I would be most appreciate to informe that "ENTOMOLOGY AND PEST MANAGEMENT" has been used as a comrehensive text for three courses in dep. of plant protection, fac. of agriculture,Zabol university,Iran by me,Ph.D OF entomology and faculty member of Zabol University&Gorgan University of Agriculture.Third edition of this book has translated to Persian(in press) and Unfortunatly this new edition of book not available in Iran and many difficulties are in Iran for book buying.I am waiting and expecting to recieve preforma or other information to having this book impatiencly&eagerly. with best regard Javad Karimi(Dep. of Plant Protection;Fac. of Agriculture,Tehran University,Karaj,Iran)

4 out of 5 stars Good Introduction to Entomology.......2001-08-28

Dr. Pedigo's book is one of the better general entomology/ pest management textbooks that I have read. It is written in an understandable format and provides a good introduction to the structure, function, taxonomy, and applied ecology of insects. This volume is most appropriate for the undergraduate student interested in entomology although it would also be a handy addition to a graduate student's library as well. As with many introductory entomology textbooks, the taxonomic keys are very limited. I would recommend Borror, Triplehorn, and Johnson's: An introduction to the study of insects to anyone who desires a book with a good set of taxonomic keys.

    Book Description

Offering a complete accounting of the insects of North America, this handbook is an up-dated edition of the first handbook ever compiled in the history of American entomology. By using American Insects, A Handbook of the Insects of America North of Mexico, Second Edition, the reader can quickly determine the taxonomic position of any species, genus, or higher taxon of insect known to occur in America and Canada. Every order, family, and genus is conveniently numbered and indexed, making this volume the only complete single source for all of the names of orders, families, and genera currently available. This book fills the need for an accurate way to identify, with the several hundred drawings and photos, the common insects of all orders. Now there is a tool available to those working without a major collection and library; and those who would like to have a general knowledge of insect life without becoming overwhelmed by the vast number of minute insect species. This usable guide provides sizes, shapes, color patterns and salient features of some species of each major family by pointing out those groups most likely to be encountered, including all North America pests. WHAT'S NEW IN THIS EDITION? · Captions are restored into the text and all are present! · Researchers in many orders use the results of cladistics, a new tool for determining the relationship of orders, families, genera, and species of organisms, including plants as well as animals · Specialists have provided lengthy lists of generic changes · Many of the identification keys have been revised by adding more illustrations and making sure all description terms are in the Glossary · The bibliographies of each Order section have been updated to include all important works that have appeared since the original edition

    Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Beware the description of this book.......2001-07-05

This is a supplement to my earlier review. Note that the description of American Insects, by Arnett,... is based on the first edition, in which "Every order, family, and genus is conveniently numbered and indexed" and you could "quickly determine the taxonomic position of any species, genus, or higher taxon of insect known to occur in America and Canada." This is not the case in the second edition. You can look up major genera only.

Subfamilies are listed under an entry for the family, not under the subfamily name, which means you _can't_ quickly determine their taxonomic positions. You have to know the taxonomic position in order to look up the subfamilies. This defeats one major purpose of the book, and renders it not very usable.

Whoever provided the text for the book description apparently just carried it over from the previous edition, without taking into account the changes in the new edition. This isn't by a long stretch the same book.

2 out of 5 stars Once excellent book devalued.......2001-04-28

As a naturalist and amateur entomologist, I found the first edition of this book especially useful for looking up unfamiliar genera and species of insects, to find out where they fit in the scheme of insect taxonomy.

Unfortunately, CRC Press, the publisher of the second edition, has cut corners by reducing the size of the index from 128 pages for 714 pages of text in the first edition to 57 pages for 931 pages of text in the second edition. This was accomplished by eliminating all but the major genera from the index. In my opinion, this seriously diminishes the value of the book. The best information in the world is useless if you can't access it efficiently. A book like this lives or dies by the quality of its index.

After purchasing the book in early January, 2001 and quickly discovering the problem, I wrote to the publisher to complain and to ask that they make available a complete index as a supplement. I have yet to receive a response from them. The book's author, Ross Arnett, was upset when the publisher of the first edition inadvertently left out the photo captions in proof and wouldn't restore them. I have to think he is spinning in his grave over the gutting of the index in the second edition, a much more serious affair.

I'd love to be able to recommend the second edition of this book. However, unless the publisher remedies the index problem, I can't. Unless you want it primarily for the keys, I suggest looking for a used copy of the first edition.

        Book Description

Over the past ten years an increasing number of field entomologists and farmers have recognized that conservation of natural enemies is important to effective biological control in many agricultural systems. This collection addresses an important gap in the biological control literature by providing the first comprehensive summary of recent findings on habitat manipulation to control pests. Enhancing Biological Control includes contributions from experts around the world: the United States, Finland, Germany, Great Britain, People's Republic of China, and Switzerland. Chapters cover habitat modification in such areas as fields, orchards, or vineyards, and along or near the perimeters of fields, including hedges or other uncultivated areas. Generalist and specialist natural enemies are described in full, as are theoretical and practical issues. Experimental designs for studying enhancement come into play, and the editors include a modeling study that explores how the dispersal of natural enemies interacts with the positioning of refuges. This volume is an invaluable source of information to researchers, progressive farmers, and agricultural consultants.

            Book Description

Anyone who gardens knows how snails, aphids, scale insects, and caterpillars can damage vegetables, flowers, shrubs, and trees. But not many of us know that ground beetles eat caterpillars, not plants; that dragonflies feed on mosquitoes; that parasitic wasps prey on tomato hornworms. In this delightful guide to the world of beneficial insects, Starcher, an artist and avid gardener, shows us how to identify the "good guys" and encourage them to reside in our gardens. "Altogether delightful."--Newark Star-Ledger; "A fact-filled, charmingly illustrated guide."--American Bookseller. A GARDEN BOOK CLUB selection.

if you enjoyed that film "microcosmos" that did for bugs what that new film about penguins did for those brave, hardy souls--and hey, why are both films made by french documentarians? do we lack the patience as americans to study nature in the raw for a solid year?--then this handy little tome will delight you. marvelously drawn creepy crawlers won't creep you out. the perfect mother's day gift for any "damsel" in distress who loves gardening.

            5 out of 5 stars Attracting predators.......2003-11-06

Written and illustrated by Starcher, this charming slim volume is packed with useful information. Each attractively designed page is devoted to an insect, showing in detailed color its larval and adult stages and sometimes its eggs as well as favored habitat. Starcher includes information about how to attract and keep useful predators, lists their favorite prey and shows their actual size. In addition to the beetles, thrips, flies, bees, wasps and more, she includes a chapter on non-insect helpers such as worms, nematodes and spiders.

Great intro to bugs, especially those that are great for the garden. It's amazing once you start looking at bugs and watching their behavior. This book gives a good place to start looking.

Though limited in scope, I found this book very informative: Just flipping through it answered a number of niggling questions I've had for years, such as "what is a damsel-fly, anyhow?" and "what WAS that hideous THING???"

Just pulling it off the shelf, you might be tempted to dismiss this book as lightweight: The text scrawls across the page in a handwriting-like typeface, and doodle-sketches of bugs and flowers and scenery run scattershot throughout. The information seems solid, however, and there's a great deal of it.

The bugs covered in this book range from prominent garden bugs, such as ladybugs and bumble bees, to almost undetectable critters, like the trichograma wasp. Overall, they have exactly two things in common: They are somehow beneficial to your yard, and they are prevalent enough that you _might_ have actually seen one!

Entries include a common name, family, and order at the top of the page, a brief introductory comment on the bug or bug family, a color sketch of said bug --frequently with hapless victim-- preferred prey/means by which they do their thing, preferred habitat, and information about how to get said bug to take up permanent residence in your yard. The author often includes personal comments about the bug (why she likes it, curious behaviors, that sort of thing). Additional pictures range from "actual size" sketches to unabashed border doodles.

For me, the most interesting thing about this book was the coverage it gave to (1) larval bugs (yech!) and (2) tips on attracting/maintaining a native population for your yard. I'm not into grubs, but it IS helpful to know which ones I shouldn't be killing. Also, I liked the fact that she did not limit herself to "bugs:" There's things like earthworms and spiders in here too.

The book does have some shortcomings worth mentioning. First, the layout: You'll either love it or hate it. Think highschool biology notes by someone with artistic talent.

Second, the index is, uh, considerably less than comprehensive. Prettymuch limited to common names. If you don't know the particular common name she's using, tough. So don't look for "ladybug," 'cause it's only listed under "ladybird beetle." Last, she generally doesn't mention anything about geographic distribution or preferred climate. (I guess you have to draw the line somewhere.)

Bottom line: I think this is a GREAT introductory book on bugs! It's warm, enthusiastic and friendly, and it doesn't get bogged down trying to show you every little variety of bugs out there. It sticks to bugs you'll probably actually see, which makes it a great book for families with kids. (or unenthusiastic spouses: "Look honey! I know it's got six legs and four eyes, but it eats SLUGS!") ...and personally, I thought the pictures were _great_ --they're half the reason I bought it.

4 out of 5 stars A helpful book that is also a delight.......2000-01-05

I've actually managed to use this book out in my own garden to identify some of six-legged friends and foes who share the space with me. The text is informative, the illustrations delightful. I've given copies out as gifts to fellow gardeners, and they have all been pleased.
