The Park Guell was originally a real estate development in 1900s Barcelona. It was commissioned to the famous Catalonian architect, Antoni Gaudi, by Eusebi Guell. After they died, the park was reopened as a city park. The book explores the heavenly park built in "the manner of angels" by Gaudi.

I don't know why Amazon, and other members -in their "special list of kitchen"- have this book among them, this book, just have more photographs than information, about interesting people from barcelona (and that's it). The guy in the photo of above it's "another guy among them...."
I'm very dissapointed with the book -and the recommendations-, i thought it was going to be a little bit more focussed in cooking

All in All, a Disappointment.......2006-03-29
Having been to Barcelona and seen videos of some of the exciting architecture there, I had high hopes for this book. Unfortunately they were not realized.
Some of the book's shortcomings are:
1. The book is quite small (5 inches square), so that you have to squint to see whatever details are visible;
2. The author focus on only the most recent architecture (the last five years), thus overlooking some of Barcelona's most important buildings;
3. Much of the book is taken up with interior shots, i.e., interior design, of restaurants and the like, which suggests the author may have been paid to promote certain establishments; and
4. Most importantly, many of the buildings he does include are mediocre, e.g., rectilinear apartment houses and factory buildings.
If you are interested in seeing an excellent video of Barcelona, try "Barcelona" [ASIN: 6303209777] a superb 1994 VHS tape that combines air and ground footage with none of the commercial plugs or other fluff that appear in most travel videos.

This book is the quintessential guide to the architectural masterpieces that make up the new modern design destination of Europe. I bought this book for Christmas 2004 for my upcoming favorite destination trip to Barcelona.There are many places to visit while in Barcelona. The shopping, art, and restaurants are among the most beautifully designed spaces that will make your jaw drop. I was fortunate enough to visit these spaces while in BCN in the spring of 2005. My favorite is the Hotel Arts Barcelona, the lobby is a visual feast. Alot these places are located in Ciutat Vella, or along the Barceloneta. There are many majestic sights in Barcelona. Especially the Museu d'Art Contemporani de Barcelona, it has been there about a decade but the architecture is timeless. Lupino also in the guide is better than I had anticipated great place to eat and the design is sleek and chic. Bestial is also at the top of the list on design and ambience. It is a place to "see and be seen" all the beautiful people of Barcelona trek to the Bar.It is a short walk from the Hotel Arts. You will definitely enjoy the book along with your trip to Barcelona. Take plenty of pix.

Catalan modernismo, a cultural and artistic style of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, was the Spanish equivalent of the Arts and Crafts movement and Art Noveau, the German Werkbund and the Viennese Secession. unbelievably beautiful! the impact of the Art Nouveau movement known in spain as Modernismo, had great bearing on the look of barcelona as a modernizing city in the early 20th century. the book is also a sharp tour guide of some of the great architectural works of a city that is brimming with incredible examples of the decorative arts. if youve been/youre going to barcelona or love nouveau/deco design-this is a must have!

I've always been interested in Gaudi, but was not aware of the variety and breadth of work done by other Catalonian architects around the same time. I don't know why this work is not better known, but should be studied by all who are interested in the arts--sculptors, painters, designers, musicians, and of course architects.
While it is hard not to just look at the pictures, the text is interesting (although at times dense). But I found that if I didn't get too mired down most of the essays were worthwhile, especially the one that related to art and painting. As a former art history student I was surprised by how impressed I was with many of the paintings in the book--from artists I hadn't heard of.
All in all this is a very high quality book and would be a great gift for anyone you know with an interest in art, architecture, modernism, or Spanish culture. Highly recommended.

Okay, si I'm biased. My ideal home would be something like the Farnsworth House with all the furniture designed for the Barcelona expo.
So, for me, this is an excellent book which acts as a showpiece for the selected works of the timeless brilliance of Mies van der Rohe.
The book covers his architectural, interior design and furniture design work with a fairly balanced distribution of illustrations and written content.

Mies van der Rohe's famous and often-reproduced Barcelona Pavilion, built for the 1928 World's Fair--then demolished in 1930 and reconstructed as a permanent installation in 1986--was an important building in the history of modern architecture. Known for its simple form and extravagant materials, such as marble and travertine, the Pavilion stood on a large podium alongside a pool. With its perpendicular planes that seemed to shoot out into three-dimensional space, it was considered an instant milestone for both architecture and design. (Mies created his famous Barcelona Chair to go inside of it.) According to the architect, the Pavilion also represented an equally important milestone in the joining of art and architecture, for its open-plan, "flowing space" provided the ideal environment for the display of the artwork by sculptor Georg Kolbe. The outcome of this collaboration was monumental for both artists, who went on to work together again, as well as with other collaborators in both fields.

This lovely book and its companion, "Inside Rome," are a terrific resource if you're a designer looking for inspiration. They are a sampler of unusual interiors from many different periods and styles, well photographed and nicely reproduced. The most interesting are those to which there is no public access - government buildings etc.
