I loved this book.......2007-05-10
Small Scale LivestockFarming:... is a simple easy to read text containing a broad overview of many more topics with more depth than expected and providing numerous references for areas which the text is not indepth enough for your needs. This book had to be the best money spent on a starting source for related knowledge. It is highly recomended to anyone intested in this subject.
lots of frosting very little cake. .......2007-04-18
I was put off by the author so I had a difficult time finishing this book.
The section on biology was nothing more than an eighth grade biology course and really unnecessary.
It appears that information that would be easily gleaned from other sources was abundant but firsthand knowledge was seriously lacking.
I didn't like her double standards. She advises readers to "Feel free to mark up" (page 116). She prices her meat to rural buyers slightly higher than the local butcher but she would have raised her prices even higher if she had lived closer to urban buyers. I can understand pricing higher if you have to drive farther to get to the city but that's not the advice. Then, in a story on fighting a factory farm on pages 124 & 125 she dubs a local man "Joe Greed". According to the story he sued because he had planned to sell his land to the factory farm envisioning lots of dollars in his pockets but with the new zoning laws he wasn't able to. If he's Joe Greed then she's "Carol Greed" for wanting urbanites to pay more simply because they live in the city. I don't agree with either of them.
I wonder if she's taken to writing books on farming intended to sell to city folks who only dream of country living and will never know her advice is of little help.
It was the little things that made this book bothersome such as her advice to have a silage pile but according to the author a farmer needs lots of specialized equipment for this. In the book The Self-Sufficient Life and How to Live It Seymour describes how to harvest by hand. For those modern small scale farms an electric weed whacker makes it a little easier. Cut it, turn it, stack it right in the fields and cover it with a tarp, voila, a silage pile. Fence it in order to control feeding and your done, nothing special needed.
One other point that I found difficult was her statement that she followed all the guidelines to be organic but wasn't certified, but mostly she advises to call a vet. I would have excepted that advice if the author would have included some information on how to get the vet to help without the use of antibiotics. According to the author antibiotics negate an organic animal standing and it must be sold as conventional. She gives 3 or 4 treatments for ailing animals and acknowledges successes with alternative treatments even names a few but that's it. I would expect someone that was farming organically to have a wealth of knowledge and include it when writing on the subject.
Excellent Resource.......2003-10-22
My brother gave this book to me for my birthday, and it has been great. We are new to farming, and it has helped us determine how to move forward, and to plan for our operation. We're retired, but we need this to pay some income, and that is what this book is all about, making money, but doing it so you don't screw up the land. The author has lots of excellent advice not only on caring for your animals, but also on direct marketing to get a bigger share of the consumer's dollar. She writes with a down to earth style that I really appreciate.
Is This High School Biology???.......2003-08-02
I was looking for a substantial book about small-scale livestock farming, and instead I was treated to a very basic introduction to agriculture. This book would make a great high school agriculture text, but beyond that it falls short of providing any real, useful, institutional knowledge that I was looking for. For example, in the book the author reviews basic high biology concepts such as the water cycle, the food chain, and the energy pyramid. She also reminds readers how to round up or round down. And if that were not insulting enough, she then informs readers that to be a successful farmer, you must dress like a farmer; "clean bib overalls and a straw hat, or a plaid shirt, jeans, and a cowboy hat." Give me a break. Again, if you want a simplistic, new age, farming book of little practical use by an author who has less than a decade of farming experience, this book is for you. If you want a no-frills, no-fluff, useful, dirt under your nails, John Deere farmer kind of a book, I would look elsewhere and I would suggest Gene Logsdon's The Contrary Farmer.
Inspiring ............2003-05-30
I got this book only a few months ago and I must say it has been a wealth of information. I learned about toxic plants, diseases, grazing management, budgeting your opperation effiecently, and also info on different feeding scales of species. Not to mention everything on this book but it has been an eye opening experience to learn from this knowledge and then apply it to my life.

Book Description
The rapid growth of organic farming has been among the most remarkable changes in global agriculture in recent decades. However, more attention was initially aid to the crop side of organic systems, and animals are a lower priority in formal research and the development of organic farming. But now, that has changed. There is now greater recognition of the need to understand animal health and welfare better. The purpose of this book is to further the understanding of organic animal husbandry and to demonstrate practical solutions and innovative methods, drawing mainly on research and practical experience with organic farming in Europe.

Extememly Useful.......2005-08-15
Whether you are a new dog owner, just got a new puppy, are training an adult dog or are not new to dog training, this book is filled with lots of valuable training techniques, just like the title. Many techniques you teach and use to build upon later. Lots of diagrams, pictures, illustrtations, and lists. Would be great for a 4-H member training a dog or for the casual pet owner just wanting to learn some basic training stuff up through the professional obedience trainer. I refer back to it throughout the year in all my training. Everyone who has a dog should get this book and use it!!
Building block for performance.......2005-07-20
When I first ordered the book I never received it from the first company I ordered it from. I finally found the phone # for amazon.com and talk to a respresentive who was very helpful and the book arrived 2 days later from amazon.I never did hear from the original company.
A Must-Have Book for Performance Dogs.......2003-11-23
The content of this book was great. The author gives a lot of examples of games you can play with your puppy to make training fun. I found several training errors I have been making with my own dogs in this book and, once I saw it in print, could see how that might affect motivation.
Contrary to what another reviewer previously mentioned, this book is NOT full of harsh corrections. In fact, there is not one instance where the author advocates harsh corrections or hard-handed training methods. When she does discuss corrections, it is with a very fair, gentle approach that seeks to get the dog immediately back to a position of earning praise while not letting a situation get to the point where the dog feels like commands are optional. This ENTIRE book is about FUN with your dog and learning how to make training, learning, and being with you something your dog can't wait to do. It is one of the most positive training books I have ever read.
She has great information about the use of food and toys and tells you how to use them appropriately while still making time with you be your dogs ultimate reward. She also talks about how to structure your puppy's life to make the most of your time together.
The author uses many real examples from working with her own dog or from her students. She also has a very nice chapter or two at the end about how to set goals to help yourself be successful with your dog. There are a lot of pictures and boxes highlighting the main ideas or offering in quick bites some additional ideas of how to utilize the information.
The ONLY complaint I have with this book is in its organization. She mentions having your puppy do a sit or a down all throughout the book but doesn't talk about teaching the sit or down until the 3rd to last chapter. She also gives TONS of examples of how to train your dog through play throughout the book but it can leave you feeling a bit overwhelmed feeling like you should train your dog 5 hours a day! It isn't until one of the very last chapters that she gives some ideas of how much set aside training time should be done each day and also talks about incorporating 30 seconds here or there as you are doing something else with the puppy anyway.
I would definitely consider this book a must-have. I plan to try to read it at least one more time before my next performance puppy arrives.
Devour this book!.......2002-11-06
This is a fabulous guide for starting a puppy to be any kind of competition dog. It shows you how to train your puppy, through day-to-day interaction, for a playful, confident attitude (you can teach precision later). The authors explain how to gradually move your puppy away from treats training and how to use praise effectively. The book describes how to get your puppy's attention and focus, primarily with games, so your puppy will LOVE to train and work with you. Sidebars describe how to work with some special dog personality types. Read this book before you bring your next puppy home!
Outmoded training ideas.......2002-10-16
Although I eagerly hoped for a good book about introducing agility to puppies with positive reinforcement, this book gravely disappointed me. In fact, this book was so filled with punishments ("corrections") of the puppy that I could barely believe that the book had been recently written; it read like dog training books written 20 years ago. It appeared to me that the author had been left behind in the revolution in positive reinforcement dog training. The author's ideas are particularly disturbing because they are applied to puppies.
Book Description
A hopeful, eye-opening book by first-time author, Tina Volpe, Fast Food Craze discusses the fast food giants and how their business decisions affect animals in the slaughterhouses, our health, and will encourage readers to stop and think: Why are we eating animals?
Customer Reviews:
There should be a 0 star rating.......2007-09-12
This had to be one of the worst books that I have ever read. It is nothing, but propaganda. Just the way it is put together would make an English major cry.
1. Any scientific example and event used rarely had a source listed next to it.
2. Any of the sources that were listed, were all websites, which again can ruin credibility. Majority of the websites were biased; Peta being listed as one that is used. Even if you were to use unbiased websites, INTELLIGENT readers like to see journal sources, book sources, newspaper sources. Because everyone knows how 'reliable' the internet it. . .
3. There are pictures but it doesn't tell you how old they are. I got a book about the circus that listed the year (or years) that the picture took place. Not only that, there is nothing informative about the pictures. If no one knows about debeaking and sees the pic with a chicken being debeaked, how will the person know what is going on?
4. Just so they can give you the guilt trip, the author throws in stories about how cows and chickens are like pets. Now, that's when it all comes together: the pictures, the stories, the quotes: It is a play on your emotions, which is the opposite of a logical book.
5. The message is simple: Go Vegetarian and that's all. They don't even try to tell someone about the possibility of health hazards of being a vegetarian. Ask your doctor about some of the possible dangers of vegetarianism and veganism? Look up children that suffer from Shingles and a vegetarian link.
6. In the back is the reference list, which is all and good, except one important essential problem: How do I know which resource belongs to what you wrote in the article? I wouldn't be surprised if there is a plagiarism problem in the book.
7. Then, there are famous people who are vegetarians/vegans. Does anyone really give care that Alec Baldwin is a vegetarian/vegan? The same man who didn't know how old his pre-teen child was? Or Pamela Anderson, who is nothing more than a has-been since Baywatch ended. Some of the people listed probably went vegan/vegetarian to lose weight or to have a change about themselves. It is not always about the animals that a person went vegan/vegetarian.
Over all, I give this book a 1, a 0 if it was an option. I didn't learn jack and if there were facts, maybe the author should learn how to reference them better. If this was a book presented to my college professors, it would have failed instantly just on how it was put together on its own.
The Fast Food Craze.......2007-07-16
When I picked up The Fast Food Craze, I had expected that this book would contain information on the lack of nutritional value of fast food. I assumed this would lead to a discussion about the importance of knowing where food comes from and perhaps the benefits of slow food.
There was a short discussion about the lack of nutrition in fast food noting that such places buy the cheapest products possible to increase profits. However, this information led to a one sided debate about vegetarianism that tended not to focus on the health benefits of a vegetarian diet but on the cruel treatment of animals slated for human consumption. Thus, much of the book included horror stories of animals living in cramped mass facilities and intelligent animals that saved human lives. No where in the book did the author indicate that these horror situations tended to occur in large commercial facilities rather than family farming situations where financial livelihood is synonymous with proper livestock care. Nor did the author point out that often the same types of large commercial facilities are responsible for potentially dangerous genetic manipulation in fruit and vegetables as well as excessive use of pesticides and preservatives used to make these products more attractive.
Fallen Angel Reviews.......2007-03-20
In this refreshing book about living without meat, Ms. Volpe takes us on an exciting yet disturbing tale of our fast food industries. The universal havoc caused by our obsession with meat is pointed out in clear and concise chapters. Filled with true-life stories and a variety of case studies, the focus is on our most commonly consumed farm animals as chickens, pigs, and cows.
In support of her strong and quite opinionated views, Ms. Volpe has included numerous photos. While a few were quite disturbing, one can see how a photo can be so strong and sometimes necessary to illustrate a point. In addition, she has compiled a list of interesting quotes from famous people on the topic as well as updated information from Congress and other governmental bodies. With the most recent facts and figures supporting appalling statistics, one cannot help but think about the current situation. The treatment of animals, the resulting business, and the consumption by the general public needs to be examined further.
Although I have long since wondered at the treatment of farm animals, nothing could have really prepared me for what Ms. Volpe describes the situation to be. I feel that this book should be read by the masses, as only public pressure will improve conditions. The examples she uses forces the reader to think and while being easy accessible, is also thought provoking. In addition, she has included a helpful resource section containing websites and further reading suggestions including cookbooks and magazines. Whether you agree with her views or not, it can be agreed that Ms. Volpe has given us a well-written book on the subject matter.

Good Reminder.......2007-02-26
I have been a vegan since 1988 and read a lot of books on the subjects Tina is writing about. What I like about Tina's book is it brought me back when I worked on an egg farm and when I bought a 1 day old calf from an auction that they were going to kill if someone didn't by it; I was 8 yrs old when I bought that calf. Tina didn't overstate the abuses that go on in farming in fact there is a lot more she could of said but didn't, but this is a great book for someone who is not privy to the harm eating animals causes us and them as well as our precious environment. I think every parent should have their kids read this book; and hopefully the parents might take a peek at it also.
There are many other books that will go into a lot more detail on each subject in her book, but I have yet to find one that puts such emotion and personal connection and her love of animals as this book does.
I wish I read this book when I was younger; their would be a lot less dead animals that would of went through my body and my mind would of progressed at a much younger age about our world.
I think this book should be read by the young and old!
A must read!.......2006-11-12
I loved this book. The stories about the animals saving lives were wonderful. I will not eat fast food again, nor will I partake in the cruelty involved in the way animals are raised for food. Why don't most Americans know about these horrors! I was shocked and really enlightened at what goes on inside all the little packages of meat found at the grocery stores, and I highly recommend it to everyone who eats!

The book details the procedures for ensuring processing efficiency and product quality.
Book Description
The Soil and Health was published in 1945, just before agricultural corporations surged to global proportions. Sir Albert Howard's work is a major inspiration to the growing organic and sustainable farming movement and a thought-provoking reminder of a road not taken in developing mainstream agriculture during the past half-century.
The central tenet of Howard's philosophy is that healthy soil, vegetation, animals, and humans are connected and that undernourishment of soil is the source of modern agricultural and health problems. In Howard's estimation, heavy reliance on chemical fertilizers will ultimately lead to widespread disease and destruction of vibrant communities. As the environmental and social consequences of industrial farming are being hotly debated, The Soil and Health remains vital to understanding what is at stake in the battle between chemical and organic farming.
Customer Reviews:
Great Early Book on Organic Agriculture.......2007-04-04
The Soil and Health is a wonderful book that is equal parts agricultural science and environmental advocacy, with just a dash of kooky Nature worship thrown in. Howard was a conventionally trained agricultural scientist in the late 19th and early to mid 20th century who was employed by the British government to bring modern industrial agriculture, based on chemical fertilizers, pesticides, fungicides and herbicides to Britain's tropical colonies. Soon, though, he realized the value of more traditional agricultural practices from India and China, especially in keeping the microbial, fungal and invertebrate life in the soil healthy.
If you believe in the value of organic agriculture, it is somewhat sad to see how little has changed since 1945. Howard confidently predicts in his book that organic methods based on compost would soon sweep the globe. Things have changed some, though. We can now buy "organic" labeled products in most markets in America, and I believe that more people have an appreciation for the importance of treating the earth well. This book does an excellent job of establishing and reinforcing that appreciation.

Dairy causes cancer........2007-01-21
This is an important book. You can verify its facts by also reading the blockbuster book called "The China Study."
Casein is the culprit. It causes cancer tumors to develop. Remove the casein and guess what? The cancer tumors shrink and disappear.
Remember how powerful the dairy industry is. Protect yourself from their lies by reading the truth in this book.
Boring and Misleading.......2007-01-10
Samuel Epstein's book reads like a dull novel. I don't take him seriously, and neither does the scientific community. If you want the facts, seek information from reputable sources. The safety of milk from cows treated with rBGH has been affirmed by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), World Health Organization (WHO), American Medical Association (AMA), National Institutes of Health (NIH), American Dietetic Association (ADA) and regulatory agencies in 30 countries. This book is a tome. A holy bible.
I ahve made my own Koji, Tempeh, Tofu, Kim Chee, and Saur Kraut with this book. Admitedly the Saur Kraut was wierd but my German relatives confirmed what I had done and were overjoyed that I had done it the old way.
My long experience in microbiology and fermentation (beer, beer, beer, beer) mean
I KNOW THIS IS GOOD BOOK.
But the most ignorant (but literate) mudsquating yokel can pull of alost any ferment cuz the techniques are thousand years old.
Get this book and get on it.
