This is an invaluable tool for the serious grower. Any experienced gardner will be able to use the information in this book to fabulous advantage. Although highly technical, (the authors go to great lengths to substantiate all the material presented in a scientific manner)the book is formatted in such a way that it can be used by anyone to diagnose and treat pest/disease problems event by event, rather like an encyclopdia. It is thorough and formatted logically and concisely. This is an excellant troubleshooting tool which works exceptionally well with pest and disease encyclopedias in the gardener's library.

This is a monumental effort, 220 page plus book well laid out and researched with heaps of references and an easy to follow index of pests and diseases plus biological solutions as the title indicates. Members may recall that John McPartland in fact all the authors were very helpful to NZHIAI some time back regarding MAF's (Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries) request for information regarding industrial hemp pests and diseases. By NZ standards this book is quite pricey (NZD 150-00 plus landed) That said I would suggest if you are re serious regarding growing industrial hemp this book will become as it is rapidly for me "Your bible." There is so much information my head is spinning. It is attractively bound and could well become a collectors item. No problems with NZ customs. In a word it is BRILLIANT. A credit to the authors. It can be obtained from the website below. Only took a week to get here.

Hemp diseases and pests An amazing new tome on cannabis cultivation. from CC On-line, by Pete Brady

Here's the perfect recipe for a book about cannabis: use three authors who have spent decades studying cannabis horticulture, combine them with an international publishing company, and give them enough resources to create an oversized book with professional citations, illustrations, and binding.

This perfect recipe has produced a gorgeous new book, HEMP DISEASES AND PESTS - MANAGEMENT AND BIOLOGICAL CONTROL. The authors - Dr. John McPartland, Robert Connell Clarke, and David Watson - are premier marijuana researchers whose credibility and breadth of knowledge are legendary.

McPartland is a medical doctor, botanist and cannabinoid researcher. Clarke is the author of two epic texts, MARIJUANA BOTANY and HASHISH!. Watson runs HortaPharm, the Dutch cannabis breeding consortium supplying specialty cannabis to UK med-pot research projects conducted by GW Pharmaecuticals.

HEMP DISEASES AND PESTS is a fascinating, practical book, and an upcoming issue of CANNABIS CULTURE will give a more complete summary of its features. For the purposes of this brief online review, however, I assure you that this book will significantly increase yield, efficiency and quality for any marijuana grower who follows its advice.

The book includes photos that help growers diagnose dozens of plant dysfunctions, including enemy insects, mites, mammals, and fungi, environmentally-caused problems, overwatering, and nutrient deficiencies. It tells growers how to protect their crops using biocontrols instead of toxic chemicals. It describes ideal soil components, harvesting guidelines, and curing procedures.

Although HEMP DISEASES AND PESTS is not intended as a "grow book" that focuses on lighting, security, and clandestine techniques, its scope, accuracy and detail make it an incomparable textbook that every marijuana grower should have. It is interesting and entertaining, immaculately presented and organized, and features the most innovative and reliable techniques for keeping your plants healthy and happy.

HEMP DISEASES AND PESTS is a large, 251 page, professional book with a professional price. It's well worth it. When I grew my own marijuana, I was often puzzled by plant problems. If I'd had this book, I could have easily eliminated those problems. HEMP DISEASES AND PESTS will likely increase the yield of your garden by at least 50%- if that's not worth, I don't know what is!

5 out of 5 stars overwhelmingly thorough.......2000-12-29

Having only been able to get an overview of this imposing tome, I came away thorougly impressed. for by far the most comprehensive book on the subject, this book should become indispensable. in a field dominated by the likes of ed rosenthal and jorge cervantes, it's nice to see a work that's more academic than either e.r. or j.c. are inclined to churn out (not that they don't provide a great service to the public as well!) if you've got the time, and are serious about cultivation, this work will resolve a lot of nagging questions and issues you might have in a professional, well-organized fashion.

      Book Description

For many years the use of chemical agents such as pesticides and herbicides has been effective in controlling the many varieties of pests that infest both agricultural crops and backyard gardens. However, these pests are gradually becoming resistant to these agents, because the agents themselves are acting as selective factors making the pests better and better able to resist and persist. As a result, the use of biological controlling agents is increasing.
This book is a comprehensive and authoritative handbook of biological control.

        Book Description

Autonomous robots are intelligent machines capable of performing tasks in the world by themselves, without explicit human control. Examples range from autonomous helicopters to Roomba, the robot vacuum cleaner. In this book, George Bekey offers an introduction to the science and practice of autonomous robots that can be used both in the classroom and as a reference for industry professionals. He surveys the hardware implementations of more than 300 current systems, reviews some of their application areas, and examines the underlying technology, including control, architectures, learning, manipulation, grasping, navigation, and mapping. Living systems can be considered the prototypes of autonomous systems, and Bekey explores the biological inspiration that forms the basis of many recent developments in robotics. He also discusses robot control issues and the design of control architectures.

After an overview of the field that introduces some of its fundamental concepts, the book presents background material on hardware, control (from both biological and engineering perspectives), software architecture, and robot intelligence. It then examines a broad range of implementations and applications, including locomotion (wheeled, legged, flying, swimming, and crawling robots), manipulation (both arms and hands), localization, navigation, and mapping. The many case studies and specific applications include robots built for research, industry, and the military, among them underwater robotic vehicles, walking machines with four, six, and eight legs, and the famous humanoid robots Cog, Kismet, ASIMO,"and QRIO. The book concludes with reflections on the future of robotics -- the potential benefits as well as the possible dangers that may arise from large numbers of increasingly intelligent and autonomous robots.

        Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars timely survey of moving robots.......2005-12-28

MIT is one of the key centres of robotics and it is no surprise that this text hails from it. Bekey provides a timely survey (circa 2005) of the state of autonomous robotics. He mentions some robots which have become commercially available recently, like Sony's Aibo, or the Roomba, Asimo or Cog. While simple and cheap, these robots involve key issues of mobility, sensors and decision making.

There are several types of land locomotion. Bekey gives a summary of various efforts since the 70s, to use 4, 6 or 8 legs in a robot.

Aside from locomotion, the book covers many other topics. Such as arm motion and manipulation. This even includes the "exotic" use of neural networks to do inverse kinematics mappings. Though Bekey cautions that the slow convergence of these networks is a serious drawback to realtime usage.

The book should be very readable to someone with a general background in science or engineering. It defers specialised technical details to the papers and texts given in its references.

        5 out of 5 stars Great overview.......2005-08-23

This is a broad brush overview of autonomous robotics. It covers a lot of ground and the depth is not great. But it is an outstanding introduction for just about anybody interested in autonomous robotics. To me it is interesting that the book takes such a biological approach. I have other books that actively try to cover up the biological inspiration. This book flounts it. Controls, structures, learning, software architectures, locomotion, it is all here. Although there is not a lot of depth in the volume, the chosen style and depth makes the book available to a very wide audience and the list of references is tremendous. That is after all where one learns this material.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Book .......2007-07-02

This book is nothing short of fascinating. It is a little dense but pay no attention to the other reviewer who thought the writing style and presentation was impenetrable. The wealth of information concerning these advancements in technology will keep you reading to the end. The book is well documented with references to our own military's documents. This is one of the most important books I have ever read. This topic is one of the most important issues facing us at the moment and no one but a handful of people are even talking about it. Dr. Begich is the most intelligent man out there discussing these issues so I highly recommend this book. If you find it is to your liking and want more - Dr. Begich has a radio program on the GCN network on the weekends. He also has a website [...].

        1 out of 5 stars Concepts may have validity, but . . . .......2007-06-12

This book is so poorly written, it is difficult to figure out what the author is talking about. I am not an idiot - my background is in the hard sciences, including a stint in medical research. I have two graduate degrees. If I can wade through a physics textbook, I should be able to make my way through this book, but I can't. The writing is pedantic and verbose. I am fascinated by this topic, but I cannot recommend this book; it is so poorly organized that I often cannot figure out his sentences, much less the point he is trying to make.

1 out of 5 stars Controlling the Human Mind: The Technologies of Political Control .......2007-02-19

I thought perhaps I could find out why so much political hate exist in this world, why so many people hate America, why one party wants the U.S. to be defeated in the war against terrorist. Perhaps it was Haarp that was producing mind control. This topic was not considered.

        5 out of 5 stars Beyond Conspiracy.......2007-01-15

As an adolescent I spent a great deal of my time creasing the spines of sci-fi paperbacks, and watching all the futuristic movies and TV that I could find. I have recently noticed an amazing trend, as one familiar and fantastical science fiction invention after another becomes realized. From cyborgs, to invisibility, to faster than light communication, researchers are rapidly creating realities out of my childhood fantasies and yesterdays impossibilities. That is why it is no surprise that, un-discussed by the mainstream media, there have been huge advancements in the "technologies of political control."

The new book from Dr. Nick Begich, Controlling the Human Mind, is a tantalizing look into these emerging technologies, which have the power to greatly enhance human potential, or become instruments of oppression. The first part of the book deals with the US military's research and use of these technologies, while the second part covers the applications that can augment human performance.

Begich unveils the shadowy advancements in subliminal messaging, mind control, and energetic weapons systems. He describes astonishing new inventions, like a device that uses the Microwave Auditory Effect to send high fidelity sound directly into a person's brain, but which is inaudible to anyone standing next to that person. He informs us about the Air Force's mysterious Radiofrequency Radiation Dosimetry Handbook, and its sinister possibilities. We are also treated to descriptions of new technologies that will assist in unlocking human potential using brain biofeedback, un-invasive acupuncture, and light and sound.

The information presented in this book is highly credible, with nearly 300 citations, and Dr. Begich himself is in a unique position to present it. As the son of former Alaskan Congressman Nick Begich Sr. and political activist Peggy Begich, he is very familiar with the inner workings of the US government and the motivations of its policy makers. As a doctor in Traditional Medicine he understands, and clearly explains, the potential positive and negative impacts of emerging technologies that affect the human body and mind. Controlling the Human Mind is his most important work to date and it promises to stimulate debate about issues most of us would still consider science fiction.

            Book Description

The biological ways in which diseases of plants, caused by pathogenic microbes can be controlled without the use of chemical pesticides is the subject of this book. The basis of biocontrol (in microbiology, ecology, and plant pathology) is described and many examples of control measures in commercial use or development are given. There is increasing interest in biocontrol from the general public, environmentalists and the major world agrochemical companies, and this easily read text presents recent developments in the subject. The book provides the necessary references and literature citations to allow a more detailed investigation of particular diseases or control systems to be made. This is an important book that will be especially helpful to graduate and undergraduate students in botany, biology, microbiology, plant pathology, agriculture, horticulture, crop science and related courses.
