5 out of 5 stars a most recommendable first book.......2007-09-26

This was my first book I read about the subject and I still come back to it for reference, truly recommended for beginners at least.

4 out of 5 stars Full of interesting stuff.......2007-08-31

Kool book. I haven't finished reading it yet (over 500 pages)But definitely makes for an interesting read.

5 out of 5 stars Very Effective, simply brilliant.......2007-08-29

Well, I have for nearly all of my life been very wary of Magickal Arts. I'm Roman Catholic from birth, and so as you can appreciate, some non-sensical religious superstition is sometimes hard to push away. So buying this book was a huge and excellent life progression for me, and initially, enormously scary. This text has done two things, it has answered some of my personal questions, and improved my overall being. Donald Michael Kraig seems to be able to communicate the learning without all the hocus pocus, and provides very serious, practical and down to earth teaching and great explanations. Without this, I think that I would have simply thrown the book away.

I'm nearly three weeks into following the methods, and have noticed gradual and significant changes to my life. All positive and no negatives. Where I used to be weak, I now feel strong. Psychological maybe, but all the same, very very positive.

Simply put, I am really glad and very fortunate to have purchased this book.

4 out of 5 stars A Great Course for Learning Ceremonial Magick.......2007-06-03

My current thought on this book is, "Why didn't I pick this up years ago?"

Learning about Ceremonial Magick has been rather difficult for me in previous years due to multiple factors. I came to it from a Wiccan and Pagan background, and at the time had a slight predjudice against anything Judeo-Christian. Even after that, however, I found solid information on the subject rather scattered and didn't know where to begin. What good, credible sources I did find were the type of authors from the early 1900's (like Crowley and Regardie) who felt it necessary to write in that "snooty scholar" style that leaves any ordinary person unable to comprehend even two sentences without going over it three times.

Donald Michael Kraig does not write like this. In fact, among books about Ceremonial Magick, his was a breath of fresh air to me. He writes in plain english and takes the time to explain some terms. Other terms he leaves to be understood as more text is read. This is understandable, and for me it's desirable, as I like to be left with a little bit of room to figure some details out. The 11-lesson format of this book makes it into a course of study on the topic. He states several times that his goal with this book was to allow the student to be able to pick up any book on these topics and essentially be able to grasp the concepts - or at least be able to follow. In this, he was a success. I had bought several books about High Magick before this one, most on specialized topics, and after reading through this book I've been re-reading the others right along with it. I could barely understand them before; I can understand them MUCH better now.

In addition, the exercises and rituals he provides are easy to follow. And following his eclectic bent, have substance without being weighted down and layered over with material that can easily be done without to the same effect. Best of all, Kraig himself has been practicing this stuff for over a decade (at LEAST), and so has the wisdom of experience to share. He knows what it's like to practice and study this stuff. He knows what kinds of experiences may crop up, and he knows how frustrating this path can be. He conveys this understanding to the student.

Now for some downsides to this course. First, there's one part where he later admits he purposely messed up to see if the student would catch it. Personally, I don't appreciate playing around like that (that's not one of the things I feel should be left to figure out). There are some other things that he presents differently when compared to other sourceworks on High Magick (like which color band on the Rainbow Wand to grasp when consecrating the elemental weapons). Lastly, there are certain things that I feel should have been better explained, although they were few and can be supplemented by checking out other sources.

All in all, if you're a beginner in Ceremonial Magick and want to know more from a comprehensive source, this is a fine book to pick up for just such a purpose!

4 out of 5 stars One of the only books youll need........2007-04-29

This is one of the only books you'll need to begin your journey on the magical path. This book is a good primer to The Golden Dawn System in that it deals with the Kabalah, ritual magic, and some of the eastern traditions. I would recommend one read this alongside "Initiation into Hermetics" by Franz Bardon. If one PRACTICES the methods laid before them in these volumes they will indeed acquire the skills needed to perform real magic. I would also say that a great deal of magical philosophy and their practices could be learned by the curious dabbler as well, who intends only on reading but not doing. Good luck and farewell.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Perfect Preparation for National Novel Writing Month.......2007-09-29

*****
No Plot? No Problem! is written by Chris Baty, the founder of National Novel Writing Month, which takes place every November. During the month, people from all over the world unite over the Internet at NaNoWriMo.org and each writes their own 50,000 word novel (actually, a first draft) by writing 1,667 words per day.

I wasn't sure if I wanted to participate in the endeavor or not, because it sounded pretty overwhelming, but reading this book was truly the perfect preparation. It helped me to see what NaNoWriMo would be like, and gave me what I needed to decide if it was for me. (It is!)

If you are not thinking of joining NaNoWriMo, this book would be of limited usefulness for you, although it would be possible to use as a general writing guide---it's really all about NaNoWriMo. You find out what you need to do to get ready (including helpful exercises and equipment), what to expect during each of the four weeks, and most of all, motivation---why in the world would you want to do this? And how do you make it through? I found my answers in the book and they resonated with what my personal goals are.

It is written in a fun, sometimes hilarious style, and is very entertaining. Baty has recently written The No Plot? No Problem! Novel-Writing Kit, which I also ordered since I finished the book itself, because if it was half as helpful as the book it would be well worth it.

If you are reading this in the fall...hurry and buy and read this book as November is almost here!

Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Not Like Other Writing Books - Which Is A GOOD Thing!.......2007-08-30

There are plenty of other well-written reviews here, so all I want to say is that after buying dozens of other books about the art and craft of writing, Baty got me to do something no one else had: WRITE A NOVEL! If anything, all of those other books (and there are some excellent ones) confused and intimidated me - and I've been writing professionally for decades. But Chris Baty magically took the pressure off, described how to approach the project in tasty, bitesized chunks and, miraculously, made it fun!

There are other books about technique which serious writers will do well to own. But this is the first and only book which somehow finally got me to do it. Not by pushing me, but by inviting me. Very highly recommended!

3 out of 5 stars good... but the web site is better.......2007-08-25

The book does a nice job of going over the basics, but you get all the same information, and more, from the NaNoWriMo web site. I am a big fan of Chris Baty and the NaNoWriMo yearly event, and I own this book and enjoyed reading it, but I think it is more for fans of the site than a required manual on how to get a rough draft of a short novel done in 30 days.

Certainly a quick, and enjoyable read.

4 out of 5 stars No Plot? No Problem...for a Rough Draft.......2007-07-13

This is a great book that works for some writers and not so much for others. Chris Baty's techniques are excellent advice for authors struggling to get their first drafts completed, although the timeline of 30 days is not "low-stress" as the cover states (I've found that 90 days is more appropriate for myself as a writer). First drafts are the largest hurdle to overcome, but are still just a piece of the puzzle: the real magic occurs during the rewriting stage. As fun as this book is, let's hope that Baty has a companion book on the revision process in the works.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book For Writers!.......2007-06-25

Chris Baty is the founder of National Novel Writing Month aka NaNoWriMo, which I've decided to try out this year. In preparation for doing so, I decided to read his book, No Plot? No Problem! A Low-Stress, High Velocity Guide to Writing a Novel in 30 Days. That's exactly what NaNoWriMo is for those who are wondering: It's 30 days of non-stop novel writing madness. It starts on November 1st and ends on midnight, November 30th, with a goal of 50,000 words.

This book is excellent! I've been looking for a great book on writing and this one is superb. Though it's superb for a 30 day writing process...don't know if it's the right book for your typical novel writer, though it does have some great universal tips. This book is basically a guide for NaNoWriMo from someone who's obviously been through the process since he invented it. The first section of the book focuses on what you should expect, what you need to prepare yourself, selecting the right notebooks, selecting the right locations to write, selecting the right time to write, plot, characters, and basically how to survive during the process. The second section of the book is a week by week account of the writing process and you are supposed to read each chapter at the beginning of each week of the writing process (I obviously jumped ahead). The final section deals with what to do when the process is over and gives tips on rewrites, possibilities of publishing, etc.

I really enjoyed this book. Not only was it informative, but it was a fun read. Baty has a great writing style and totally entertained me. The book was right around 50,000 words so that the reader gets an idea of what a 50,000 word book looks like. Throughout the book there are quotes from past "winners" of NaNoWriMo so you're constantly getting input from others who have gone through the process and it sounds like a great experience.

Baty's main point here is that anyone can do NaNoWriMo and anyone can write a book. It just takes determination. The thing he stressed over and over again was "quantity not quality." Remember that the goal is 50,000 words in 30 days and that you're writing a rough draft. So just focus on getting to 50,000 words and rewrite later.

Great book for anyone looking for a little bit of motivation in the area of writing. I was considering participating in NaNoWriMo before, and I think that this book just about sealed the deal for me.

This book is as voluminous as its title, and no matter what type of magic you practice, or even if you just study it, it is an indispensable book with a wealth of useful intelligence on all Eastern and Western forms of magic. Bill Whitcomb also graciously provides contact information for areas that are not covered. Any serious student of magic can appreciate the expense of research time, and this book will help minimize the research, thereby allowing more time for your workings. The Magician's Companion is going to be a well-worn volume on my shelf.

5 out of 5 stars An exellent introduction to magik!.......2007-05-13

An easy read, gives insight on several levels, both to practical magik, & to overall attitudes. I highlty reccomend this book, whether you choose to practice the Kabbalah, or go on to other types og magik!

5 out of 5 stars What every magician should have on hir shelf........2006-08-13

I actually read through this entire book. It's mainly meant to be used as a resource guide, but in my personal opinion, anyone who wants to use it for that purpose should read through it once to get an idea of what Whitcomb covers. It is one of the most in-depth correspondance guides I've read. Whitcomb also offers coherent brief explanations on the various systems he writes about. Whether this book is for a beginner or an experienced it has something for everyone and should be one of the few books any magician is required to purchase.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Reference and Symbol Source.......2006-08-11

I loved this book because it is organized in such a neat way (numbers within systems) and because of the wealth of information it covers. The only disappointing thing is that it didn't go very deep into some of the systems I know I am interested in at least, such as runes or the ogham. However, it is undeniable that this is a necessary addition to the working magician's library, and shouldn't be missed!

5 out of 5 stars All Somebody needs to start into occult!.......2006-04-27

This is like occult for dummies, the information is so well explained and placed. There is sooo much to read in this very thick book. I love how he recommends certain books to research in the certain occult fields. If there was a occult 101 class I would bet the book required would be this book!

5 out of 5 stars Incredible reference!.......2006-02-14

This book is the best reference I have to correspondences. I am not sure about theory in this book, but there is so much information spanning so many traditions.

I would describe it as invaluable in applied work as long as you have a grip on ritual theory already.

Book Description

Of course, Magic is Magic wherever. But Ceremonial Magic - with or without a k ending - is perceived as largely European in origin and practice. The Golden Dawn, Aurum Solis, O.T.O were European and even AMORC, B.O.T.A., G.B.G. were mostly European inspired.

As valid as these esoteric orders were and are, they are at best schools and the knowledge taught is now widely available. What is key is not the knowledge but the self-accomplishment that comes only through personal experience (otherwise known as 'self-initiation').

The essence of Magic is a simple formula based on the exercise of Will, Imagination, and Gnosis or Magical Trance. It is a 'technology' and must be mastered like any technology through understanding and practice. Like playing the piano, it takes discipline to continue practicing basic exercises until it all becomes second nature and can function as an art as well.

And, what for?

Not to perform tricks or miracles. Not to wear fancy robes and chant barbarous words. Not to reach high degrees with grand titles in a secret order. No, it is to transform and transmute your own self and thus to become more than you were, not merely to accelerate normal human evolution but to actually move beyond and be a co-creator. And to finally answer those questions: Who am I? Where did I come from? Where am I going? High Magic is an active program for self-discovery and Self-Realization.

This book by a famed contemporary German magician self-instructs the student through a series of basic exercises and real magical practices that train the magician through a consistent program combined with examples and explanations. Each step is thorough without extravagance; the program is effective and entirely self-directed (as must be all real learning); the book is encyclopedic in depth and inclusive even of chaos and cyber magic. Tables and Charts simplify the learning process.

The system starts with immediate immersion in ritual practice starting with the Kabbalistic Cross and Lesser Banishing Ritual of the Pentagram and moves through beginning to advanced levels of Practical Sigil Magic, Ritual Magic, Elemental Magic, the Greater Ritual of the Pentagram, Planetary Magic, the Hexagram Ritual, Mantra Meditation, the Magical Gaze, Magical Trance, the Pan Ritual, Money Magic, Talisman Magic, Moon Magic, Chaos Magic and Cyber Magic. In each case, practice is used to instruct - nothing is presented as 'theory only.' You will find everything analyzed, explained and justified with refreshing and truly uncommon common sense!

The author fully dispels the myths and subterfuges of archaic magical orders and explores the role of the Unconscious Mind, the issues of Religion and Mysticism, the nature of High and Low Magic, the function of Myth and the role of Drama in Ritual, the Magical Nature of Reality and Magical Perception, Dream Work in relation to Magical Training, the Magical Imagination and training for Visualization, Psychic Protection, Invocation and Evocation, the Calling and Movement of Energies, Charging, Paradigm Shifting, what is really means 'to Keep Silent,' the power of Intention & definition of Magical Goals, the ritual use of Symbols and Gestures, the power of Words, the Magician's Universe, the magical pronunciation of Hebrew Letters, the Magician's Tools, Mantric Sigils, the IAO formula, and much more.

High Magic is as central to Western culture as are science, technology, the rule of law, democracy and the entrepreneurial economy. Its practice and application should be part of your daily life starting now.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Not Magic, Not High, Not High Magic........2007-05-30

Despite the title, this book is a work predominately based on and emphasising sorcery.
It is not a true magic text and not a text based on high magic as the title claims.

The author has included a mixed bag of techniques from different traditions and sources.

That said, he gives some differing perspectives and explanations on sigil magic and the workings of the subconscious and conscious minds, and some techniques not found in other books, such as the magic gaze.

The book attempts to cover a lot of ground and would give someone an overview of various techniques which are common to most magicians.

It is though based on the paradigm of Chaos magic and has the intention of following methods which fall on the side of sorcery and not magic.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Compenduim of Knowledge on Magic.......2006-08-22

This book is an excellent read, with tons of practical advice and excercises to get anyone started in the field of magic. My only qualms are that as a reviewer, I haven't read a huge amount on the more ceremonial, Judeo/Christian influenced magical systems, so I hope my review is fair by someone with more knowledge in this realm. I didn't find myself bewildered by the book at all, neither was I disappointed with any shortage of information. This is one of those books that approaches magic so nondogmatically, it allows the reader to take away any information and practices they want to add to their own pre-existing practices, or to help create their own. I thought it was an excellent book with a wealth of information, and excellent introduction to and exploration of the world of High Magic.

5 out of 5 stars well written reference for the high magician.......2006-07-12

this book isnt for the beginner as the ritual and magick isnt explained to the detail one would require to practice successfully.
however the information provided is good and detailed on the meanings of the rituals themselves and he has included quite a lot of interesting exercises also.

i would have to recommend don craigs book on high magick being by far the best beginning reference i personally have been able to find as yet (and i love books).

purchase this book if you want to deepen your knowledge but not recommended as a guide for the beginner.

;)

2 out of 5 stars Children's book.......2006-03-08

This book is not so very good. I bought it and I'm not very happy about it. I thought that I found a good book but it's only a book for novice. Absolutely novice. A lot of things in one place but nothing good to find.

5 out of 5 stars Magick on paper.......2006-01-09

This text is superb. It is one of the best written books I have had my eyes on. Frater UD is exceptionally good at explaining very difficult concepts. He manages to explain these concepts in a holistic manner and achieves his goal within a very limited number of sentences. I feel talked to when reading this book. Almost as if having my own tutor. I would classify the book as bread to "transition" members, or "advanced beginners"- those who have failed following the long and hard "technically-rich-no-attitude-try-to-scare-off-text" way. Frater UD will help you realise that you have actually achieved more than you hoped for. This book is an attitude changer, building confidence and a positive outlook! If knowledge is what you seek, this is a good place to start. Zazas Zazas Nasatanada Zazas

5 out of 5 stars Open Your Minds and Hearts.......2007-08-01

I just finished reading this book and found it fascinating, informative, and intriguing. I feel that any lay person, as well as a seasoned scientist, can learn something very profound from this book. I did not find it difficult to read at all, but that may be because I already have an interest in learning more about Egypt and other paths of esotericism, higher knowledge, and higher consciousness. I don't think anyone can dispute that Egypt, as well as other ancient cultures, possessed a knowledge that far surpasses our own on so many different levels. For one thing they were able to finance huge projects (try to get any one society/civilizaton today to fund a pyramid; even a small one like Menkaure's). For the second thing, they were able to organize themselves in such a way that devotion to higher thought was the primary motivating factor in their expression of monumental building and encoding secret/sacred knowledge into symbols. These are the salient, yet subtle points made by Mr. West. Wouldn't it be nice if more of us 'moderns' could be like that? Anyone who has seen hieroglyphics has to know that it cannot be interpreted into our language (how we communicate thought) verbatum, nor into our current thought patterns. You don't have to be a rocket scientist to know that it takes a symbolist view to be able to make sense of them, and that may require breaking away from established patterns of thought; civilization started in Greece; modern science is the be-all-end-all marvel; the Sphinx looks like the statue they call Cheperen, etc., to enable the messages to pour into your heart. This is one of the things that comes through in this book.

This book, Serpent in the Sky, is a great introduction into, not only Schwaller deLubicz' work, but is in its own right a step toward helping one recognize that there might be something to be gained by reforming our thought patterns and exploring other subject matter such as harmonics, proportions & volume; and incorporating these concepts into our everyday living experience. I don't know anything about these things at this time, but I am inspired by this book to want to learn more. I barely got through geometry in school (decades ago-smile), but I may now be able to absorb more of it now that I see that it has a real/spiritual purpose. How about you? Would you challenge yourself by first trying to investigate the concepts outlined in this book and then have the heart to move onto Schwaller's The Temple in Man? Do you think you can be taken to a higher level of consciousness?

If you think you are a layperson, don't be discouraged from your quest for higher knowledge by listening to the comments of those who assume that laypeople cannot learn from this book and Schwaller's. You can learn anything you want to and Serpent in the Sky might be just the thing to help you step onto the road to higher spiritual development. If you have already stepped onto that road, then you know that it is not easy or quick to get to where you'd like to be. Mr. West has an impeccable style of writing, a flare for clarity and humor (because he's not in denial), and anyone with a reasonable amount of education can enjoy this book and be inspired by it. If you don't know a word used in the book, pull out your dictionary. Not well versed in geometry? Get your hands on a self-study book or a tutor. That's part of how spirit works through us and our guides to give us more illumination. We have to do the work ourselves and you'll know if someone is a guide sent from The Most High or from somewhere else.

Open your mind and your heart! (smile) See for yourself. See you in Egypt in late 2008.

4 out of 5 stars Making Schwaller de Lubicz understandable.......2006-09-27

If you prescibe to conventional views about Egyptology don't buy this book. However, if you believe that science does not have the story of our origins and Egypt quite right, then this book will open your eyes.

The writing style is accessible, not too technical, and not too etheric. The work of Schwaller de Lubicz is presented, along with JAWs owns metaphors, in a way to help you understand that Egyptian culture and architecture was much deeper than archeologists think.

JAW is most famous pointing to geologic weathering analysis of the Sphinx show that it is at least 10,000 years old. The book stays rooted in science enough to keep the discerning reader interested. There is also a hint of the civilization that pre-dates Egypt (?Atlantis) which will also keep the alternate reader interested. All-in-all a very good and balanced book.

Also recommended is 'Temple of the Cosmos' by Jeremy Naydler.

2 out of 5 stars Confusing.......2006-09-01

The book is an attempt to make accessible to the layman the findings of Schwaller de Lubicz (1887-1961), a self-taught French Egyptologist with a strong mystical bend who claimed among other things that Egyptian civilization is much older than mainstream archeologist believe and that it was based on esotericism.
The book is abundantly illustrated with black and white photographs and drawings and every page has a wealth of quotes from the most diverse writers. In fact, these quotes make up about a third of the contents.
"Serpent in the Sky" could be described as a kind of short encyclopedia on Egyptian civilization but seen from an esoteric point of view. All aspects of ancient Egypt are covered, from temple architecture to the meaning of hieroglyphics. And of course, there is a chapter on the Sphinx, explaining that it is much older than most experts think.
The big trouble with this book is that it simply fails to give the reader a coherent and substantial idea not only of Schwaller de Lubicz's views but also of its topic. In typical fashion, the writer will start discussing a topic, make a few remarks which sound profound (but are not always intelligible)and then move to something else. What one gets in the end is bits of information on many topics, but one doesn't really to come to a full understanding and appreciation of what the author is talking about. One suspects that Mr.Anthony West hasn't really digested the obscure teachings of his French master.
So, while this book may stimulate your interest for a different interpretation of what ancient Egypt was all about, you certainly won't find here the answers you are looking for.
It is true, as another reviewer has noted, that the author, in expounding his "heretical" interpretation of Egypt, shows himself to be thoroughly critical not only of conventional Egyptology, but also of Western science and the modern worldview in general. As I thoroughly agree with most of his condemnatory pronouncements, I wasn't bothered by this anti-modern stance. In fact, many of his remarks are quite to the point. In my opinion, this is a positive aspect of the book.
But the fact remains that after reading this book I still don't understand the civilization of Egypt and the teachings of Schwaller de Lubicz regarding it. Sometimes it is better not to know anything about a topic than to have incomplete and unclarified notions about it.
I am sorry to say that this book leaves one in a state of complete confusion about Egyptian metaphysics and civilization.

4 out of 5 stars Homage to DeLubic z.......2006-07-14

This is West's attempt to present some of the philosophies of DeLubicz from his perception of them. West presents the theories, assumptions, conclusions and epiphanies of DeLubicz with his own radical approach to the subject matter. Encompassing a wide range of subjects West does not presume to attest to an expert status in all subjects but presents his view point of the DeLubicz material in a highly readable manner. Although quite technical in some areas it serves only to stimulate the reader to investigate further. Read with an open mind and shelving all preconcieved notions of tightly held dogma and turf wars from the differing scientific departments West's book asks us to open our minds to an entirely different thought pattern concerning what we know or think we know about the Egyptians. Whether we believe or not West presents ideas considered fringe by established thought but those five per cent of fringe thinkers are what kicks our minds out of the rut and stimulates our intellectual need to know and understand.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent scholarship........2006-01-26

I whole-heartedly agree evolution is nonsense. And I also agree the dating of the sphinx and pyramids are in error. In support of West's book, I point out that the constellations they represent did not exist until 10,000 B.C. The three pyramids represent the constellation Orion and the Sphinx represents the constellation Leo. These constellations as depicted in these famous Eygptian megaliths were created by people who witnessed them; namely, people who existed 10,000 B.C. Therefore, the history books are all wrong, including the Princeton and Harvard and Yale so-called scholars who have a hard time swallowing these facts.

However, I disagree with the author's confidence in astrology. Moreover, I disagree but understand his assertion that the Golden ratio isn't a number but is a function.

The Golden ratio is an irrational number. The author seems to imply that irrational numbers are functions, not numbers. What does he mean? I mean, I kind of get what he means, but he leaves you hangin'.

First of all, the ancient Greeks thought a number is that which can be constructed with a square and compass. However, the Greeks also didn't like numbers like the square root of two and denominated such numbers as "irrational." Descartes sheds light on this topic on page 2 of his book "Geometry."

From a half circle in which Descartes inscribes some triangles, Descartes arrives at three equations (all pythagorean): c^2 = a^2 + b^2; d^2 = 1^2 + b^2; (a + 1)^2 = c^2 + d^2. Substituting the second equation into the third he gets a^2 + 2a + 1 = c^2 + 1^2 + b^2. Then, using the first equation, we substitute a^2 + b^2. Thus, a^2 + 2a + 1 = a^2 + b^2 + 1^2 + b^2. Thus, 2a = 2b^2 or a = b^2 or b = /a (square root of "a").

Thus, according to Descartes, one can theoretically construct an irrational number with square and compass. Thus, if one defines an irrational number as a function, as Anthony West does, namely that b = /a, it doesn't remove the fact that it can be constructed by square and compass. Thus, although Greeks didn't like irrational numbers, according to their own definition of number numbers like the sqaure root of two are numbers. Why Anthony West wants to define numbers in such a narrow way, I don't know. He ends up like the Greeks who got in conundrums because of their rigid definitions. The natural numbers (.i.e, 1,2,3,4,5. . .) are constructable by square and compass. Why should we not broaden our definition of number to include something other than the natural numbers? Narrowing one's defnition of number gets us into semantic disputes that get us nowhere.

Finally, why do P.h.D.'s at Ivy League colleges insist on dating the pyramids and sphinx more recently rather than 10,000 B.C.? Because, dating them at 10,000 B.C. trashes the Ice Age myth.

I know these are not the most amazing books ever written but i enjoy them. I love catherine hapka's series star power it is alot like this story. they are both about "down to earth teens" it makes them seem unreal, but is nice for people who want a sweet story instead of most storys about teens. In this book it is school spirt week and at the end of the week there is a sadie hokins dance. Troy is waiting for Grabreila to ask him, but there is something else on her mind. She over hears her mom on the phone talking to her boss. And grabriala thinks they are going to have to move again. The ending is not queit what i thought it would be but it does have that super sweet happy ending.

This is a short and sweet book. I read it in a day (plus or minsus a few hours.) It was a sweet story. I think that it is very nice for young girls to read i would recommened it to anyone who likes disney or the movies (high school musical 1 or 2.) This book takes place inbetween the two movies. And at the moment there is a battle of the bands, troy is doing it with his b-ball friends. Sharpay is doing a girl group, with her devoted "fans" (and taylor.) so where does that leave gabreila and ryan?? the book of course has a happy ending but is very nice.

5 out of 5 stars My blood pressure went down by 20 points.......2007-09-14

I actually starting using the Dash diet and some of the supplements, not all. In a few days my blood pressure started to go down dramatically. It's amazing how much salt there is in everything. You really have to read labels and of course a lot more fruits and veggies!

5 out of 5 stars Great information.......2007-06-02

All in all, very good reading. Nothing new here, just ties together all facets of controlling your high blood pressure: vitamins, supplements, exercise, diet and stress reduction. Presents a variety of programs and explains in detail how each can potentially lower and control hypertension. A good "how to" book to keep handy and refer to often. I have started the program and after only 3 weeks, my blood pressure has dropped. I plan to "wean" myself off the high blood pressure medication I am on now and go "totally natural".

5 out of 5 stars book review.......2006-02-25

This book offers a wide variety of treatment options (dietary/ behavioral modification, use of various supplements) in the treatment of hypertension, as well as a comprehensive review of the prescription medications available for this condition. I found the dietary suggestions quite helpful, and this is one of the few books I have read which offers sound advice on use of dietary supplements as well as their presumed mechanism of action.

3 out of 5 stars This book should not be your only source of information.......2005-08-04

I'm only giving this book 3 stars because I think someone needs to temper the other reviews with some common sense.

This book is a good starting point for anyone dealing with or concerned about hypertension, but before investing in and ingesting all of the supplements recommended on pages 132-133, I think a person needs more information from additional reputable sources to be certain they fully understand the risks and benefits of taking any of these nutrients in supplemental form. There are risks of adverse side effects and toxicity from supplements that are not there when you get what you need from the foods you eat. Those risks vary with things such as your age, pregnancy, illness, surgery, and medications you may be taking, not just the dosage. Each person's circumstance's are unique, so these recommendations should not be considered one-size-fits-all. I don't think this book emphasizes enough how important it is to keep your doctor current about any herbs and supplements you are taking and in what doses.

Below is some of the references I use to better understand the functions and risks of all of the nutritional supplements out there. They will open your eyes about how cautious you need to be about any supplements you take.

5 out of 5 stars A Must-Read.......2004-11-03

Dr. Mark Houston's book promoting nutrition and a healthy lifestyle as potent weapons in the fight against high blood pressure is absolutely excellent. It is refreshing to see an esteemed medical professional embrace alternative therapies rather than relying solely on prescription drugs and vague instructions to "lose weight, exercise, and eat healthier foods." It contains not only useful information and easy-to-understand guidelines for those battling hypertension, but also practical, sound advice for anyone seeking a healthier lifestyle. I recommend this book with the highest enthusiasm!

5 out of 5 stars Book One of Two.......2007-04-20

If you ever wanted to understand the true foundation of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, this book is a must have! I cannot recommend this book enough! Mr. Greer's explanations of the magical workings of the Cabala and its relations to the Golden Dawn system of magic are well worth the lofty price to acquire this book. "Paths of Wisdom" sets the stage for Mr. Greer's follow-up book "Circles of Power". If you are an aspiring solitary magician looking for a fresh approach to the Golden Dawn traditon of magic, then invest your money wisely and buy these books. You are guaranteed a well rounded education in the high magical arts.

5 out of 5 stars Another Gem from John Michael Greer........2006-10-19

First off, I must present my biased disclaimer of being a huge fan of John Michael Greer. Few authors in this field have his ability to tackle a complex subject, gather an immense amount of information, sift through the dross, and present it in such accessible and practical fashion.

Paths of Wisdom is no exception. If you own only 1 book on the Hermetic Qabala (as distinct from the traditional Hebrew type), MAKE SURE this is it! Qabala, by its very nature, can be a complex, pedantic, and often dry and confusing study. However, the patient and persistent student will find great rewards. Too often one learns the rudiments while lacking the deep understandings, which can be subtle and paradoxical. This book helps clarify all that. Granted, there's a lot of material here too, and it'll take time to fully absorb all the hidden jewels. But the engaging and lucid writing style makes this anything but a dry reference or "how to" manual.

Greer does not lose sight that to experience the Qabala is to practice and live the tradition each day, not just read and discuss it. Paths of Wisdom is a reminder that Qabala is not a static, pedantic methodology that exists in a vacuum, but a beautiful, living, dynamic system that evolves alongside humanity's aspirations to re-discover our forgotten Oneness. As a valuable tool for personal growth, pathworkings are presented as a freeform, archetypal, and deeply subjective experience based on the Tree of Life's path symbology, and not as the common, predefined, guided visualizations. The incredible and often neglected faculty of the human Imagination is greatly emphasized. The aspects and symbology of the Tree of Life are very well presented. With this book and Greer's equally excellent Circles of Power, the student of The Western Mysteries will find a lifetime of treasures and inspired direction for their sacred journey.

5 out of 5 stars INCREDIBLE WORK OF ART!.......2006-03-30

What an unbelievable gem. I wish to the gods this wasn't $8 million used. I can say without reservation that it is one of the best Cabala/Kabbalah/Qabalah book EVER WRITTEN. Why it's no longer printed, the world will never know. JMGreer is planning on expanding it and printing it with another publisher, luckily.

If you ever come across a cheaper copy--or have the extra dough to spend--I recommend this book immensely, for accurate and clearly explained Kabbalah study AND magickal practice. I can't recommend it highly enough. Because most people can't afford this, I second this recommendation with "The Magic of Qabalah" by Kala Trobe and "The Mystical Qabalah" by Dion Fortune. You won't be disappointed with either. Beginner or advanced, all of these both invaluable, accurate and wise.

5 out of 5 stars another superior book from greer.......2003-08-09

this book is very easy to read and understand. it brings many of the complex concepts of the qabala, (as understood in the golden dawn) to a level most students can understand. it's like a more interesting version of the golden dawn papers. i'd also recommend Dion Fortune's mystical qabala.

5 out of 5 stars Priceless Guide to The Cabalah--Like having a Teacher !.......2003-03-17

For nearly ten years, I have flirted with the idea of studying Cabalah (Kabalah, Qabalah--however you want to spell it) and I have been a member of several Mystery Schools and Masonic organizations that espouse the need to study Cabalah.... However, until I found this book, I just was not sure where to begin (this decision was difficult, pre-Internet) !

Previous to reading this book, I knew of Gematria, Notariquon, Temura and the basic layout of the Tree of Life --and I even tackled Crowley's "777," but I just was not sure what to start memorizing, or which school had it right....

This book cleared-up so many of the confusing aspects of The Cabalah and the Tree of Life--with clear, concise descriptions of the various aspects of the study (with helpful illustrations). This book is the equivalent of having a Teacher, who takes the time to explain The Cabalah, in detail --without all the usual egotistical, rambling, extraneous material found in many books on the subject (e.g., Crowley's dissertations on the subject).

John Michael Greer takes you by the hand and says, "Let's start with the beginning...." --whereas Crowley just throws you into the Deep End and says, "Sink or Swim."

Personally, I like Greer's method of Teaching Cabalah! Reading this book makes studying Cabalah interesting, fun and EASY (and you do not need to wade through numerous pages of extraneous ramblings to find the teachings--they are all laid-out and diagramed, concisely....unlike most pretentious works on the subject).

I also highly recommend purchasing the following book in conjunction with (or because you cannot find/afford this one, due to the sad fact that it is ludicrously "out of print") :
"The Chicken Qabalah of Rabbi Lamed Ben Clifford: Dilettante's Guide to What You Do and Do Not Know to Become a Qabalist" by Lon Milo Duquette (ISBN # 1578632153). This book receives rave reviews from Kabalists.

These two books, together, are perfect for the Beginner. Both of these men have a wonderful way of setting Personal Ego aside, and explaining Cabalah as a Friend and Teacher, instead of a Mystical "Know it All."

Anyone who has ever been Intimidated by the study of The Cabalah, or by various well-known Cabalist's works, should acquire this book (if possible) and Duquette's book, as well.

Also, obviously, you will need the famous "777" and other well-known Cabalistic Reference works (Sepher Yetzirah, etc.)....but, for the Beginner, "Paths of Wisdom" is the perfect starting point on the Journey up The Tree of Life.

Book Description

2004 COVR AWARD 2ND RUNNER-UP!

The Golden Dawn is one of the most influential and respected systems of magic in the world. Over a century old, the teachings of this once-secret society are considered the capstone of the Western Esoteric Tradition. Yet many of the available books on the subject are too complex or overwhelming for readers just beginning to explore alternative spiritual paths.

The Essential Golden Dawn is for those who simply want to find out what the Golden Dawn is and what it has to offer. Written by recognized experts on the topic, this introduction to High Magic is both straightforward and succinct. It explores the origins of Hermeticism and the Western Esoteric Tradition, as well as the rich history of the Golden Dawn and its founders. This guide explains the "laws" of magic and magical philosophy, describes different areas of magical knowledge that a Golden Dawn magician can expect to learn, and presents basic rituals for the novice.

If you have been curious about the Golden Dawn, but intimidated by its scope, this concise guide will shed light on this powerful system of practical magic and spiritual growth.

5 out of 5 stars Essential reading.......2006-11-15

A brilliant introduction to the Golden Dawn for this reader. Very well wriiten and full of what I would say is some very valuable information for those, like me, who are looking into high magic and preparing for a more disciplined education in spirituality. Many, if not all, of the concepts I have either long believed or felt on an intuitive level. I've just ordered the book by Israel Regardie and the self initiation book by the Cicero's after reading the "Essential Golden Dawn".

4 out of 5 stars Golden Dawn - Updated for our times.......2006-03-09

The Golden Dawn by Israel Regardie updated by the Ciceros is a very complete edition. It is a hard read, only because of the detail and sheer volume of information. But it is very illuminating.

4 out of 5 stars A Fine Introduction.......2005-08-25

When I began to explore the subject of magick, this was the third book I read. I wished it had been my first. Donald Michael Kraig's "Modern Magick" has a down to earth practicality that is designed to safely make you a practicing mage. John Michael Greer's "Circles of Power" has a cool, analytical approach that provides the best theoretical understanding of the subject I've yet to encounter.

Even though these are two terrific books, the Ciceros' book provides broader coverage of the subject. I especially appreciated their relatively extensive section on ancient antecedents to Hermeticism. The section with "The Years Before the Golden Dawn" (GD) as well as a brief history of the GD were also much appreciated. This historical background made this book special to me, and I suppose if asked I'd recommend reading these books in the opposite order than I did.

While I do not have the time, space or inclination to practice magick, the subject is important to me because of my deep interest in tarot, and therefore Qabalah. Since the decks we use in the English speaking world grow out of the GD, their system of magick will always be interesting.

While contemplating the GD tarot's version of trump VI, The Lovers, it made me think of a picture in the "Essential Golden Dawn" -- The Garden of Eden after the Fall. Wondering if the awakened Qliphoth of this picture had any bearing on the monster menacing Andromeda in the Lovers card, I decided to reread this book. I was also hoping to gain additional knowledge of the GD tarot. I was disappointed.

While the coverage of subject matter in this book is very broad, it is also very shallow. This is not a bad thing. It is an introduction. Its job is to get you started, not teach all the finer points. So if you are a newcomer to esoteric lore, be sure and read this book. If you have some background and are wanting to learn more, search out a book on the relevant subject with enough depth to satisfy your appetite.

3 out of 5 stars Does what it says, but isn't inspired or inspiring.......2005-01-17

Having just finished this book I found it to be a very introductory thesis on the Golden Dawn. It left me wanting.

The background on Hermeticism, the first part of the book, is the best part. It's a consise overview of the Western Mystical Tradition.

The history of the GD was brief and painless but not new or enlightening.

The overview of the work of the GD covers only the introductory grades and is brief. If you're at all familiar with the subject, you'll find it to be a dull retelling of what so many other authors have already revealed.

All told the book does what it set out to do - give a boiled down explanation of this influential group. But it looks at it from so many angles, so briefly, that it can only offer the most superficial treatment of each part. This translates into a very superficial appreciation for the GD.

Readers with any familiarity with the subject will be dissapointed. Readers without any foreknowledge may wonder what's the point.

5 out of 5 stars Informative and Powerful........2004-07-06

As a Witch for 6 years and a Pagan Priest of British Witchcraft, I recommend this book highly to anyone who is seeking to honestly learn about the Golden Dawn magical system. In all honesty, I have not known too much about the GD aside from basic ritualism, and this book sheds much historical and well-researched information on the path. I respect the authors, especially Sandra (incredible energy and radiant aura), as I had the honour to meet them both at Orlando's INATS (International New Age Trade Show)--I was proud to be the first in line for their book signing. They are great and knowledgeful and I recommend this book highly. Salutations,

Book Description

She sang her telegram to a Hollywood star -- now he entertains from afar.

Foe to friend, help in our quest to rid this mansion of an unwanted guest.

The Charmed Ones travel to Hollywood to attend a big bash hosted by Kevin Peterson, Paige's old flame. Kevin is holding the party at his recently purchased mansion, which he was able to afford because of rumors that it's haunted! Sure enough, ghostly goings-on begin almost immediately, but everyone believes that Kevin is the one behind the "haunting." He confides in Paige that he is not.

The ghost reveals himself to be Robert Maxwell, a star of stage and screen who vanished under mysterious circumstances in 1926 -- right after receiving a singing telegram. A friendly ghost, Maxwell just likes having an audience. But when people start to disappear and the house seals shut, the Charmed Ones realize something evil must also be lurking. It is only with the able assistance of their ghostly ally that they and the rest of the partygoers stand a chance.

4 out of 5 stars Hollywood Illusions.......2007-06-18

After vanquishing an illusion demon, the three Charmed ones find themselves invited to Hollywood by one of Paige's friends. He has just sold a screenplay and used the money to buy an old mansion. The mansion is affordable as it appears to be haunted. No one has stayed more than three days previously. Paige's friend has prepared a huge party for his friends and it is not long before the ghost shows itself. The ghost was an actor at the top of his game until he disappeared in the twenties. From first appearances he seems to be quite friendly and just looking for an audience to entertain. But is that all that is going on?

While the house may be haunted by a friendly ghost, there are also other powers at play. Mortals, witches, demons and even the house itself have some part to play in what is going on. Eventually danger rears its ugly head and it is up to the Charmed Ones to use their powers to put things right and protect the innocents. But can even they prevail against the forces rallied against them? As this is a book based on the series the main characters will survive but that doesn't guarantee anything about the new characters. You will have to read it to find out.

Coming shortly after the author's LIGHT OF THE WORLD this book does not suffer from any apparent rush in production. For the most part the story is tight and well done. There is one character how shows up at one point without an explanation of how they got there but it is not impossible. All in all I found this to be one of the better Charmed books. If you like the series you should enjoy this book. Check it out.
