Proteins are an integral part of molecular and cellular structure and function and are probably the most purified type of biological molecule. In order to elucidate the structure and function of any protein it is first necessary to purify it. Protein purification techniques have evolved over the past ten years with improvements in equipment control, automation, and separation materials, and the introduction of new techniques such as affinity membranes and expanded beds. These developments have reduced the workload involved in protein purification, but there is still a need to consider how unit operations linked together to form a purification strategy, which can be scaled up if necessary. The two Practical Approach books on protein purification have therefore been thoroughly updated and rewritten where necessary. The core of both books is the provision of detailed practical guidelines aimed particularly at laboratory scale purification. Information on scale-up considerations is given where appropriate. The books are not comprehensive but do cover the major laboratory techniques and common sources of protein. Protein Purification Techniques focuses on unit operations and analytical techniques. It starts with an overview of purification strategy and then covers initial extraction and clarification techniques. The rest of the book concentrates on different purification methods with the emphasis being on chromatography. The final chapter considers general scale-up considerations. Protein Purification Applications describes purification strategies from common sources: mammalian cell culture, microbial cell culture, milk, animal tissue, and plant tissue. It also includes chapters on purification of inclusion bodies, fusion proteins, and purification for crystallography. A purification strategy that can produce a highly pure single protein from a crude mixture of proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, and cell debris to is a work of art to be admired. These books (available individually or as a set)are designed to give the laboratory worker the information needed to undertake the challenge of designing such a strategy.

Chiral Intermediates presents the chemical professional with a comprehensive listing of over 4700 available chiral chemicals including specific data of interest for each entry in the listing. Its companion volume, Chiral Drugs presents the same detailed information for over 2000 chiral drugs.

The 'Chiral Pool' of readily available, relatively inexpensive chiral compounds has been expanding at a rapid rate as more and more products are produced in large quantities at economical prices. New developments in various technologies for isolating, preparing, and purifying chiral materials have greatly increased the opportunities for utilizing optically pure compounds in commercial applications. Part II presents entries for 4700 commercially available chiral compounds. For each main entry, the chemical name and a list of trade names and synonyms is provided; the CAS Registry Number, the European Inventory of Existing Commercial Chemical Substances (EINECS) number, and the Merck Index (12th edition) number are given when available. The physical properties, including specific rotation, of each compound are described and indicated applications are presented. The structure of nearly every compound is provided, and the manufacturers and suppliers of the compounds are also given. Indexes, including a master index of names and synonyms and an index of custom manufacturing services for production of chiral compounds, are appended.

We have used successfully the "Handbook of Radioactivity Analysis" as a reference for training courses on Liquid Scintillation Analysis. The material in the book has been useful for course participants from a wide spectrum of fields including the biochemical, nuclear and environmental sciences, and health physics. The sections on Semiconductor Detectors for those interested in radiation spectral analysis, and Radionuclide Imaging for researchers using electronic autoradiography in the biosciences are also packed with lots of practical information. The book is highly recommended as a reference for anyone who uses radioisotopes as tracers in research or must analyze radioisotopes in all types of media including low-levels in the environment.

The text is very readable. Many illustrations and tables throughout the book provide useful information. Hundreds of cited references and state-of-the-art concepts and procedures are included. Even the most experienced and knowledgeable scientists in the field should find the book useful. I would highly recommend this book. It is clear, concise and helpful. One of the beat featurs is the "Additional Resources" section, which is full of references, links, etc. to other, equally helpful sources of information. The authors are up-to-date with all the new develpments, including APPI, which has only been introduced very recently.

If you only buy one LC/MS resource buy this one!
