      Book Description

In this feminist investigation into the art of preaching—one of the oldest and least studied rhetorical traditions—Roxanne Mountford explores the relationship between bodies, space, race, and gender in rhetorical performance and American Protestant culture. Refiguring delivery and physicality as significant components of the rhetorical situation, The Gendered Pulpit: Preaching in American Protestant Spaces examines the strategies of three contemporary women preachers who have transgressed traditions, rearranged rhetorical space, and conquered gender bias to establish greater intimacy with their congregations.

Mountford’s examinations of the rhetoric inherent in preaching manuals from 1850 to the present provide insight into how “manliness” has remained a central concept in American preaching since the mid-nineteenth century. The manuals illustrate that the character, style, method of delivery, and theological purpose of preachers focused on white men and their cultural standing, leaving contemporary women preachers searching for ways to accommodate themselves to the physicality of preaching.

Three case studies of women preachers who have succeeded or failed in rearranging rhetorical space provide the foundation for the volume. These contemporary examples have important implications for feminist theology and also reveal the importance of gender, space, and bodies to studies of rhetoric in general. Mountford explores the geographies of St. John’s Lutheran Church and the preaching of Rev. Patricia O’Connor who reformed rhetorical space through the delivery of her sermons. At Eastside United Church of Christ, Mountford shows, Rev. Barbara Hill employed narrative style and prophetic utterance in the tradition of black preaching to address gender bias and institute change in her congregation. The final case study details the experiences of Pastor Janet Moore and her struggles at Victory Hills United Methodist Church, where the fractured congregation could not be united even with Pastor Moore’s focus on theological purpose and invention strategies.

Author Jacob Schifter, PhD provides an eye-opening account into a subject matter that is too often ignored in Latino culture. Schifter utilizes both quantitative and qualitative research methods into uncovering this phenomenon in Costa Rica. A qualitative scholar myself, it was these participant's accounts that I read directly (some funny, some very sad). Schifter makes a good argument stating that these participants experiences of childhood sexual abuse are what dictates these participants current sexuality as adults. (Can't say I agree 100% with this, but it is a convincing argument nonetheless. Also, while I recognize that this an all too important work I question if this work really reflects the attitudes of all of Latin Society).

Schifter uncovers locations for public sexual activity in Costa Rica. The difference between Cacheros and Locusts. (Cacheros are male prostitutes that are not considered homosexual as long as they aren't penetrated; Locusts utilize their sexual allure to attract paying male customers and often rob or murder them). Rounding out the chapter Schifter shows the attitudes of police officers toward gay Latino men, which is a direct reflection of the country's own homophobia and hatred.

5 out of 5 stars Interesting and thought provoking..........2003-06-10

This little tomb of knowledge provides anyone interested in Latino studies, sexuality studies, queer studies, sociology, cultural anthropology and very intimate and academic view of Public Sex within the macho dominated Latino culture and sub-culture.

Written towards an educated and/or academic audience, this book offers insight into the sexual norms, abnormalities, practices, taboos, alternative lifestyles and distinct culture of sex.

This book is highly recommended for anyone working within the HIV/AIDS Prevention, Care, & Treatment field and should be required reading for students of Latino (Ethnic/Area) studies.

      Book Description

As hoteliers design zero-gravity hotel suites for out-of-this-world unions and with the first honeymoon in space already scheduled, this provocative account reveals the truth about romantic rendezvous in Earth's orbit and beyond as well as the advantages and difficulties of having sex in space. Questions the space agencies are too embarrassed to discuss—such as Has anyone "done it" in space? What will happen to the first baby conceived in space? and Have astronauts and cosmonauts practiced "docking maneuvers" while in orbit?—are thoughtfully answered, while science-fiction myths about interstellar intercourse are dispelled. From chemistry to psychology, this exploration runs the reproductive and sexual gamut, from lust and sexual mechanics to conception, pregnancy, and birth in low-gravity situations.

5 out of 5 stars Leaves The Reader Thinking.......2007-03-29

Sex in space was a fun and interesting book to read. Once you get past the giggle factor, you realize that this book actually discusses serious issues to consider for long term habitation in space. We consider such topics as relations in space, as well the potential consequences of reproduction. What if a child was born in zero gee and lived his entire life with little or no gravity? These are the types of topics that NASA would be discussing if they were actually serious about long duration missions or colonization of other planets. Sex in Space is an interesting read and provokes a lot of thoughts and questions about our future in space.

        Book Description

A largely unexplored area, this is an innovative and original examination of bisexual spaces as places that are defined by both geographical boundaries and cultural significance. Hemmings applies the ideas of queer theory as well as social and cultural geography in her fascinating investigation into the spaces and places of bisexual life. Specifically focusing on Northhampton, MA and San Francisco, she draws on interviews with community members and the town histories showing how and why they have developed into safe places for the gay, lesbian, and bisexual communities. By mapping out a space of bisexuality, Bisexual Spaces provides a new and provocative understanding of the concept.

        -- Archives of Sexual Behavior

Male homosexual activity in public and semipublic locations is a central but seldom explored dimension of gay culture around the world. The majority of existing research emphasizes the impersonality of such erotic interaction and underscores the element of danger involved. While never denying the danger of anonymous public sex in the age of AIDS, the contributors to Public Sex/Gay Space go beyond narrow moralisms about the need to regulate unsafe sexual practices to discuss the significance of sex in public. William Leap has brought together contributions from such fields as anthropology, sociology, literary criticism, and history to reinvigorate the discussion on this issue, with twelve essays providing a more nuanced portrait of why public sexual activity is such an integral part of gay culture. The authors present rich ethnographic snapshots of male sex in public places--many drawn from interviews with participants or, in some instances, the authors' personal experiences.Contributors investigate a broad cultural spectrum of gay sexual space and activity: in a public park in contemporary Hanoi, at the beachfront community of New York's Fire Island, and in nineteenth-century Amsterdam, for example. They explore issues such as visibility and secrecy, as well as economic status and social class, and interrogate the historical trajectories through which certain locations come to be favored sites for sexual encounters. Together, they offer insight into the ways in which public sex calls into question the very line that divides "public" from "private."

The most important lesson from this book is that there is no such thing as "privacy" for gay sex.A few chapters are mystifying (Hollister's and Lane') but there are fascinating chapters on cruising in Hanoi (Aaronson), straight-identified men's wider conception of "private" than gay men's (Leap), historical explorations of 19th-century Netherlands (van der Meer)and 1950s Montrel (Higgins), and -- far and away the most graphic -- Stephen Murray's demonstration that gay men differ in their responses to and valuations of being observed having sex.

First off, the cover. i'm walking home one day and bam, the cover screams at you. white type on red background. PUBLIC LOVE. i'm thinking, "public love?" where do i sign up?

in any case, i read it and boy am i dissapointed. sure there were pics. but not a stitch pf public love to be found. granted, i mean, i got the whole use-your-imagination thing they were going for, but really, how 'bout a little something for the effort, fellas? regardless, i start reading and what do i find? basically the story of my life. doing it here. there. everywhere. you name it. by book's end, i'm on the phone calling chicks i haven't called in like, years. ok, so that's a lie, i called 'em last week. the point is, it's a good book. quick. fun. and it doesn't waste any time.

in other words, it's like the title itself.

public love, i've got two words for you...

        go public.

4 out of 5 stars Not your typical coffee-table book.......1999-09-26

This book is a great conversation piece and a revealing study of human nature at its most primal, presented as a series of confessionals told in the words of the participants themselves. The book is earthy and immediate, its narratives short, sometimes shocking, but always interesting. The pictures that accompany the text are great also. A recommended read.

5 out of 5 stars Provocative and smart insight into sexual adventure.......1999-09-22

This book is so much more than simply about people having sex in public. The stories are intensely personal, told in the participant's own words, and the descriptions of the events are filled with fascinating detail of the moment - emotion, place, time, environment. By revealing these details, the participants reveal much about themselves as human beings, and that makes the sex even more intriguing. The slyly banal photos that accompany the stories are documentary and devoid of any people, like snapshots of the places taken the day after by the participant's themselves. Public Love exposes sex as inextricably a part of a greater adventure called life.

        Book Description

Gilded Age cities offered extraordinary opportunities to women--but at a price. As clerks, factory hands, and professionals flocked downtown to earn a living, they alarmed social critics and city fathers, who warned that self-supporting women were just steps away from becoming prostitutes. With in-depth research possible only in a mid-sized city, Sharon E. Wood focuses on Davenport, Iowa, to explore the lives of working women and the prostitutes who shared their neighborhoods.

The single, self-supporting women who migrated to Davenport in the years following the Civil War saw paid labor as the foundation of citizenship. They took up the tools of public and political life to assert the respectability of paid employment and to confront the demon of prostitution. Wood offers cradle-to-grave portraits of individual girls and women--both prostitutes and "respectable" white workers--seeking to reshape their city and expand women's opportunities. As Wood demonstrates, however, their efforts to rewrite the sexual politics of the streets met powerful resistance at every turn from men defending their political rights and sexual power.

4 out of 5 stars Revelations about Davenport in the Gilded Age.......2007-07-03

My godson is taking his orals for his PhD, and as a requirement, was told to read this, among 100 other assigned books. As he knew I was a Davenport native, he thought I might enjoy reading this. As a female, I found it especially fascinating as it deals mostly with the status of women, both prostitutes and women who owned small businesses, worked as clerks and in other professions, in the Gilded Age. I had no idea that prostition was once legalized in Davenport and such establishements were licensed. I also was surprised to learn how the German influence led to widespread flauting of Prohibition. I had gone to the Lend-A-Hand club as a small girl after school, and reading the history of that venerable institution was really heartening. My grandfather ran a Shell Service station at the base of the Government Bridge and it was amazing to read how that area was a hotbed of vice from 1880-1920.

I bought this book for my mother, who grew up in Davenport, and who is now 90. She knew many of the names in the book, attended school with one of the girls, and was amazed to hear all this come to life. Many of the facts and stories were told her by HER mother, and she was taken back in time when these stories were confirmed. She is now busily engaged in digesting the book.

But the book is better than simply a Davenport history snapshot. As a woman, I was disheartened in the extreme to read of the cruelty practiced on young girls, as young as 11 who were forced into prostitution after having been raped. The Good Shepherd Home in Dubuque proved a godsend for many of the unfortunate girls. They were given a new life and dignity. It left me with new respect for the work of the Catholic Church in restoring people's lives.

This book gave me a view of middle America that caught me off guard. I hope this book gains wide currency, as it deserves it.

Intimacy is a balancing act that leaves most people teetering between their need for closeness and their need for autonomy. Couples often fall into treacherous patterns of hurt feelings and misunderstandings as one partner pushes for more intimacy and the other pulls away. In Breathing Room, psychtherapist Elayne Savage shows readers how to recognize what the space struggles in their relationships are really about. Thought-provoking exercises and examples from her her friends, practice and workshop participants help couples get past old resentments and negotiate a shared space that satisfies each person's expectations and needs.

        5 out of 5 stars A must read.......2007-10-01

I checked this book out at the library because my boyfriend and I were having some conflicts related to "space." Bottom line I loved it so much and found it so helpful that I bought one for the both of us to have and mark up the areas that we found important. The book really cleared up what intimacy is, as well as what it isn't and the positive ways we can create it in our relationships. I found this book to be especially helpful at guiding me to an understanding of my anxieties surrounding "space" in a relationship. I did check out many other books along with this one, but this and "Getting the Love You Want" were by far the most helpful.

5 out of 5 stars For me, this book was, quite simply, revolutionary.......2007-01-15

I just received this book from an Amazon seller yesterday, and finished it this morning. Since I was confounded by some of my relationships with regards to closeness/distance, and often found myself being "flooded" by
too much analysis of certain relationships that seem to deteriorate into conflict, hurt, misunderstandings and
ambivalence, this book gently eased my soul. It explains how and why get into these stalemate predicaments in some of our relationships - whether we're the "pursuer" or the "distancer" (or both), and does so in a non-judgemental way that doesn't pathologize what is common, to some degree, in experience of being human. There are also invitations to take risks to make things different and she tells us how. Throughout the book, Elayne Savage opened doors for me to understanding healthier intimacy that is respectful of differences. That she writes well and uses humor is a major plus. It is a delightful, reassuring read. I highly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars The authority for interpreting your partner's need for space.......2003-04-01

My now-fiancé and I have been trying to understand each other's respective need for space / intimacy for over a year now. This book is the Rosetta Stone and serves as a translator for those who confuse the need for space with rejection. This wonderful book has helped me not just understand her point of view, but my own as well, as if from a third-party perspective. That has been the real key in helping our previously-floundering and questioning relationship achieve a new level of intimacy and understanding.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent couples book!!.......2001-04-22

I am the webowner of Mental Health Today. This book discusses the all important and often misunderstood art of being intimate without being stifling. Great Affirmations along with couples discussion topics and exercises. Great primer on setting boundaries both inside and outside your relationship. Also discuss your behaviors when your boundaries have been crossed. I would consider this a wonderful book for the couple searching for intimacy, without feeling overwhelmed.

        5 out of 5 stars A ground breaking book!.......2001-01-23

Breathing Room is a "must buy" for anyone that is currently in or wants to be in a relationship. Dr. Savage takes the notion of space to new heights. The reader comes away with a better understanding of space, self, and the insight to give his/her relationship room to grow. Breathing Room is an informative book that is written in a way that is easy to understand. This is a deep and thought provoking book. I highly recommend it!

A lot of people have written about the phenomena of cybersex--some to tell their own adventures and others to provide social analysis. Author Cleo Odzer has the qualifications and talent to do both. As an anthropologist with a specialty in human sexuality issues and an unabashed cybersex enthusiast, she draws on both her own sexuality and her professional training to explore the worlds of cybersex in both personal and analytical manners within Virtual Spaces. She doesn't shrink from any aspect of online eroticism, providing replays of online events from the flirtatious to the explicit. However, this is not a romanticized portrayal of the cybererotic; it is instead a look at how real people sexually interact in fantasy environments and how the physical interaction is fictional, but psychological and emotional interactions are totally real.

As Odzer shares her experiences from a variety of online environments ranging from simple chat areas to complex MOOs and palaces, she explores the meaning of cybersex. She considers what cybersex means to individuals and what role it can play in both healthy and unhealthy sexuality, as well as how it can interact with the "face to face" world. Odzer doesn't ignore the ethical issues attached to sexuality--from gender discrimination to pornography--as they apply both online and off. Through it all, Virtual Spaces delivers a message about the reality of online eroticism in terms of emotional interaction among people and as a means of often surprising self-discovery.

4 out of 5 stars Personal and entertaining, a good geek read.......2001-02-08

This book is best read as the third in Cleo's series of rich yet exotic life experiences. As with the other two books, here we have a woman whose looks and charm have allowed her to squeak through a whole host of interesting experiences that, by now, should have left her dead, diseased, or incapacitated. But fortunately for us, we have this MUD & VR-centric collection of experiences that are refreshing, fun and immersive from this woman's community-centric point of view - and a very honest take on the (intended and unintended) hypocricies of love online.

2 out of 5 stars A disappointing attempt to expose the "truths" of cybersex........1998-08-30

I eagerly opened this book expecting to gain insight concerning the how's and why's of cybersex from an anthropological point of view. Instead, I learned about one woman's adventures in the prostitution houses of Thailand. The juxtaposition of human sexuality and cyberspace is a topic ripe with possibilities for exploration, but I found myself instead reading "glory days" passages and feeling pity for Odzer.

The references to pornography, s&m and the "horror" of meeting a virtual reality partner only to discover previously undisclosed girth is just not enough incentive to try to grasp the idiosyncracies and pleasures of cybersex.

I would suggest that this particular book be classified as "autobiography" instead of computer/internet interest.

1 out of 5 stars Cyberporn is addictive.......1998-05-29

As a psychologist specializing in sexuality, I found this book not at all qualifying as a professional offering. Odzer gives us pornography herself, and justifies it by her "analysis." Cybersex isn't normal sex, its symptomatic of loneliness and isolation, and often addiction. Readers shouldn't be reassured, but rather helped to take a look at what is missing from their social and love lives. Anyone who does more than take an occasional look at cyberporn should be worried.

5 out of 5 stars So refreshingly frank!!!.......1998-04-14

It is remarkable and inspiring when an author can write with such honesty. Amusing and poignant, this book is ultimately a fascinating look into virtual worlds that few people understand the full extent of. She writes like an adult for other adults, unlike so many other books about the internet. A wonderful book...

4 out of 5 stars Could not put it down until I read it cover to cover........1998-03-18

It is very remarkable for you to write so frankly about something that is contrary to "our everyday lifestyle", and do it so well. Your books have been very interesting to read and Sex and the Cyber Citizen has proven your talent as a writer once again. Cleo keep em coming. Thanks.
