small coop to house and protect a few chickens, mostly for weed control, but a few eggs would be a good bonus. This book is full of ideas. I can use the ideas from many of the plans to design a coop to fit our needs. I recommend this book to any one who has a need for a small coop or a small area for chickens.

2 out of 5 stars Not what the tittle implies.......2007-07-11

Should I have read the reviews, including that of the author... I would probably not have this book on my shelves.

The book is interesting and amusing to see how different people has built different Coops and Houses for their birds but if you are looking for (as I was) real plans and how to build kind of book... you should look somewhere else.

What I have learned... is to read reviews and don't take book titles literally.

3 out of 5 stars Can't speak for book, just service.......2007-06-27

Since I ordered the book for a chicken-raising friend, I can't really speak for the book itself. It did take forever to get here though- several books I'd ordered through the marketplace came form various areas of the country days (or weeks) sooner!

2 out of 5 stars Coffee table chicken coop book.......2007-04-23

I was aware that there were no building plans (based on other reviews), but I wasn't too worried because of I can make materials lists pretty easily from drawings. However, I was surprised that the drawings in this book have incorrect measurements (rather frustrating). This is a coffee table book, and even as that, it's not so exciting. There were really only a few designs that broke away from the square-box chicken coop idea. The best thing about this book is the presentation of the idea of keeping chickens as being an urban middle-class phenomenon. It was good for ideas, but it's not a keeper.

The title characters in Me & Emma are very nearly photographic opposites--8-year-old Carrie, the raven-haired narrator, is timid and introverted, while her little sister Emma is a tow-headed powerhouse with no sense of fear. The girls live in a terrible situation: they depend on an unstable mother that has never recovered from her husband's murder, their stepfather beats them regularly, and they must forage on their own for food.

Stop here and you have a story told many times before, as fiction and nonfiction in tales like Ellen Foster, or I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings --stories in which a young girl reveals the horrors of her childhood. Me & Emma differentiates itself with a spectacular finish, shocking the reader and turning the entire story on its head. Through several twists and turns the reader learns that things are not quite the way our narrator led us to believe and everything crescendos in a way that (like all good thrillers) immediately makes you want to go back and read the whole book again from the start. --Victoria Griffith

Book Description

In many ways, Carrie Parker is like an other eight-year-old -- playing make-believe, dreading school, dreaming of faraway places. But even her imaginative mind can't shut out the realities of her impoverished North Carolina home or help her protect her younger sister, Emma.

By turns achingly naive and utterly pragmatic, Carrie has been shaped by the loss of her beloved daddy and by a drunken stepfather and her emotionally absent mother. Charting an astonishing course of survival for herself and Emma, she hopes to transform their lives into one more closely resembling the storybooks she treasures.

But after the sisters' plan to run away from home unravels, their world takes a shocking turn -- and one shattering moment ultimately reveals a truth that leaves everyone reeling.

Narrated with the simplicity and unabashed honestly of a child's perspective, Me & Emma is a vivid portrayal of heartbreaking loss of innocence, an indomitable spirit and incredible courage -- a story that will resonate with readers long after they've turned the final page.

5 out of 5 stars Me and Emma...Terrific!!.......2007-09-26

Wow..I am a new fan! I picked up "Me and Emma" at a garage sale for a buck with little expectation. WOW was I pleasantly surprised! This book was so great, the childhood memories were captured SO perfectly (making noises in the fan)and the heartbreak of sweet little Carrie. I am going online to find more Elizabeth Flock books and have already recommended to many friends. Thank you for writing a very moving book!

5 out of 5 stars heart-wrenching must read.......2007-09-04

I read dozens of novels every year and this was one of the best I've come across in a while. The story is compelling- I didn't want to put it down because I just had to find out what would happen next. The story is troubling, to say the least, since there is a lot of abuse throughout the entire story. But I find that often the novels that deal with the most painful parts of human life are often the best reads even though they make one's heart heavy. (Take Beloved for example.) I think people who say they saw the end coming from the beginning are probably exaggerating. I consider myself a fairly clever reader and I did not expect the surprising ending at all. I'm going to suggest this book to everyone in my book club, and to everyone that wants a well-crafted, thought-provoking tale.

ME & EMMA by Elizabeth Flock
August 30, 2007

Amazon Rating: 5/5 stars

I remember all the hoopla that surrounded this book a few years ago, but I never had a chance to read it until now. What really surprises me is that this was published by Mira, which some of you know is an imprint of Harlequin. It goes to show the variety of books that comes out of that publishing company -anything from straight romance to women's fiction to thrillers to African American fiction.

ME & EMMA was the story of two sisters, Caroline and Emma, who suffer under the hands of their stepfather Richard, a man who married their widowed mother after their father was murdered by a burglar. The two girls are young, I believe six and eight years old, with Carrie being the older of the two. As Carrie narrates the story, the reader learns about the abuse that the two girls suffer under the hands of this man, while their mother seems to be emotionally detached from the girls, as she too is being physically abused often when Richard sees the need to slap someone around.

The two sisters have their bedroom up in the hot attic, a place where they are often locked in by their stepfather. And while they are not in their room, there are various atrocities that are committed, in which most of the acts are done upon young Emma.

Carrie has problems in school as well, but usually she finds her own way and fights back if she can. But it's Emma that is strong and can beat up bigger boys who try to pick fights with them. The news of a move far away to another state sends the girls into a panic, and they run away hoping to be left behind. But Richard finds them and the punishment he exacts upon them is so awful I won't go into it here. The sad part is that their mother does not defend them, but actually chastises them for angering Richard.

The move goes on as planned, and Richard now works graveyard shift doing thankless work. The sisters deal with their new surroundings, in an area that is so rural that it takes some time to reach the next neighbors property. But they now live by a stream and trees and the great outdoors. Carrie begins to spend a lot of her time with an elderly cranky neighbor who takes her under his wing. Emma is soon left behind, as Carrie finds new friends at school and at home.

But things of course continue to be difficult for the girls, as Richard gets into troubles in town and at work. The climatic conclusion caught me by surprise, as I did not see this coming at all. This ending pretty much makes the book what it is, a story of abuse and the resulting emotional traumas that leave their mark on these children. This ending also changed the perspective of what was really happening throughout the novel, as one will find out after reading that last chapter.

This is definitely a five-star book and will doubtlessly be in my top 10 for 2007. This book does come with a warning, for those who cannot and will not read books about abuse, as the images are graphic. However, I found this to be a riveting story, and could not put down the book. ME & EMMA comes highly recommended.

Book Description

Chickens-why not? Tens of thousands of people in all areas of the country enjoy raising these birds, whether for food or companionship. You can, too, with this indispensable guide. Then again, you may want to read Living With Chickens just for the sheer joy of it.
Straightforward prose and dozens of clear, detailed illustrations gives any future chicken farmer the tools he needs to get started, from step-by-step instructions on building the coop to a brief background on chicken biology ("gizzard talk"); from hints on getting high-quality eggs from the hens, to methods for butchering. Vermonter Jay Rossier draws on his own experiences and those of his fellow poultrymen in discussing how to keep marauders from the chicken coop, the benefits of homemade grain versus commercial, and how to live (and sleep) with a rooster in your midst. Personal anecdotes, interesting facts, and lush, full-color photographs of the birds and their landscape round out this comprehensive book.

4 out of 5 stars coffee table book.......2007-09-21

The book has information about keeping chickens, but all the glossy pictures of chickens and the writing style made it seem like a coffee table book about chickens instead of a practical guide.

5 out of 5 stars The best overall chicken book.......2007-07-05

This is by far the best overall chicken book.I tried Story's guide, wow was that boring and dry. This was very easy to read cover to cover. This will tell you everything about raising them from A-Z. The best part is there are pictures and examples. I would recommend getting Choosing and keeping Chickens by Chris Graham to get a more in depth view of each breed, size, personality and it has great pictures. As a beginner I found I needed both books.

5 out of 5 stars Living with Chickens: Everything You Need to Know to Raise Your Own Backyard Flock.......2007-03-18

I have just finished reading this book. I loved it. It includes some general information and directions for finding out other needed information. In the back it includes hatchery and cooperative extension information for most states. It is full of wonderful pictures of the chickens doing their own thing. I feel that anyone that is not already raising chickens should at least read and enjoy this book. If you don't enjoy anything else about the book you will love the pictures and the stories that go along with them.

5 out of 5 stars Nice book! Recommended highly.......2006-02-17

Friendly style, full of information, & tons of special, vivid photos-- I read this cover to cover in a day and really enjoyed it. A GREAT book for the person who is thinking about starting a small backyard flock. One of my favorites. (The layout is unique, too- engaging and easy to read.)

I would strongly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for the beginning chicken owner!.......2005-05-30

I read this book cover-to-cover the first day and next morning that I got it from the library. Very clear and easy to understand even for a kid. The book is written with a touch of humor that makes it especially fun to read! There is BEAUTIFUL photography in this book. If you are thinking about getting chickens like I am, or already own them, you won't want to pass this book up! Happy Reading!

2 out of 5 stars Trying to impress you.......2007-10-04

I was very disappointed in this book as it really said nothing about NZ. Rather it is an attempt of one arrogant New Yorker's idea of how to impress you with how well he can judge people and wine.

I couldn't finish it. This is rare for me as I am a compulsive reader. I don't usually review books....but if you want to know about NZ this is *not* the item.

3 out of 5 stars Inspires to visit NZ, but without the author.......2007-08-11

I purchased this book because I enjoy reading personal accounts of travel as a jumping off point to plan my own trips. The best of these books inspire you to visit the described locations and wish that the author could travel with you.

Although I enjoyed the descriptions of New Zealand and the Kiwis, the tone and attitudes of the author made me hope that I would never meet him, in New Zealand or elsewhere. Because of this limitation, I am extremely unlikely to re-read this book. Once is enough time of my life to spend with Mr. Elder.

If you are looking for an entertaining travel book from an author you may still like as a person at the end of the book, I strongly recommend In a Sunburned Country by Bill Bryson. I've read this book cover to cover at least twice and will occasionally pick it up just to read a chapter at random. I find it funny and informative at the same time.

4 out of 5 stars Great way to see NZ, if you can afford it.......2007-06-27

I found Dr. Elder's book a fine read, and a great way to pass the time until my NZ work Visa comes through. The only issue I have with the book is that it paints a fantasy most people cannot possibly obtain- he goes on every expensive side trip, sips fine wines, smokes fancy cigars, and hires private aircraft to whisk him about. I would love to travel that way, don't get me wrong, but be aware that you may be in for some sticker shock if you set out to mimic the experience described in this book.

4 out of 5 stars Book review.......2007-05-18

Reads well. Good insight into the ins and outs of staying at homestays and farmstays.

5 out of 5 stars Guide Book to New Zealand .......2007-03-02

I really enjoyed reading this book daily. It was like spending an hour a day with Dr. Elder in New Zealand. His writing really brought his journey alive. I laughed out loud several times at his humor and wit. This book will take you with him as he travels from home stay to home stay in the wonderful Southern Pacific island nation of New Zealand during the mild winter. You will get to meet the owners of each homestay that open up their homes to travelers. This sounds much more enjoyable than the cookie cutter hotels. The traveller receives wonderful fresh from the farm juices, breads, fruits, and some times hours old fish caught from the ocean. This sounds wonderful when compared to fast food and hotels with continental breakfasts. Also I love Dr. Elder's three rules on vacation: No fast food, No T.V., and No hotels(if possible). I also found the historical background of New Zealand interesting, I learned a lot from this book about a country I new nothing about. It is a must see travel destination for me now.
In the back of the book Dr. Elder leaves you with the information yo you will need to plan your own successful vacation. You will receive the addresses and phone numbers of all the best country home stays that were visited. You will also receive information on all the best guides and tours. He lists web sites to visit to prepare, and what to pack. Also you will receive great advice on how to travel business class at better prices and how to lessen the effects of jet lag. I highly recommend.

5 out of 5 stars Even a moron could raise sheep after reading this book!.......2007-10-04

In "Living with Sheep: Everything You Need to Know to Raise your Own Flock" the author covers exactly what the title implies, EVERYTHING you will need to know to raise sheep! Mr. Wooster writes in a very relaxed, and often humorous way. It's kind of like having coffee with a friend who's giving you pratical and essential instruction from 1st hand experience with sheep. Let me also say that the photo's in this book are excellent- bravo to Geoff Hansen!

Amongst topics covered by this book are: Sheep history, picking your sheep, things you should think about BEFORE you even get sheep, how to handle sheep, the various type of sheep breeds (meat, wool, dual-purpose and heirloom), land support, sheep shelter, fences, hay, how to properly feed your sheep, pasture rotation, raising lambs, organic lamb meat, butchering, wool production, rams and sheep health. This book also has a wonderful Appendix section in the back. Among the Appendix list is: Ewe gestation charts, tools & equipment you will need, summary month-by-month of a shepard's year, and a listing of state sheep sources and breed associations.

That being said Mr. Wooster really knows his sheep! I would invest in a hardback copy as here on Amazon it is cheaper than most retail paperback editions. The paper stock is thick, semi-glossy, flexible and will survive through repeated reading.

A solid 5 stars!

5 out of 5 stars loved this book.......2007-06-05

This is a wonderful book for beginning shepherds (more experienced too). Very entertaining and informative.

5 out of 5 stars What a great book.......2007-03-22

If you are a newcomer to living on a small farm and are looking for information on livestock to keep on your small acreage, this is a great book.

The author is very detailed yet understandable about every aspect of sheep raising and care.

It is also written for people from every angle. If you want to raise your own lambs and slaughter them or, like me, you don't want to use them for any other purpose other than as pets who keep the lawn down, this is just the book for you. The author covers everything you will need and makes you look forward to getting your first flock.

Really enjoyed it.

5 out of 5 stars Great Photo's.......2007-01-23

I liked this book it has great glossy photos in it. Lots of storys and good advice. I would buy Storey's Raising Sheep book as a basic book but this one was a real nice read.

5 out of 5 stars Fully fleeced in the NW.......2007-01-12

Geoff Hansen's guide to raising sheep is an honest and oftentimes humourous look at the joys and sometimes sorrows of raising and better yet "living" with our fleecey friends. I found the section dealing with lambing to be excellent, easy to follow and informative. I also like that Mr. Hansen takes the time and trouble to look at all aspects of living with sheep and not just his own preferences. I highly reccomend this book for anyone at any level of experience as it reads like you have a friend standing next to you offering sage advice and useful information in a language that all can relate to.

Book Description

"This is the first coherent autobiographical study of its kind, and it is absolutely mesmerizing....Simply not be be missed."
THE DETROIT NEWS
When Joan Frances Casey "awoke" on the ledge of a building ready to jump, she did not know how she had gotten there. And it wasn't the first time she had blanked out. She decided to give therapy another try. And after a few sessions, Lynn Wilson, an experienced psychiatric social worker, was shocked to discover that Joan had MPD--Multiple Personality Disorder. And as she came to know Joan's distinct selves, Lynn uncovered a nightmarish pattern of emotional and physical abuse, including rape and incest, that nearly succeeded in smothering the artistic and intellectual gifts of this amazing young woman.

4 out of 5 stars Flock:The Autobiography of a Multiple Personality.......2007-01-12

Struggling with being a multiple myself, it was helpful to read about another person's struggles and how they dealt with these issues. I wish there were more autobiographies of this kind, it helps to not feel so totally alone.

3 out of 5 stars this is hard to rate.......2006-07-31

I found this book to be very gripping, fast paced, and good in that it focused on recovery rather than the graphic details of abuse. However, the problem is that the therapy promoted here is, quite frankly, ridiculous.

Casey becomes a member of her therapist's family and does "therapy" with both her therapist and the therapist's husband. Even way back then, responsible therapists were not advocating this type of extreme "reparenting," and certainly virtually no one would do it now. It's well-written, but if anyone takes it seriously as a blueprint to recovery, it may cause discouragement because the "treatment" is grossly unrealistic.

Also, I thought Lynn was really invested in Casey's separateness. There is a telling anecdote when Casey is hanging out with Lynn and Gordon (Lynn's husband) and Lynn says something like "why doesn't Renee (a personality) come with me to go shopping while Rusty (another personality) stays with Gordon to work on the boat?"

Any therapist who is at all mainstream is going to grind their teeth over stuff like this. It's obvious to me that Lynn and Casey were both very invested in Casey's specialness - we hear about how smart she is, for example, by her stating that she had to deliberately make mistakes on an "easy" IQ test to avoid ostracization - and we hear about how special she is for being MPD. She *does* seem to be very smart and charismatic, as well as determined to recover. I'm glad this very unorthodox treatment worked for her.

Finally, Casey does not ever consider an obvious benefit to her recovery: at the time of her therapy, she was childless. Many MPD/DID clients are raising children, sometimes as single mothers, and that makes recovery *much* more difficult. So to hold oneself up as a role model, when one does not have the complex life that other clients have, is a bit obnoxious, in my opinion.

(I have no children myself so this is not intended to criticize those without children.)

Given the fact that the therapy and the extended reparenting was, quite literally, bizarre, Casey is very fortunate that the cure was not worse than the disease.

2 out of 5 stars Least interesting and helpful book on the subject thus far.......2006-05-15

I have read many books on MPD/DID, and this one is the least interesting and helpful thus far. I do not wish to take any personal jabs at the author, however, MPD/DID is obviously not her only disorder. By the time you get to the end of the book and read about more post-healing "tragedies" and abuse, one gets the feeling that the author thrives on such drama. When people write autobigraphies, they take the reader into their world. I do not wish to be dragged into this author's world. It's not about happy endings, but it is about wanting to read truly good books written by truly healthy people who have truly overcome.

5 out of 5 stars Good book.......2006-03-01

This is a very readable account of Multiple Personality. Narrated by a single member of The Flock and supplemented by notes and diary entries of The Flock's therapist, it never gets confusing, as narratives of Multiplicty can. Ms Casey is a very good writer, and the feelings and motivations of several members of The Flock are presented.

There is also no graphic depiction of the abuse that caused Joan Frances Casey to shatter. It is dealt with matter-of-factly and rather distantly. The author focuses instead on The Flock's adult life.

It's a good book, non-triggering and safe but also quite interesting and informative.

5 out of 5 stars my favorite chicken book!.......2007-10-05

I bought a lot of chicken books before I got my first day-old chicks this past spring; this is my favorite one! I keep referring to it over and over. Great basic info. for those of us who have never done chickens before, with lots of practical tips and tricks from those who have been doing it forever! A few goofy, annoying typos and such, but I was willing to overlook those for the good info.!

2 out of 5 stars boring read, nice effort.......2007-08-10

I would hate to hurt anyone's feelings, but I didn't really learn anything from this book and it didn't appear to have anything new to say. I should have returned it when I got it, but returning items are a hassle to me. I was just hoping for some new insight or something more daring or direct. hats off to anyone that attempts writing and the criticism that evolves from such work. I hope her next effort is more interesting.

Book Description

Chickens are hot! There's a chicken-farming boomlet on the rise, with upscale urban and suburban homeowners from every part of the country ordering fancy breeds of chickens, hiring architects to build elegant chicken coops in their backyards, and signing up for classes on how to raise a happy, healthy flock in a small space.

Now Barbara Kilarski, a woman with a passion for poultry, offers a handbook that is as practical and encouraging as it is witty and entertaining. THE TOWN & COUNTRY CHICKEN provides the detailed information every aspiring chickenkeeper needs to know.

Like home-grown vegetables, home-raised chickens put us in touch with our rural past, give us a sense of self-sufficiency, and provide food - eggs! - for the table that is a lot tastier than anything we could find at the supermarket. And chickens are fun! Like dogs, they bond with their owners, and like kids, they do the darnedest things.

Kilarski regales the reader with tales spotlighting the joys of raising chickens, while at the same time explaining the nitty-gritty details of how to be a successful chicken keeper.

Any way you look at it, chickens are a star of the domestic household. They are easy and inexpensive to raise, they don't need much living space, and they provide eggs for free. No dog or cat on the planet can make the same claim.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Love those chickens!.......2007-09-11

I very much enjoy this book -- I love the author's stories about her hens, and learned so much about how to care for my own chickens. I enjoyed her writing style, and her funny tales about her chickens were great. I'm planning to build a chicken house and yard (my chickens roost in the trees, lay eggs in the barn and around the pasture now), and the information from this book is a great help. The pictures and art are wonderful, and I will use this book as a reference for caring for my new rapidly growing chicken family. I never knew chickens were so much fun!

4 out of 5 stars Chicks Rule.......2007-07-09

I loved the easy way this book introduces the topic. It's also well designed and has great photos of the breeds and of coop designs. Well done.

4 out of 5 stars Good suburb chicken book .......2007-05-22

This book is insightful, has lots of quality information, and is less than 150 pages of text. If you are a city/suburb backyard chicken hobbyist this book is the right book for you. "Storey's Guide To Raising Chickens" by Gail Damerow has much more information, and is a better resource if you plan on having more than three or four hens (The author even tells talks about Damerow's book in her book). But Kilarski's book is true to it's title, "Keep Chickens! Tending Small Flocks in Cities, Suburbs, and Other Small Spaces." The author does tend to ramble from time to time but it's not over the top. Again, the title of the book is right on the money for what this book does.

4 out of 5 stars Good info after sifting through all the chattiness.......2007-05-07

Kilarski probably should have hired someone to edit out much of the chatty, superfluous information in this book. There's lots of good stuff in here, but I tired of all the cute, and, what she obviously thinks are, charming witticisms. I found it took much more time to read this and glean the true grit than from Hobby Farms' CHICKENS by Sue Weaver, who also uses a bit of humor here and there but doesn't bog the reader down with it. If you have nothing better to do with your time, then you will likely find Kilarski's book a delight. And she DOES teach us things about raising and keeping chickens, which is what I was looking for.

5 out of 5 stars Great book! One annoying thing...........2007-04-20

This is a FABULOUS book that really gets you excited about the chicks! It makes you feel like it is the most sane thing in the world to have backyard chickens. I very much appreciate the author's approach (though I do disagree with a few small points, ie., straw for bedding, I much prefer pine shavings, as straw seems to harbor pests). This book and Storeys book are required for small flocks!

HOWEVER, there is one VERY ANNOYING thing..... she keeps referring to her "spouse", a word almost no one uses (everyone uses husband/wife or partner) and it becomes very clear that she has purposly ommited any references to her "spouses" gender---- She never says "*she* was so excited we were getting chickens!"-- it is "my spouse was excited" ??!!?? It seems abundantly clear from the outset that Kilarski is gay, but everytime she uses the word "spouse" or unnaturally omits a gender specific prounoun it is PAINFUL!!! It seems so obvious, and uncomfortable to constantly feel her avoid using the word "she" in reference to her partner!!! We got it-- you aren't hiding it from anyone, we can tell your gay, it is just painful for the reader to see you so clearly dancing around it!

And I am a straight, religious, married for 13 years woman!! :) Really, we would love your book just as much if you were obviously OUT!

Great book! Congrats!!

5 out of 5 stars The Best Livestock Book I've Ever Read!.......2004-10-28

This book tells you everything you need to know about raising ducks. I've had a small flock of ducks for six years now, and this book has been very useful.

Unlike most of the other livestock books I've read, it is well written, and holds your interest. I sometimes actually reread this book for fun, even when I'm not looking for any specific information.

5 out of 5 stars great for beginners & experienced waterfowl keepers alike.......2003-08-29

An excellent book that can help the novice (or prospective) Duck Keeper get started right. It also offer a tremendous amount of informationa and insights for the experienced keeper. The author combines a rare knowledge of the subject with an excellent ability to share and a wonderful writing style. If you keep, or plan to keep ducks, this should be in your library. The New Edition has been retitled 'Storey's Guide to Raising Ducks: Breeds, Care, Health' by the publisher and includes updated information and a new section on color genetics of ducks.

5 out of 5 stars This book is Magic for Duck owners.......2001-10-14

I use several Ducks in my act and stumbled into the world of Waterfowl without prior knowledge. This book provides everything you need to know to raise, breed, feed, and handle with care these precious creatures. If there is one book to have for owning ducks this is the one!
The author is no "quack" and really knows his stuff!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent! Anyone with ducks should own this book!.......1999-10-22

I have read this book so many times now, I may need a new copy. I decided to get ducks to raise, but first read this book, suggested to me by online poultry news group folks.I have had no difficulties raising ducks now because I followed all the advice from Dave's book.I had never raised poultry of my own before. And after having ducks, I also went the next step and ordered live adult rare ducks from this author, who also owns a duck preservation center. Beautiful, magnificent ducks ! 'Raising the Home Duck Flock' is truly the "Duck Owner's Bible".

5 out of 5 stars everything you want to know!.......1999-05-21

Before I had to move into the city, I raised Muscovy ducks as a hobby. This book is indispensible and very well written. I would recommend it to anyone wanting to raise waterfowl for fun or profit. I'll definitely be pulling it off the bookshelf again when I'm in a place where I can resume raising them!
