5 out of 5 stars Practical, thorough tool that helps Churches a lot.......2005-10-25

We have used this tool since it came out. I've found that this tool is best for easily organizing the 'how to' stuff of small group leadership. It does not cover the ministerial philosophy issues. A good book for that is 'Master Plan of Evangelism' by Robert Coleman.

As the title for this book says, it covers nine keys for effective small group leadership. Each key really has four or five sub points...so in reality it is nine times about five...or forty five keys if you will. But George has organized them into nine groups...or keys.

We've found that leaders who study this material are easier to work with and easier to build a vision with for a local church ministry. There are a lot of books on Small Group Leadership that will help you. This one is very practical. It's so well written you can use it even if all you do is read the paragraph headers. Everything is well explained and easy to find or follow.

So even for leaders who don't like to read or who you suspect will not read everything you ask them to read, this book still might get through to them. I recommend it as a curriculum text for a course in a local church/ministry for leading small groups.

Enjoy it!

Carl George effectively communicates the essential basics. This book does a good job of highlighting the difference between being a facilitator of small group time and being a leader (someone who is a disciple-maker). I have used this book as the main text for training small group leaders. It provides great material for interactive discussion and presenting a wholistic picture of all that small groups can be.

5 out of 5 stars Best book on Small Groups.......2001-11-15

The best two things about this book are: 1) it helps the small group leader coordinate with the pastor, and 2) it includes shepherding, building community, discipleship and evangelism as part of the small group experience. It is the best balanced book available today!

5 out of 5 stars This is the book on small groups that I hand out to pastors.......2000-04-22

I am a small-groups person. I have been in one small group or another, often as a leader, almost continually, for the past 30 years. I believe small groups are just about the most important aspect of a church's life.

I have read many books on this, gone to many seminars. There is a lot of good material on this topic.

But in my present role as a church consultant, this is the book on small groups that I hand to pastors who are wanting to know how to grow a small group ministry or how to better equip their small group leaders.

Why? As George explains in this book, most church small groups do a good job of promoting nurture and fellowship, but most stop there. George believes an effective small group should perform three basic functions, not just nurture. In addition to nurture, he believes small groups should be effectively engaged in small-group-based evangelism (George says that in any given year, only one small group in four does any evangelism), and he thinks that small groups should constantly be training small group leaders through apprenticeship. I agree that a small group needs all three functions. And so I use this book as the entry point for someone who is new to these ideas about small group life.

After this introduction, I point churches to further training or more in-depth printed materials about various aspects of this approach to small groups, but in my opinion, there's not a better starting point than this one.

5 out of 5 stars Must-read for small-group leaders.......1999-09-20

Read anything you can find by Carl George. I believe God is using him to impact the way church will be "done" in the 21st Century

    Book Description

On election night, 1992, Larry Stockstill heard God's still, small voice saying, "There are two things coming to America: harvest and hostility. Your church is not prepared for either of them." God continued to reveal to Stockstill a new model for doing church, a model that brought ministry down to the grassroots, where most church members were active-rather than just the "professional pastors." This model expands the evangelism and discipleship possibilities of the church, so that when revival hits, the Church will be able to handle all the new believers. That model is the cell church. See how it is revolutionizing churches around the world-and why it promises to be the church model for 21st-century revival.

3 out of 5 stars Good, helpful content; amateurish writing.......2007-08-28

The writing style and/or the editing left much to be desired. The overuse of punctuation and the overly-conversational style was reminiscent of some of my old middle-school papers. Other than that, it was a good practical working out of the cell principles introduced in other books. There is meat in there if you can wade through the all the quotation marks, parentheses, exclamation points and the like.

1 out of 5 stars Didn't care for this book.......2000-03-01

I just finished reading this book because we are preparing to lead a cell group in our cell church. I found many parts of the book to be legalistic. Procedures outlined sounded more like a government agency processing refugees at the border--not loving individuals serving God's people. The emphasis seemed to be on getting large numbers of people into the program. Much of the verbiage was very controlling sounding--with converts being marched through a prescribed program of classes, retreats, cell attendance, etc, which are credited with bringing spiritual maturity.

There is very little to no sense conveyed that it is the Lord who saves souls, who gives power, who brings Christians to maturity, who is control of whether the church will have 50 new cells next year--not our classes and plans.

The Principle of 12 really sounded like a multi-level marketing structure applied to believers' relationships. Here is a quote: "Every new convert you win and disciple can then be "fed" into the cell of one of "your permanent twelve" who has opened a group. By helping them grow, you also grow, because once all of the positions in "your permanent twelve" are filled, the only way for anyone else to enter that group is for someone to leave, die or fall away. In that case, someone from a "twelve" under you would be raised up to fill that position."

This is not Christianity! This is artificial; this is bondage to a system.

I also don't buy the scriptural reasoning that since there were 12 Tribes in Israel and 12 apostles (those numbers are related to each other, though) that means that there is a principle that can be applied to numbers in cells. I also disagree with this use of the same "principle": "Using the "Principle of Twelve," a realistic goal would be to prayerfully bring at least "twelve" people to the Lord each year through personal soul winning." Where is God in that picture? Who saves?

There are better books about the very real strengths and possibilities of cell churches.

4 out of 5 stars Nice and Practical Cell Stuff.......1999-12-22

Very worth reading. Mr. Stockstill speaks very plainly & generously about his experiences with transitioning a mega-church into what he calls a cell church. Although their cell church is still only a baby, there is plenty to learn from and apply in local settings. Pastors/leaders may do well to read the 10th chapter first, regarding dangers & chalanges, because he addresses several issues head-on that are preventing the 'clergy' from letting go & discovering options to the conventional church models that have helped our church and our country become what we are today.

5 out of 5 stars Church Reformation for 21st Century........1998-10-24

Stockstill lays out the cell church in easy to understand lingo and strategy. This book crosses the ocean from Korea to the U.S. and gives us the American version to the cell church explosion. "I love his style. I'm going to read it again in case I missed something." Read the book "The purpose driven church" by Warren first and this one next and it will give you a completely new look at church growth, purpose and how to win the world for Christ. He gives spiritual insight to many of the hurdles in cell division. "The Principle of 12" will rock your world.

    Book Description

Although the largest churches in the world are cell-based, many have questioned whether the model will work in North America. The Church In Many Houses: Reaching Your Community Through Cell-Based Ministry makes the case that the cell model will work— if key assumptions about spiritual growth and the nature of the church are reexamined and renewed. By drawing on scripture, research, and insights gained through personal experience as the pastor of a growing cell church, Steve Cordle identifies the four pivotal philosophical shifts necessary for the cell approach to work. These are mindset shifts that move from:

    * programs to relationships—the purposes of the church are best fulfilled in the cell group instead of in programs

    * member to disciple-maker—every member can and should become a group leader

    * educating to equipping—spiritual growth is not knowing more but applying more

    * "come and see" to "go and show"—the power of penetration evangelism.

Impose a cell structure upon a congregation that has not yet made these philosophical shifts we are likely to fail. But when people adopt these biblical mindset changes, the cell approach will seem natural, and will result in great unity and effectiveness. The Church In Many Houses will help congregations make the changes that are necessary for success.

5 out of 5 stars The Ur-cell group work and still the best. .......2007-02-08

Both a devotional and a how to. One may need to be a bit forgiving with Cho's choice of phrases from time to time, but the principles are sound and still after so many years, revolutionary.

5 out of 5 stars Inspiring. Informative. Illustrative. Profound........2006-07-31

"Successful Home Cell Groups" is much more than a formula for church-based small groups. It is an insightful journey into God's building the largest church in the world. Using one broken man, Cho, God has created a formula for all of us to examine, emulate and admire.

So how does a church of more than 800,000 believers grow and work? Small groups, one household at a time. Cho is careful to sharing both his mistakes as well as his successes. One of the prime ingredients for a successful home group program is evangelism. He insists that the cell groups focus on the neighborhoods and communities to reach the lost. Leadership, training, discipline, recognition, focus, and personal involvement by the senior pastor are other critical elements.

There is a careful balance which needs to be struck between control and freedom for each group to strengthen and grow. Great wisdom is shown in relying on the Holy Spirit to strike the right balance. As a senior partner in ministry, The Holy Spirit has grown the body of Christ in a miraculous way.

Recorded in this book are lessons for us all, laymen and clergy, large church and small.

5 out of 5 stars A must read for those who are looking into cell groups.......2004-08-09

There is no doubt about Dr Cho's influence on our modern day cell group and church movement. He is at the absolute forefront, his insights and heart for ministry are a huge blessing to the church international.

This book is one of the key books to read to help anyone understand the simplicity and necessity of cell groups for church life. The concepts are incredibly helpful and insightful.

This book stands alone on the merits of the principals it teaches. It is not a greatly written book but that is not it's purpose.

Readers that do not live in Korea or asian cultures should carefully apply the principles this book provides. It will work but it is based upon a different mindset that most American church goers don't have. There are other great books by Ralph Neighbor and Carl George that will also give great insight on the american chuches need to move to cell groups and how to do it with out destroying the church or a ministers career.

5 out of 5 stars He speaks our Language!.......2001-01-09

Dr Cho speaks as a lay person even though he is the pastor of the worlds largest church. I had my reservations about reading the book for fear that the content may be too detailed or uncomprehesible for a young aspiring cell-group leader, but Cho has written a simple to understand and inspiring guide to building, or transitioning to, a cell-based church. This book speaks of the principles of building such a church, which seem to be universal...what does this mean?...you will not be able to use excuses about your culture or your congregation. The priciples and groundwork laid out by Dr. Cho will change your perspective on church growth for ever.

    5 out of 5 stars Cho, what a guy!.......2000-09-03

Home groups are the best! We have them in my 1,200 member church and they have allowed me to unite with the heart of the church and with the people of the church. Home groups are as useful in North America, South America, or Korea. Most of the "mega-churches" of today have them, including Ted Haggard (New Life, CO, 7,000 members), Peter Wagner, and the 90,000+ member churches of Argentina and Africa.

    5 out of 5 stars Real Solutions.......2005-05-19

This is a great book. As an emerging cell-church pastor I particularly appreciated the lack of focus on a "model" cell church. Joel lays out the necessary principles to become an effective, missional, cell-church without espousing a particular method or system. The principles in this book can be ingested and then given individual expression in any community of believers. I would also recommend this book to anyone seeking more information about what a cell church is, or contemplating becoming a relationship-driven community.

5 out of 5 stars Great new USA data on cell-based churches.......2005-04-01

Comiskey has done a great job of giving page after page after page of US churches that are making cell group-based ministry work well. These churches are from every background-Pentecostal to Charismatic to Conservative Southern Baptist churches.

This book complements his previous writing, published by www.cellgrouppeople.com and is a good read for pastors looking at the model from the outside. It's also a good read for pastors doing cell groups now because it corrects numerous misconceptions not found in other books.

    5 out of 5 stars Wow...What a book!.......2005-02-12

Wow...what a book. As a layperson I have been intrigued by the massive growth of churches in other countries especially Pastor David Cho's church in South Korea. I always wondered why not in North America? I had a suspicion that because of the United States emphasis on individuality and privacy that a massive church on par with ones in Colombia, Korea, and Chile was simply not possible here. Yet my heart longed for that revival. Joel Comiskey's groundbreaking book on transforming the North American Church is a giant and exciting step towards realizing that the church in North America will begin to "catch up."
I was so involved in the book! Chapters 1 and 2 are sobering for Christians to read. The State of the North American Church (chapter 1) is stunning to read but wait Comiskey offers hope! One can not read this book without reflecting on theirown experience but at the same time getting excited about the possibilities for the church in North America! What is lacking in the North American church is frankly discussed and offers conviction and motivation to the reader to see things differently.
Clearly discussed is the application of the Cell Church to North America. Chapters 6-14 are exceptional in helping one understand the cell church model and it's flexibility for every situation. I must pause here. The most important chapter of the book and the one Comiskey gives a paramount emphasis to is Chapter 6. In this chapter he discusses the need for prayer to be the foundation for any church. Churches that pray are seeing God do amazing things. It isn't the model that brings new believers to the church it is prayer and only prayer that brings lasting change and insight. As Comiskey writes people go to church to see Jesus. It is not the program or technique that makes a difference, it is prayer. Here I believe is the essence of the book that should reassure any skeptic about building churches for Jesus. An extremely well researched book with insightful and helpful ways to expand the church in North America has not forgotten the essence to seeing God work and that begins when we are on our knees.
I am excited to discuss this book with others including my pastor. Although I attend a rather large church (over 2000) the need to be a part of a community of believers in a small group (cell) I believe is so necessary and is the key area that is missing in the North American Church. I know now that cell churches can be successful in North America and I can't wait to see God's blessing on the North American Church. Soon we will experience God's Harvest and this book will definitely help us get there. May we all be excited about spreading the Gospel in our neighborhoods.

4 out of 5 stars What really works .......2004-12-07

This book is practical, fact based, encouraging, and at times wonderfully uncomfortable. If like me you've wanted, or tried, to start or transition to a cell based church, this is a must. Its worth the price alone just for the idea of the "radical middle" and what works in North America.

5 out of 5 stars A Helpful Analysis of the Cell Churches in America.......2004-11-24

Joel's latest book is the application of years of watching and processing what is happening in the Christian church in America. Many have been attempting to apply Cell church methodology to the U.S. context, but few have been able to distill the driving elements and principles for success like Joel has in his latest book. It will undoubtable become a central tool for churches attempting to adopt a Cell Church approach.

This book powerfully impacted me as the cell administrator of our church. Joel's message in this book has found it's way into a majority of my teaching of both the new and existing cell leaders. If you're looking at becoming a cell church, this book will be a great asset to you. It will give you practical information, but (in my opinion) more importantly, it will inspire you. I couldn't put it down.

5 out of 5 stars This book is an excellent resource for cell churches.......2002-12-05

Joel Comiskey has written many books on cell groups and cell churches. In my opinion, this is the most practical. It is particularly helpful for laying the foundation of a new cell ministry. God is showing us that small group settings allow for deeper discipleship and rapid church growth. However, before we can multiply cells, we need to equip our leaders. It isn't about the quantity, it is about quality. I highly recommend this book to all those who are looking to start a new cell ministry. The harvest is plenty, but the workers are few. Let God begin to multiply cell group leaders within your church.

    5 out of 5 stars A Highly Recommended Tool!.......2001-03-10

This is an excellent in depth tool for church leaders who want to reach their communities for Christ. This hands on, nuts and bolts approach will inspire you to do exploits for the Kingdom of God.

Like a hammer and a wrench, this book is a must have in every church leaders tool box.

5 out of 5 stars Easy read - Important and Practical Concepts.......2002-09-15

In Home Cell Group Explosion, the author shows us why the intimate and nurturinging relationships that are shared by members of a small cell group simply cannot be reproduced to the same degree in ultra-large group gatherings. For this reason many traditional churches are unable to meet the needs of their individual members while at the same time striving to fulfill the great commission. He also reveals the main factors for the success of the largest cell-based churches in the world, and shows you why it is the way of the future. You should be able to read the book within a week.

4 out of 5 stars Should be required reading for every cell group leader........1999-06-05

Cuts through all the theories about why we think cell and small groups grow and provides carefully researched statistical data that proves why they do and why they don't multiply. Every planning/ministry/pastorial team should make this required reading for themselves as well as their group leaders.

4 out of 5 stars Cell Leader Intern Guidebook.......2000-02-08

Excellent work if you are involved or want to be involved in the leadership of a cell group. Perhaps described as the old testament of training manuals for cell groups. The new testament would be the companion book "Cell Leader Shepherds Guidebook.
