Larry Wall wrote Perl and he wrote Programming Perl. Better yet, he writes amusingly and well--all of which comes across in this latest edition of the definitive guide to the language.
Like Topsy, Perl just grew, and as a result the need for a third edition came about. It's now over 1,000 pages, which it needs to be, as it performs several different duties. First, it's an introduction to the Perl language for those who are new to programming; also, it's a guide for those who are coming from other languages; and, finally, it's a Perl language reference.
Among Larry Wall's other pursuits is being a linguist, and it's perhaps for this reason that Perl is a peculiarly flexible language with many routes to achieving the same ends, as the authors ably demonstrate. It's also extensible in several ways, designed to work with many other languages. Also, as it's largely interpreted, programs written in Perl tend to run unmodified on a variety of platforms--although platform-specific Perl modules and programming practices are also discussed.
A major strength of Programming Perl is the way subject areas are approached from several directions. This constant shift of viewpoint eliminates blind spots in the reader's understanding and provides a pleasing echo of the way Perl itself can take many routes from here to there.
Because the Perl community is both knowledgeable and active, the language covers much more ground here than in the previous edition. Even if you have both previous editions, you'll want this latest version--if only for the new jokes. --Steve Patient, amazon.co.uk
Book Description
Perl is a powerful programming language that has grown in popularity since it first appeared in 1988. The first edition of this book, Programming Perl, hit the shelves in 1990, and was quickly adopted as the undisputed bible of the language. Since then, Perl has grown with the times, and so has this book. Programming Perl is not just a book about Perl. It is also a unique introduction to the language and its culture, as one might expect only from its authors. Larry Wall is the inventor of Perl, and provides a unique perspective on the evolution of Perl and its future direction. Tom Christiansen was one of the first champions of the language, and lives and breathes the complexities of Perl internals as few other mortals do. Jon Orwant is the editor of The Perl Journal, which has brought together the Perl community as a common forum for new developments in Perl. Any Perl book can show the syntax of Perl's functions, but only this one is a comprehensive guide to all the nooks and crannies of the language. Any Perl book can explain typeglobs, pseudohashes, and closures, but only this one shows how they really work. Any Perl book can say that my is faster than local, but only this one explains why. Any Perl book can have a title, but only this book is affectionately known by all Perl programmers as "The Camel." This third edition of Programming Perl has been expanded to cover version 5.6 of this maturing language. New topics include threading, the compiler, Unicode, and other new features that have been added since the previous edition.

The Definitive Guide for PERL!!!.......2007-10-06
I would not recommend this book upfront if you don't know any Perl. Read up Beginning Perl by Simon Cozens and feel around a bit. Then pick this book up and put in the effort and you WILL appreciate the power, truth and beauty about PERL.
It is not a light read... certainly wasn't for me. But at the end of it, the effort was so worth it. The book will give you several Aha moments and by the end of it, thou shalt be rewarded!!
Excellent Perl Reference.......2007-09-16
This contains a lot of useful information and examples which go above and beyond the "basics" found in the extensive Perl man-pages.
Non Fiction.......2007-09-03
A really quite good introduction and how-to guide to the whacky and very cool and useful beast that is the Perl programming language. It certainly helped me when I decided to pick up the language for some of the useful internet programming tricks that it had. A book I would definitely recommend as a purchase. Not too many you could say that about currently.
A Complete Reference, But Not For Beginners.......2007-07-16
Programming Perl, also known as "The Camel Book," is the ultimate reference guide, written by the creator of Perl, Larry Wall. As one might expect, this guide covers every nook and cranny of the Perl programming language. It's greatest strength is also it's greatest weakness: useful nuggets of information are buried everywhere throughout the text. This is a strength in that, when looking up a particular topic, you'll often stumble upon a useful morsel of information. It's a weakness in that you have to slog through often dry reading to find these hidden gems.
It should be noted that this book assumes a working knowledge of Unix, in addition to some previous programming experience. If you are new to programming, or just new to Perl, you should check out Learning Perl, Fourth Edition instead. It is a much easier read, and ranks in my mind among the most well written technical books. Programming Perl makes for a great second book, as well as a desktop reference.
Essential for lovers of Perl culture, recommended for the rest of us.......2007-07-14
Perl seems capable of evoking both rapturous adoration and abject disgust from those who are exposed to it. If your feelings are closer to the former than the latter, well, you probably own this book already, and you love it.
After all, The Camel consists of the God of Perl and two Perl demigods writing the definitive reference about Perl from top to bottom. What's not to love? In particular, if you've ever heard Larry Wall give a talk, you'll be able to spot his contributions: droll, parenthetical and punning.
For those of us who just like Perl (or even just have to work with it), it's not quite as essential as you might have been led to believe. In part this might be because the third edition is getting on a bit, and plenty of other good Perl books have emerged in the intervening time. And in part, it's because definitive tomes such as this one by definition contain large chunks that you don't need, where you'll spend most of your time just nodding and thinking 'yep, I already know that'.
But of course, there's always a few bits you didn't know, and that's where The Camel comes in handy. The first part of the book, which goes over the core of the language, is a must read in this respect. To be honest, I didn't find the explanations to be quite as cogent as what can be found elsewhere (e.g. Perl Best Practices or Advanced Perl Programming), but it's all in one place here.
In addition, beyond the core language, lots of other material is present, including: threading, details on Perl's internals, and a long list of Perl idioms and dos and don'ts. There's also the reference section, which covers the built in functions, and briefly outlines what's in the standard packages that come with Perl, which is also helpful, although in most cases I expect an internet search (or the perl man pages) is just as fast, and in the case of the standard library, provides more information.
On the one hand, I think you can get by without owning this. On the other you will not regret buying this book -- Perl has enough quirks that it's nice to have The Camel close to hand. Nice, but not essential.

Perl Hacks: Tips & Tools for Programming, Debugging, and Surviving (Hacks)
ASIN: 0596102062 |
Book Description
Perl is a versatile, powerful programming language used in a variety of disciplines, ranging from system administration to web programming to database manipulation. One slogan of Perl is that it makes easy things easy and hard things possible. Intermediate Perl is about making the leap from the easy things to the hard ones.
Originally released in 2003 as Learning Perl Objects, References, and Modules and revised and updated for Perl 5.8, this book offers a gentle but thorough introduction to intermediate programming in Perl. Written by the authors of the best-selling Learning Perl, it picks up where that book left off. Topics include:
- Packages and namespaces
- References and scoping
- Manipulating complex data structures
- Object-oriented programming
- Writing and using modules
- Testing Perl code
- Contributing to CPAN
Following the successful format of Learning Perl, we designed each chapter in the book to be small enough to be read in just an hour or two, ending with a series of exercises to help you practice what you've learned. To use the book, you just need to be familiar with the material in Learning Perl and have ambition to go further.
Perl is a different language to different people. It is a quick scripting tool for some, and a fully-featured object-oriented language for others. It is used for everything from performing quick global replacements on text files, to crunching huge, complex sets of scientific data that take weeks to process. Perl is what you make of it. But regardless of what you use Perl for, this book helps you do it more effectively, efficiently, and elegantly.
Intermediate Perl is about learning to use Perl as a programming language, and not just a scripting language. This is the book that turns the Perl dabbler into the Perl programmer.
Customer Reviews:
Good follow up to the The Llama, but poorly organised.......2007-07-14
If you've mastered The Llama, make haste to read this one. Even if you only want to do scripting with Perl, you'll eventually find you need data structures slightly more complicated than just flat arrays and hashes, and you need to know about references for that. While The Camel does contain a fair chunk of material on just this subject, it was a bit too much for me to digest after The Llama. If Intermediate Perl (aka The Alpaca) had been around for me to read, I would have had a much easier time.
Written in the same style as The Llama, this breeze through most of the rest of Perl, in particular: references, objects, packages and modules. These are the bits that you need to use Perl as a general purpose programming language, not just for scripting. In a similar pragmatic vein, it also covers how to use tools to build your own packages in the CPAN style, and there's a good chunk of material on using Test::More for unit tests. Probably the only thing missing is material on type globs and symbol tables, although hopefully, brian d foy's forthcoming Mastering Perl will fill in these gaps.
The bottom line is this is Llama part 2, and you need to read it if you want to have any hope of understanding anyone else's Perl. But I can't give it five stars. The major problem is that the material is not very well organised. At the chapter level, objects are sandwiched between modules and packages. It would have been far preferable to keep the module and package information together. As a result, the distinction between modules and packages is rather muddied, and the introduction of objects in the middle just makes things worse. Overall, I found the explanations to lack the clarity of the Llama.
A more minor complaint is that, while there are mercifully fewer annoying footnotes, the Gilligan's Island theme (if, like me, you had no exposure to this growing up, you might want to read the Wikipedia article first!) grates far sooner than the Flintstones flavour of the Llama.
That said, make this your second book on Perl. Then, _still_ don't read The Camel yet. Avail yourself of Perl Best Practices first.
Good Book For Classroom Setting.......2007-02-20
I picked up this book for a class that I was teaching at my office. The goal of the class was to train HTML/CSS/JavaScript and/or Java programmers to code in Perl since a large portion of our code base is written in Perl. Overall, I think that the book was a good choice for the class for a number of reasons.
First of all, the book is already written with a classroom setting in mind. The authors have used previous versions of the book, titled "Learning Perl Objects, References and Modules", for their own courses. This updated version benefits from all of the hours of empirical testing that it has received in the classroom. There are many thoughtful additions like having all of the chapters close to the same size. This allowed for me to assign a single chapter per session and know that I could comfortably fit the lecture and discussion of the chapter into a two-hour session. There are also exercises at the end of each chapter and answers for those exercises (with discussion) in an appendix.
This book is good for getting people just learning the language ready for the TMTOWTDI/TIMTOWTDI aspect of Perl. Take something simple like opening files... there are at least four 'standard' ways to do it. The book prepares you for all of the different versions of annoyances/features like this that show up in Perl code by walking through the evolution of the feature.
Another reason that I like this selection of book is that data files and code examples are actually available for download. I've been shocked that some of the programming books that I've gotten lately actually don't have this addition.
Finally, the course that I'm teaching is for people who probably already know how to program, at least a little, but they don't know Perl. I didn't want to drag them through all of the picky details of the language by starting with "Learning Perl" or something equivalent. This book has been a good choice for introducing programmers to Perl. I do have to stop occasionally and explain some fundamentals of the language, but not too often... maybe I just work with smart (or shy) people :)
Of course, the book isn't perfect. As odd as it seems, one of the biggest complaints that I get is over the Gilligan references that are used in all of the examples in the book. There is also some coverage of packaging modules for CPAN. This is useful, just not for the particular class that I'm teaching, so we skipped that chapter. Of course, both of these complaints are pretty weak.
In short, this is a good book, especially if you are doing a training session about Perl.
Good, but not great.......2007-02-15
I didn't like the storyline, but I did learn how to handle anonymous arrays better.
Good sequel to Learning Perl.......2007-01-27
The first edition of this book was "Learning Perl Objects, References, and Modules". I never read that previous edition, so I can't comment on how that book stacks up against this new edition. This book is intended to pick up where Learning Perl left off. Its purpose is to show you how to use Perl to write larger more complex programs. As in Learning Perl, each chapter is small enough to read in an hour or so. Each chapter ends with a series of exercises to help you practice what you've just learned, and the answers are in the appendix for your reference. You don't have to know Unix to benefit from this book. Most everything in this book applies equally well to Windows ActivePerl from ActiveState and all other modern implementations of Perl. To use this book effectively, you just need to be familiar with the material in Learning Perl and have the ambition to go further. You should read this book from beginning to end, stopping to do the exercises as you go along. The following is the structure of the book:
Chapter 1, Introduction, just goes over what you should already know and how to use the book.
Chapter 2, Intermediate Foundations, introduces some intermediate-level Perl idioms used throughout the book. These are the things that typically set apart the beginning and intermediate Perl programmers.
Chapter 3, Using Modules, is about the building blocks for Perl programs. They provide reusable subroutines, variables, and even object-oriented classes. It also looks at the basics of using modules that others have already written.
Chapter 4 introduces references, which are the basis for complex data structures, object-oriented programming (OOP), and fancy subroutine magic. They're the magic that was added between Perl version 4 and version 5 to make it all possible. A Perl scalar variable holds a single value. An array holds an ordered list of one or more scalars. A hash holds a collection of scalars as values, keyed by other scalars. Although a scalar can be an arbitrary string, which allows complex data to be encoded into an array or hash, none of the three data types are well suited to complex data interrelationships. This is a job for the reference, which enables a level of redirection that allows the same code to operate on different sets of data.
Chapter 5, References and Scoping shows how to copy and pass around references like any other scalar. At any given time, Perl knows the number of references to a particular data item. Perl can also create references to anonymous data structures and create references automatically as needed to fulfill certain kinds of operations. This chapter look at copying references and how it affects scoping and memory usage.
Chapter 6, Manipulating Complex Data Structures, starts by using the debugger to examine complex data structures and then uses Data::Dumper to show the data under programmatic control. Next, you learn to store and retrieve complex data easily and quickly using Storable, and finally you wrap up with a review of grep and map and see how they apply to complex data.
Chapter 7, Subroutine References shows how to capture behavior as an anonymous subroutine that you create dynamically and execute later. In the same way that taking a reference to an array lets you have the same code work on different arrays at different times, taking a reference to a subroutine allows the same code to call different subroutines at different times. Also, references permit complex data structures. A reference to a subroutine allows a subroutine to effectively become part of that complex data structure
Chapter 8, Filehandle References, stores filehandles in scalar variables that you can easily pass around your program or store in data structures. You've seen arrays, hashes, and subroutines passed around in references, permitting a level of indirection to solve certain types of problems. We can also store filehandles in references to create new solutions to old problems.
Chapter 9, Practical Reference Tricks, looks at optimizing sorting and dealing with recursively defined data.
Chapter 10, Building Larger Programs, looks at how to break up a program into pieces and includes some of the concerns that arise when you put those pieces back together again, or when many people work together on the same program. You learn to build larger programs by separating code into separate files and namespaces.
Chapter 11, Introduction to Objects, shows how to work with classes, method calls, inheritance, and overriding.
Chapter 12, Objects with Data, shows how to add per-instance data, including constructors, getters, and setters.
Chapter 13, Object Destruction looks at an important topic: what happens when objects go away. When the last reference to a Perl data structure goes away, Perl automatically reclaims the memory of that data structure, including destroying any links to other data. Of course, that in turn may cause Perl to destroy other ("contained") structures as well.
Chapter 14, Some Advanced Object Topics, answers the questions "Do all objects inherit from a common class?" "What if a method is missing?" "What about multiple inheritance?" or "How can I tell what sort of object I have?" and other advanced questions pertaining to objects.
Chapter 15, Exporter, shows how to decide what to export and how to create your own import routines. In Chapter 3, you learned how to use modules, some of which pulled functions into the current namespace. Now you learn how to get your own modules to do that.
Chapter 16, Writing a Distribution, shows how to package a module for sharing, including portable installation instructions. In the previous chapter, you created a fictional Island::Plotting::Maps module and built the right support for Exporter so that we could include use Island::Plotting::Maps in a program. While the resulting .pm file was useful, it wasn't very practical. There is more work to do before you can share your work, whether that means simply installing it yourselves on another machine or giving it to someone else to use.
Chapter 17, Essential Testing, covers testing your code to ensure it does what you want it to do. As briefly described in Chapter 16, a distribution contains a testing facility that you can invoke from make test. This allows you to write and run tests during development and maintenance, and it also lets your end user verify that the module works in their environment. You should look at "Perl Testing: A Developer's Notebook" for in-depth coverage.
Chapter 18, Advanced Testing, gives you a taste of some of the more popular test modules. These modules are usually not part of the Perl standard distribution (unlike Test::More) and you'll need to install them yourself. You'll learn how to test complex aspects of code and also meta-code subjects such as documentation and test coverage.
Chapter 19, Contributing to CPAN, shows how you can contribute to the Perl community at large. The mechanism for sharing your work is called the Comprehensive Perl Archive Network (CPAN), which has thousands of different modules.
I found this book to be a seamless continuation of "Learning Perl". Everything is explained very well and there are plenty of examples. It really is ideal for self study. Having the answers at the back of the book was helpful, too. There are not just a bunch of pieces of code as answers, but good explanations as to how and why you would take a particular path in solving an exercise. Highly recommended, especially to the self-taught.
Good step up for Perl programmers.......2006-07-20
For Perl programmers looking to make more of the language than just scripting this is the ideal 'step up' book. Object Oriented features of Perl are covered well. Writing and publishing CPAN modules is also covered, as are unit testing concepts.
If you want to expand your Perl world view this is an ideal second book to go along with the classic Programming Perl.

Book Description
THE CAMEL BOOKMOBILE is a fictional tale of an American librarian who leaves Brooklyn to work for a relief organization in Africa that sends books on the backs of camels to forgotten villages. Her intentions are entirely pure but, when the bookmobile causes a feud among the nomadic tribe it aims to help, she realizes her good deeds may come with a high price.
The actual Camel Bookmobile made its first run almost a decade ago. Three dromedaries trudged through arid northeastern Kenya to bring a library to settlements so remote they had become nearly invisible. Lacking roads, clean water, and food, those who inhabited these villiages had never been to school much less held a book in their hands. The books that came to them were rare and precious gifts, allowing them to briefly escape the reality of squalor and destitution.
Appealing to the fans of Reading Lolita in Tehran and The Bookseller of Kabul, The Camel Bookmobile captures a time and place that is unknown to many but relevant to all.

A Moveable Feast.......2007-09-22
This book succeeds on a variety of levels. It is first of all enjoyable fiction. The factual quotes before chapters lend a bleak reality to the stark conditions of the environment wherein the story transpires. It is, however, the richness of the characterization that makes the novel soar. Each character sings in a proud triumphant voice, as the bookmobile enters, leaves and then returns to the complexity of African life.
beautiful!.......2007-07-02
It's been a long time since the characters in a story have continued to live on for me after I've finished the book. This is one of those stories. As a Returned Peace Corps Volunteer, I could both identify with Fi Sweeney and ponder the larger questions of what happens when one tries to bring progress to another culture. No easy answers, but lots to think about, long after you've finished reading.
Beautifully Accomplished........2007-06-09
I bought this book as a recommendation from a friend as he knew my interests and thought this would be perfect. I wasn't in the least bit disappointed. Hamilton unravels the tale of Fiona Sweeney, a modern librarian from the states, who has a mission and a goal: bringing education to the tribal peoples of Africa.
With multiple twists and turns to the plot that I didn't foresee when I first picked up the book, I was pleasantly surprised. Hamilton's writing is not only beautiful and captivating, but also brings forth a sense of importance. It's a book with awareness and a deep spiritual connection that left me with a 'united' feeling. I was both enamored and amused by the supporting cast, but also left with a feeling of kinship with Fi who has a strong belief in what she does. She's the type of woman who wont go down without a fight, strong but still emotional. She has a certain need to fulfill this mission and even when turned away, she is assertive and determined in her belief.
From the dusky, romantic setting of Africa to the sense of balance in Fi Sweeney's heart, this book was a delight. The awareness of the subject matter is brought into strong focus, yet still maintains a balance of wonderful writing. A true success.
A remarkable achievement.......2007-06-05
In The Camel Bookmobile, Masha Hamilton tackles important philosophical and cultural questions with sensitivity and grace. This book is anything but abstract, though. Librarian Fiona Sweeney; her Kenyan counterpart, Mr. Abasi; and especially the members of the Mididima tribe are complex, intelligent, passionate individuals whom we come to care about and root for, and whose fragile future assumes heartbreaking importance.
Not as good as the real thing!.......2007-05-31
Although the real Camel Book Drive that is a new and wonderful charity organization now going on in Africa is an exciting event that brings books to the people of that country, the novelization of the story is not as riveting. I struggle to see why other reviewers are raving about this boring and disastrous tale. Perhaps they feel the actual real story of the bookmobile merits giving the book flying colors. I was expecting so much more from this promising title and felt very misled by the descriptive blurb on the front inside jacket flap. I was expecting to hear how these books and authors were going to change the lives of these people, I was waiting to see how the people would react and wonder about the various stories that are brought to them across the dry dusty desert by a caravan of camels. Not so. We have one trip, the first trip, into one village, that soon causes trouble and disaster to the future of the camel book mobile. The entire rest of the book is one long affair with our heroine the librarian to straighten out the problem one villager has caused. The reader then has to suffer through the rest of the novel hearing about the trials and tribulations and petty social and family ordeals of the locals, instead of the promised literary input the books are supposedly suppose to create for these villages. I truly struggled to finish it and when I finally turned the last page I felt I had wasted the entire day that it took to read this slow and disappointing story.

Baldacci Outdoes himself!.......2007-10-04
This is a don't miss book. Not only has Baldacci created a plot with such twists and turns as to make the reader absolutely giddy, he has created characters that are at once believable and quite amusing. This page-turner grabs the reader from the first paragraph and keeps the reader turning pages until the last word.
The Camel Club plods like one.......2007-09-22
Nobody loves a conspiracy theory more than me. But not this one. Mainly because its not a thriller so much as a thinly disguised attempt to tell us we really are the Great Satan, and that Americans would be better off with a Socialist government, and that peace is attainable only if we give half of our wealth to the Muslims of the world.
First, the book. It seems that there's a conspiracy within Homeland Security, and that only 4 or 5 well placed people there can actually dupe the whole multi-billion dollar system. Ok. I've had to suspend belief beyond this chidish assumption, so let's soldier on. Then, we plod along for almost 400 pages, where we learn the following:
1. The world's resources should be doled out equally to the world's inhabitants like a plate of Grandma's tasty pastries, because she'll never make another one, and that's the only fair thing to do.
2. Good decent Muslims only came to hate us because of Iraq.
3. But for the first two points, there would be peace in the middle east.
4. Mentally deranged geniuses and hobos can save the world, without telling anyone.
5. Our government officials, gloating over our superiority, are kept from raining nuclear weapons on the world without provocation only by the slimmest of fortuitous events.
Good lord.
The Camel Club has an unnecessarily confusing beginning, a tediously, plodding middle and finishes so abruptly and implausibly we're left with the impression Balducci either tired of writing or his editors forced him into a timeline.
In the last 100 pages, we're introduced to new characters of such malicious, evil stupidity that the whole book could have been written about them. Here they are only used to bring some strange and bizarre ending.
In the Camel Club, we give Balducci virtually 600 pages of our precious time to prove why Americans are at fault for 9/11 because we really are the Great Satan. He does a terrible job, and ends up revealing the argument for the tragic parody it really is.
I've tried to like David Balducci. I really have. But really, this guy gets rich doing this? Please. And in the middle of a war yet. What an insulting time to display his insidious and childish sermonizing.
First Book in the Camel Club Series.......2007-08-26
David Baldacci attended law school at the University of Virginia, and went on to work as a trial lawyer, and later as a corporate lawyer, in Washington, D.C. He is now a full-time writer whose best selling novels include Absolute Power, Total Control, The Winner, The Simple Truth and Saving Faith. He lives in Virginia with his wife and two children.
The Camel Club could not be said to have a blossoming membership, in fact four forgotten and exccentric people is the sum total of the clubs membership. It exists close to Washington, D.C., has no power as such. The goal of the members is to find the "truth" behind their country's actions.
The aging leader of the group has no known past (recorded that is) and has taken the name "Oliver Stone." Day and night this group of four study wild conspiracy theories, current events and the machinations of the government of the day, hoping to discover some truth that will hold America's politicians accountable to its citizens and after witnessing a shocking murder the Club is drawn headfirst into a plot that threatens the very security of the nation . . .
In the Camel Club the author paints a picture of the world that could be all too true in the future, with a few powerful people having the opportunity to stop the chaos.
Just curious..........2007-08-18
When Hemingway met with the man referred to as just the Arab in Frankfurt, were there any leftist talking points the Arab missed? I literally laughed when he said, "You have only 5% of the world's population but consume 25% of the energy." That was one of about twenty liberal talking points he managed to get out in about two pages. I felt embarrassed for the author after reading that exchange.
The Camel Club.......2007-08-09
Great characters - a story that spins and twist and is so well resolved in the end. I want to read about these four main charaters ("The Camel Club") again

- Offers a comprehensive guide to implementing CAMEL.
- Gives a complete picture, including the network entities & data flows involved.
- Describes and explains the four CAMEL phases and their aspects.

Customer Reviews:
Must buy for all Telecom Engineers working on CAMEL.......2007-08-24
Reading CAMEL from the specs has always been a nightmare for me with very basic understanding of IN, but after going through the book all my fundas have become clear and now I am able to relate everything from the Specs. This book is the only book I could find on this topic and author has very clearly explained the topic starting from scratch.
Absolute must-read for CAMEL'ers.......2007-01-12
By far the best book i have come across which attempts to provide a comprehensive understanding of CAMEL's origins, CAMEL's present and future roles. Author's excellent narrative skills coupled with easy-to-follow logical flow makes this a personal favourite. Its a must-have for folks who want to learn CAMEL networks or those who want to refresh their knowledge about CAMEL networks or those who want to augment gaps in their understanding of CAMEL networks. The book, in my humble opinion, has both, depth and breadth... a very rare quality in itself...
disappointed.......2006-12-16
This book appears to completely omit the possibility of direct gsmSCF to gsmSRF communication, This is especially serious when this is the first gsmSRF scenario discussed and diagrammed by other authors and the definitive 3GPP TS 03.78 & 3G TS 29.078 standards. This interface, present in CAMEL from phase 2, is being used in the new and interesting CAMEL services such as CRBT. This is a basic and serious omission and has undermined my faith in the rest of the book.
The definitive book about CAMEL.......2006-07-13
This book is a must read for anyone planning and/or developing CAMEL based applications. I recommend it to everyone I know that works within SS7/IN/WIN/CAMEL. It is a great reference and guide to more information that may be found within the standards.

Book Description
The Camel Knows the Way is a candid account of an extraordinary and ultimately thrilling quest for God. Lorna Kelly's odyssey from middle class British school girl to glamorous, New York Sotheby's auctioneer to volunteer in the slums of Calcutta is a trek that is sobering, inspiriing and breathtakingly compelling. En route Kelly confronts alcoholism, divorce, a growing sense of spiritual disquiet and her own "dark night." What emerges from that spiritual thirst is a buoyant and compelling affirmation of our common humanity. -- Tom Stretton.
(This is the second and revised edition which includes new photographs and an Epilogue explaining why the book was self-published as well as a reporting on Mother Teresa's Beatificaton, October 2003.)

Spellbinding.......2007-05-07
Extraordinary spiritual and personal journey. The author brilliantly transported me to a world totally unknown to me and I was hooked. The author allows the reader to witness the loving and nurturing relationship she developed with Mother Theresa.. It was an honor to be a part of the lives of these two woman, if only for a brief time.
Beautiful.......2007-01-26
This is a lovely read of a beautiful journey, one from British schoolgirl to Sotheby's auctioneer to volunteer in Calcutta, India. Her tale puts a face on a spiritual quest for Jesus which is inspiring, uplifting, and encouraging. Great story-telling and a wonderful and rare insight into Mother Theresa and her world. Thoroughly enjoyed and highly recommend.

This is one of the best books I have read in many years. It was inspiring, sad, funny and has changed my life. What a gift Lorna has given to many.
If you want a genuine book from the heart, this is the one!.......2003-08-02
I was very touched by this true story of an intelligent person struggling to come to terms with her past, her family, grief, alcoholism, the material world and all the ills of everyday life. Beautifully and artfully written. The writer is no saint but, after one reads this book, her pure heart in unquestioned. Her sainthood (if I may use the word) is in her humanity and divine inclination to do good. She is like you and I struggling to exist and make a difference in this tragic world. In spite of all the material conforts and easy life, she is the poorer of the poor. I highly recommend this book to anybody looking for a good read to inspire both the heart and the spirit. God bless you Lorna! I just wish there were more books like yours out there!
An Outstanding Chronicle of Amazing People.......2002-10-09
This wonderful book tells of Lorna Kelly's spiritual journey to improve her conscious contact with God. While some may seek God in churches or enlightening books, Ms. Kelly went to a different source: Mother Theresa. Her descriptions of the poor of Calcutta make any life in this country seem opulent by comparison, but they are told with un-whitewashed reality and truth. The descriptions of how the sisters there minister to the poor and sick are stories of tremendous courage that could only stem from unwavering faith. Interwoven with her experiences with Mother Theresa, Ms. Kelly describes her own life, her recovery from alcoholism and her unconventional career. The story is not told without excellent humor and more than a bit of gentle sarcasm. I can't recommend this book enough; in the end it has little to do with practicing religion and everything to do with committment to a better world and the faith to make it happen.

The Sixth Book in a Terrific Series.......2007-06-20
Elizabeth Peters was born and brought up in Illinois and earned her Ph.D. in Egyptology from the University of Chicago's famed Oriental Institute. Peters was named Grand Master at the inaugural Anthony Awards in 1986 and Grand Master by the Mystery Writers of America at the Edgar Awards in 1998. She lives in a historic farmhouse in western Maryland.
The Amelia Peabody books may or may not be an acquired taste, personally I love them. They are set in Victorian times when there were still very strict rules of etiquette and polite behaviour was the norm. Although most of the books are set in Egypt, in the desert under very trying conditions and extremely hot weather the `English' way of life was still expected to be adhered to, sometimes with quite hilarious consequences.
Amelia Peabody is Elizabeth Peters' best loved and brilliant creation, a thoroughly Victorian feminist who takes the stuffy world of archaeology by storm with her no nonsense dress sense and forthright opinions.
Egyptologist Amelia Peabody along with her husband Emerson, perhaps the most famous archaeologist of his day and their son Ramses are in the Sudan searching for Viscount Blacktower's son and his new bride. As trouble follows them everywhere it is not long before they are caught up in a web of deceit and treachery. Once again their survival depends upon Peabody's powers of deduction, Ramses ability to look like one of the natives and Emerson's ability to frighten anybody and everybody who gets in his way.
the best of the best.......2006-02-12
I am a huge fan of Elizabeth Peters - have read and own all in the series - to me, this book is the turning point in the series - going to search for a lost land and finding it, and introduces Nefret to our cast. Who turns out to be a major character in the series. My favorite part of this book is when Emerson is imprisoned and in chains and he busts out of them! Of course, Ramses, who was a great character as a child and subsequently as an adult, is around and Peabody is everyone's sweetheart -
Adventure, romance, Egyptology, this book has it all -
A great starting point for the rest of the series, or an incentive to read from the start.
GOOD GAD, THE BEST SO FAR!.......2006-02-11
Thanks to AMAZON'S recommended books and reviews, I discovered this delightful series. Elizabeth Peters does a wonderful job combining mystery, history and archeology into a fast paced story that entertains the reader. Then of course we can't forget the romance (implied, naturally).
In my opinion, THE LAST CAMEL DIED AT NOON is the best of the first six books in the series (the first one did get me hooked). The concept of finding a lost city hidden in the middle of the desert was brilliant. We are also introduced to Nefret who not only becomes the Emerson's adopted daughter but an integral part of the rest of the Peabody series.
And, I am absolutely thrilled to discover a series of books where there are at least 20 already written. I don't have to wait for the next one; I can just go straight through!!
Another Great Amelia Peabody Novel.......2005-09-24
Barbara Michaels hit the jackpot when she invented Amelia Peabody Emerson, and this novel just increases the appeal of the entire family. For those of us who love Egyptian history, adventure novels, and romance, this series can't be beat. Thanks, Ms. Michaels!

Away Laughing on a Fast Camel review.......2007-04-25
Away Laughing on a Fast Camel is the fifth book in the Georgia Nicholson series. Georgia, a British teenager full of gorgeosity and attitude continues the cunning chronicles that are her diaries, full of red-bottom-osity, love-stricken cats, and a tres mad toddler. On top of all that, Georgia's love interest, the lead singer of the "Stiff Dylans", Robbie, (aka the Sex God) is off to Kiwi-a-go-go land, and Georgia's got the Cosmic Horn for their new singer, Masimo.
Libby, Georgia's toddler sister, is quite literally mad. One minute she's trying to kiss you, the next she's hitting you and calling you "cheeky monkey". You never know what's going to happen with that crazy bugger whether she's snuggling a turnip or running around in the nuddy-pants. I love the absolutely outrageous antics she gets up to, and it's always laugh out loud hilarious.
I totally recommend this book for girls in their teenage years. Some topics may be too awkward for younger girls. I love this book because there's a laugh on every page. Also, it's a great source for outrageous British slang. Georgia is always on a wacky adventure, so you can never put it down or else you will have tres snog withdrawel. This book is fabbity-fab-fab and you won't be able to read it just once!!
True Confessions of Georgia Nicolson is FAB!.......2007-01-20
I love these books. I started getting them on book on tape at the library and I enjoy them sooo much. I really want to get them at the book store so that I can read them over and over again!
Away Laughing on a Fast Camel.......2006-11-30
While S.G.(Robbie) is off in Kiwi-a-gogo,to snog the local sheep, Georgia is left on her all aloney, on her owney! But never fear, a new, and BETTER S.G. is on his way! And this one has an Italian accent! Eith Georgia, who knows what could go wrong? Oh, yeah! EVERYTHING! With Dave the laugh coaching her along, this is one of the funniest books in the searies!
Another entry in the fabbity-fab life of Georgia Nicolson.......2006-10-29
With the Sex God away in Kiwi-a goo-goo land snogging marsupials and only writing to Georgia about thermal activity, Georgia is fully into her sadosity phase. That is until the new gorgy singer for the Stiff Dylans shows up. Suffering from a flash return of red bottomisity Georgia pulls out all the stops to snare the Sex Meister. Unfortunately this includes having her eyelids accidentally glue together with her boy entrancers at a most inopportune moment. Lucky for Georgia she always can turn to her Master of the Horn instructor, Dave the Laugh for a bit of advice (and a happy round of snogging).
The more I read of Georgia Nicolson's adventures the more I find myself chuckling. I did miss Angus' input a little, but the parts featuring the new little addition to the family in the form of Angus' cross-eyed offspring made up for it. I thoroughly enjoyed this story and am anxious to see what will happen to Georgia when she reaches Hamburger-a-goo-goo land in the next book.
An okay book, not exciting........2006-10-21
Away Laughing on a Fast Camel
By Louise Rennison
Realistic Fiction
This book, Away Laughing on a Fast Camel, is a story about the feelings and thoughts of a girl named Georgia Nicholson, who lives in Britain. She has a crazy family consisting of a mom a dad and a 3-year-old sister. Georgia seems not to get along with her family for the most part, and relies a lot on her friends. The book states all of her feelings toward school, family, friends, and the world. As Georgia grows into adolescence, hormones often take over and make for a funny scene more than once as the story progresses. In this book, Georgia is writing a diary. Diary form fits this story very well because the author can go into more detail about Georgia's feelings than if it was told in 3rd person. The journal entries are entered at completely random times, Georgia might write 10 days in a row, and then not write another for a week or so. That, I think was my only problem with the authors writing style. Because of the randomness of the entry time, if I missed one or two dates, I might think it was September and it would turn out to be November. I wish the author had written in a more clear, organized way. I didn't enjoy this book a ton, but I liked it okay. I feel like the plot is not complex enough to captivate the reader, or grab their attention. In the previous books in this series, a lot went on and a new problem occurred each time. In this novel however, I was often bored and felt like many pages were there just to make the book longer. Over all, I'd give this book, three and a half stars.

Customer Reviews:
The Ideal Study Bible.......2007-05-30
I received my NLT Study Bible with the beautiful tan leather cover about 3 weeks ago. I love reading it, as I find the NLT (New Living Translation) so easy to absorb and recall later. The notes and various study guides and commentaries really bring the Bible to life and will be very helpful for the new Christian, as well as those of us that have walked with The Lord for many years. I only have one "tiny" issue...that being as a 55-year old with not-so-perfect vision I find the print a wee bit small, but still very legible. There are large print editions, but they weigh a ton (bought one for my wife) and I wanted something a bit more manageable. Great version, great tranlation into modern American english, and a very handsome tan leather cover.
Perfect for those who have a hard time understanding.......2007-05-11
For some reason or other, usually the first bible that people are introduced to is the King James Bible. While a beatuiful translation, it is very difficult to understand since the language does not reflect the current times. With that being said, even modern translations can sometimes be confusing unless you are a bible scholar and know how to study and read the bible. You can sometimes get caught up in the story and not understand the deeper meaning.
This bible is perfect for those who are new to the bible, and who thirst to understand the real meaning of the principles and wisdom that overflows from every word.
As many times as I have read the bible I have often struggled to understand the true meaning, thus losing the opportunity to apply what I have read to my personal walk. However, the notes and learning tools in this bible has brought on a fresh conversation in mind. I can understand better, and make my own discoveries. My relationship with God is moving to a higher dimension because I can hear what He is saying to me. It all makes so much sense. After understanding and really grasping, you can really apreciate God's sovereignty and the perfect wisdom of His word.
If you have ever wished to pull the same application and meaning from the bible as your pastor does when teaching, then this bible will help you on your way. Do not be discouraged by others who may say that this translation is not authentic, or if some of the descriptions are not theologically correct. Just allow the Holy Spirit to speak to you, and you will get you what you need. Remember, its about your personal relationship with your Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, that is important. Any way that you grow closer to Him should be exploited at all costs. This bible will definitely help.
The Best!.......2006-11-09
This is the NLT Life App Study Bible in Camel/Camel Leatherlike. First of all, the colour of this Bible is fantastic---actual eye candy for me, so out of all the other Life App Bibles, this one drew me. I like these colourful Leatherlike editions, and they were made in South Korea, which means that the bindings are sewn, and will last. The ribbon-marker is a decent length. The translation is very, very well done, and professional. Now, remember, this is not a 'literal', or 'Formal Equivalent' translation. It is 'Dynamic Equivalence' or, it translates the thoughts of the Biblical writers. With that in mind, the New Living Translation is a re-do of Ken Taylor's Living Bible Paraphrased, which, in my mind, was the most exciting and riveting Bible there was. The NLT is much tighter, and can be used for study. The notes are superb, as well as the character studies, which inform very well about different Biblical personages. The only thing I do not like about this Bible is the red-letter text in the New Testament. It almost makes the red-letter verses seem more important than the others, which is not good. On a practical basis, it is very glaring. I wish Bible publishers would publish just the black-letter text. This Bible is also not a lightweight. It's a good 2400 pages. But, all in all, this is indeed an edition to have. And the NLT is a great, great read. No seventeenth-century English to have to translate. And the colour on this one is a knockout.
Very good for helping make sense of the Bible.......2006-02-18
I love this Bible. I love the Lord but struggled with reading his word. I prayed about it...now with this Bible and by reading out loud (so I don't daydream) I have finally found a way to enjoy and understand God's word for me!
Excellent Bible.......2006-02-14
This Bible is wonderful! It's written in language that is easy to understand. Many people give up on trying to study the Bible because the language is so different from the way we speak now. You won't have that problem with the New Living Translation, and the notes are so helpful. Whenever I'm unclear about a verse or the context, I check the notes, and usually they help me to understand the meaning. They also help me to understand traditions of the time and meanings that were implied to the readers of the time. Whether you've been a Christian for 50 years, or you're only thinking of trying to read the Bible for the first time, or you're anywhere in between, this Bible is a great choice!

Great characters - a story that spins and twist and is so well resolved in the end. I want to read about these four main charaters ("The Camel Club") again
