5 out of 5 stars Boynton's Best.......2007-09-15

My wife and I received this board book from a co-worker of mine about three months before our first son was born -- almost nine years ago. A daughter and another son later, this remains my favorite children's board book and definitely a favorite of my three children during their first couple of years. The tempo, simplicity and fun illustrations captivated them. Even though the books has been chewed, drooled on and worn down, it is one of those books that we'll save for our grandchildren because it holds special memories of what must be nearly a thousand readings that produced joyful smiles and laughter from our three children. We love Sandra Boynton books and we rate this one the best of all.

4 out of 5 stars cute book with interesting text.......2007-08-23

This children's book is cute with all of the barnyard animals dancing around and contains more content than typical children's books out there. The only reason I rated it a 4 and not a 5 is because the illustrations are pretty colorless and one-dimensional. They really don't hold my child's attention at all. Maybe they will when she is a toddler, but for now, they just don't appeal to her. Being an artist, I can't say that I blame her! The text on the other hand is very lively and imaginative, so I sing the words and act them out to my child with over-the-top gestures, and that seems to do the trick!

5 out of 5 stars Barnyard Best.......2007-08-03

My baby LOVES this book. We can read the story and then go through the whole thing again just pointing out animals and making each animal's sounds. This one is a must have.

5 out of 5 stars I have three books by Sandra Boynton for my four-month old.......2007-07-17

I plan to buy more from the Sandra Boynton collection. My four month old loves this book and the other two we have (Snuggle Puppy and The Belly Button Book). She has shown interest since she was two months. Her books rhyme which makes them fun to read.

my mother-in-law got my son the barnyard dance and my son loves the book! I love reading it to him because you can sing to it and its fun. I already bought him Pajama Time and I am off to buy some of the box sets.

Like the Oklahoma dust bowl from which she came, 14-year-old narrator Billie Jo writes in sparse, free-floating verse. In this compelling, immediate journal, Billie Jo reveals the grim domestic realities of living during the years of constant dust storms: That hopes--like the crops--blow away in the night like skittering tumbleweeds. That trucks, tractors, even Billie Jo's beloved piano, can suddenly be buried beneath drifts of dust. Perhaps swallowing all that grit is what gives Billie Jo--our strong, endearing, rough-cut heroine--the stoic courage to face the death of her mother after a hideous accident that also leaves her piano-playing hands in pain and permanently scarred.

Meanwhile, Billie Jo's silent, windblown father is literally decaying with grief and skin cancer before her very eyes. When she decides to flee the lingering ghosts and dust of her homestead and jump a train west, she discovers a simple but profound truth about herself and her plight. There are no tight, sentimental endings here--just a steady ember of hope that brightens Karen Hesse's exquisitely written and mournful tale. Hesse won the 1998 Newbery Award for this elegantly crafted, gut-wrenching novel, and her fans won't want to miss The Music of Dolphins or Letters from Rifka. (Ages 9 and older) --Gail Hudson

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Gritty.......2007-10-08

Wow, this powerful book left me thirsty and choking from the grit of the Oklahoma plains. A great coming of age story, Hesse gives us the feminine perspective of what is important - what is worth living for - during a time of extreme poverty and hopelessness. The drought, the dust storms, the grasshoppers, "The Path of Our Sorrow" (p. 83-84) has taken away any hopefulness for a fruitful harvest. But Billie Jo and her family are some of the more fortunate ones. They are able to keep their farm; they have a house and some food, even if they have to "chew" the milk because of the dust. (p. 22) The piano offers some comfort, too, until the accident.
In addition to the Great Depression, Billie Jo has to deal with her own depression, a result of the accidental death of her mother and the disfiguring hurt of her own injuries. Was it Billie Jo's fault? Her Father's? Will she be able to forgive him, or herself?
Billie Jo is bitter. Bitter from the dust, from her father's silence, from her mother's absence. She tries to run away from her hurt, "Out of the Dust" (p. 197-8) but she finds that the hurt follows her, and it is in this realization that she is finally able to forgive her father and herself. She is ready to begin living again.

4 out of 5 stars Jacky shares his thoughts.......2007-08-30

This book has a lot of poems about the main character, Billie Jo's childhood. She has many sad stories that make me feel upset; also she has some happy stories too. Her poems are really good. I can imagine the area that she wrote about and feel the way she feels. Finally she was happy, which makes me really glad. I really love this book. I sympathize with the experience of her mother and brother dying, her friends leaving, and her hand being burned. These poems really describe Billie Jo from her outside to her inside. Her life wasn't happy most of the time, because she couldn't even play piano or forget the pain in her hands and heart. Her stories to the world make me feel very touched; when she is happy I can feel it, when she sad I share that with her. The last part is my favorite because they are finally out of the dust and they have their family back together. She described it perfectly; I can see the picture of the story. While reading the book, I looked up information on the internet and watched a movie (The Grapes Of Wrath) to learn more about the time period and understand more.

5 out of 5 stars Not just for Children.......2007-08-07

Though "Out of the Dust" is marketed at a YA selection, it is no more a children's book than "The Grapes of Wrath" or "To Kill a Mockingbird." With a series of perfectly rhythmed prose poems that capture the sensations of the 1930s dust bowl, "Out of the Dust" tells the story of a young girl in Oklahoma who must overcome her own guilt when her mother is killed in a house fire. This is one of the most vivid, painful and, in the end, joyous stories I have ever had the great fortune to find.

5 out of 5 stars Billie_Joe's escape.......2007-06-03

I thought that this book out of 10 was a 10.It was a great book and I just hope that after reading this book review that you will want to read it, too.I hope that everyone will read this book(if they like my book review about it).Well this book was my favorite book that I've read so far and i hope that you will love it, too.

5 out of 5 stars back to the prairie.......2007-06-02

Out Of The Dust (Apple Signature Edition) is the 2-year diary of an adolescent Oklahoma girl, Billie Jo. Each 1-2 page entry is a prose poem that relates the dust-bowl setting to the lives of Billie Jo, her family, and community.

Karen Hesse's free-verse prose is serviceable, reminiscent of Masters' Spoon River Anthology (Signet Classics). It serves simply to control the flow, tempo, and idiom of the narration.

Through most of the book, I feared that the story would seep away into despair and inevitability. Instead, at the end I recognized the toughened and tangled strands of Billie Jo's life rising from the dust in a perfect metaphor of the prairie sod.

For a completely different, but equally wonderful treatment of this metaphor I recommend PrairyErth (A Deep Map): An Epic History of the Tallgrass Prairie Country.

When Garnet finds a silver thimble in the sand by the river, she is sure it’s magical. But is it magical enough to help her pig, Timmy, win a blue ribbon on Fair Day?

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Very well written........2007-04-19

This is a book that, while written in the late thirties, possesses a timeless quality. The imagery is sublime, especially in the useage of simile and metaphor. The story is uncomplicated, like life in the midwest countryside, but uniquely eventful at the same time. It is a lovely book, and very well written.

5 out of 5 stars 5 plus stars.......2006-05-04

This is my very favorite book for young girls. First and most importantly, it is really fun to read. I can just picture an 8-year-old girl reading this during summer vacation. After reading this book, how could a kid not fall in love with reading books for recreation? It is loaded with thrilling adventure. Even though the main character is a girl, she is not a "girly girl" at all. She is an outdoor farm girl who loves nature and has an active curiosity about the world around her. The characters are lovely, and lovingly portrayed. The sketches of Garnet's pesky younger brother, restless older brother, mother and father stressed out by trying to make a farm work at the end of the depression and drought, her friend Citronella, and the people of Garnet's farm community are amazing writing and enjoyable, educational reading. There are many interesting stories about people who Garnet meets during her beautiful and exciting summer. Citronella's grandmother tells a story about growing up as a settler which is not just interesting because it is about pioneer life, meeting Indians, and her childhood adventures, it may also encourage young readers to find out about their own grandparent's stories. The account of the family firing limestone to build a new barn is fascinating, and the family meets and adopts a wonderful boy who they encounter while spending the night minding the kiln. His story really brings home the realities of the depression, when adults and children travelled the rails and backroads of America to find work and food. The contrast between Garnet, who loves the land, her older brother, who has seen the stress his father goes through to wring his living from it and wants to get away, and the young hobo who has experienced the wider world and loves the steadiness and bounty of the farm are deeper elements to the story. The story of farm life, weather, and nature is wonderful, and I am sure many, many children have fallen in love with nature and reading from this classic book.

5 out of 5 stars Summertime and the living is easy.......2004-03-14

The Newbery Award winning books of the 1930s went through an interesting phase that was never again to be repeated. Starting with "Caddie Woodlawn" (1935), continuing with "Roller Skates" (1936), and capitulating with the delightful "Thimble Summer" (1938) these books all followed spunky independent females with little to no regard for the traditional roles women had always carried. But while "Caddie" and "Roller Skates" were period pieces that ultimately ended with the girls giving in to society's restraints, "Thimble Summer" trumps this trend. In it, we have a farm girl named Garnet who has a load of exciting summer adventures and who ends her tale wearing sailor pants doing hand stands over and over again in a pasture.

The tale of "Thimble Summer" begins when Garnet finds a silver thimble in a nearby dried lakebed. According to Garner, the summer's wonderful aspects only take place after this key event. Her father receives a loan from the government allowing him to build a new barn. Her family meets and virtually adopts an adorable homeless boy. Garnet shows her favorite pig at the state fair and wins a blue ribbon. All these events are told with a marvelous simplicity and a real sense of being there with Garnet. From the very first page of this book, you notice the author's excellent writing style. About the heat of the summer Enright writes, "It was like being inside of a drum. The sky like a bright skin was stretched tight above the valley, and the earth too, was tight and hard with heat". You're in safe hands with this writer. Don't believe me? Here's another wonderful descriptive passage. "Her shoes hurt her; and with aching feet and her bundle and empty pocketbook she felt like an old, old woman coming home from seeing grandchildren who didn't love her".

But observe this book within its 1938 context. Here's a girl that does a boy's chores. We never see her darn socks or cook, though she's often seen working in the fields. She's nine or so, so she doesn't go about falling in love (not even with the adorable homeless boy). She wears pants most of the time, is never badgered by either parent to be more feminine and (the coup de grace) at the end of the story she plans to someday have a farm of her own. Fabulous. Then there are those wonderful little details about the past. Kids reading this book may not get the references to G-men, Zeppelin shaped balloons, or the running boards of cars. Fortunately these spots of the past are either
self-evident or mercilessly scant.

Is the book flawless then? Almost. There are a couple tiny flaws here and there. The line drawings accompanying the text (drawn by the author herself) are magnificent. Unfortunately, there's one time they belie the text. If you've a child who's overweight in any way, this may not be the best book to show them. While Garnet's best female friend Citronella is continually called "fat", in the book's pictures she's the most average kid you've ever seen (compared to the waiflike Garnet, of course). Any child with body image problems is going to see the pictures, read the text, and come up with some pretty heart-wrenching conclusions. If Garnet is normal then... You get the picture.

I don't really understand why kids don't know this book better. Anyone who's ever wanted to live on a farm in the country would enjoy it. Anyone who's ever wanted to hitchhike like Garnet, spend a night in a library, or swim rivers on their own would like it. It's a pip, this one. It's got moxie. Don't forgo the pleasures of "Thimble Summer" simply because it's old. You'll be missing out on more than you could have possibly imagined.

5 out of 5 stars melissa1007.......2002-04-03

When I was a little girl, one of the chapters in this book appeared in a volume of the Childcraft Books. The chapter was "Locked In" where the girls have to spend the night in the library. I absolutely loved the story but it wasn't until I was an adult and had daughters of my own the I found this book and was able to read the whole thing to my children. The book is timeless even though it is set in a much simpler time. I highly recommend it to children and adults alike!!!

4 out of 5 stars Helps to learn drawing.......2007-05-07

This book has given my 5 yr old son confidence by helping him to draw simple animals that he thought were too difficult to draw. He has not been as interested in the writing part. It would have been nice if it was like a workbook with blank pages across from each page so he could practice right in there.

5 out of 5 stars This book is Awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2006-09-24

I homeschool my kids and I bought this book for our art lessons. This is such an easy to follow drawing book. My kids are ages 5,7 & 10. All 3 are finding it easy to follow and their drawings are so good. I like to do the pictures myself. I like how the next step of the drawing is in a different color, it makes it so much easier. My 7 yr old even sat down with the book by herself and drew a picture without any help, and it turned out really nice. Hope this helps.

5 out of 5 stars Wow - how fun is this ?!?!?!.......2005-09-20

Bought this for my 5 YO daughter - it gave her incentive to practice her printing - she wasn't allowed to attemp the drawing part until the writing part was finished.
Basically, each page has three-four sentences for them to copy with a full picture already done above it on the same page. On the next page, the main object of the picture (a pig for example) is drawn with basic shapes in a step-by-step manner - even my older girls love to try to draw them.
I can't wait to get the next book in the series - great idea!!!!

5 out of 5 stars We all love this book!.......2005-08-30

My girls, 8 and 4, love this book. I am amazed at how well their drawings come out. Not only are their drawings fantastic but the older girl utilizes the writing exercises and thinks they are fun - unlike other writing exercises.

I am a homeschooling mother and would recommend this book to anyone with children, homeschool or not. They will love it.

5 out of 5 stars 4 year old daugher loves this book!.......2002-02-27

I bought this book for my 4 year old daugter to help her to draw more than stick people and flowers. She loves it. She gets so excited when she can actually draw a barn, a pig, a horse.... She wants more books. Have fun with it and learn how to draw using simple directions.

5 out of 5 stars I adore this book.......2006-06-08

I read this all the time when I was younger. I memorized it. This was seriously the best book ever along with Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs. Who doesn't look Chester?? Hell yeahz. I named the pig I dissected in Biology after him haha. But seriously, good book for any kid.

3 out of 5 stars Not One of Bill Peet's Best.......2005-12-18

This book begins with a very dissatisfied looking Chester contemplating his fate as a young pig. Considering the likely direction of his life, he determines to act rather than to be acted upon. "But before I end up as so much sausage and ham, I intend to try and amount to something", he says.

This decision sets off a series of adventures, near misses, and mishaps that expose the proactive porker to the harsh and cruel world outside his farm. Soon his attempt to transcend his identity is replaced by the more immediate struggle simply to survive. This leads Chester to ultimately abandon himself to his destiny.

And then, when he has ceased all striving, the direction of his life changes, in a positive and unexpected way.

While this book has a happy ending, the world it portrays is dark and forbidding. Chester is spared as a result of chance rather than his own good works or grace. As a parent reading Chester to my children I found this world view to be quite disturbing. For this reason I'd recommend other Bill Peet books (for instance The Pinkish Purplish Bluish Egg) over this one.

1 out of 5 stars Dangerous escape by the pig........2005-09-29

Chester escapes from the bad guys by running in front of a train. That's a bad thing to show kids who might think they can do the same.

3 out of 5 stars The Country Pig.......2005-09-25

Similar storyline as "Charlotte's Web" and too long a read for me as a parent. But my son enjoys it and asks lots of questions regarding it.

5 out of 5 stars BILL PEET - UNSUNG GENIUS OF THE GOLDEN YEARS OF DISNEY.......2005-09-08

We had an original set of Bill Peet books when I was a kid. They were and still are my favorite children's books. The imagery is so striking that it set my childhood imagination on fire. I was fascinated to find out when I went to Animation school later in life that Bill Peet was one of the original story guys from the Golden Age of Disney.

He contributed to the stories of Pinocchio, Fantasia, Dumbo, Song of the South, Cinderella, Alice in Wonderland, Peter Pan, Sleeping Beauty, 101 Dalmations, The Sword in the Stone and The Jungle Book during his time at Disney. He called it quits at Disney and went on to do these children's books.

His books are usually a moral story but not heavy handed. They're usually encouraging individuality. They're like sitting on grandpa's lap on the sun porch listening to a story the way they used to be told. He's one of the countries master story tellers.

"The First Four Years," is a story about the early years of the marriage of Laura Ingalls and Manly Wilder. As the story starts in 1894, Laura agrees to marry Manly and help him try to make a living farming. The young family eventually grows with the birth of baby Rose.

The Wilder family faces many trials thoughout there lives. sickness, the harsh climate, and more. Wilder presents the often deadly dangers of pioneer life quite often.

There are some dark and harsh moments along the way, but I found this book to be joyful and hopeful. Wilder shows courage of the pioneer farm family.

What little girl didn't love Little House? OK, most of us--and if we loved it enough, we read them all, all of them exciting and heartwarming, until this one.

In The First Four Years, they don't sing together after the crop fails.

Reading the Little House books as a child, I loved the adventure and the warm family life, and didn't really notice that they were starving (Long Winter) or that large gaps occurred in the narrative whenever something really bad happened (By the Shores of Silver Lake). Reading them over as an adult, this was a really really depressing tale written by a person trying too hard to be cheerful. (Not that they don't have their place, for kids--my love of history is surely at least in part a result of loving the Little House books!)

I found The First Four Years positively refreshing in showing how frontier life was difficult and lonely. Reading biographical (not historical fiction) accounts of LIW's life shows The First Four Years to be a much more honestly written tale, and it still has some characteristic warmth and even humor. But boy was it hard to find some in that life.

It is really sad to know that after a life of not enough food or a consistent place to live, the author married a prosperous young man from a well-to-do family and lost everything in the next few years, so that she was worse off than ever. But that's the way life is for some people.

The one star rather than five is merely because the book was not fleshed out enough. I'm rather glad Rose didn't get her hands on this one, though, as I would not have liked to see the lighter side of diptheria.

3 out of 5 stars "The rich man gets his ice in summer; the poor man gets his in winter.".......2006-07-29

"The First Four Years" describes Laura and Almanzo Wilder's wedding and early years on a Dakota farm in the 1880s. Laura first tells Almanzo that she will never marry a farmer because the life is so hard and offers little financial security, so he makes a deal with her: They will try farming for three years and if it doesn't work out, he'll get a job in town. She agrees, and they begin their life together.

The manuscript for this book was found after Laura's death in 1957. It is very different from her previous Little House books in that there is neither dialogue nor emotion; rather, it is a dispassionate list of events. A lot happens to the Wilders during their first four years including the birth of a daughter, disastrous weather and constant debt, serious illness, and a death in the family. Yet never once does Laura describe any emotional reaction to these events; she faces both good and bad times with equal stoicism.

Although the book is short, it seemed to drag because it was so dry and repetitive; we get endless descriptions of prairie weather, the condition of their livestock, and their financial troubles, that would be of little interest to 9- and 10-year olds. I learned a lot about living conditions at the time, but found it lacked the charm and energy of earlier books.

4 out of 5 stars The Last Four Years in Dakota.......2005-11-19

This is her diary account of their last years in Dakota Territory. It was a rough draft and was not completed for publication during Laura's lifetime. There is a difference in tone from earlier books; there is more reality. The Wilder farm in Mansfield Missouri is now on exhibit.

"The First Year" discusses life on the farm and its economics. Its hard work, but a man can make more money and be an owner. Laura and Manly discuss the type of wedding they could have. Their home and its contents are described. Manly bought a sulky plow which would be more productive, and a small riding pony for Laura. Fall was the time to butcher their fat pig. Riders pass by, and wild geese fly south. There is a sudden snow storm that hides the house from the barn; a clothesline is helpful. The storm killed a man, and cattle. The poor harvest meant few Christmas presents. The return of wild geese marked the end of winter. Laura meets the doctor and learns she will have a baby. Manly bought a new binder to harvest the wheat. A good harvest would pay off their debts. But a hailstorm came and flattened their wheat! They would get money by moving to the homestead and borrowing a mortgage. They sold hay and used oat straw for their horses.

"The Second Year" begins with their move to the homestead. Hay was their only crop. The activities of the wild geese promised a mild winter. Laura had an eight pound baby girl name Rose, strong and healthy. Then a blizzard hit in the middle of April! Two visitors were caught and froze to death. A lower yield of grain allowed paying the interest and redeeming some of the smaller notes. They hadn't done so badly.

"The Third Year" began with a new hard-coal heater which would provide better heat for the family. Laura and Manly were sick with diphtheria, and Manly had complications. They sold the homestead and moved back to the tree farm. They rode their ponies to exercise them. Laura buys 100 sheep with her Cousin Peter, who stays with them to help out. Hot winds ruined their wheat crop. But they cut more hay from the common land.

"A Year of Grace" begins with their evaluation of the past 3 years. Their crops mostly failed, but one good crop would even things up. They had more cows, calves, horses, colts, and sheep. The gift of the Waverly novels helps Laura in her daily life. A high wind created a dust storm and difficulties in leading the sheep to their barn. There was a threat of a prairie fire that struck elsewhere. Manly had to buy more seed wheat and oats to replace all that was lost to this wind. But the shearing of the sheep repaid their costs and gave a surplus. The many lambs doubled their flock. Farmers are dependent on the weather, yet must pay interest and taxes and buy what they needed to live. Manly owed 3% per month on the money borrowed for re-seeding. They could buy a book of coupons for groceries at 2% per month. The lack of rain was bad for the grain, then hot winds killed the wheat and oats; even the trees. Manly would have to file on their homestead, but would lose everything if they could not raise the cash when due. A tornado passes close to their home. Tragedy occurs when their baby son dies. Then the kindling for the stove caught fire and burned down their house! A long shanty was quickly built. They would be able to sell their surplus stock, and maybe next year would be better.

[The story ends here. Perhaps this unhappy story would not be salable during the Great Depression? The 'Introduction' guesses that Almanzo's death presented Laura from continuing and finishing this work.]

4 out of 5 stars Cute and sturdy.......2007-03-29

A cute, yet simple book with vibrant colors--my 1 year old loves it. The pages are thicker and sturdier than most board books. While it does make it slightly harder for my child to turn the pages by himself, I believe this book will hold up better than most of his books.

5 out of 5 stars My Son LOVES this Book.......2007-01-06

He wore the first one out that Grandma had purchased at a supermarket and I had to find a second online through Amazon, but it's the first book he gave me kisses for when I read to him. He is fascinated by machinery as I'm sure most boys are.

They all have the same generic plot to them except for
different mysteries. The end was actually surprising
with it's couple of twists. I think this book is where
I end my reading of Nancy Drew. The books were good

enjoyable reads that I could read in a few hours.

4 out of 5 stars The Case of Nancy Drew: An Adult Reader's Thoughts On RED GATE FARM.......2006-09-20

Originally written by Mildred Wirt Benson from outlines by Edward Stratemeyer, the Nancy Drew series was first published in 1930s. THE SECRET OF RED GATE FARM was the sixth book in the series, and like the earlier books it presented its heroine as a rich, headstrong, and distinctly reckless teenager who sometimes carried a pistol and who wasn't above breaking the law when it suited her purposes.

As the series progressed and other writers began to generate Nancy Drew novels, the character changed and Nancy was "toned down;" instead of flatly rich, she became reasonably affluent; recklessness was replaced by commonsense caution; and while she might be willing to bend the law a bit she would never knowingly break it. In the 1950s and 1960s the earlier novels were re-written to reflect this change in character.

Originally published in 1931, RED GATE FARM was re-written in 1961--but unlike several other re-written titles the story remains much the same. In this instance, Nancy and her friends Bess and George visit Red Gate Farm, where owner Mrs. Byrd is in financial difficulty and has rented a portion of the land to a religious cult. When Nancy becomes curious, she and her friends are threatened by the cult members--and they decide to infiltrate the group's strange gatherings.

It is worth noting that the cult, which is called The Black Snake Cult, dresses in white robes with odd, peaked hoods, and Nancy and the girls consider disguising themselves with sheets and pillowcases the better to spy upon their activities. Given the era of the book's first publication and later re-write, this would seem to be a subconcious reference to the Klu Klux Klan on the author's part! As always in the original series, the story is very much of its era: there are no cell phones, computers, or modern gadgets, and Nancy is very much an ideal of the time: she can sew, herd a cow, treat a snakebite, and still seem to dress appropriately for all social occasions.

The Nancy Drew books are not great literature by any stretch of the imagination--they are too distinctly formula for that--but they are competently written, literate, and never talk down to their target audience. They are also good "comfort reading" for grown-ups who recall their childhood reading fondly. RED GATE FARM is an amusing read for old fans and newcomers alike.

    5 out of 5 stars Very positive.......2006-02-13

I just loved this mystery, starting out with a shopping trip, where Bess wanted Oriental perfume, that the cashier, an
Indochinese girl named Yvonne Wong did not want to sell. Then
Nancy tried to help Millie Burd, whom she aroused from faint on the train home, find a job as a gal Friday. However, Yvonne Wong got the job instead, because Al Sniggs, who had the office, was a part of the same racket, Hale Syndicate, that had the Oriental shop! (Just as good that Millie DIDN'T land the job, as she would have landed in JAIL with the rest of that illegal outfit, which would have broken Grannie Burd's heart!) The rest of the story revealed how the shop where Bess bought the perfume though Yvonne Wong was reluctant to sell it, the office where Millie sought work, and the Black Snake Colony (a supposed Nature cult) ALL were part of same criminal caboodle! The end was delightful,
with the gang ending up in jail and the foreclosure of Red Gate Farm averted. Really shows what Nancy and her friends were like.
