Book Description
This book describes the basic elements in the theory of animal breeding and inheritance of quantitative economic traits and the way in which this technology can be implemented in selective breeding programs for aquaculture species. The role and the implementation of molecular genetics in modern selective breeding programs is also addressed. The book’s main objective is to stimulate development of efficient selective breeding programs in aquaculture, the world’s fastest growing industry for animal protein production.
Considerable genetic gain from selection has been demonstrated for several aquatic species in traits like growth rate and survival. AKVAFORSK and allied institutions have demonstrated the value of selection in Atlantic salmon, rainbow trout, Nile tilapia, rohu carp and the shrimp Penaeus vannamei. Presently, however, less than 10 % of total world aquaculture production is based on genetically improved animals. The urgent challenge to the industry is to implement and start selective breeding programs in order to make the aquaculture industry more competitive and sustainable, through improving the utilization of feed, land and water resources.
The text has been written by scientists at AKVAFORSK, Akvaforsk Genetics Center and co-workers in order to summarise present knowledge in the field, and to encourage implementation of selective breeding programs for economically important fish and shellfish species around the world.
Book Description
A unique book that integrates knowledge from a wide range of expertise, specifically applied to the mouse, and addressed at a wide audience from those new to the field to experts who want an update on the state of the art. The best in genetics of the German Shepherd Dog.......2004-12-22
This book is the best on the topic of genetics of the German Shepherd Dog. A must have for any breeder and a great book for any lover of the breed. Easy to read and understand. I have owned this book for a number of years and purchased other books on the topic of dog genetics but this is the book that I find myself picking up for the answers.
A must have for anyone thinking about breeding........1999-03-06
If you are new to the breed or old this book is a bible for breeders. Even if you are into another breed this book is very good for it covers alot that is not breed specific. There is so much information in this book one is always going back over it. No german Shepherd breeder should be without this in thier library.
THE BEST information available to the serious breeder!.......1997-07-08
Although his earlier version (1970's version) of this book was excellent, and probably the best for it's era, this version is excellent! With up to date information from various countries around the world, this book gives a non-biased background of the genetics behind controlled breeding of Quality German Shepherd Dogs. He provides avenues for further education on any one point in his book, however, I find that all information provided by Willis is sufficient in making educated decisions in any good breeding program.
A must for any serious breeder, and a book that will fast become "impossible to get".

The definitive scholarly work on German Shepherd genetics........1997-03-20
Geneticist and German Shepherd breed devotee Malcolm B. Willis, Ph.D. is the acclaimed author of the definitive work, The German Shepherd Dog: A Genetic History. With his comprehensive explanations of genetic principles, Willis details the genetics of reproduction, behavior, hip dysplasia, and other inheritable diseases of the German Shepherd dog. This book is an essential addition to every breeder's library. It is also a remarkably educational resource for anybody who is committed to fully
understanding the genetic history of the breed and preserving its future.
Great information for GSD enthusiasts as well as breeders........1996-10-15
When a little fuzzball draws you in with his big puppy eyes, then gallops your way and leaps up to lick you in the face, the check is as good as signed. That's why I wanted to read this book BEFORE picking my next pup. As Willis points out in his book, not all fuzzballs are alike. Some are simply better equiped in temperment, health and intelligence. The book is packed with pictures and descriptions of famous German Shepherds from around the world, and provides an opportunity for dog breeders and owners to make responsible choices in selecting their own fuzzballs. Willis details the genetic faults of the breed, and even identifies which dogs tend to carry those traits, so you can study pedigrees before you make an ill-fated purchase. The only problem with the book, besides the price (which is daunting, though probably worth it considering the investment you will make in your new dog) is that Willis assumes too much knowledge of genetics in the beginning of the book. But if the reader consults a dictionary or encyclopedia at those early passages, then the rest should be fairly easy to grasp. Also, the book could use an update since more recent studs and bitches which are NOT found in this book are currently lining the pedigrees of today's fuzzballs. I've just started searching for my own fuzzball a month ago, but I already know more about the breed than 80% of the breeders I've talked to thanks to Willis's book

Book Description
The science of genetics has undergone a period of very rapid and significant development in recent years, and the area of poultry genetics has been no exception. This book provides a balanced and up-to-date account of all the major areas of this subject from Mendelian to modern molecular genetics. The book begins by tracing the evolution of the domestic fowl (Gallus domesticus) from its avian ancestors. Subsequent chapters cover important aspects of poultry genetics, including cytogenetics, transmission genetics, gene mapping, sex linkage, lethal genes, genetics of feathering and plumage, and quantitative genetics. In each chapter, a concise explanation of the genetic principles is followed by a full discussion illustrated by key examples. In the latter part of the book, recent advances in gene cloning and sequencing are examined. In the area of molecular genetics, where the most rapid developments have been made, more extensive background information is given and a glossary of terms is included. The impact of these exciting new developments on our understanding of gene structure and organization, immunogenetics, and the evolution of proteins is assessed. Finally, the uses of transgenic techniques and their implications are discussed. This book provides a clear and useful survey of the genetics and evolution of the domestic fowl, which will be of interest to postgraduate students and researchers in the fields of genetics, agriculture, and veterinary medicine, as well as to poultry breeders, both commercial and non-commercial.
Customer Reviews:
A very serious textbook for the avian geneticist..........2005-05-19
This book is not for sissies. It's a serious textbook for those who are studying avian genetics. It is not for the faint of heart, or those without a background in basic genetic terms and science. All that being said, it's an invaluable book if you're seeking to understand how chicken genetics work, and apply them to your breeding processes.
Chapters in this book include:
1. The history and evolution of the domestic fowl
2. The cellular organisation of genetic material
3. The transmission of inherited characters
4. Sex determination and sex-linked inheritance in the domestic fowl
5. Linkage and chromosome mapping
6. Genes controlling feathering and plumage color
7. Muscle, nerve, and skeleton
8. Lethal genes in domestic fowl
9. Quantitative genetics
10. Protein evolution and polymorphism
11. Immunogenetics of the domestic fowl
12. Gene cloning, sequencing and transfer in the domestic fowl
There are also five appendices, a glossary, and an index. The appendices include:
I. Linage groups and the chromosome map in the domestic fowl
II. Oncogenes
III. The Chi squared test
IV. One letter amino acid code
V. The genetic code
All in all this book is more then the average fancier would want to spend, but if you are a scientist or high-end hobbyist desiring to expand your knowledge of poultry genetics, then go for it!

Veterinary Guide to Horse Breeding
ASIN: 0851991017 |
Book Description
Tired of trying to relate pea plants, fruit flies and mice to practical horse breeding? Textbooks of general genetics rarely mention horses. Consequently our knowledge of horse genes lags well behind that of other domestic animals. Horse Genetics is one of the first books to provide a comprehensive overview of genetic principles using horses as the primary examples. The author, who has both practical and academic experience in the subject, provides jargon-free facts and ideas in the field of genetics as it relates to horses. Well-documented topics such as coat color are covered as well as parentage testing, medical genetics and gene mapping. This book presents a unique and up-to-date review of horse genetics with a clear vision for future research. Sure to become a classic, Horse Genetics is a valuable addition to the field of equine science and every modern equine practitioner's library.
Customer Reviews:
Outdated.......2003-12-29
This was probably a good book when first printed, but that 7 years ago and a lot of the information is no longer valid. Not a good reference, because although a lot is changed, none of it is reliable anymore due to age of info.
Excellent source of color genetics information.......2002-12-22
Easy to understand, comprehensive view of color genetics in horses. Does not have much outside color genetics, and very few pictures, but very thorough and in-depth, yet comprehendable reading of color genetics from a top authority.
Yes Yes Yes!.......2002-09-06
Yes! This book tells it all. Mind you, it is not simple to read. If you do not have a genetic/biologic background, it may at times be impossible to understand. Not many illustrations, and black and white only. But for the person who does have at least somewhat understanding of genetics it is a MUST HAVE!
Unfortunally here and there a little out-dated (homozygous testing for Tobiano and OLWS testing at the time not yet available).
Must Have for any Serious Equine Breeder.......2001-03-25
Dr. Ann T. Bowling was a Dir. of the Verinary Genetics Lab at UCDavis, so when you read this book you are learning from a hands on Researcher of genetics identification, linkage mapping, and choromosomal assignment of genes in horses including coat color, blood groups and explanation of DNA and microsatellite polymorphisms....Alright, sounds difficult, but being self taught through all the books I could lay my hands on, this is a modern up to the minute look at equine genetics today. If I can understand this, with a little bit of reading and applying to your own herd you will understand from a leading geneticist who has made her mark in national and international equine genetics studies. The paperback book at this price is absolutely affordable, and pictures and many graphs and charts guide you through the understanding of genetics in and easy format. For those into color pattern horses.....this is a must to update old thinking in terms of recessive and dominant genes as related to patterning genes. I have followed Ann via her reviews and write ups starting with her articles published in the Paint Horse Journal......just an absolute must read!!!
A useful addition to an Equine library........2000-12-01
This is a well-researched and compiled book; useful for the REALLY serious horse enthusiast. Filled with masses of interesting information, but possibly a little 'overloaded' with details about 'broken-coloured' horses. Contains a superb 'references' section and a well-compiled index. It is a pity that ALL the illustrations are in black and white, but this may partly account for the good value for money of this book.
Book Description
Robinson's Genetics for Cat Breeders & Veterinarians 4th Edition is an essential purchase for all breeders of pedigreed cats, practising small animal veterinarians and veterinary undergraduates. This fully revised edition re-establishes Genetics for Cat Breeders as the text of choice in the field of feline genetics.
Customer Reviews:
????? this is it???.......2006-04-06
it was on back order from another place, i finally got it and its this little book......not worth the wait, was upset about all the stuff i knew already was in it, it was supposed to be this great book......if you already have an understanding for genetics and diseases then dont bother paying for this book. for the novice person, its a little over whelming i think....informational for them but not for me.
Good news for all serious fanciers.......2001-08-16
The authors of Robinsons' Genetics for Cat Breeders and veterinarains are two breeders who have written on breeding and showing (Vella and McGonagle), a geneticist (Shelton) and a practicing veterinarian (Stanglein). This book simply and directly covers the subject of genetics, incorporating the lastest scientific advances, while at the same time reflecting the practical knowledge of experienced breeders.
The whole subject of genetics is covered: principles of heredity; breeding systems and inbreeding; coat and color inheritance; color variations; breeds; and genetic anomolies. The heart of this book is the material on breeding systems and practices, and selective breeding and inbreeding. The evaluation of cats for breeding purposes and comparisons between possible mates are explored in considerable depth. The chapter on genetic anomolies is up-to-date and quite comprehensive.
The new Fourth Edition is good news for all serious fanciers. Not only does it continue Robinson's work, it actually makes the best guide to feline genetics better!
Robinson's Genetics for Cat Breeders and Vererinarians.......2000-06-24
This is a very straightforward book which details every aspect of feline genetics. It is very readable and informative on the facts and also on breeding theories. The writers coming from four different disciplines is helpful, along with a glossary which explains the terminology. It would be a very good investment for an experienced person or novice breeder (me).
Book Description
The art and science of breeding top dogs made easy! Once the despair of every breeder, the science of breeding better dogs is, at last, brought down to the point of Easy Understanding. The art and science of breeding top dogs is made immensely easier by the introduction of this new and fascinating book. Learn how to recognize potential behavior problems and how important it is to be able to select for temperament. The previous book was great according to reviewers around the globe. Believe it or not, this ine tops it. Now with a new comprehensive index and a non-stop bibliography, this is a book you can not afford to be without.
Customer Reviews:
Good technical/medical info, pls ignore the in/line-breeding.......2003-02-08
The book is excellent with regard to the technical aspects and considerations of health and whelping, but ignore the author's advice regarding genetic principles of inbreeding and line-breeding.
Do so only if you are an experienced breeder, and are intimately familiar with your line and what traits reappear time and time again in your dogs. Many undesireable traits are tied to the desirable ones. The other reviewer who cautioned disaster has a valid, informed point!
Great book with excellent content.......2001-03-22
Dr. Grossman writes a very thorough book that is filled with good content. Many things that we know but need to be reminded and many things that are new (at least to me). Really enjoyed reading his work. Helped focus my objectives on how to begin a successful breeding/showing program.
A blueprint for disaster.......2001-03-11
This book tells you how to use inbreeding and linebreeding, and it teaches you the basics of Mendelian genetics, but these help to manage one or two traits at a time.
The problem is that genes don't assort one trait at a time! Genes are linked to chromosomes. While we were all busy inbreeding and linebreeding to 'fix' the desirable traits of breed type and conformation, something else happened, and now we are producing a steady increase in unwanted traits that we call genetic defects.
Time magazine has an interesting article on this problem...
The underlying advice is undisputable.......1998-07-29
I particularly recommend the thorough reading and appreciation of the first chapter. Those who have sufficient experience will appreciate and endorse the many points which are made upon the early stages of ownership and the requirements of breeding.
Everthing you wanted to know about breeding.......1998-07-29
A practical no-nonsense approach to dog breeding is the prime focus of this very readable book. Dr. Grossman writes for the novice and advanced breeder as well, spotlighting possible pitfalls and providing guidance...In short, everything you wanted to know about breeding a winner but were afraid to ask.
